Annoying and very poor customer service!!!!!! I went to ask a staff nicely for an assistance with the water refilling since it is our first time to use it , there's this other staff who bluntly told me that it was broken. I asked again if all the machines weren't working, she just ignored me. Obviously, she doesnt want to help or move as she was busy flipping through a magazine while chatting with another staff..Thinking that she was telling the truth, i went back to tell my husband that the machine is not working, when he was already filling are water bottles.. I hope safeway would so something about these kind of staff!!! read more

I stopped at this safeway to stop at the bank and decided to get ice cream since it was on sale. I went to self check-out because I only had three items and the older African American woman who worked the cashier at the self check-out was extremely rude! Not only to me, but, rude to another woman on the other side of the self check-out. This woman should NOT be working in customer service and should definitely be addressed by management. I will be contacting the Safeway corporate office because of this woman. I never go above and beyond in regards to complaining about people with bad attitudes, but, you can tell she is like this normally and on a daily basis. Not to mention, another woman and I had to wait for her to get to the cashier in order to purchase the items. Today was the third time I've experienced incredible rudeness at this store. The first time was about three years ago (yes, it was bad enough to remember that long!) when a woman came over the loud speaker yelling at everyone to keep their hands off the corn on the cob. People stopped in the aisles and looked at each other in disbelief. More recently I've had two checkers shout me down. This morning, I went there to get the large refrigerator bottles of spring water because Trader Joe's doesn't have them. The checker (a young male) didn't consider taking one out of the cart to scan it and instead spent a lot of time looking through his little book saying he didn't know if it was there or not. I finally got fed up and picked one up myself (me - 65-year-old woman) and plonked in on the counter. He then handed me the receipt and started to walk off. I asked if he was going to put it back in the cart and all hell broke loose. No matter what I said, he just wanted to shout me down and be the winner. I went and complained to a very young woman at the customer service desk who said she'd let the manager know, but I got the feeling the incident would be forgotten as soon as I left. Very, very, very rude store. I think they must take rudeness lessons to be this consistently rude over the years. read more

This is my neighborhood Safeway. It is in an area where there are some "characters". I shop here regularly they carry pretty much everything I need. parking can be crazy and it seems they never have enough cashiers. It can be a little unsettling late at night but I haven't run into anything too crazy. read more

I've been shopping at this Safeway before it was even Safeway Marketplace. I used to like going to this store but now I try to go to the Lucky's on Union Landing on the other side of Union City. I get a very little amount of cashiers that are friendly just like the older Japanese lady who works in the morning. She's been there for awhile, she knows what she's doing and she's very friendly. Now, for the rest of the other ones especially on weekends are not friendly especially if you have coupons they act like your wasting their precious time. I keep running into ones who doesn't know how to enter the coupons on their system. There are now a lot of coupons that you can print online & they act like they've never seen them before and/or are not sure exactly how to handle them. A lot of these cashiers need to be trained on being friendly & in giving customer service. One lady who I avoid everytime I go in there is this older, red-headed lady with bangs. She's not friendly and is very snotty at times. She's there when I go in there on weekends. I wish they had an optional survey on the receipts so credit can be given to outstanding cashiers & cashiers who has no idea what-so-ever can get re-trained. I have tried many times to contact the store manager via phone to commend and to complain about certain cashiers and can never get through and she's rarely there when I'm shopping. Possibly the worst store ever. The prices are high but customer service is low. Even though it is close I no longer shop there and now drive to Raley's. I could write a book but the last straw was getting to my car and while loading my bags found one with tomatoes and fresh berries on the bottom with 6 ears of corn on top. Duh! The baggers don't know how to bag, the cashiers are few and far between so you have to allow 30 minutes in line. During Monopoly when getting coupons for free items (foil, salt, asprin) the shelves were bare so you couldn't redeem them. One day I decided to go to another Safeway only to find the entire deli department (cold cuts, salads, etc. as well as specialty cheeses) area was completely bare and dark. Don't bother. read more

9/20/2018 around 3:00p this is for the customer service counter. the woman who works there is terrible, non friendly, she got a smart mouth, and she's mean. I wanted change in quarters for a $5.00 bill, as she counts out the change she stops to talk to somebody (and stopped counting the change), I start to grab my quarters, $3.75,that was already counted. she snatched the quarters back, and said I'm not done. I said well you was talking. she finished counting and said now you can take them. that's beyond ludicrous. since when is it okay to talk that way to a customer.(just so you know I'm 49, she looks to be around 30 - 35) so she's not talking to a child. they should fire her bc she is very disrespectful. she's about 3 feet tall(you read that right), a mexican bc she speaks spanish, black hair in a feather hairstyle, and she always works in at the customer service counter. if I could give this rating a 0 I definitely would. read more

This is my go-to store. Normally, I have a pretty good experience. Some (2) of the checkers I avoid entirely, but that's not what this review is about. One of my favorite purchases are fresh-baked chocolate susan cookies. They normally are on the shelf, but lately, none to be found. Called the bakery this morning and placed an order for 3 boxes (24 each) for pickup this afternoon. My daughter picked up the cookies as planned and brought them home. I opened each box and transferred them to two cookie jars. One box had 24 cookies, the other two had (22) each. Called the Bakery. No satisfaction there. Manager not there today. Sounds petty, but if you bought a dozen eggs and only got 10 there would be a problem I'm guessing. Just wanted an apology and "sorry for the inconvenience" and when you come by in the future, here is my name and I will ensure you get taken care of. None of that happened. This will still be by go-to store, but if I buy these cookies again, I will make the bakery open the box and count them before I leave!! read more

Just moved back to area and it is very unfortunate this is the closest grocery store. Ugh! I'll drive 15 minutes further and go to Sprouts thank you. This store seems to have a high turnover, low morale, and low paying management so nobody makes any effort to even greet you with a simple smile. I've commented on many occasions to the checkers " Hi!! How are you doing today customer??" ( sarcasm) and they just stare at me. Oh and plan on bagging and putting your own groceries in your cart. Even "if" the checker decides to bag things get smooshed. Can you say " Time for an overhaul!" Last audit has to be horrible. #alldownhill read more

This is my go to Safeway. Haven't been in a long time, and I wanted to see the Halloween left over sale. They had good deals, but one off the items I had didn't have the 90% of and I asked the cashier by the name of TRACEY, what was the sale price... She had a very unpleasant attitude! She reponds with attitude, you need to type in your number. I do so, she then says, U want it? I said, well how much is it? As I asked earlier. It's .99 , I told her thats not 90% off... She was like well do u want it? Like really, I have never seen her! And want to make a complaint! Her manager heard the whole thing and came over and said, those aren't on sale?? I asked the manager can she please give me the deal? Manager said, no problem! She should have made her employee do it! I can't believe this lady was so nasty! Then, she makes a remark to the customer behind me! As I walk off, I hear her loud and clear. Oh, sorry about that! As if I was a big ass issue! Lady please! Shop elsewhere. Foods are overpriced. The store is completely understaffed, in the deli, and at the checkouts. Always long lines forcing one to do self-check out. Discounts should be provided to check & bag ones own groceries. And the woman named Selena (although you would not know it without asking, because she doesn't wear a name tag) is incredibly rude. I had to ask her name. She often staffs the self-check aisles. Safeway needs to hire &/or train staff how to be courteous to their customers. Take a lesson from Trader Joe's, Sprouts, or Whole Foods where I intend to do most of my shopping from now on. read more

I love shopping at Safeway, particularly the one in Union City. The employees are extremely helpful and friendly. Their facility is clean and the shelves are always neatly stocked. Other grocery stores have a tendency to run out of specific items such as Vitamin water, fruits, etc. On the other hand, Safeway U.C. is mindful about stocking and restocking their products. They have a huge selection of meats, seafood, and produce. I also like how they have Chinese food, sandwiches, baked chicken, and a host of other cooked meals for those who don't have time to cook. They offer freshly baked cakes and pastries in their bakery section. I love their gift and flower shop. It's perfect for last-minute shoppers, and the price is affordable. Lastly, they have a "Starbucks" stand inside, which makes it convenient for coffee lovers like me. read more

I've been going here to get water gallons filled with my dad every since I was 10 the spot hasn't changed at all they serve fresh produce everyday it's not that expensive since I have a club card and it reduces the price I'm proud to go here for food and other produce read more

I love this Safeway!!! They have by far the best selection of food I've ever found in a super market. I LOVE LOVE LOVE their sushi section, it's not all crusty like the one in trader Joe nor are they all vegi. My fave is the Dragon Roll it's so creamy and the avocados aren't black. The sushi lady there is sooo nice, one time i wanted to buy a spicy tuna roll and it was out :.( she made one for me right away they really made my day!! It's super nice Safeway and their service is soo nice not like some other supermarkets were you have to beg for service. Their bread shop is also really killer, definitely try out the jalapeno bread. This establishment gets No Stars for customer service. They get Five stars for Rudeness.They were rude to me and made me and my child wait a long time for them to review "security tapes" that would help me get my $25.00 refund for an item that a cashier pocketed. He even failed to give me an activation code for the giftcard. He just smiled and said bye to one of his "friends" leaving the store while pocketing my hard earned money. I am officially boycotting this Safeway location. I will not speak for all of the employees, but the business culture represented here reeks of thievery, laziness, lack of compliance, ineptitude regarding transaction protocol, and shoddy management/customer service skills. How can a National brand like Safeway cheat a Dad/tax payer of this community out of his hard earned money then act rude about it. They lost my business and I will surely NOT recommend them to my thousands of facebook friends. I've been very disappointed with this store lately. I have been shopping here for about 20 years and their customer service has definitely been lacking in the last 4 years or so. The produce has been poor and I've had to bring things back many times. And for how expensive the prices are I feel like the customer should be treated much better. Most of the stuff is not friendly at the checkout and the lions are extremely long. Even when I go in the middle of the day when it's not very crowded there seems to be minimal Checkers and never any baggers. We generally have to bag our own things like we are at a pack and save instead of Safeway. I spend at least $200 a week in this store and feel like the customers should be treated great and with a smile and there should be someone to bag our groceries and put them in our cart for us. Don't get me wrong there are some employees that are very friendly and that are nice but there are just as many that are not I hope that this improves read more

On Tuesday 9/26/17 I witnessed the staff at this store treat a lady that had her phone stolen without any compassion whatsoever. When she reported the incident, the manager acted put out and barely listened to the poor lady. It took forever to get the store security to get there and again no compassion or empathy. Once the police arrived the manager and other associates went about their business, some even rolling their eyes. I felt so bad for the lady and was again shocked by the lack of compassion of the associates. I have shopped at this store for the last 5 years and have noticed that the level of service has totally changed. The staff seems to not care about anything except when their next break will be.(Please don't ask them to get something you forgot coz they really don't want to get it for you!)
