I'm not usually quick to criticize but, tonight was it... It was my grandson's Birthday. I went into Safeway to pick up a cake. There wasn't any employee insight. I called out "hello". I did get the attention of a lady. She came out to the counter. I asked her if she could please write Happy Birthday and my grandsons name on the cake please. She said "No", I said "excuse me", she said "no", "I'm not a baker or designer". I said, "I am asking you to pls. Write this on the cake, you do work in this department". She replied, "It's too small". By this time I'm furious .. I said "get a piece of plastic and writ it, then put it on the cake"... She finally did.. Looked like crap. She was so very rude.. My daughter went in last week for my granddaughters cake and the exact thing happened to her! A new employee is defiantly needed! read more

The new layout of the store was confusing at first, but after awhile it got easier to find everything. The new layout has the aisles extremely narrow and nearly impossible to navigate carts through. The staff is knowledgable for the most part, but some are still rude. The prices are decent, same as always. I would not go out of my way to shop there. The only reason I had been was because of the convenient location across the street from my previous address. Will not shop there again if I can avoid it. read more

Left after standing there for literally 15mins without any service.... Went in here earlier today to grab a sandwich before work cause safeway deli sandwiches are ALWAYS good. BUT never ever will I go here for a sandwich. 2 ladies workin behind the counter as I stand there for about a couple minutes without either of them making eye contact with me I then proceed to say "excuse me?" And one of the ladies says "oh I'll be with you as soon as I can" and then proceeds to come out with a cart for food and then starts taking the sand which topping pans out of the bar! Right in front of me!!! She didn't say a word so after I stand there for ANOTHER 5 minutes while the other lady is helping PLENTY of other people with the fried food and I'm still standing there waiting for service!!! This review is not about retail in this store, but regarding Home Delivery from this store. After purchasing online, and paying in advance, for a delivery a couple of days away, I am constantly being told they are out of stock. But, they must of had the products at the time of order, or why put them up for sale on the web page? Retail customers come into the store before the delivery orders are pulled, and take the available products, so delivery orders are cut. This should not happen, I have ordered and paid before those customers ever showed up. I should be first! BS! Order $100+, actually get $25 in merchandise. But you pay the same delivery charge. Plus, once you place your online order, there are no changes allowed. Not going to do it anymore. read more

The more often I shop at this store, the more I dislike it. There are rarely courtesy clerks available to bag groceries. My husband goes so far as to bag groceries himself - something the checkers rarely thank him for! This company seems to be going more and more toward house brands instead of name brands, and many are inferior. Safeway also seems to continually discontinue brands that I rely on. I've written comment cards over and over again to the corporate office about service and about the selection in the store. I usually get a phone call from the district office with a promise that they'll let the store manager know, but there is little or no change in the store's operation. I can't wait for Ralph's to open in Petaluma so I can shop there instead! read more

This has to be the best grocery store in Petaluma. Don't waste your time at Lucky's or at fancy schmancy Raley's with surround sound. I am usually ignored at both places. I guess my 4'11 frame and brown skin is super intimidating. The customer service at SW is always superb. I agree with the previous reviewer. The clerks there are in slow motion! Sometimes they engage people in lengthy conversations that further clog up getting out of there. They rarely enforce the "Express Line" rules. And if there are more than three people on line they are supposed to open another line but they do not. Every week the prices go up which drives me nuts! Why is it that prices have to raise the every week! The only good thing is that sometimes the produce clerks offer you samples of the fruit which may I add is more than 50% GMO! UGH! Went to the new Safeway in Petaluma. Much bigger than the old one. Was very busy (opening weekend) and my grocery list was short so I didn't hit all the departments so here goes: A cheese counter with a cheese expert (fromager?) to make suggestions Larger Health and Beauty aisle Always helpful Meat department Roomier. Not running into poles and mid-aisle displays Many more employees and really fast checking out time All in all positive experience. A fellow Yelper mentioned "the cashiers like to chat way too much" I've shopped there for 7 years now and engage in conversation while being rung up I can't think of a single time when it was excessive or slowed me down. Wouldn't like standing at the counter while some robot scanned my items. read more

We like to shop a number of different grochery stores in Petaluma. Several of them have better prices on individual items. But Safeway has the best selection and reasonable prices overall. So we find ourselves coming back at least once or twice a month. And overall it's a nice clean store with helpful staff. read more

Their food choices are varied and most are above average. Their Chicken Strips are the best in town! Real Chicken breast meat breaded and fried to perfection. Always ask for fresh though, you don't want what sits under the lights for any time. They should be crunchy on the outside. Always moist and tender on the inside. Better than Raley's Chicken Strips!!! Even though the store is open 24/7, the deli area closes at 7pm. read more

Came in looking for a German chocolate cake and they didn't have one. I was struggling to look for a good substitute for my dad's birthday cake. The (lead?) baker, Maggie, came out and said she would make one. I cannot express my gratitude enough to this woman. This is my dad's favorite cake and the first time in years I've celebrated his birthday. I want to personally give her 50/5 stars. She went way above and beyond service. Until Today, I've found Safeway staff to be very accommodating. They used to go out of their way to offer to clean and crack crab, or advise as to how to handle or cook a food, as you were buying it, even before you asked. Unfortunately, Today the guy at the crab counter did not measure up to Safeway's usual standards, at all. It was about 6p, when I took our crab back, that I'd bought in the morning, because they'd forgotten to offer, so I'd forgotten to have the crab cleaned and cracked. When I went back, the guy said that he might not be allowed to do it, because the crab had already left the store. I explained that Safeway had always accommodated us before, in other situations and he said that well he didn't know if he could do it. I asked him if he could ask someone. He looked around helplessly and said that he'd have to ask his manager. No offer or move to actually DO that. I had to ask him to do it. He pretended to not understand and sort of moved off, and I thought that he was going to call. He came back a minute later and said that I might want to go to Customer Service to have them call his manager. I said that that would mean that I'd have to walk away from the refrigerator section, with my perishable crabs. He finally called the manager, who came and told him to crack my crabs, and then he was happy to do it, and I smiled and said that I was really glad that it had worked out, because I really liked Safeway and really wanted to be able to continue to shop there, and he smiled like nothing untoward had ever happened, and we were just the best buddies in the world. read more

This place has by far the best sushi in the North Bay. Yes I said sushi! I have tried them all and they are mostly disappointing. I give the sushi a 4 out of 5. I have also tried many of there bakery items and they are very good as well. Love this store! read more

I wish I could rate this location higher. I am happy with the layout and the assortment offered. I note many items are in several places...and usually in logical additional locations. The deli looks great, love the cheese area, the produce area is not the best around but not bad either. Service at the deli counter was above average and friendly. Service at the check-stand today was lackluster, the gentleman working was disinterested and not warm. At the end of the transaction he commented to note a survey at the bottom of the receipt but nothing else, no "thank you"- no "have a nice day". Maybe next visit will be better. 1st off might wanna update your hours of operation into the correct hours! Your night staff is extremely rude don't know if they're just under paid an overworked or what. Tonight I walked into Safeway got milk cereal and a 2 L of soda pretty sure that's not going to be more than $10 but for some reason the gentleman behind the register ring me up twice I didn't buy two things of milk. I called and the guy had the decency to say to come back and he was rude to top it off. It's 1230 at night I just want to go home and go to sleep so I can get up early for work. This experience leaves me speechless. To top it off there was a woman behind me and she asked the cashier if he knew where children's medicine was. He Clearly didn't know but was rude to her about it and honestly I don't not get why. I am a store manager myself I would never treat a customer like that. If you don't know where something is at least you can try to get someone that can help someone find it. Obviously it's for a child that is sick! What happens if that was your child would you care that someone was rude to you about just finding the medicine to get your child feeling better!! After this experience tomorrow I'm going in and demanding a refund on one of those milks because obviously I did not purchase two. If I wanted to milk don't you think I would've purchased a whole gallon not to half gallons? Maybe it was an honest mistake but the guy who rang me up didn't even give me my receipt I had to ask the gentleman behind me if he can grab it from the register. The gentleman ignored me when I asked for it he was too busy ringing up the guy behind me. Then he walked away went to the line for whatever reason, I don't understand why he didn't finish with me with my transaction handed me the receipt and I would've looked at it before walking away but that was not the case. This whole experience was truly a disaster just to go to Safeway and get three things you are losing your customers each day with your poor customer service and your shitty attitudes. Also the other night I went there and I was about to walk up to a self check out machine waiting for the guy to get finished then this woman walked straight behind him looked at me and said check out closed even though I was standing there for quite some time. This rating is only based on the lady that works in the sandwich/breakfast burrito section. She is super rude and slow. 15 min to make 2 sandwiches?? They weren't even toasted and it was just a regular turkey sandwich. She makes the rest of the store look bad. When I see her working behind the counter, I turn around and go to Raleys for breakfast instead. Decent selection in most departments but horrible customer service. Safeway as a whole has gone down hill in the last decade - rising prices and decreasing service to match those price hikes. Since the new Petaluma location opened, I've been very unhappy going to this Safeway. In fact, since they've opened, I've found that I've moved probably 90-95% of my business to other options (i.e. Lucky's, Whole Foods or going out to dinner etc). I've been a lifer with Safeway and in the past 6 months or whatever the time has been since they've opened the new location, I've been pretty much going elsewhere. Cashiers and other floor employees: They seem to be nice and attempting to be helpful but the new layout is taking it's toll. The employees that I've talked to at the new location (about 6 or so) at the new location don't understand why the store was designed the way it was. They seem to be a bit confused with the designers ideas too. New location: Is fine New layout and how well it's organized: It's all Effed up. Someone was smoking a glass pipe when they designed the store. The first two times I visited the new location, I spent way to much time (40 minutes plus) looking for things that I used to be able to get in under 15min. I gave it a third attempt today and left before finishing my shopping list. I even requested a store layout of some sort and they gave me brochure with general items and where they're located. It didn't include "soap". Thought that was odd. Well, I got 5 of my 20 plus items and split. I'll just go to another store later today. The plus items since the new location opened: I've found that Whole Foods and Petaluma Market have better meat and produce. Lucky's has just about everything else I need at a reasonable price. Trader Joe's has some black chips that last a long time after the bag is opened and some really tasty salsa's. Thank you Safeway for allowing me to expand my horizons since you opened the new location. :) read more

I just came home from shopping at this store. While there I witnessed two people, a woman and her teenage son, with no masks on being served at the hot food counter amongst about six or seven other people packed together. The store did nothing about it. After asking the woman and her son to put masks on I was verbally abused by her and the boy all the way to the parking lot. I have tried four times to reach the Safeway store manager by telephone and all I get is being put on hold endlessly. I have a photo which I am now prepared to publish on social media and send to the local newspapers showing this woman and her son being served by your employees with absolutely no regard to the other customers or employees in the store. I will never go back to this Safeway and I recommend others do not shop there as long as they do not enforce their policy of having to wear a mask upon entering the store. In my opinion if people come in without masks they should not be served or checked out. read more

Bakery: I think the baker has changed from a few months ago. The apple fritters are much smaller (by about 1/3) and a little bland now. Seafood: The poke selection has been reduced- they used to offer three or four different choices. Now I consistently see only two. Deli: Am I crazy to think all the deli meats and cheeses have gone up by a dollar or three per pound? Dairy: why not a few more sugar free non- dairy creamers since those are the ones that are usually sold out? Pharmacy: 1/2 hour wait on the phone, 25 minute wait in-person AND they still gave me the wrong drug for my mother. Luckily I know how to spell even though the pharmacist doesn't ( I checked w the doc and had them confirm what they ordered from the pharmacy before I explained what happened at the pharmacy). Hello, I hesitated writing this, but felt it needed to be said... I was at Safeway the other day, and was so shocked to hear the manager speak to one of the delivery person's that has product in the store. I totally felt sorry for the girl he was yelling at! I wanted to go to him and say excuse me... shouldn't you take this else where away from the public? I felt he was so unprofessional. I feel he should be repamended for his actions. I The poor girl was saying she would have the table broke down and she would deal with it. And he yelled back and said very loudly YEAH! RIGHT NOW! GET IT OUT OF HERE NOW!!!!!!! Should this be the way people should treat others? I THINK NOT!!!! I would hope that this doesn't happen again! I shop safeway weekly and always felt that this was a good place and that employees treat each other as family! I know different now! read more

You know that saying, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it?" Well, that's how I feel about the "new" Safeway. It seems they expanded the size of the store by moving into the new location and they added some nice elements, but they also discontinued many items. They have eliminated the variety of many products and even many of their long time employees don't seem to know where items are located (or why they would put some items where they do). I love the old employees and go to this store now ONLY to see them. But to do my actual shopping and get all that I need in one stop, I go either Lucky's, Raley's or Trader Joe's. It's too bad that a store with such local recognition is destroyed by it's relocation and deletion of choices. The new computerized sales also stinks. While I do have a computer and can add the sale items to my card, it really is cutting out a large portion of elderly customers that don't have access to a computer internet or smart phone. Also, the self check-out's waste more time than standing in line, since there always seems to be a problem. read more

I shop at this store at least twice a week for a family of six. They never seam to have enough checker or baggers. I know that the prices we pay are set with the cost of employes. So why do I have to bag my own groceries? I was there last night at 7:00P.M. And they only had two checkout lines open with very long lines in both. At the same time they had 3 employees cleaning up one box of spilled spaghetti noodles. The employes that work there are very nice and helpful. But the mangers need to do a much better job of scheduling them. read more

My daughters first birthday was coming up and I needed to order a cake. I had ordered it from Raileys cause the last fruit basket cake we got from safeway wasn't the best. My friend told me if you order a cake from safeway they will include a "smash cake" for the baby for free. So i called safeway to check if they had the same Minnie Mouse cake i had ordered at Raileys, i was informed by a male that they did. So i cancelled my order at Raileys and ordered it at safeway. I was told they had that cake and everything was perfect. A week later, day of my daughters party, TWO HOURS BEFORE it was time to pick it up, i get a call from a man in the bakery department. He tells me they actually don't carry the Minnie Mouse cake..... I told him its pictured on their website and when i called A WEEK AGO to order it i was told they had it. He didn't have much to say except sorry we don't carry it. I was SO angry! He puts some other lady on the phone who basically repeats the same thing, which i didnt care to hear. How unprofessional to call someone day of their parry, just 2 hours before the cake was supposed to be ready and say oh sorry we dont carry that cake!! So the lady then tells me, we have a mikey and minnie mouse cake, luau theme. I don't want that... if i wanted that i would have ordered that to begin with! I told her how Raileys has what they need to make the cake that i ordered, and asked if they could maybe get it from them.. She tells me oh i can make you a cake and then you can go buy the kit from Raileys and decorate it. WTF?????!!!! I ORDERED THE CAKE FROM YOU, WHY WOULD I DECORATE THE CAKE???!!! She knew i was angry, and said she would call back. Waited, waited.... waited. No call. I called Raileys and told them the problem and what was going on, and they were beyond helpful. She told me she could make the cake no problem, AND would include a smash cake even though Raileys doesn't do those anymore. She saved my day! Never again will i order a cake from safeway! read more

A typical safeway store that can get really iffy at night time in the parking lot and bathroom/cafe area. This safeway is open 24 hours a day, and because of that, they tend to have a lot of homeless people pan handling at the entrance/exit. They also tend to hang around the seating area near the bathroom where people can go and buy the hot foods and sandwiches. The parking lot acts as a hang out for questionable people in questionable cars at night time mostly. The prices are average, nothing special. I usually come here if I have forgotten an ingredient, or if I didn't have time to pick up dinner and it is past 11 p.m when the other grocery stores I frequent are closed. So, the positive things include the bakery section. Good prices on slices of cakes and goodies. I cannot eat dairy, and for some reason I can eat a fair amount of the slices of cakes offered, which are always delicious and never give me a stomach ache. So if you have a late night craving for some yummy cakes or pastries, this is a good place to get it from. The place is always clean and well stocked. The employees for the most part are polite. There truly isn't much else to say about this place. I would try avoiding the place at night time after 10 p.m, or you may run into some unsavory people inside or outside. read more

Went to Safeway today to pick out some lunch boxes for upcoming school year. Made what I thought was a good selection. Kids were jacked, Took over to the counter and did my normal check out. Price came up wrong, I asked our checker for a price check. Bagger goes over to the isle to retrieve tag, comes back with the same tag I looked at when making my selection. Manager walks over and says oh we marked them wrong he grabbed the tag from over here, clearly, this was my fault I guess, I asked the bagger where did you get the tag he said uh um over here. I said you are kidding me. The manager said I can roll it back on the security tape. I said that's bullshit you should stand behind your mistake. Which they had no intentions of doing, this isn't the first time items I have purchased have been inaccurately rung up. I have shopped at Safeway since the first day I can remember. Bennet Valley 1978. This is by far the worst Safeway I have dealt with. Management has no idea about customer service, the deli takes 30 minutes to make a sandwich, food quality is sub par from the entire deli section and the staff spend more time talking in the back than working. Goodluck getting anything on a weekend after 5. I can understand if today was an off day but in the two months of going to this Safeway, I will be looking for a new shopping destination for my family.
