Overall an OK stop for a sale or convenience pick up but wouldn't do a big grocery haul here because of higher prices. It's a smaller sized grocery store compared to some so may have less selection. Has a fair sized parking lot. Newer self checkouts have made the lines go a bit faster. Prices are higher here but sometimes sales & coupons from the app can be good and I regularly see meat products marked down on manager discount as well (but maybe because of dates). Also has a deli counter & a raw seafood counter. read more

The deli counter service is nonexistent on Mondays. This Safeway has a Monday deal on its chicken (roasted and fried), yet never has the roasted chicken available. I've been now FOUR straight Mondays and no roasted chicken. And, every SINGLE time I ask when more will be ready, they always say 30 to 40 minutes. I literally waited the 40 minutes two weeks ago and came back to the deli and the deli staff person told me (different person than 40 minutes ago) that he just got in and it would be 30 to 40 minutes!!!! I go at 3 pm, no chicken, i go at 430, no chicken, i got at 530, no chicken. When there isn't the "deal," there's always roasted chicken, but on Mondays, there's "30 to 40 minutes." Bait and switch much?!? This time, i talked to the manager (just arrived on shift today at 530) and told her that this keeps happening. She walked away from me as I was taking to her TWICE. I asked for a rain check since this is the 4th straight time and was dismissed. They actually don't seen to care at all. And it's always the same deli staff telling me it'll be 30 to 40 minutes. They know me by now but don't seem to care about this. They have the fried chicken and the habenero chicken, just never the roasted chicken. Today was the first time that I've been to one of the smallest store from this grocery chain. I didnt need to get much for my house, and they pretty much had everything that I was looking for. I was hoping to pick-up one of their prepared Italian deli sandwiches, but they were out of those. I asked the lady who was working in the deli but she wasnt too helpful either. Instead I got one of their prepared chef salads. Since I was already in the produce section, I also picked-up a bushel of bananas, and a bag of oranges. Finally, I needed to get a gallon of reduced fat milk, and a couple of frozen Amy's Bowls frozen dinners, which should carry me through the rest of the week. I couldn't pass-up a small container of Ben & Jerrys peanut butter half baked ice cream. I finished my quick shopping without any issues. read more

Tiny old fashioned store, plenty of things though. Tons of parking and easy in easy out. Self check out lanes added, so no wait time. Deli lady Patricia is the best. Excellent chicken salad and tuna salad. Rotisserie whole chickens, $8.99 can't be beat. Delicious. No it isn't whole foods but that's ok, it's convenient, easy to park and if you use self checkout it's a breeze. Negative: I can't figure out how to get the discounts consistently. One time it's called "clip" the deal, another it's called something else. They should work on this app since getting ANY discount is helpful. read more

This is my neighborhood supermarket and we go there frequently. There are some positives and some areas to be worked on... 5 stars to the friendly and helpful staff! 2 stars for the feeling of cleanliness and hygiene 1 star for the pharmacist - not very helpful or friendly. 4 stars for pricing and quality of packaged goods. 5 stars for automated checkout My wife tells me that for meat,poultry, fish, she buys elsewhere but for some veggies and other household goods, Safeway is perfectly fine. My guess is that a bit of a facelift could elevate the feeling of this store. Other Safeway stores in DC, like the one in Georgetown, are wonderful. This store feels a bit faded... In short, we're glad you're here and part of this community. We certainly don't want to lose the supermarket for those of us who live in the neighborhood. This store feels cramped, even when it isn't crowded. The aisles are too narrow to get by another cart, especially when they are stocking shelves. The deli is in the health and beauty section. which seems odd. Small seafood counter, limited in store bakery, a lot of gardening supplies outside for lack of space inside. All the water is along the front wall, apparently they don't have enough aisles for it. You can get all the basics, it just seems claustrophobic. Closest safeway to friendship heights, 1/2 mile with quick bus or walk. Convenient to shop before or after movie at the Avalon. read more

Homeless woman took a dump in front of my son and his Father last week. They were getting booster shots at the pharmacy. Woman came in and pulled her pants down in the medicine aisle and took a dump on the floor. This may be the worst supermarket in the neighborhood. We have three lovely whole foods, two amazon fresh and a wegmans not too far. Why my husband keeps coming to this sht show of a store is beyond me. other than the parking and some nostalgia for his childhood no reason to shop here. DONT SHOP HERE!! I'm not sure what's happening with their inventory, but you'd think such a small store that's always crowded would have fresher goods. You always have to check if things are expired or close to it (especially in the deli and dairy case). Produce is lousy. And their deli is really bad - I bought 1.5 Lbs of deli meat on Thursday, by Friday morning it had that deli slime on it. And that's not the only time. The Safeway at Georgia and Piney Branch is so much nicer and has much better quality. read more

Pharmacist at this Safeway location refused to give me my booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine despite presenting information from my oncologist and my hospital stating that I am under treatment and i am to receive one. NEVER AGAIN! DO NOT SHOP HERE. It took 1 hour and 30 minutes just to PICK UP a 17 item grocery order that was preordered through their app. Order was placed and paid for through the Safeway app. The order was delayed by an hour, but indicated complete sometime later. After waiting 20 MINUTES in my car at the pickup area, I went inside to inquire. They instructed me to go back out to the car. After waiting for another 10 minutes in my car, I went back inside. The customer service lady yelled at a guy wearing a shirt that said SANITATION LEAD for not taking out my order. Sanitation lead?! Really? As if I want sanitation lead handling my fresh produce? It was painfully obvious they had not even started assembling the order yet. After the sanitation lead did not collect my order, the customer service lady turned to yell at "Joe from seafood" for a bit. I hadn't ordered any seafood. It had been OVER AN HOUR at this point of me standing inside watching the customer service lady yell at various employees. Finally I guess Joe from seafood finished scrambling together my 17 items, and he showed up outside- in his white seafood smock and all to deliver the mess. Here's what was wrong with it: 1. Instead of frozen yogurt, they gave drumsticks 2. Missing blue cheese (DID NOT REFUND) 3. Substituted ICE CREAM for BLUE CHEESE (again no refund, no indication on the app they even substituted) 4. Substituted mini water melon for a full watermelon (no substitution indicated on the app) 5. Replaced 4 lbs boneless skinless chicken breast with 2 lbs boneless skinless tenderloins (NO REFUND) 6. Substituted a $1 can of enchilada sauce for a $5 bottle (no substitution indicated on the app- no refund provided) None of the substations were indicated on the app. I was charged full price for every inferior substitution or even missing item!! I also needed some clementines that I had forgotten to include with my original order. I went back inside to grab them. The produce sign said "2.99". The self checkout was broken (of course), so I went to another lane. The clementines ring up as $5. After having braved the grocery store from hell for an hour and a half at that point, I was in no mood to argue. I overpaid for the clementines and hightailed it out of there. DO NOT SHOP HERE. They should not accept orders they are clearly woefully unable to provide. What a waste of time. Safeway owes me refunds for the missing items and inferior substations, but regretfully I'll never be able to reclaim that HOUR AND A HALF it took to pickup an order. I absolutely could have just shopped myself and left with my 17 items and they would have all been correct. Horrible experience. read more

Ordered groceries for pick up. Alerted that groceries were ready for pickup between 5pm and 8pm. Checked in and provided space number upon arrival 5:48pm and received confirmation. After 20 min waiting, clicked the "call store" button and the phone rang and rang and no answer. After 30 in of waiting, called the store directly and got customer service. Explained the situation and person answering the phone wouldn't even let me finish before they started loudly rattling off that they didn't have something or other to monitor the pickups and that I should have clicked "call store." When I said I did click call store but no one answered, they fired back that they have been by the phone all day. Really? They then asked for the name on the order and briskly said it would probably be another 20-30 min wait. I interrupted her and asked why she was being so rude. She denied being rude and said someone would bring order out right away. No apologies - nada. Almost 45 min from arrival and groceries are now in the car. Unbelievable. read more

The Chevy Chase Safeway continues to disappoint. I rarely go but was running other errands in the neighborhood so decided to give it another try. It was a horrible experience that ended with me leaving my full grocery cart and walking out. For some reason, they thought that a Friday morning would be a good time to reorganize the aisles. I couldn't even get to 4 or 5 products that I wanted because the aisles were blocked with 3 or 4 workers. Many other items were out of stock. read more

Having lived all over the country I can honestly say this is the worst Safeway I have ever been in. It made me cringe the way the cashier was talking to the customers. The cashier who helped us was so distracted by paging people on the phone and complaining to the other cashiers, I'm not sure she ever looked at me. When one customer asked for help out, someone who I think was The manager started cursing as he was throwing stuff in her bag. There is absolutely no excuse to treat your customers this way. I will never be sure why this Safeway stays open. Produce area is rife with flies, items are frequently rotten or moldy. Hard to tell sometimes, though, because the lighting in this area is downright cave-like (the rest of the store is no better). Meat area is a disaster: items look like they fell off a truck, meat dye deterioration everywhere, chicken always looks suspect. Overall, this a Safeway that either needs to close or undergo serious rehab. Broken floor tiles, cave-like lighting features throughout, low selection (with stupid high prices) - it's not worth it. read more

I understand frustration with the store at times but I want to commend staff. The occasional visit to the front desk always works out well. I see the butcher putting his time in on the floor, checking on things. I got my Covid booster there without a problem. It's a tight store serving a lot of people. This Safeway has some challenges it needs to overcome. If you shop here on a Sunday, you will regularly find the refrigerated section almost or entirely devoid of very basic items such as eggs, butter, milk, and/or soy milk. I think I remember reading on the neighborhood listserv that the store management says they do not have enough space to store items, therefore they run out of them more frequently than they would like. However, this has been a problem for years, so it seems like they're not too worried about fixing it. The produce and dried goods sections are fine, but there is often spoiled meat for sale and I don't trust the bakery section. I've bought ground beef that looked fine, only to discover when I got home that everything under the top layer is completely brown. The cakes are nasty, and I've often seen flies in the cookie/donut case. read more

Not a great grocery store, but it is only a few blocks from my apartment. This may sound dorky, but I have always wanted to live within walking distance of a grocery store. Coming from Texas, where nothing is walkable (due to the high temps and big trucks which make nobody want to step in their paths), this is super important to me. That being said, this store is small, old, and I just get the impression that the food isn't that fresh. I get my produce from Magruder's across the street (much fresher and very affordable prices) or Trader Joe's in Bethesda, but most other things I buy from here. The produce department and aisles are super narrow, and only one full-sized cart can squeeze by at a time. It's pretty annoying, because customers seem to be pretty oblivious and don't realize you're waiting for them to hurry up and go. Things seem pretty overpriced to me, but I'm generally willing to pay the price for convenience. The store doesn't really get particularly crowded, though you may have to wait a few extra seconds for some slow-moving elderly folks. I wouldn't go here to meet potential mates, unless you're into 80-year-olds. read more

So I shop here rarely - and only because it's a 3 minute walk from my place. But there are a few key problems here: 1. Everything is really overpriced. Take the 10 minutes and walk to Friendship Heights Giant and you can get the same products for 20% less. Some of the prices are comparable to Whole Foods even though nothing at Safeway comes close to Whole Foods quality. 2. The produce is half-near dead. 3. I have never, ever, ever made it out of this store in under 20 minutes - and mind you, I usually only buy 1 or 2 items. The checkout system is beyond broken. The last time I went, there were signs that said "please have patience, we have new computer systems." There were customers who looked like they had been standing in line for days. I appreciate having a local store, but it's so frustrating that I rarely go there. read more

If you forget your Safeway card, or can't remember the phone number from where you lived a million years ago that goes along with it, the lovely checkout staff will cut you a break and give you a discount. 3. A product was listed on the website as being available at this store location, but I could not find it on the shelf. The customer service representative was unhelpful. Despite saying I had looked, she suggested that I go look for it and did not offer to help. I asked if it could be looked up in store inventory in the computer system and was told that the store does not have this type of system. Haven't been to Gtwn Safeway in over 2 years. Now i know why. All show, no substance. Only one brand of prosciutto. No dairy free anything. And none of my dad's fave chocolate brownie crunch cookies. And the florentine cookies I bought are so stale, they're inedible (and no sell by date anywhere on the package. They have to be almost a year old to taste this stale). Welcome to the world's first Safeway. Built completely out of logs and mud, it is the first free-standing structure in the city. Okay, that's hyperbole. The place isn't that old, but it just feels so cramped compared to the ones in Georgetown and Bethesda. They have enough to suit your needs, but I find myself getting stuck in the produce section whenever I take my daughter's stroller in there. Some parts aren't wide enough for a stroller and a cart to go down at the same time. The meat section is okay, I suppose. I find the prices to be a lot cheaper, and the selection a bit larger at Giant. I also get my produce from Magruder's across the street because it's cheaper. To be honest, I would suggest this place if you're going for deals in the circular. You can find a lot of great deals that way. Outside of that, it's a bit cheaper and easier to find what you're looking for at either Giant (Connecticut Ave or Western Ave) or Wholefoods, believe it or not. And I can't tell you how many times I've put all my stuff back because the line was just too ridiculous. read more

In terms of atmosphere it's a bit dark in typical Safeway fashion as well as feeling crammed and run down. It's no surprise this place gets such low ratings. As much as I can appreciate the free parking lot and cashiers who seem to know all the locals this place flat out sucks. First off, its the smallest Safeway I have ever seen. I had a small list of items I needed a few weeks ago and wasn't able to find some of them. However, I found them in a CVS. Talk about ridiculous. Also, they need to open more lanes here. It seems the cashiers have been here for years as they know every customer for the most part and want to BS with them. This place has no self checkout which sucks and the store is always full of senior citizens so you're going to be in line for a long time as they whip out their coupons, Safeway card, change, etc. I avoid this place like the plague even though I can walk to it. I opt to shop near where I work in Bethesda. If you're desperate this place may suffice for your needs. I would never shop here as a regular customer though. read more

I come here every week because it's right down the street, but this safeway kinda sucks. Really tight aisles full of stupid customers blocking everything (I know it's not their fault their customers are stupid but it really annoys me.) Additionally, the aisles are always full of employees unloading boxes strewn all over the place on weekends. I don't know why they don't restock early in the morning or late at night, but they don't. Customer service is usually meh. Additionally, because it's such a small store, you often don't find what you're looking for. But it's clean and the produce is good quality. I think it's cheaper than Giant but maybe that's just me. read more

After years of shopping at super markets from coast to coast, I think I might have found the worst of the bunch. The location is convenient, on Connecticut in lower Chevy Chase, and rare for a store in this area, has a nice parking lot. Unfortunately, the produce is beyond horrendous. So many spoiled pieces of fruit. Even worse, I was picking through yogurts, and no joke, at least two out of three were beyond their expiration dates. One I found was more than 2 months gone. That is ridiculous. The quality care is clearly absent here. The Giant down the street rarely has a single yogurt within a month of the expiration date, and it is chock full of fresh, delicious produce of all kinds. Frankly, I am afraid to try the meat here. What's odd, I have been to plenty of other Safeways and never seen anything like what is going on here. For whatever reason, this one locations has just fallen apart. I've lived in Washington, D.C. since 1982, and of all the Safeways and Giants and other grocery stores I've patronized, this Safeway is the worst. The store never continues to disappoint. For example, yesterday I had requested customer service because produce that had been tagged as on sale wasn't when I checked out. I asked for help to void the items. Instead, I got an impatient clerk who was dismissive that I didn't know the steps to void an item, and she spoke in a muffled voice, granted she was wearing a mask, but she could have slowed down her words. Instead of helping me, she tossed back her mid-back dreadlocks and walked away in defiance that I not only couldn't understand what she was saying but also failed to have to steps nailed to void an item. I don't need that kind of stress in a grocery store. Moreover, the produce is almost always limpy, prices are at least $1 more on items, and the clerks or whatever their titles are watch over you like a hawk in self-checkout. After yesterday's experience, I will no longer -- ever -- patronize the Safeway on Connecticut Ave. near Chevy Chase Circle. There are other choices -- use them. read more
