    Star Apple and Guava

I was looking for star apple and cherimoya and custard apple and they have both cherimoya and star apple. The grocery is clean and it's organized. Staff were able to answer questions. They are friendly. It's worth the drive from West San Jose.

So happy to find a Chinese market that sells incense because Mom is visiting and she wanted to do some praying at home. There is a tight parking lot which takes some time to maneuver but it's free. Fresh fish and produce. This is a very good option other than the usual ranch 99 in the area for everything Asian and desserts. It's also a bit cheaper than ranch 99.

I've stopped by twice this week as we are throwing a birthday party this weekend. Love their selection of goods. Super easy to pick up everything you need for a homecooked Asian inspired dish. They have all the right sauces, dips, herbs, spices, fresh produce, and meat selection. For large parties, you can request for meat by the "bag" and it's less than what's displayed at the meat counter. For example, a slab of beef was listed as $4.99 per pound but when we asked for the "bag" -- it was $3.80 per pound. Also, 40 pounds of chicken wings for $48 -- definitely a great deal. The vegetables are individually bagged and all stored in a refrigerator. The store is under construction (September 2019) and judging from all the hammering and drilling I heard, they will likely be under construction for another 6 months or so. But, they are open for business. Stop by for your grocery needs. Almost guaranteed to leave with something your kitchen needs.

I answered, "Oh, I am going to write a review." He looked puzzled, then replied, "We don't allow photos!" Oh, ok this person is on staff at the market. Alright. I am not deterred. Honestly, it didn't feel like a newly remodeled store. It felt more like they just put up a new sign outside. They might as well have had a banner that said "under new management." Lee's is known for their great sandwiches, so I expected more of a café-style setup where you could browse a variety of sandwiches and maybe sit down to eat. Instead, there's no seating area and the menu is just a large LCD screen listing sandwich names and prices with no photos. The store itself feels cramped, with most of the space dedicated to shelves rather than any place to relax or enjoy food. I was hoping for something closer to a Whole Foods style experience where you could grab a sandwich, a drink, and maybe meet friends. Instead, it feels like a typical Asian market without much innovation. The one cool touch was that every checkout lane had fresh baked baguettes ready to go. That and my sandwich was delicious but instead of eating it right than and there I had to drive home in traffic and eat it cold. I just love eating em' freshly made and the bread right out of the oven. For sandwiches, I'll probably stick to the regular Lee's Sandwich locations nearby.

I will say though that I don't like how ginger and shallots are offered in bulk, so I go to Lucky's or Safeway for them but I usually take care of everything in one place. Oh, I like to get my ground meat from Lucky's or Safeway or Walmart because of the fat content. I want to see the nutrition label as opposed to asking the gentlemen in the back to get me 2lbs, etc. w/o knowledge of how much fat is in it even if I choose "lean." Go early because parking is not easy and the store can be incredibly crowded. Lines aren't messy even though they can be long. I'm an easy customer and because I'm OCD, I load the items on the conveyer by categories and I inform the checker at the beginning that I would like to purchase bags - as many as needed but usually I eyeball it and tell them I need 5 bags, etc. I have made the following dishes from the groceries I purchased here: 1. pho 2. kimchi udon 3. canh dua 4. heo quay 5. pho xao bo 6. mi xao bo 7. thit dong 8. ca ri ga 9. bun rieu 10. banh gio I don't have any complaints. That aside, let me summarize my thoughts by saying: I'd come again. And again. And...well, you get the idea. My Spanish isn't great, but the staff largely understood and spoke English, and were pleasant and happy to help me find what I needed. The prices were quite agreeable. I bought 17 items, consisting of 3 large (600 ml) beverages, 2 smaller beverages, 3 hefty cans of tuna soup, 2 large palettes of canned sardines in tomato sauce, 6 tins of canned sausages, and 1 cup noodle. This, in total, cost me just under 55 dollars. 3.24 dollars per item, on average, is hardly something to complain about. And the quality of the goods was impressive, too. - The beverages I bought were five different varieties of the Vive100 energy drink. I've only had a chance to try the original (all green) and Fusion (red) versions, but let me just say: they taste far more natural than any other caffeinated energy drink I've had. Maybe it's the natural cane sugar, but the flavoring just feels smoother and less aggressively "chemical" as well. - The tuna soups I bought were "encebollado de atún," and contained whole chunks of tuna, savory broth, potatoes, onions, and some other greens and spices. For only about 3-4 dollars and 224-250 calories, they were incredibly filling and wholesome. The two brands were Real and Manabí, and I recommend you try both. - Of the canned sardines in tomato sauce, I've yet to try the Real brand, but La Sirena is excellent: hearty, meaty, flavorful, and barely metallic at all. I don't recommend the Iberia brand (which Chaparral carries, but I didn't buy), as the fish is tough, and the sauce is thin and tastes more of metal than tomato. - The canned sausages were Rica Rondo brand vienna sausages. Not the best vienna sausages I've had (Libby's tends to be less salty, more tender, and more flavorful), but still a good enough pick-me-up snack that can easily be consumed on the go. The parking is no issue. Even though the lot (located to the right of the main entrance) is on the smaller side, I've never had trouble finding a spot. Once you go to the entrance, you'll see a sign that says backpacks, among other things, are not permitted inside. No problem, since they offer shopping baskets and give offer bags (for 20 cents) at checkout. Three things you'll want to consider before going: - One, the supermarket does have a "structured flow" for traffic; aside from the pockets of products near the entrance, the frozen food section, and the meat section, all aisles are one-direction only. This can be unintuitive to people who are used to typical American supermarkets, but takes little time to get adjusted to. - Two, foods are arranged first by country of origin, and then by product type, which means that you might see similar products in different parts of the store. - Three, there are no restrooms available for customer use.

Everything here is expensive -- even the air feels like it has a service fee -- but that's just California life. That's why Chaparral Supermarket is such a gem. What really impressed me is their vast selection of Colombian foods and treats. As a Colombian myself, finding familiar products from home while living away from home truly means a lot. From snacks to staples, they carry items that are hard to find elsewhere in the area, and it instantly made me feel a little more grounded as a newcomer to the state. Yes, prices are higher than what I was used to back in Miami -- but for Northern California, it's expected, and honestly, worth it for the selection and convenience. You can't really complain when you're getting a taste of home in a place where that's not always easy to find. If you're Colombian, Latin American, or just someone who loves exploring authentic international foods beyond the usual options, this place is 100% worth a visit. Chaparral makes being far from home feel a little closer.
