I don't know why, but this place reminded me of your sitcom, corner store, supermarket. It was so welcoming when I came in here and had the shelves stocked with items. Honestly, this was one of the best supermarkets I have been in for a while. One down side here is that it is located in a rather cramped space. The aisles are narrow and if you a claustrophobic, this might not be the spot for you. Even though it is a smaller space, they do have a wide variety of items to choose from. It was a nice experience and it was great to see that this is used by so many people. I only stopped in here one night to grab a few things and there were enough people in here to make it known it is a great asset in the area. The guy scanned 4 items twice. When i confronted him, he started screaming saying I was distracting him. How do you scan only 4 big items twice and not the small ones if you're distracted. Then he told me i was annoying because i complained about the rotten meat. He mumbled so many insults trying to give me a refund for those items. Small selection of meat and produce which you should probably avoid anyway (50% of beef was browning and 50% of produce wilting/ bruised), this appears to be a small supermarket where a lot of local employees come for a quick sandwich... and perhaps a par of pliers should you need one. Good selection of snacks and drinks at full retail prices, so dont expect a sale of any kind. The small amount chicken in my caesar salad tasted like overnight jerk chicken. Strange. read more

This little "supermarket" is a fully stocked convenience store plus. They really do have everything you'd be looking for, from any sort of grocery item to duct tape or dog poop bags. These items are all a bit expensive, and this review is primarily for the deli! I LOVE Cap Hill Supermarket's deli counter. The deli meat and cheese is always fresh and they have a huge variety of sandwich options. They are made to order so you can choose one from the dozens listed on the menu, or create your own by choosing a type of bread/bagel, meat, cheese, veggies, and condiments. You can't go wrong. I only stop by when I am craving one of their deli sandwiches, and sometimes leave with a random household or grocery item that I need urgently. Otherwise, due to the prices, I stick to the deli sandwiches. But it is nice to have everything else at arm's reach in case you want to multitask with errands. read more

A nice family-run neighborhood grocery between Union Station and the bulk of Capitol Hill's residential streets. The reason it gets four stars is convenience, and, contrary to what other reviewers have said, the Asian family that runs the place has always been very friendly to me. As other reviewers have said, it's EXPENSIVE. You are paying for convenience. For example, a box of Cheezits can cost over $5! However, there are times you don't want to go all the way down to Trader Joe's or up to Giant/Whole Foods or, God forbid, west to the Walmart. Given that I walk most every day, it's much more convenient to swing in here on the way home, or walk back up from the house to get some milk. I grew up in the rural South where the nearest true chain supermarket was at least a 20 minute drive away, so I'm accustomed to this sort of mom-and-pop pricing. In my sleepy community we had a Piggly Wiggly and another grocery/hardware store down the street (no kidding, Campbell's Soup right across from the nails and screws!) and the only folks who would go SHOPPING shopping there were those for whom Uncle Sam was picking up the tab. Sure it costs more, but if you just need some sugar, bananas, a bag of chips, a vegetable or two, it sure beat that long drive with the extra gas and time. Same thing goes here. Capitol Hill Supermarket has pretty much everything you need and even some specialty items like Wickle Pickles (the pride of Tallapoosa County, Alabama) and Redbone Hot Sauce (the pride of DC?). They have basic produce, all your processed boxed foods, dairy, a frozen section, and even some meats. When I was first moved here I figured this was going to be a glorified 7-11, but in fact it's truly a neighborhood mini-grocery. As others have said, they have a deli here, but I have yet to try it. Bottom-line: This is a great stop for locals who don't mind paying a little extra on an item or two to save half and hour. That said, if I see you in here with a cart loaded down I'm finally going to understand how rich folks figure out how to spend all that money. read more

I shopped here before I knew there was a Walmart a few blocks away from our hotel. This was on recommendation of a worker at the Capitol tour. There are prices missing on many of the items so you have to ask. We only got a few essentials like milk and ceral, some grapes, and some plastic bowls, a two liter of soda, and some chips. My friends and I refer to the Capitol Hill Supermarket as our local "Target" because, I swear to god, you can find anything you need here. Mind you, they will only have one of said item, but they'll have it nonetheless! And of course, their prices can't even come close to the delightful cheapness that is an actual Target, but when you're in a pinch, it does the trick. I've worked down the block from this market long enough to have seen it go through several much appreciated upgrades. They changed the layout a while ago to ease congestion at the door and allow speedier checkout (which is definitely one of the speediest around). They also have not always had Boar's Head in their deli, so it does feel like their quality is improving over time. I have to dock points, however, for their staff not being the most helpful in finding items (they are willing to help, they just don't know where to look) and for their wine prices being so outrageous. I know they are right across the street from Schneider's where prices are twice as much, but Schneider's only sells about two bottles of wine that are $10 quality, and at this market the selection is all labels you could find elsewhere for $5-$12, but marked at Schneider's-like prices. read more

I am basing the rating entirely on the deli (it is superior to anything around, including Subway, Bagels and Baguettes, Cafe Bliss, Georgetown Market) The sandwiches are always fresh, they have a very wide variety and do not skimp on the meat, avocado, etc. The soups are pretty good as well. Two problems: one major, one is what it is. Major problem: they flagrantly violate the DC bag tax law. They asked me if I want a bag AFTER they have already checked me out. I didn't need a bag, but I watched them double bag (for no good reason) several people in front of me w/o asking or charging them the tax. Now, they have the notice of the bag tax posted RIGHT NEXT TO the checkout area. So they know what they're supposed to be doing. They just aren't doing it. Other: they were pretty expensive. This place really knows how to utilize their space. It's not a big place by any means, but they have a surprisingly large amount of grocery items. In addition to the standard convenience store boxed goods and sundries, they have a pretty good selection of produce and meat. My roommates who don't really cook are able to rely on this place for all their shopping. They even have dog food! They also have really good made to order sandwiches. They will always charge you for a bag. And everything is very expensive. But they have a good mix of basic necessities - like milk, cream cheese, fruit, etc - and some more obscure but no less important items like nutella, and pickles of all sorts. This place has everything I need! However sometime it is very pricey. I get it though, it's a smaller grocery so they have higher overall costs, but the staff is really helpful and friendly and they generally have cheaper wine. They have fresh bagels and cream cheese and make several kinds of delicious sandwiches to order (they use boars head products). Self serve fresh coffee is available. For a neighborhood grocery store, Capitol Hill Supermarket ("CHS") is one of your better options around Capitol Hill. It's not quite a "supermarket" per se but it's certainly an upgrade from the average convenience store. What helps CHS stand out among the competition (and there are many peppered across the neighborhood) is simply the size of the store. Its selection of produce, pantry items, frozen food, and even packaged meat are twice that of anything within a 10 block radius. The quality and freshness rarely disappoint me. I remember walking around once and seeing a lonely package of chicken breast but found 4 more packages after circling around the aisles just once. That particular experience told me two things about CHS: first, they try to cycle in fresh products and, two, the meat probably wasn't frozen. Of course, you couldn't - and shouldn't - rely on CHS as your primary grocery store. CHS could never replace real supermarkets like Safeway or Giant because there's no doubt that a premium on CHS convenience. For instance, a pint of regular ice cream costs $5.99 at CHS when a comparable pint at Safeway costs $3.99. Most canned goods and frozen food items are least $1 or $2 more as well. It all adds up if you're doing your weekly grocery list. But when you're in a bind and need just a few staple items (like a few carrots or a small onion), then Capitol Hill Supermarket is always a safe bet. 4 Stars when compared against nearby grocery stores. This review is based on my experiences with the deli side. For breakfast, I usually get an egg and cheese on a bagel or a buttered bagel. They say they sell NY-style egg sandwiches. It is close, but it's just not quite there. Frankly, I was a little disappointed. As for their lunch, I've had their salads and their sandwiches. Their "subs" are pretty small for the price. The chef salad was good. Their Chicken Parm sub was mediocre. having worked in the capitol hill area for the past four years, i've known that capitol hill supermarket has been on that corner the whole time and never really thought about walking in. but i'm glad that some of my fellow hill staffers brought me over to enjoy a sandwich from their market deli. while waiting for my pastrami panini, i did take a quick glance around the market...which really seemed more of an awesome convenience store than a supermarket. but it is large and there is a robust selection of random items. but back to the point of my trip...lunch. the sandwich was solid. pastrami was nicely cured and the mustard was stone ground, everything i love about a good deli sandwich. now that i've tried it, this little deli is now very much a viable off-campus lunch option. read more

Great neighborhood convenience store. As other reviewers have said, the selection is really great; I constantly find myself surprised by products I find there. My only complaints are the prices, which are higher than the supermarket, but you're paying a price for convenience, and the salads they make at the deli there. These people are WAY overpriced! Why pay twice as much (yes, twice) for everything when I can bike 15 minutes out of my way to Giant? Oh and they had the nerve to cheat me out of $2 on a sandwich clearly labeled $3.99 because they decided the 3 was actually a 5. Here you'll pay $7 for a small plastic container of spinach, $5 for a can of soup, and another $5 for a freaking ready-to-eat noodle bowl. The deli sandwiches are fresh and fairly priced. There are several vegetarian options that are well composed. Breakfast sandwiches are made microwaving eggs, but are not terrible. The selection in the grocery department is excellent. You get a feeling that they have everything you could want: Wine, beer, good cheese selection, decent frozen meal selection. However, I am subtracting 2 stars for the grocery prices. I understand this place is a small market and while I don't know the wholesale price breakdown, I can't imagine that with their current prices, they are moving any decent amount of groceries. I have on numerous occasions wanted to go shopping before going home (I work in a building nearby and walk to Union Station for my commute). But once I look at the $1 to $1.50 "surcharge" I don't buy a thing. It's just too much. I'm not asking for bargain prices, but just something reasonable. I think that the market will quickly find that it is able to make money on volume (people actually buying items), if they reduce their prices by a bit. read more

Very conveniently located if you live over by Union Station. Not a wide variety of groceries but has the essentials. It is open until 10 PM Monday-Saturday and closes at 8 PM on Sundays. The prices are significantly higher here than at Giant but that is the price you pay for convenience. I recommend their deli sandwiches which you can find in the cheese section for around $7 each. Also, if you are into avocados like I am, you will never fail to find a ripe one here.. but for the price of $3! read more

I used to call this the "Opportunistic Grocery Store." It was the only grocery store within a quick walking distance from my house, and they must have known it because everything cost $0.50 to $1.00 more than in the supermarket. I get that it is a small business, their costs are higher, and they have to make ends meet. And you know, I can recall several times when I was in the kitchen in full swing and then, "Baking fail!
