I have contemplated on leaving a review for a long time. This review is strictly based in dates. PLEASE....check the sell by dates. I have been in this store numerous times and have noticed expired dates. A few months back I picked up a gallon of milk with a sell buy date of 3 days prior to current date. I normally check all dates, maybe I was in a hurry. I go back to return it and the girl at customer service says, " that's just the sell buy...not an expiration". Ummm, wtf you drink it...I'd like a longer date. Next occurrence was at self check out with the shorter blonde lady....I had scanned a coupon that had expired...ok, no biggie...I explained to her as she was overriding my transaction that once again the milk that expired dates on it....and proceeded to school me on why it declined the coupon....umm, again it's no big deal but really expired milk.....so, today I go in to return another expired item... Annoyed that I had to make a special return trip for 3.49$. So, I walked around the store. A few items that I know from prior work experience to have expired dates and low and behold. The first 2 items I spin... Small jar of miracle whip and small jar of kraft sandwich spread. Expired. Granted I don't eat that but I'm sure some people do...so, please just check more than dairy and meat dates....this only took me 2 minutes to find and in dairy quite a few milks had yesterday's date read more

I bought a frozen lasagna that was in a tin tray, I later opened it weeks later to cook the tin tray had deteriorated on top and aluminum had fallen onto the cheese. I took it back and Safeway told me customer service was close after eight but they could talk to me at the register. At the register the guy said anything over $10 could not be refunded and handed me back the tray. (I don't know what he expected me to do with the bad lasagna that serves 12 people). So I threw the giant lasagna out in one of their tiny waist baskets and bought myself some more food for dinner that night and went home. They didn't even ask me what was wrong with the food. Horrible Deli staff Saturday 10/10 @ 4 pm. Didn't know the different types of bread, didn't have certain types of bread available for the Signature sandwich menu, poor hires (who hires a vegetarian to work in deli?!), poor training, poor supervision. Lets set the scene. Husband with 5 month old goes to safeway to get his wife's favorite ice cream treat, one only carried by them, and one that will hopefully make her smile after a long week at work. The one star is NOT because they were out of stock of the item, as one would think (yes, they were out of the item too) no, the one star is for the stupid self checkout stations cleverly disguised as time saving.. Went through the entire process, even having to remove items and rescan or re-weigh because what should be easy and logical is nothing close. And at the very end....im asked "how many bags did you use?" Because i love the earth (and dont want to be bag-shamed in capitola) i tell the machine that no, i used none of their bags. "PLEASE WAIT FOR SERVICE PERSON" 10 MINUTES LATER! I shop at the 41st ave location 5 times a week at least. Today's 1 star based solely on a young checker with a bad attitude named Andreas. I was in the express lane waiting patiently behind two other customers the gentleman in front of me and I arrived at the same time. When it was the mans turn In front of me Andreas came from around the counter and without saying anything out the rope up right in front of me. I said"I've been in line the whole time" "sorry" is all I got back from him. Now I know cashiers have their reasons, but after working in the industry myself for 20+ years I know there is a proper way of doing it. If they had more organic items and made their Safeway Select pizzas stocked up better with BBQ pizzas, they would have all my business. Very convenient location and open 24 hrs. The cashiers are always friendly, however the lifer baggers/cart collectors need to be replaced. They walk around the store in a "la dee dah", "I hate my job but this is the best I can do" way. Not helpful or friendly. I know there is a high employee turnover rate there but there a couple of them who are always there who suck. I've started using the self check out just so I can avoid them. I think their correct job title is "courtesy clerks" but there is no courtesy involved here so they are baggers/cart collectors to me. I can't describe them without being rude so I'll just call them 2 Lifers as Baggers because it is obvious they don't have much going for them in their lives. Bleh. Butcher is nice, cashiers seem friendly but the main reason i go to this location is the Pharmacy. This team seems to be a well oiled machine. i have never had any issues (yet) with my rx and they are always helpful and professional. My husband, who has trouble moving, tried to get water from water dispensers inside the store. Walked past lady managing store entry/exit outside the store with empty water bottles to fill in his cart - nothing said. Walked all the way to machines in back of store - machines turned off. No signs outside describing this. As he walked out, all the lady said to him was - leave your cart over there. So insensitive and unhelpful at this time! If machines are not working, a sign outside would help everybody - less contact in store, less walking for people who can't do it well. Very bad experience. read more

I had such a great experience with getting my Covid booster and flu shot. The process was so easy, The gal that checked me in was nice. Connie who was giving the vaccines today was great she went above and beyond explaining everything. I took my sons in later to get the same vaccines and again Connie was so patient explaining everything to them and how to stay hydrated and exercise that arm. So this is my local spot, well was my local spot, twice now I've gone in after work (6:40 pm ) to get stuff for my lunches and been told the deli is not slicing meat or cheese at this hour. Really? this hour? The first time was on a Saturday night and I figured it my be a Saturday thing no harm no foul I came back to the store on Sunday and got what I needed. The second time is on week night @ 6:40 pm which is when I pass through on my way home from work and i was told after standing there in front of the deli meats while waiting for the clerk to finish up with another customer the same story, you're too late sorry try tomorrow. I called to see if they had a certain flavor of cocoa made by Safeway. A woman who said her name was "Pammy" hung up on me instead of putting me on hold. I quickly called back and she said they didn't even carry the product and that I should try Delux Foods in Aptos. I said it was odd that they didn't carry it since it was a Safeway signature brand. I asked if she wouldn't mind walking g and physically checking fir me. She said that she already did ( which was also odd because the amount of time that passed from when she hung up in my to when I called back was about 30 seconds). She said that there was even a manager on the aisle and she even asked and they also said that they didn't carry it. I said thank you and asked get make, after an awkward pause she said it was Pammy. So I decided to drive all the way to Aptos Safeway to get this cocoa. Along the way I thought I'd just check Safeway 41st since I didn't feel at all confident in "Pammy's" abilities. Sure enough, I get here and there's a full shelf full of the white cocoa. Thanks "Pammy"! I spoke with a manager who said that there was no one there named Pammy but she knew it was Tawny. So either Tawny/Pammy lied to me or is blind as a bat and incompetent! I don't know which is worse. Either way, it was horrible customer service and I'm really disappointed. I called at 7:08 pm Monday May 27th at 41st ave Safeway. I hope someone gets back to me and let's me know what actions were taken to make sure Pammy/Tawny doesn't do this to other customers. Ok, so this Safeway as a whole isn't that bad. They have a good selection of food, they try to check people out quickly and bag properly. The problem? Two times out of two I've purchased their select fried chicken and it's been dryer than an Egyptian mummy. I'm not even exaggerating. It was the driest chicken I've ever had in my life, I ended up throwing most of it away because it was not edible. Why did I go back for a second try you might ask? Because I purchased some a couple of months ago and it was really good! So I don't know what's changed, but this chicken shouldn't be out there for consumers to buy. I love this Safeway. I've shopped there for years. Great selection, customer service, and set up. This review is for one thing in paticular. Although their self packaged infused waters are delicious, I bought a few today, two being the Lemon, Mint, and Rosemary ones and every piece of lemon had the barcode sticker still on the lemon. 1. Who wouldn't take off the wrapper? 2. Who wants to drink plastic? 3. What if my 3 or 4 year old had been drinking it and choked? Someone really needs to fix this problem. It's gross. The lead pharmacist is unethical, unprofessional and violates HIPAA. He has no idea how to deal with people who obviously have health issues, otherwise why would they be at a pharmacy in the first place? Its a sad day when a patient/customer has to educate a "Lead" pharmacist about medication and how to appropriately address the type of medication and what it is prescribed for. And when I told him it wasn't ok to shout out what he said, his only response was "nobody was nearby to hear it." Shame on him, shame on Safeway for keeping him employed. And shame on safeway corporate compliance for doing nothing about it when I reported him, except dropping my complaint with no explanation. HIPAA and karma will catch up to you, I promise! read more

Safeway likes to buy beef at knock off market prices then if that beef turns out to be of shit quality, they chop that beef price in half and pass along the crap beef to the consumer, rather than just grind it up for burger meat or refuse to do business with bad sellers. Steaks as tough as shoe leather, extremely poor marbling(fat content) in the meat. Would bet the farm these are dairy cows that don't milk anymore so they just cut em up for low end beef. This kinda crap cow isn't beef its cow!!! Steaks are made from cattle 8 to 12 months old. Also got Ground beef with three different colors which is suspiciously old mixed with new cut to save costs. There was a time Safeway had pretty good beef but it looks like they went cheap and went for the profits verses quality and happy customers. 24 years came to local safeway stores however wont be back anytime soon to get my meats here, Poor standards means avoid!!! read more

Utter trainwreck of a store. Poorly stocked, not particularly clean, customers wandering looking lost, unbelievably enormous line that stretch all the way around aisles and back - with only one line open and no-one on the intercom calling for help. They just simply do not care about customers' experience. Add to that Safeway's absurd prices and I'm never going there again. When you deal with a big chain, you end up with "Big Chain" Policies. I purchased $250.00 worth of "Shell" Gas Cards as a gift to my Brother-in-Law that lives in Alaska. I came to find out that Shell is not located in Alaska so I went back to speak to the Manager about returning the Gift Card for credit against the credit card I used to purchase them with the receipt. The response was, "It is our Policy to NOT accept returns on Gift Card which is clearly displayed on the Gift Card rack" Lesson Learned??? (Safeway wins the battle, but lost the war) -Our family use to spend about $200+ week (over $10,000 per year) at Safeway. We have 100% shifted our business to Nob Hill and Trader Joe's. Imagine if you will the following scenario. Whole Foods and Safeway get married. They have children, and move into a Costco building, but decide that it's old and outdated, so they spruce it up, inside and out. That's pretty much what this Safeway did. Moved into an old k-mart, spruced up the facade, expanded, and got some really nice organic produce sections. Seriously this has got to be the biggest grocery store I've ever seen. It's so massive that when I go with my girlfriend I'm often reluctant to split up to get the shopping done twice as fast for fear of losing each other. Which brings me to my next point. It's a shame we need these gigantor retailers, but where else are you going to get the best paper towel deals and stock up on frozen peas? Gotta love those club card savings. I do like this Safeway store for a couple of reasons though, the butcher shop here is nice and extensive and the wine selection here is large and impressive (lot's of good deals!). Like all of the Safeway stores in town the check out lines are usually ridiculously long. The self check out is also kind of a pain. I know it's meant to be helpful but I always feel clumsy using it. Parking and getting in and out of the lot is always a hassle for me too. I find coming to this location to be more than a little stressful. Safeway side note: I've noticed that the deli food from Safeway all has the same weird aftertaste no matter which store you get it from. I wonder what the strange proprietary Safeway spice combo is? I still like Dan. He's still at the pharmacy. Safeway is ok on the whole. The parking lot is filthy, litter blowing in the wind (I suppose some might think that image is romantic). There is a person working in the pharmacy that is very cranky, I hate doing business with them any longer. Not even Dan can save it this time. I was buying my prescriptions online to avoid dealing with this person, always crabby, always questioning. This person has huge control issues and takes their issues out on the customers. I can relate to this person's control issues on some level, yet, at the same time, I don't understand how this person stays employed. This person is completely anti-customer. I don't know how the person stays employed with the attitude. I can't deal with it any longer. So if you want to know why I don't come there, it's because of this person who is rude and sad and controlling. I shop at other stores. read more

One star for making me get up and go there and get my own NyQuil, during the worst flu, because they wouldn't let my 19 year old daughter buy it. They expanded this store last year and it is pretty nice. They have a pretty big area in the front of the store with tables (which my hubby calls 'homeless wireless hangout') Blockbuster kiosks, a banking center, a Jamba Juice and of course a Starbucks. Nice for when you want to grab a little something before you shop, not so great when your kids beg you for stuff as you enter the store. I really like the self check out center (I fell in love with these when we lived in Chicago) for some reason I really like to check myself out. Of course it isn't so great when you forget to have someone take off the security top on the tequila you took home. You would think with an expanded space bigger than most stores in the county (except the even bigger behemoth on the Westside) they would have more options than the other stores. And other than the nice kitchen tools section they really just have the same stuff as their other locations. Dependable store open late when you need it.
