Great store even with the homeless living out front. The Pharmacy sucks: long lines, abrasive pharmacist, and slow cashiers!

There is an unsafe obstruction at all exits of the store that would create a crush or large traffic jam in the event of an emergency. This should be prohibited by law, but the law is clearly insufficient. Obstruction the free flow of movement in a building of this size and capacity is not only dangerous, but disrespectful as well. read more

This Safeway is quite large. I've never seen the parking lot more than halfway full, so that's something to be grateful for. But I think they're not able to adequate staff and stock the store - lots of shelves partly empty and products going bad. I also think they've had some crime issues, as there is a significant security staff in place and they have a special section where you have to buy alcohol, medicine, and detergent at a dedicated cashier. They've got ~8 self-checkouts and a couple of cashiers working at any given time. There is a Starbucks inside the store. For the most part, the store is clean, well lit, and not crowded. I am finding that prices at Safeway are about 150% more than Winco these days. I'm grateful for all grocery options in this neighborhood. But I'll probably only go to this store when I am short on time as it's closer and quicker or I may shop their sales via the app and do a pickup. read more

The old decrepit looking lady Michelle that works as a cashier gave me some of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I've been through Michelle's line plenty of times and every time she's rude. But today, Michelle showed her ssa she was verrry rude, dismissive, and completely unprofessional. She talked back when I asked her to correct an overcharge, she rolled her eyes, and acted like helping me was an inconvenience. What really bothered me most was how she treated people differently she was friendly and polite to white customers, but cold and short with anyone else. That kind of behavior says a lot about her character and shouldn't be ignored. If this is the kind of attitude your store allows, it's disappointing and unacceptable. read more

Twice I have used the order / pick I up Service. Each time, I am informed my order will Be late within a five hour corridor. When contacting the department I am told they are short staffed and no exception! I Care for my wife who is on hospice care at home. I expect when I leave the order it will be ready. Today, I called the pickup and told The order was somewhere in the que. No effort to prioritize my order when I explained my situation."we are short of staff!!" angrily , I cancelled the order. I called later to request a call from a supervisor. She was sympathetic but offered no solution other than to state the obvious.. They should have prioritized the order. A word to the wise re: Bottledrop green bags: While at Safeway the other evening, I cashed out (2) credit slips at their Bottledrop kiosk which came to $96 each (they give you a 20% bonus if you use that store) and I went to buy a bunch of gift cards. I then get told that they no longer allow you to buy gifts cards and you have to use the credit slips that day - or they are invalid - even though the slips say they have NO EXPIRATION DATE. I was livid! I use them for gift cards for Toys 4 Tots and there is nothing else at Safeway that I could buy for children. The only thing even close is Halloween candy or decorations. The manager said my only option was to go to the Bottledrop store and have a manager there put the credit slip money back onto my account and then withdraw cash (minus the bonus 20%). She said that they changed their policies a few day prior - yet they had no warning on the Bottledrop kiosk. My advice is to not to use the 20% bonus credit unless you are going to use them day of - and know that they may not let you buy gift cards, wine/beer, prescriptions, sale items or a plethora of other items now (at Safeway). From now on, I am just going to pull out the cash and not do the bonus 20% because at Safeway, that credit slip comes with a lot of strings attached. read more

This Safeway is barely hanging on and can't thank the workers enough for keeping it open. The neighborhood is rough and there are security personnel, which helps shopping. It seems like a smaller Safeway, but has a pharmacy, bakery, deli and a Starbucks too! read more

I'm really perplexed to have my issue with Safeway. I bought Organics mushrooms to find out when getting home they we're moldy in the middle of the bunch. At about the cost $3.50 I wasn't trying to rush right back as it's not economical and wasteful of time and gas. I was going to wait until my next visit which is about weekly. Anyhow the mold just started taking over and getting nasty. I took a picture and tossed them. Now, it's a few days after Christmas and the following week and I go to the store and fill my cart. I stop at customer service desk and explain my situation. Adrianna says she can't credit my bill because I don't have the receipt. I have my Safeway card and or app I use for shopping. I have the same debit card used to buy the moldy mushrooms. I guess her decision to not provide me customer service at the customer service desk is backed by Safeway. Your telling me in 2020 and the digital age that my proof of purchase can only be verified on a small piece of paper that easily gets lost or tossed? What a scam! I left the desk, checked myself out and will find another grocery store to shop at. read more

Came in 20 mins before closing and my friend tried to buy 1 singular can of alcohol along with other groceries and they demanded to see the ID of all 3 of us. For ONE can. I'm almost 25 and never have I been asked this in Oregon. The other person with us is a minor so she was denied the purchase, and then they refused to give us the bathroom code. The cashiers are very nice. The only advice I have if you shop here is to check the expiration dates. I have found many things expired. The latest was today, some oat milk cold brew that expired in October and some deli meat/cheese packs that expired in December. read more

Very pricey overall. Unfortunately in this neighborhood it really is the only local grocery store unless you have consistent transportation and can get Winco about a mile away. I definitely appreciate that they are in this neighborhood, their hours are reasonable and they are cheaper than stopping at 711 for one or two items that you need. The bathrooms are code locked because of the homeless community in this area but the code is 12345, they may or may not have a sign posted about this now but it's been that way for years. The restrooms are for emergencies only I would say, it is extremely poorly maintained and always looks like it's in need of a remodel. read more

Conversation I just overheard between an employee and supervisor at the Safeway on 122nd and Powell: "If someone has had a persistent cough for days and isn't feeling well, should they come in to work?" "They should only stay home if they have a fever. We cannot force them, but they should come to work." This shows me they aren't taking this thing seriously as individuals and due to policies like this, many people are in danger. read more

I have been going to This Safeway since for about 35 years. Never have I been treated so nastily by the manager and some employees. Today June 24th was the mandate to wear masks in Oregon. You know what Safeway has for their sign Be a Hero wear a mask. What a joke. I was told by the manager there is nothing they can do as they don't want to get punched in the face. He was so condescending to me as were some of the employees I will never shop there again. I would suggest shopping at QFC . . . At least they have signs that say Masks Required. No one is asking Safeway to enforce the mandate just have clear and precise signs. read more

This store does not care about the health and safety of their customers and workers. I've visited this store twice during COVID. Lots of customers leave their noses hanging out of their masks. On both visits, I saw a person without a mask, and staff didn't do anything about them. I asked someone about it, and they told me this store offers you a mask at the door, but otherwise does not enforce the mask mandate. This is egregious and unacceptable. Thank you to the guy in produce dept for yelling at a pregnant woman because she removed the pointed ends of the corn so it wont rip the thin plastic bags. You could have just asked her to take the ends with her if you were worried about the mess. Kudos to your customer service! read more

Never enough cashiers, the aisles are organized by some arcane system that I can't even begin to understand, and the whole place is just kind of bleah. Still, they have groceries, and if you need groceries, this is a place where you can get them. Unless you need fresh meat or seafood. There MIGHT be someone at the meat counter, but last night I stood there for a good 10 minutes before someone wandered over there to kind of morosely take my order. I was literally calling the store to say "Hello? I'm here by the meat counter. Please sell me meat" when he finally showed up. Do better. read more

Who would have thought to do a review on Safeway but I guess I'm pretty new to yelp :) They get five stars because the service at the deli is amazing! I was desperate to get a pizza for a small party and asked the Deli if they would be so kind to bake it for me. The person at the counter said she would be happy to but had to check with the manager. 15 minutes later, a Safeway Selected Supreme Pizza baked to perfection! There was a hole where you can see the pizza peeking through so the deli staff topped off the box for us to keep warm! By the way, the pizza itself was also nothing short of amazing. Luckily I live close and now I know the secrets to getting a cheap, great pizza in town! No other grocery has gone the extra mile like this Safeway has - thumbs up to you! read more

They don't enforce masks. It's not about the regular employees it's about the company they will change if there is enough pressure to do so. Imagine giving so little care about their customers they the small minority of non mask wearing get their way. If you call them and ask they will get political about it and ignore the fact they could deny service. The representative literally said we can't force people when they knew what I was asking which was are you denying service. Go on call them and try it. Tank the rating if you don't wanna get sick shopping and maybe they will listen. read more

Basically the only reason I was at this store was the pleasure of returning cans and bottles! However the machines (of which there was only 3 and in such a busy location, I would think they would request more) if they took the cans and bottles, mostly kept jamming. So what should've only taken a short amount of time for 3 bags, took almost 2 hours. We didn't even get through all the bags! The only positive things I have to say about the whole experience was the poor guy who had to keep coming out to unjam the machines. But I also want to mention the girl at customer service gave me the greatest tip on where I could take my returns to in the future. So I just want to give her a great big THANK YOU!!! read more

I came racing in to find some flowers and wine for a "hostess" type gift. I'm not familiar with the layout in this grocery store. I found the flowers but then I went stomping down the center aisle in search of the wine. A tall female employee called out to me..."Can I help you find something?" How refreshing! She could see on my face that I was on a search and she intervened to help me. I can't say what this store is like as a rule...but she made it so I got where I was going on time...and that is just pretty cool. read more

This review is ONLY for the deli/hot food. The Chinese food is hit or miss, when it's on, it is ON, when it's not, um yeah, I've thrown 20 dollars of food in the garbage before. Overall I would normally give the deli 4 stars(the hit or miss Chinese food would keep it from 5), however, there is just this one IDIOT woman who works there. How she still has a job I have no friggin clue. She can't dish up the food to save her life, she can't get an order right to save her life, and she doesn't know how to make a sandwich. She's also braindead when you try to speak to her. I apologize I cannot remember her name, but she's taller, dark hair. If you want a GREAT sandwich, there is an older lady with light colored hair, slightly heavyset, and short. May or may not be cranky, but she always does her job and does it well. Not to mention she can make a sandwich better than anyone else in this place. She makes the perfect sandwich every time, always gets the proportions right, and gives you EXACTLY what you ask for every time. She cuts them right too. I can't remember her name either. This Safeway at Southeast Powell Boulevard and 122nd is the ONLY Safeway store around this Neighborhood now. Most of the Clerks are friendly. I have Shopped here for Over Six Years. My Darling Husband, of Over 12 + Years, and myself usually Drive now, though. And yes, just like All of the Other Safeway Stores ... there is a Summer Beer Sale every Summer. You Could check the Weekly Advertisement that Safeway and Albertson's stores send out to find Out just WHEN the Summer Beer Sale starts. Also, the Quality of Produce at Safeway is on Par with some of your more Upscale Stores from a different Parent Company. If you need Ketchup, Mayonnaise, and Mustard in Squeeze Bottles in a Three Pack Combo... this Safeway has that. While you are here... remember, there are ONLY so many Clerks working Each Shift. There is Always someone getting ready to go on Break, or Lunch,... and there are waaaaay too many Crabby People to begin with. Do NOT Open any Cartons or Boxes of food while inside Safeway stores. They DO prosecute Shoplifters. I heard that is why Certain People, usually Career Criminals... tend to Go to Safeway stores... you know, they think they are " Sticking it to the Man... " or something like that. Oh yes, remember to bring along your Redbox Movies for Return here at the Kiosk. Also, there are Bags of ICE usually in a Freezer, if you want some ICE just mention how many Bags you want to Purchase to the Cashier at Checkout before she or he is done Checking your Order. Mostly great staff at this store. I tried to use a digital coupon, but it wasn't working properly. The checker, Reba, got some assistance. The manager, Carmen, couldn't figure it out either. She tried a paper coupon, that didn't work. The manager finally got frustrated and blamed Reba. She went on to berate her right in front of me. There is no excuse for this type of behavior from the manager, especially when Reba didn't do anything wrong. As a matter of fact, Reba remained professional, calm, and pleasant throughout the ordeal. She was very nice to me. She should be the one who was always professional. The other staff at this store are all great. I am also impressed with the meat department. Those folks love what they do and are always very pleasant and helpful. read more

I loved living behind this store as a child! Miss the days when the produce guys would smash egg plant on the loading docks! It's been 35+ years and want to come visit where I used to put my small, 8 year old hand up the candy machines and spread apart the springs holding the candy to get a fist full of sweet goodness! Don't always feel safe shopping here. There a lot of "undesirables" that hang out in the parking lot (they park their RV off on the side street that dead ends off 122nd.) The parking lot itself is usually disgusting and smells like pee. It got a LITTLE better after they took out the bottle returns. The prices are high and they aren't always well stocked. When I go in at night I see people walking around with backpacks literally stealing with me standing right there! I've told employees but they say there's nothing they can do unless they see it themselves. (Makes me feel like a tool for actually paying hard earned money when they take that kind of attitude about shoplifting!) The ONLY reason I give it two stars is that there are some REALLY nice people who work the cash register. I don't currently have their names but I want them to get the recognition they deserve. I used to be a cashier and dealing with the kind of people who must come into this location a lot must not be easy. Produce is okay, bakery is hit or miss about having staples in stock, and I don't go to the deli enough to judge. The lines are usually long but the pharmacy isn't bad. Never enough cashiers, so lines are so long my food's expired by the time I checkout.

I live 2 blocks from this store and rarely go a week without stopping in. This store carries a wide variety of products and I can almost always find what I'm looking for. I love the freshly baked french bread and their jumbo chocolate muffins. Sure this store gets some shifty characters but what store doesn't? The cashiers are friendly and the staff is helpful. I do regret that this store remodeled their can and bottle redemption center. Everyday I see people with shopping carts, bike trailers, and garbage bags cruising my street looking for cans. They dig through our garbage area and make big messes. We never had that problem before they remodeled. The redemption center is now next to the front entrance so you have to smell sour beer and be approached by panhandlers as you enter. That's no fun. I don't think the bakery case is refilled during the day which is too bad because the bakery products are delicious but usually pretty picked over. Typically, the produce is excellent and I love the wide selection of organic & vegetarian/vegan products. read more

All in all it's your run of the mill safeway. But it's less trashy than the Albertsons down the street. Fewer tweakers, better produce and a larger over all selection of food. If you're in the area and are in need of consumer shopping. This place will suffice. read more

Encountered a rude worker who rolled her eyes and gave us attitude. Disappointed but not surprised

This place seems to get worse by the day. The parking lot is usually filthy with empty carts scattered about. Good luck trying to get warm food such as roasted chicken and turkey breasts at dinner time. The manager once told me that 9:00 am was the best time for that. I would think dinner time would be a good time to sell dinner. Until recently it was impossible to find a hand held shopping basket. Seems people keep stealing them and replacing them wasn't a priority for the store manager. All in all, I think this store lacks decent management. The employees seem to be doing the best they can, with what they've got but in the end, they seem as disgruntled as the shoppers. Maybe a surprise visit my a district manager might be helpful. If there was another shopping option nearer to my home, I would certainly quit shopping here. read more

It's spendy but what safeway store is not? They have a stupid Starbucks inside which takes up needed floor space at the front. Meat department is very costly. Bakery is pretty decent. The deli chicken is horrible but their Chinese is great. They never have enough clerks at the registers during weekday mornings and I'm not about to do my own check out as they offer no discount to do so. The best bang for your buck is Winco as I try not to spend more than 20 dollars at any given time at Safeway. read more

Unfortunately I recently moved close to this Safeway. I have been there 3 times. NEVER AGAIN. The last time I was there about 11am on a Saturday morning and they were totally out of cinnamon rolls. I mean not one package. They told me that they had just put some out to rise, and would be ready in the middle of the afternoon. How many people want cinnamon rolls in the afternoon. Then with the few things I did have, a woman barely got in front of me in the express lane (limit 12) with a full basket and was not told it was the express lane. They don't have self checkout so I had not choice but to wait 10 minutes in another lane until my back was so sore all I could think of was swearing at Safeway until way later in the day when I got the pain controlled. The first time I was there one of the employees made fun of me in front of other employees and customers because I asked if they had anymore of the $.99 pork they were advertising, saying how could anyone even ask for it because they had been out of it for days. read more
