This has to be one of the cleanest Safeways I've been to. There's a large deli selection,also a large selection of pre packed foods to go.. I'm surprised how much fresh baked bread that they carry. They must bake baguettes through out the day. Mine felt warm around 1130am. A fairly good selection of vegetables. Plus the store has at least 10 self checkout machines. People if you don't know how to scan and look up your items,go to the regular line. read more

Just wanted to say thank you to the kind worker in Guest Services (I believe her name was Mariela). I got home from a long day and stopping for groceries and realized I was missing a bag and I think it was mistakenly not put in my cart or got mixed up with the person's behind me. No big deal, until I realized it was our meat for dinner. I called the store and Mariela answered, was kind, and when I arrived the process of replacing the food took less than 5 minutes. She was very understanding and helpful - getting me out of there quickly and assisting me. Just wanted to shout her out - I'm sure these kind of mix ups are common but it's nice to see someone who provides good customer service. Wanted to give her that recognition because during a really hard week for me personally, having that minor issue handled gracefully made my day a lot easier. read more

The good: This Safeway has the highest ceiling I've ever seen in a Safeway. The parking lot is spacious and the interior of the store is spacious too. Their frozen pizza section is perpendicular to the rest of the freezer aisles and is further up front. It is visually very appealing and it did the trick on luring us in and buying a frozen pizza. I got some frozen macarons here that were pretty decent. When you enter, you're welcomed by the flower/balloon section. It is colorful, fragrant and pretty. Safeway has the best balloons compared to the other grocery store competitors. I also think their bakery is superior to most chains. For custom cakes, you only need to pre-order by one day. The bad: Starbucks is further in and toward the right rather than immediately next to the sliding door entrance. So, if you're looking for a quick coffee this may take a few steps further than another Safeway option. They didn't have a mini slice version of their black forest cake. The interesting: There's a glass door that separates the pharmacy from the makeup area. I am not sure if that is a security precaution to prevent folks from stealing in the pharmacy or the beauty area. read more

I have been in the Berryessa community for 17 years. The Safeway near Capitol is old and has very few nice clerks. Not welcoming at all. I only go when I'm short on something it's closer. Calaveras always clean and a welcoming staff. With the new Safeway I had higher expectations believing different clerks different management however I was wrong. People do not greet you nor ask if you need help unapproachable attitude. I rarely experience someone happy to be there. It's like you're bothering them for assistance. Whoever manages Calaveras location please train your other chain locations in Berryessa. I only go to new Berryessa location because it new and remains clean. Also having Starbucks soothes the tummy. Otherwise I'd drive out to Calaveras just to feel respected and valued as a loyal customer. Hope Management reads this and makes some changes soon. I'd love to support our local stores than drive to Milpitas. read more

This is a very nice and clean Safeway because it's pretty new. I generally have no problems with this store, except for when I need to apply some coupon or deal I clipped through the app and it doesn't work correctly at the register. At that moment, I wonder if I should just leave all my stuff behind and walk out the door. Dealing with the employees to fix my issues is the worst. They look so annoyed to help to resolve your issue, and often just shrug and stand there doing nothing. Even if I want to cancel my transaction out of frustration, I still need to flag down an employee. 4 stars for a nice store. 2 stars for the cashier employees. read more

Been meaning to visit this Safeway for a little bit, as I like to see new businesses open up, even if they are a huge corporation/franchise. This is a large Safeway, and pretty much carries all the stuff that the location in Milpitas does. Which is a lot of stuff. Got a sandwich and some sushi today and they were all great. I like Safeway, always have. They offer a variety of products, and overall they are usually pretty good. This is a nice location despite it being next to some sort dust/dirt factory. read more

The murals. Those murals! Those amazing murals depicting a retro San Jose when the valley was for the heart delight and silicon was not a thing. That is the first thing that caught my attention when visiting this new Safeway located in my former neighborhood. Spacious parking, all sparkling clean and still smelling like new. Then, right there at the entrance...my favorite product: flowers, flowers and more flowers. Grown in California withove and fresh like the first rain in spring. Spacious store, plenty of everything. Sleek and modern. What a great addendum to that area that was laking a big affordable grocery store chain. And next to Bart and then Flea market. Many pluses. read more

The grand opening of the Safeway was today. So nice to have a Safeway in the neighborhood. Friendly staff, plenty of staff. It feels almost the size of Rivermark's Safeway. Hope they get a lot of good customers and keep the produce quality high! Meat counter was nicely stocked! Picked up about 15 lbs of meat. One slight negative was that I should have bagged the pork with a produce bag. It leaked meat juice all over the complimentary nice reusable bag they were giving out. Little aisle names had all the local street names. So that was a nice touch too. read more

I've been to this Safeway a few times since it recently opened. It's located across from the Flea Market and Berryessa BART Station. Everything looks fresh and new, so the challenge will be keeping it that way. The parking lot isn't that big, so I'll be curious to see how it goes as other businesses open. I'll also be curious to see if the residents from the adjacent apartments and condos use this lot for their vehicles. The aisles are spacious and everything is labeled and displayed really well. The produce and meat sections are organized and well stocked. There is a Starbucks located inside for you Java lovers. Starbucks ran an opening special too. Any handcrafted grande size beverage for only $2. What a deal and I made sure to take advantage of it a few times. read more

I think it's a location problem and industry issue of hiring enough workers. So checkout may be long. Also probably not enough people checking quality of fruits and dumping out damaged looking ones. This location also has people standing in parking lot by the parked cars asking for money. As well as people trying to sell stuff with their trunks open, they yell stuff but i don't understand coz it's not in English.Some produce is sub par in quality compared to whole food or trader joe. Fruit brand is no problem, but the banana is overriped and the cuties (name brand that costco also has) all have some mold in them. I asked for a discount for a batch that had the fewest molded one and one clerk said ok, the other clerk said they will just take it back. The first clerk actually remarked that they found a bunch of molded cuties a few days ago.I love Safeway in general. But I think it is behind the times .Take for example whole foods. They search out and get different local suppliers to meet evolving taste of their customers. Right now I highly recommend getting organic mandarins from them. The brand is called fruitworld. They taste sweeter than Cuties. Look beautiful and around the same price as the damaged looking ones at Safeway. The point is we as customers are not getting enough value at Safeway. I do appreciate saving 26% today with Safeway member card,. but for things that are not on sale.. why should we pay non discounted price for a bag of cuties (mandarin orange) that had some damage? All the bags are mostly like that. Why pay full price for damaged fruit. I hope management in the future will be able to empower all cashier's to discount produce that is bruised or like one in a bag damaged instead of wasting the whole bag. read more

There is nothing fresh here! With this newer Safeway, there were high hopes of a much improved shopping experience compared to the other Safeway up the road. Sadly, this is not to be! Just walk through the produce area and you will find stale, moldy, over ripe, not edible, low quality fruits and vegetables. Then stroll through the bakery adjacent to the produce and you will also find nothing edible unless you want a sodium overload and the taste of baking powder throughout everything. Once upon a time, Safeway was a good store with fresh products. But with the acquisition by Albertsons, everything here is just pure sadness. The employees they hire are clueless and not friendly and it shows. Good luck finding anything from their weekly ads on the shelves. This location is poorly managed and you are better off heading over to the Safeway super store in Santa Clara or shopping elsewhere. read more

This is a great store and has a ton of other great stores nearby. I love the deli options. My only reason for this review is that the deli served dry, old chicken wings tres to me twice. They were hard as a rock and the store was too far for me to return them. My suggestion would be to maybe stop cooking so many in advance. They always look fresh but each time I've gotten them from this particular store they're dry and hard, overcooked or either sat under the heat lamp too long. They do not taste fresh. And they're expensive so I prefer fresh chicken. read more

This is the best Safety ever !! The staff is super friendly:) The store is cool and clean. They always have beautiful flowers and cute little items for sale. I love the deli and all their ready to eat meals. The bakery always has beautiful cookie and dessert trays. Most importantly shot out to the Sushi department fir always being fully stocked especially with my favorite cream cheese salmon avocado roll. The sushi man is very nice always ready to help and always says hi bye and Thank you. I would drive miles. Love this store. read more

The cleanest Safeway I've ever been in and it's a much better alternative compared to the Safeway near Berryessa and Capital Ave. The parking lot always has plenty of room and is very spacious. This Safeway doesn't get really busy, so the lines are generally very reasonable and short. There's a Starbucks inside so you can grab coffee on the way out. There's also a SomiSomi in the same plaza and I never really understood why this plaza doesn't get more foot traffic. Never really had any problems with this Safeway and it's conveniently close to me. Would recommend to anyone passing by. read more

For me.. excellent service from the clerks at check out. They extremely friendly, attentive, they bag with awareness and courteousness, and genuinely smile (that's the cherry on top) Service alone is 10 stars!!!! Keep doing what ya'll are doing. :) As for the hot and ready food.. it's a 1 star...:( I'm a pizza stick, potato wedge and chicken nugget person and Safeway has never disappointed until now. I get my 3 favorites all the time from the Santa Clara locations and the old berryessa location...for some reason, at this Safeway location, I'm not sure of the type of oil the food is being fried in, but the food has a strange taste to it.. it's like lighter fluid or burned plastic taste.. something's just not right.. I've shopped at this Safeway since it's opened, but have only bought from the hot and ready food in August and this month.. can someone look into it? Went to the grand opening on 4/28/21. I'm 39 and have lived in this neighborhood all my life and this Safeway is what this neighborhood has been needing for a long, long time! I've passed by every morning on my way to work for the past 1-2 years and have seen the progression and watched the lady paint the murals day by day, it was gorgeous to see! Finally, a Safeway less than a mile away and I no longer need to go to the crowded older one up on Berryessa. No need to go all the way to Rivermark or Calaveras, either. The thing that irked me the most about the older one on Berryessa was their drive up orders. They only have 3 parking spots and everyone would park there to go inside to shop! Nowhere for us to park if we are just picking up our orders! This new one has plenty of open Drive Up spots! Bonus is their current awesoms deal on Breyers, Ben & Jerry's, and other ice creams! BOGO through Tuesday, May 4th! I also love their large selection of beautiful flowers! They gave me a free reusable Safeway bag on opening day. Someone posted a pic of Biscoff ice cream and their first time seeing it. The other Safeways have carried it and Biscoff ice cream bars since last summer, so this isn't the only place that carries it, FYI. I'll be frequenting this store from now on, but I predict the parking lot will get crowded and packed once the whole plaza is fully open and operating, especially Somi Somi! read more

I'm reviewing this as Third party partner. Why is only one person working the third party pick up delivery line every single day. It backs up every single day and some of us have to wait over an hour just to get to the front. It takes each person over 5-10 minutes to be serviced by the only person working back there and that does not include when he stops service for the delivery and go customers that show up. There has to be a better way to set this station up whether it more employees or set up in general. Please fix this major issue read more

This is a crappy store not only in person but especially for online orders. I placed a $300+ order to be delivered . I received only $180 worth of the order. When I called the store to find out what happened (05/24/23 @8:30am) a very rude manager told me that their online order system was down. I asked why I hadn't been refunded the $120+ shortage and why wasn't I called to be informed and given the choice of cancellation of the whole order. The female manager's reply was, " oh I guess I could have done that hmmmmm!" Safeway has deteriorated since it was sold to Albertsons. DO NOT ORDER ONLINE AND DO JOT USE THIS STORE. Very poor customer service from the deli manager Cesar who seemed out out that I asked for a chi tender sandwich (I've ordered this at multiple other Safeway without incident, mind you!). He says he will make it for me THIS ONCE but will need to charge extra! Why I would get thus Sandwich at every other Safeway (including this one once) and Cesar is making a huge deal is beyond me! He told me each Deli is allowed to make up their own policies! I will never shop here again there is another Safeway up the road on at Capitol anyways! Disgusting. Mariela treated my mom horribly when she was trying to purchase some items. I was on the phone with my mom, who is elderly and not great at communicating, but Mariela refused to talk to me on the phone. Asked for the manager, she not only refused to talk to me on the phone but also covered up her name tag when my mom asked for her name. Ok I do not like coming here. 1/10 staff members are not helpful or are just plain rude. The 1 out of every ten though is really nice and helpful. I don't know why but when I do get help from a willing staff member at this Safeway it's really good. When it's not it's really bad. I had to wait 20 mins for help at self check out multiple times. At this point if no one comes I just leave the stuff there and walk away because it's crazy that I have to beg to be helped then treated like trash because I'm inconveniencing the staff. Then all the anti mask customer and staff just don't care. I understand you don't want to where a mask but it's says it required for entry but when the staff doesn't care why should you. Watch out as well as there are homeless that roam the parking lot constantly begging or lurking around you cars. It's not the safest Safeway in town. I only come here on urgent stuff. This location is a large superstore. It's clean, lots of aisles with organized stock, spacious, and had a high ceiling. It also has a Starbucks inside. Next to Starbucks, there are sections of deli, sushi, Panda Express type of Chinese fast food, and other convenient cooked and packaged food ready to be served. Perhaps due to it cleanliness and spaciousnesses, it feels very refreshing and welcoming when walked in to the store. read more
