Aside from SJ Japantown there are so few Japanese supermarket in the South Bay. Japanese restaurants are getting more pricier and cater to Western taste quality is not up to par usually managed or owned by non-Japanese and quite often not so authentic. Mitsuwa has been around since 1998 serving authentic Japanese meals and they put an array of ready to go bento, sashimi, poke, sushi and much more cheaper than dining out at a Japanese restaurants. Employees are very attentive kind and helpful. All the products are shipped from Japan and they have fresh produce, meat, fish and fruits. I come here a lot to get snacks and some groceries, but on my previous visit; I felt like I was being profiled by an older lady who worked at the cashier. She either thought I was going to steal stuff at the self checkout then questioned if I had any money (when I clearly do), and haggled me a bit. It was overall good, but it definitely is just a sushi platter from a market rather than a restaurant. It's kept in the fridge, and not freshly made right as you order, so the rice is cold. What a fabulous store!! Went here today to buy some rice crackers and candies. Was only gonna send a few dollars....... $300.00 dollars and 45 minutes later after arriving, I realized I had fallen in love with a grocery store! This place is wonderful! The final bastion before Fanime or the stop to refuel afterwards. It's always so fun to see people with their badges here or in cosplay which makes it doubly hilarious since you're nowhere close to the actual even either. But I digress. I'm spoiled by the multiple and massive Mitsuwas in SoCal, especially those with more specialty shops and bigger food courts, but this location fills the niche that it has in NorCal. Visited during one of their "festival" events where they imported in karaage, had a make up sale, and also had some samples, which is neat. Make no mistake we love these kind of grocery stores. Be it Mexican, Persian, Indian, Cambodian, and now Japanese, they are always an adventure. I had briefly been in years back as they are one of the few places outside of NYC you can buy Royce Chocolates in person. This time we took a deeper dive. Obviously this one was all about japan. Lots of everyday and specialty items and they even have a small food court. There is a separate area that has too many premium chocolate (like Royce) to mention them all. I normally get the Philly roll here, I was a little disappointed today because the rice quality was a bit mushier than normal. Nonetheless I will still grab one if I'm there. More hot deli options from different Japanese prefectures are worth trying. The ramen shop here is so popular that there's always a long line during lunch, especially on weekends. It's been that way for over a decade, since I was a college student. They even have Mochill Donut if you have a sweet tooth for coated mochi donuts. If not, there's Mochi-ya Ren, known for its only Matcha Mont Blanc soft serves you can find in the Bay Area. The associate was friendly when I asked to look for a specific item. I love this store! We used to come here a lot although we live about 2 hours away. We like santouka ramen and their test kitchen during the weekend, they have fresh yaki imo and roasted Chestnut. I had been to Mitsuwa Market down in Mar Vista, and loved it, so when we were in the area, we decided to check it out. The store itself is 5 stars to me as they have something for everyone. The only reason for 1 star off is that the parking here is horrific. The parking lot is shared with other stores and restaurants in the shopping center, so it is extremely difficult to find parking. People are very aggressive when fighting over parking spaces and when leaving, be very careful of people driving around cars that are parked waiting for someone to leave a parking spot. Be prepared to spend 10-20 minutes finding a parking spot unless you get very lucky! read more

For a grocery store, it's quite a community hub! When I lived relatively close by, I'd come here regularly. It has a bookstore, several restaurants inside and around it, and a chocolate store as well. There's tables for customers of the restaurants to sit and hang out at too. I love that multiple businesses are built together like this! The store itself has good lighting, a wide variety of snacks, makeup, cooking utensils, groceries, alcohol. There's self-checkout and normal checkout lanes, and it doesn't ever seem to get too loud. read more

Also some raw sushi and sashimi but they are just average . It is a bit strange that no wasabi and chop stick came with the package. When we asked the cashier she told us that she could not give us any . There are many tables in the food court . Do they expect us to eat sashimi with our hands ? I love the Raman place in the food court . It is a famous chained Ramen place and it has been there past 20 years . The broth is tasty and char soy is big size . Must-visit for Japanese goodies and their food fairs throughout the year. Recently, I went to the Tohoku & Gourmet Food Fair. I tried the Deep-Fried Chicken, which had a perfect salty flavor, crispy on the outside and tender inside, at a fair price of $9.99. The Ohagi Assorted (3 pc) for $12 offered a delightful, authentic Japanese dessert, each piece rich with sweetened rice and red bean paste. The items sold for the fair are first come, first serve. This big supermarket is located at the Mitsuwa plaza. It's a one stop shop supermarket with a food court, mochi shop, anime store, Kinokuniya book store, and several other stores in there. The supermarket sells fresh vegis, fruits, various cuts of meats, household items, huge selection of booze, baked goods, premade meals, lots of frozen food, beauty products, and snacks. The mochi store sold a good variety of fresh mochi and they looked very appealing. They are nicely packaged in gift boxes. They definitely make nice gifts. The food court have stalls that sell udon, ramen, matcha, crepes, mochi doughnuts, and takoyakis. We ate right before shopping here for we didn't patronize any of the food stalls. This will give us a good excuse to stop by again here when we're in the neighborhood. read more

I bought the knife in this store but realized that knife is a high carbon steel and when i cut my fruit it made my fruit turn into black and I dont like it. I tried to bring it back next day and asking for exchange the different ones ( stainless steel). They ask me so many questions such as : why you want to return it? ( I explain the same thing), what kind of fruit you cut? And he said this is not for fruit....this is for vegetables) . By the way they just want to selling their products without return accept in their policy , even when i gave reasonable to return the product. I've been shopping at Mitsuwa Marketplace for over 20 years and realized I never wrote them a Yelp review. It's my go-to Japanese market in the bay area. Located conveniently off 280 and Saratoga intersections, albeit one of the busiest intersections, it's easy to get to. Parking can be rough at times given the fact that the lot is shared among many other shops and restaurants. There is a side/back parking lot just to the left of Mitsuwa though where I've generally been able to find spaces. They carry a good selection of fresh vegetables and fruits, fresh meats, sushi-grade fish, prepared foods, and a variety of dry foods. The Kinokuniya bookstore and Santouka Ramen are located inside as well and always draw a big crowd. read more

Love Mitsuwa. There's always something new to try. I've been venturing into the freshly made tsukemono deli(?) area in the left hand side of the market more lately. Love all the different pickled vegetables and bamboo I've purchased so far. You know what was NOT good though?! The pickled mustard (tezukuri honwasabi). I don't know what the heck that flavor combo was but it was gross and tasted like the bottom of an old and very yeasty beer can. Nooooooo. Everything else has been great though, haha. read more
