I used to go to this Safeway because it was the closest grocery store to my apt. That was before Harris Teeter moved in on Pennsylvania ave. I am not a fan of this Safeway. The selection is standard but nothing exciting. The good thing about this grocery store is that they have a full liqour store (not just beer and wine but hard liqour). It is seperate from the store and use must pay for your alchool seperately. Also it has some funky hours. This store also has self-checkout. If you like that. Other than that, I don't have any other good things to say about this store. Once Harris Teeter moved in down the street, I drive three or four more blocks past Safeway to go into the Harris Teeter garage parking lot. I don't ever thing about messing around in this Safeway anymore. read more

I am a fan of Safeway for a few reasons: 1) their prices are consistently lowest 2) the staff is friendly and helpful 3) they have a good selection of produce and 4) the selection of shelf items is excellent and 5) they stayed in the neighborhood when other stores closed shop and left for the suburbs. In order to have the best shopping experience, I usually go in the mornings as early as possible. For example, produce gets picked over during the day, and when I have to shop after work, I find that stuff can have that leftover look. Or at night sometimes they'll be out of the specific kind of milk I want. But I look on that as positive - at least I know that the food I buy isn't sitting on the shelves for long. Morning shopping also avoids the long lines that others complain about. I find that the Safeway staff here is very helpful and mostly friendly or at least polite. read more

This Safeway knowingly, intentionally, and routinely sells expired food, including meat past the "use by" date. They don't remove items when notified by customers (because honestly, it wasn't an oversight to begin with) and they discount the items for faster sale. It's unethical and possibly against code. If you must shop here be sure to check all the dates on everything. This store might as well be a food bank. Lack of customer service and security are among the stores many issues. read more

I come here pretty frequently and haven't had an issue. The lines can be long at times but I can come during the day so maybe that's why it hasn't been too bad. I've found their selection to be pretty good, the produce fresh, and the store overall is very clean. I also like that they have some pretty decent organic options at good prices. They are definitely a little less expensive than Harris Teeter which is a bonus. I appreciate the checkers and have had some great conversations with them. They are always friendly and usually pretty happy! I will continue to come back here because of its convenient location, reasonable prices, and friendly staff. read more

Safeway seems to be improving. I think Harris Teeter put actually going out of business in view. I've noticed that it's constantly crawling with managers now and most of the clerks have much less attitude. I do like the Just 4 You deals. I didn't want to admit it...but I'll give them their due. Also there was recently an incident where my mom forgot to redeem her 10$ shopping reward in time...to my complete surprise they honored her coupon after it had expired. Well what's next? Maybe some real customer appreciation. I have begun to go back to Safeway more as it's only 2 blocks from our house and I'm feeling less angst and anxiety each time. Some time soon they may even win my trust back. We're getting better...together :) read more

A holdover from another time--when no one living in SE had a choice of where to shop for groceries. Safeway used to have the monopoly and ran the store accordingly. With the arrival of places like Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's, this Safeway store briefly up'ed its game. But that didn't last long. Long lines, over the hill produce, and general uncleanliness. Bad service. Go to another pharmacy. Was on hold the phone several times. After the long wait I was told my prescription was ready for pick up, only to find out it wasn't after I arrived at the pharmacy. I followed up the next day and the lady who answered the phone didn't have customer service skills. Didn't say good morning, was talking to another person while on the phone with me, clearly not present nor willing to help. I hope this pharmacy would hire based on skills, especially customer service skills. The last thing you want to see when you are not feeling well is yet another inattentive person at the safeway pharmacy. read more

I do not think I will ever understand how a grocery store in 2016 does not have AT LEAST ONE brand of organic chicken.

Same story here - DO NOT use thier delivery service - no matter how desperate you are. They will not show up when promised and if and when they do you will not get most of what you ordered - BUT - they will give you a $10 credit on your next order. Trust me - I've tried a few times and it is not worth it. And, to top it all off - our LAST order (read very last) had mouse droppings and a mouse INSIDE the loaf of bread. Seriously. Now that SunTrust has gone, I absolutely hate coming here. In addition to the low quality produce, the service is consistently deplorable. There are seldom more than two lanes open and the ones that are are ridiculously slow because so many customers are in them. Self-checkout is a torture chamber. Meanwhile, you see employees milling about at closed lines or hanging out around Starbucks or the customer service counter. I have no idea why this store insists on hiring people who clearly do not want to work there. The older cashiers are generally nice and polite, but most cashiers under 25 I've encountered has been sullen, if not flat out rude. There are a few friendly younger cashiers (including the Starbucks crew) but they are the exception. On several occasions, I have had to speak to them first in order to be spoken to and have been handed a receipt without a "thank you" or a "goodbye." The last time I went (which will be the last time I go to this store), I waited in line for a good 7 minutes with no cashier at the register at all. She'd simply left and while 2-3 people (including someone who appeared to be a manager) walked by, no one offered a word of apology or explanation. When it was finally MY turn to be waited on (pun intended), I didn't say hello first, just to see what would happen. ALL the cashier said was "Do you want a bag?" That's IT. SERIOUSLY?? I REALLY hope a manager or someone from corporate reads this and all of the other terrible reviews. It will let them know why everyone is leaving this store to go to Harris-Teeter or Navy Yard to shop. read more

Is the 14th St. Safeway on Capitol Hill closing? I was there on Sunday and the shelves were decimated. Why, if it is closing, haven't they let people know? When is it to be shut down officially? Man, it breaks my heart to say it as I defend Safeway's prices as being the best around, but wow. The standards in this store are so incredibly poor. As other posters have attested, their produce is a joke. I need limes for a recipe only to be told "we got no limes". How is that possible? Also, over a holiday weekend, clearly had not been restocked at all as there was one bottle of milk left on the entire shelf. And yeah, the workers truly don't give a crap. Some are very nice, but most are flat out rude, milling about and not making themselves available to assist customers. Also--why do they close all self checkout at 9? So then they are usually down to one or two open aisles with super long lines. read more

Just moved to the neighborhood and discovered that the Unsafeway was my local. So far so good! Have not experienced the grim lines everybody else mentioned - even late afternoon on Saturdays when stores are usually packed. Service is good. Nice and clean, great selection. The wine and beer shop off to the side is convenient and well stocked. read more

These 5 stars are in defense of Safeway, because I just love it, and I'm sad that people are calling it Unsafeway, although I think that's pretty hilarious. Too bad we don't have a Social Safeway in this part of town... The prices are a little cheaper than Harris Teeter, and I really like their produce section. Twice I've been in here to drop a presentation off for my husband and the same person (Tracy) has been INCREDIBLY RUDE to me both times. The first time she was also rude to the Dr.'s office when she called to confirm the prescription. The second time she told me the Dr. wrote the prescription incorrectly and proceeded to lecture ME about it, as if it were my fault. I told her I wanted my prescription back and that I was going elsewhere. I'll never take another prescription there again - talk about a lack of bedside manor. read more

The renovation was nice, but this store has really gone downhill in the past few years in terms of service. It's really convenient for me, the food is the same as most other chains around town, and I can forgive the lack of stock in the evenings because they are really busy. However, I've had so many bad experiences with bad-attitude cashiers over the last year I can't shop at this Safeway any more. It's worth the extra few bucks to go another three blocks to the Teeter (where parking is easier anyway) or even to Virginia (where the groceries are bigger and easier to navigate) in order not to be insulted by the people taking my business. Slowest. Checkouts. Ever. I write this as I stand in a monstrously long checkout line. One which rarely moves. I may have to eat the contents of my cart. I shop at this store at least once a week. It is a frustrating experience almost every time. The lines are almost always long, the staff "give-a-damn" factor is almost always low, and the veracity of advertised specials is commonly suspect (i.e. a two for $5 special may not actually ring up as such). The two stars is because it does maintain regular stocks of items, everyone needs food, and they hire special needs folks from the community. Although I suspect the latter is a result of sound company policy and not any particular stroke of genius on the part of management, who seem to be largely absent from this store. read more

Tonight was the first time that I have used the pharmacy at this Safeway (although my fiance uses it regularly) and I left very happy. I don't write many reviews, but the pharmacist, Michael, was so helpful and kind that I wanted to share my experience. We have had a very difficult night/day with our dog which led to him being prescribed a new medication that would have cost over $200. Michael helped me figure out a way to get the cost down and was extremely patient and friendly. I appreciate his kindness, and it put a little light in my otherwise sad day. I would definitely use this pharmacy in the future. read more

This place is a nightmare. It is always overcrowded beyond belief...10 people deep lines if you go after work. Be prepared! Organic food often of low quality with mold forming, etc. They are doing a decent job of getting more organic products in stock which is a good start, but a long way to go! First the good. - Cheap - It's cheaper than Harris Teeter, and sometimes much cheaper. That's a good thing. - Starbucks plus liquor store plus renovation Now the bad. - Slow lines - Even on a Sunday, there were just 2 lines staffed and lines for each. Don't you know that people tend to shop on the weekends? - Sometimes surly staff - Some staff are friendly and helpful, but some are decidedly rude and indifferent. - Limited selection / sometimes low quality produce. Finally the ugly. - Don't count on them having what you want - They have not had skim milk, ground turkey, or the right beans during past visits. Not having milk? Is this rural Russia? - I used to tell my wife that there was guaranteed to be something that would annoy me about any trip to that Safeway but I still go back because it's cheap. read more

Ghetto!! Wow, I've always considered Safeway a decent grocery store until I came to this one.

Unsafeway needs to give up on this location and bulldoze it. Do not go here unless you do not value your time or are on foodstamps. Here's why: 1. Staff is lazy, slow, incompetent and with a bad attitude to boot; 2. Safeway has decided to understaff the checkout lanes so there is only one ever active. Last night, my wait was 30 minutes. The checkout lady was gabbing with the people ahead of me instead of checking their groceries. And she was a slow bagger anyway. Another cashier actually told her to take it easy and not hurry. And she let a friend cut in front of me after I had already been waiting 20 minutes... Irate; 3. Selection is poor. Only the staples here; 4. Time before last, a melee with 10+ people broke out and eventually spilled into the parking lot. I'm actually counting this as a plus for the store -- it was pretty exciting; 5. Bags are cheap as hell and rip if they have any cans or bottles in them; 6. Etc., etc., etc. This clearly is a location where Safeway is investing the minimum in staff because they don't think the neighborhood population will pay a little extra for competence or service. Maybe they're right -- hence don't come here if you value your time and are not on food stamps. read more

Was looking confused in the flower section for about 3 seconds before I had about 5 people come over and help me. Using a picture on my phone of some dead flowers they went out of their way to identify the flower (asiatic lily) and a few friendly jibes about "being in trouble" later I was on my way with just what I was looking for. Love the Floral department. Cassandra creates the best balloon bouquets, although it's a day in advance notice, the customer service is great. Loads of food selection, and odd favors and fruits galore!! Happy this is my neighborhood Safeway, will always come here. read more

The customer service here is the worst I've ever experienced at a grocery store chain. On the way out of the store, the plastic bag that I had purchased for a nickel broke open, leaving me unable to walk home with the enclosed produce. I walked back in and asked the employee manning the self-checkout for a replacement. "You have to pay for it," she responded. Thinking she was joking, I explained that the bag had just broke open after being packed by the checker. "I didn't see that," she said, and if it "wasn't ripped at the checkstand," we don't have to have to give you another one. Seeing the aggravation on my face, she picked up the phone -- it was unclear whether she was calling security or a supervisor. She apparently had phoned my checker and asked if he had given me a ripped bag. Perhaps the only reasonable and competent employee in this store, Traviz simply told her to give me a replacement bag and stop demanding a nickel, because "it's the law." (I fully support the bag tax, but this kind of inflexibility after the store overbags your items is ridiculous). Earlier, after buying wine at the separated but attached liquor section, I was accosted by a security guard for daring to place the naked bottle in my cart with the rest of my shopping. I replied that the checked hadn't even offered me a bag, and we went to ask her for one. Instead of offering a bag, she curtly replied "don't you have your own bag?" I suppose she might have noticed the cloth bag at the bottom of my cart, but this whole episode was out of proportion -- you'd think I had opened the bottle and begun imbibing there in the store. read more

The reviews posted do reflect the store character. The store seems to be understaffed but all in all it is a good store. Has a liquor store & starbucks. They're merchandise ls pretty good compared to the safeway by benning rd. All i say is maybe they should stock up more around the first of the month bc the food seems to fly off the selves! read more

1) Unless it a Wednesday at 11am you can assume that you will wait in line long enough for your ice cream to melt. 2) The cashiers are very hit or miss, especially in the liquor section. One day you'll get service with a smile the next you'll have to wait because the cashier is slacking off, not even in the section and bothered to help you. 3) Hopefully you won't have to go the bakery or deli counter after work because if it closes at 7pm people won't help you after 6:30. 4) The reliability of finding specific items is near Trader Joe's levels. One week there will be only italian sausage the next only brats. They won't restock razor blades for months at a time. 5) Carefully check the dates. I've found things on the shelves weeks past the sell by date. read more

Lines are horribly long. I've had the staff help me while talking on their cell phone. I have been charged twice for an item, brought my receipt back to the store, and been told it was my mistake not theirs. Best thing about them is their beer/wine prices are pretty low for the area. read more

Mind-blowingly understaffed during peak times as well as totally random off times. It doesn't really matter what time of day it is- you will probably end up waiting behind someone buying a week's worth of groceries just to get your pint of Halo Top. I switch my allegiance from this Safeway to Harris Teeter a few years ago. However, every once and a while, I forget and return to Safeway on 14th Street SE. Good thing that this Safeway never fails to remind me that it's a crappy place. The staff is rude. Most of the clientele is ruder. The place is filthy and understaffed. The lines are long. The aisles are full of boxes and things. There never is enough baskets or carts. It's sad, because most other Safeways are great. As an alternative to Harris Teeter, I go to the Safeway in Southwest, which is great. My recommendation to the Safeway corporate headquarters: shut the southeast store down, fire the staff and start over again. read more

Its my last time shopping here until they get the management under control. Under a fresh layer of snow peas was serious mold. The numbers on the produce aren't valid in the computer system. The broccoli barely looked edible. The self checkout lines constantly go down, there are never enough registers open. Safeway's lack of a system for a self checkout line leads to so much confusion. I've tried going at several times of the day, and can never get through the line in a reasonable amount of time. I also absolutely hate having to walk through the parking lot, having to avoid drivers that never look when they back up. I hope in the future this Safeway gets torn down and gets rebuild mixed use. Good thing Harris Teeter and Eastern Market are a close alternative. read more

This pharmacy has consistently been terrible. I've never experienced anything like it. They are extremely slow to fill the scripts, they get them wrong, they don't pick up their phones, and worst of all: they say the script will be ready in 20 minutes, and when you come back in half an hour, they still haven't filled them. I think they don't know how to prioritize their work. I would like to find a pharmacy that's actually decent around here. Back in Silver Spring, both the Rite Aid Aid and CVS were great. read more

I come to this Safeway often because of its proximity to my home, and it's competitive prices (including great gas discounts). But every time I go, I regret the experience. Their standard for customer safety is criminal. A 1/2 gallon of milk expires in 2 days. Chicken is way past it's "sell by" date. Ground beef and turkey are either near their expiration date, or drowning in their own meat juices. The fish section smells awful (no excuse considering Baltimore is a 40 min drive). In addition to their terrible selection in edible food, the delivery service and the stores don't talk to each other. The one time I try Safeway delivery, my order never made it to the delivery truck. Customer Service claimed that they put a $20 credit on my Safeway Card, but my next Safeway purchase had no discount of any kind. I still haven't gotten a refund for the purchase that never ended up on the truck. With the myriad options around the DC area, I have decided to take my business elsewhere. read more
