This Safeway is near my house which is super convenient. I like how i download the Safeway app add my coupons and buy the items and wen i check out i put my phone number in and the coupons will be applied from there. I love that they have flavored water with fruits as Safeway puts it together itself. I am giving them four out of five stars as they ran out of rotisserie chicken. And I asked the person in the meat selection and they told me they ran out. such a bummer as I will try to another safeway to see if they have any..The self check out line is super easy to use and helps with the flow of the lines. I also like their selection as they usually have stuff there. As I was walking into Safeway 1197 I witnessed Gail the store assistant manager who also stated she was a supervisor physically touching an associate Demita because she was telling her how she didn't put a bin away correctly. Seeing how she physically assaulted that worker really upset me and I pray that no other employees get assaulted like this ever and let alone in the sight of customers. The pharmacy department has no compassion to their customer. Came to pick up my medication at 7:59 pm and the girl pharmacy staff named Robin told me they are close. I tried to practically beg to take me in being the last customer but to no avail. She kept on yelling they are close, She could have open one register to take me since one register is still open ringing the order of the girl before me. somehow they have this scheme of combining old rotten oranges to a bag and not even on sale. i noticed that way before in 2011 that there is always one rotten orange in every bag but this time, half of my bag are bruised and they are not from travel mishandling(and if you look closely), they are of different variety than the fresh ones. and if you talk to the manager, they point a finger to the vendor. guess what, all 10 managers/branches have the same answer. the box looks clean and very attractive to customers but the hidden garbage inside those bags are just waiting to be tossed out by people who pay good money to a once reputable store like safeway. read more

This review is for the quality of their fresh food. 2 Saturdays ago, I bought pre-cut butternut squash. The following day as I intended to prep/cook, the squash was covered with white film. The date still showed good and not expired, but the squash showed different. This past Saturday, I purchased a pack of Steak. Same thing as I went to prep it today. My go-to grocery store near my work and I really like the place. The only issue I have is whoever is in charge of the display(s) by the self-checkout needs to rethink where to place those 7 foot ++ displays. There's a designated line but some customers tend to cut and sneak towards the open registers because the people who are 'in line' CAN'T SEE over the damn displays. The designated cashier tends to be busy sometimes and walks away and can't tell those people in line that certain registers are damn open!! I'm petite and already can't see over the 5' or 6' displays. Today I went there and even the really tall people can't see over this really tall (practically a wall) display. This review is only regarding the outstanding service I received at Safeway's bakery. I called the bakery hoping to get a customized cake the same day. I spoke with Ruby and she told me they usually require a 24 hour request in advance. My husband and I really wanted to know the gender of our bundle of joy and Ruby made this happen despite the "rush order" request. She was even able to get it done within an hour of me paying for the cake. In addition to the outstanding service, her piping skills and handwriting was phenomenal! I wasn't expecting much from a Safeway bakery, but she made me into a firm believer that Safeway is more than capable of executing my vision. Great job, Ruby! Thank you so much for your service and thank you for making us a beautiful cake. I'll never forget how special you made our gender reveal experience to be. During the day, this Safeway is cool and relatively "safe", I guess. It can get a little shady after 9pm though. The last time we were there, there was a black lady fighting with one of the employees because of theft. The black woman said she didn't steal anything but the asian employee thought she did. My bf was so interested in what was going on 'cause the black lady was yelling her butt off. I believe someone called the cops but we left shortly after so we didn't know what happened. So, be careful when going at night especially if you decide to go alone. During the day is better and the lines isn't that bad (from my experience). Ps. They're selling expired food. I've been here twice this week and I have to say that this place is an absolute dump. A quarter of the shelves are barren; half of the store smelled like vinegar; they had a single register open even though the line was long; it's quite dirty; they are out of stock of many things; etc. Worst of all is that a lot of the food in the freezer section is either on the verge of expiration or straight up expired. Frozen food is *frozen* so that it lasts a long time. Both of my visits featured multiple incidents of finding expired frozen food with meat in their store. Don't go to this dump. My local Safeway that has everything I need. It's always been clean whenever I come in and the lines move efficiently. There is plenty of parking in the parking lot and many other restaurants that are within walking distance. The shelves are usually fully stocked and I never have to ask any of the staff for help in finding anything, which speaks to the organization of the store. Great Safeway! read more

This review is for the service at the Deli. Occasionally I feel like a good sandwich made with quality ingredients. Safeway makes a great sandwich featuring Boar's Head meats and a great selection of cheeses and fresh bakery-made rolls. However, overall, most of the deli employees I encounter here are downright surly. Yesterday, around 6:30 pm, I had a hankering for a sandwich. No employee was out front, but 2 were visible in the back, presumably cleaning. I waited a long time to make eye contact with one of them to no avail. Another customer arrived and asked me if anyone had acknowledged me. She had to practically scream get the attention of one of the employees. She asked if he could help us at the deli. He did not verbally respond, but did come out (seemingly reluctant) to take our orders. He was either having a bad day or hates his job or both. When he did speak, he was barely audible and never made eye contact. When I asked for lettuce on my sandwich, he said "we don't have any." Really? This is a grocery store. While I find most employees at this store to be pleasant, I have encountered more than my fair share of rude and disgruntled deli employees. I'm not sure what gives. They always come out moldy for me, 3 times this has happened and has ruined my entire day to meal prep. In the first few days of January 2020 I purchased 5 packages of Signature Select Buttery mashed potatoes because I was expecting a large number of people for dinner. They had a 'best by' date of November 12, 2020 so they were very good as to date. I bought these at the Safeway on Decoto in Union City. They were the worst tasting potatoes, fresh or packaged, frozen or fast-food that I have ever tasted in my entire life. The SKU on them was 2113050278. I was very disappointed and embarrassed to serve them. I added my own butter to them but that didn't help. I have bought better even great tasting packaged potatoes at a dollar type store. Not too long ago I witnessed an employee (big guy) walking a blind shopper with his relative down every aisle going over every item and price. It really lifted my spirits and made me smile within. His actions deserve 5 stars! Here is my problem... This morning I was shopping and so was TOM (who works there, not sure his role) was talking to every employee about their responsibilities, which is fine. However, TOM was going off on one employee stating 'you are wasting my time' and basically stating how they need to fix a display in an unkind manner. Dear TOM, not the time nor the place. Walked in exactly at 12:50am, picked up 3 items and entered the line at exactly 12:59am as the checker ( a 20-something male w/long black hair, rocker / heavy metal band member looking ) was making his final announcement the store was closing. Just as he finished relaying his message on his speakerphone I placed my 3 items on his conveyer belt to which he gave me a BLANK STARE for several seconds, as if he were annoyed / angry, before bluntly saying "We're closed now." "Excuse me?" I said. He repeated again "We're closed." I said really? You just relayed your message on the speakerphone as I was placing my items on your conveyer belt. I asked, can't I just pay for these 3 items? He quickly replied "NO. WE'RE CLOSED. I can't use my register, it has to recycle." - WHAT??? Thanks to your checker, I was forced to drive 30minutes across the bridge to a 24hr Safeway in Sunnyvale, CA. I mentioned this story to an employee at the Sunnyvale location, who said "he could've checked you out, he just chose NOT to." Enuff said. Needless to say, I will NOT be returning to this Union City Safeway again...there are better places to grocery shop ( Whole Foods, Luckys, Etc ). READ other people's reviews. I'm almost as old as this store. That's kind of scary. Anyway, as a sign indicates, this location has been serving Union City since 1974. My wife and I used to go here all the time. The store was better in the past, but not by a wide degree (the reviews are no longer up, but I gave the store 4 stars a few years ago). A few years ago, when I needed help, I had to deal with some bit-- (I asked a simple question, and she responded rudely). She no longer works here, though. My wife and I like the donuts here. We have stuffed our faces with quite a few. The éclairs here are so fu----- good. The employees at the deli work hard (my mom used to buy sandwiches here). In addition, if you buy 7 sandwiches (assuming you have a Safeway card), you'll receive a "Free Signature Cafe Sandwich!" (Gas Rewards can also be earned here.) There's a great selection of beef jerky, and some of the bags are regularly on sale (ex: $4.49 instead of $5.99). In general, though, meat prices are solid (my wife bought a package of chicken breasts for $8.48 last night). The produce department is fine. The aisles are fairly wide, and the store is always kept clean. Some good music is usually playing inside. Unless you're here late at night, expect some shoppers to get in your way (almost without fail, there's at least 1 shopper in my way when I need to buy milk). In general, the cashiers are just okay (they could be quicker). I kind of miss this guy who reminded me of David Arquette. Some other cashiers are no longer around too. Eduardo is still here, though. He's very friendly (if you're at all a regular, he may call you his "friend" whenever he sees you). Daryll is still here too (he's often at the Customer Service desk). He works hard and provides good service. The pharmacists here seem to know what they're doing. I'm not sick enough to say for sure. The self-checkout machines are easy to use. Oftentimes, though, there's one or two down. Some shoppers are also dense (the line ALWAYS begins a few yards away so that other shoppers can freely pass by). This is your average grocery store chain. Everything is ok. I do like Safeway produce and meats better than Foodmaxx, Trader Joes or Fresh & Easy but the problem are the prices are higher here. There is more produce to choose from compared to Trader Joes or Fresh & Easy. You pay for quality though. I like it better here than Lucky's as their deli section especially for lunch sandwiches are much better. Cakes are, too. Safeways also has Starbucks inside their stores. Too bad you can't use the Starbucks app though...disappointing I can't get points from there. This particular store is always busy and on holidays always runs out of food. It's centralized around many homes and other businesses. The parking is always difficult as well. I stopped here because I needed to buy my share for the office potluck tomorrow (yes, I'm here on a Working Vacation.) Since I'm traveling, my selection was something simple: chips and salsa. It was a difficult choice, as they have a larger variety of chips than I've seen in Miami. Speaking of, I have 3 words for you: Peach Hot Sauce! There's also a Starbucks in this location,3 more varieties of Chobani Greek Yogurt (raspberry flavor :), and MULTIPLE craft beers. This here tourist was impressed to find Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas, Long Board and Pipleline Porter all in a single grocery store. As others have said, the Deli is way understaffed. I'd rather go somewhere else than stand in this perpetual line. There are not enough workers to handle the customers. And it's too bad because all their made-to-order sandwiches are awesome, esp. the Chicken/artichoke. Another issue I have is, the lines that form in front of the self check-out stands are awkward and poorly designed. I have seen many arguments between customers over who is next.
