    SIDE OF BUTTERNUT SQUASH
    Crystal N.

Butternut squash was delicious. The lamb shank was so soft and tender, and the juices mixed in with the rice added a lot of flavor. I split this meal with a friend and we were stuffed. The lamb kabob was kinda dry and the bread was okay. Not the stars of the show. Service was okay. We were there during a live music performance so we requested a table far away so we could talk. Music was good though and it seemed like a mix of employees and patrons were dancing?

This place was absolutely amazing! The food was delicious, fresh, and perfectly prepared. The service was excellent--everyone was friendly, attentive, and welcoming. The atmosphere was also very nice and comfortable. Everything from the food to the service exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be coming back again!

Another solid meal from a great restaurant in the heart of Oakland. The chicken kabab and beef kabab are my favorite meals! The rice is soft and delicious, and be sure to ask for the various sauces. The staff was friendly and there are plenty of tables but it's good to have a reservation.

This was my first time ever eating at this restaurant and from once a separate told us we got there just in time. We had ourselves an early dinner around 3 PM and he said the restaurant had just cleared out. Apparently they were packed for lunch!! I've never had a style of food before so I asked my boyfriend what I should order since he likes the style. He actually ordered me a chicken curry dish and himself another meat dish, but I can't remember what it was called. Both items as well as appetizer it was delicious! I should've taken a picture of the items we ordered for the appetizer since it was a three portion combo plate, but the pictures are below! Ambience was very relaxed and I really like how there was a half steps down into a little patio area so it seemed like you were almost underground, but you could see out. It was cute watching people walk their dogs and families ride their bike bikes. I will definitely want to come back here and get and buy more dishes!

Such a wonderful dinner experience! Everything we ordered was delicious--the mantu, mezze platter, kabobs, milk pudding, and pistachio ice cream with baklava were all outstanding. So much flavor, fresh ingredients, and beautifully prepared dishes. The staff were also fantastic--friendly, attentive, and welcoming. We'll definitely be back!

Authentic Afghan restaurant with great variety of cuisines. Full bar with bar seating, high tables, indoor and odor seating and space for private party. Service was quick and responsive. Foods were delicious and fresh. Combination plate has all sort of kababs with delicious ghabele polo (seasoned rice). Good for groups, couples, date night, meetup and kids. Accessible with ramp, paid and free street parking available.

We originally planned on takeout from Saffron, but the aroma when we walked in to pick up our food convinced us to eat there instead. The staff was accommodating, setting us up with a table and water service despite our last-minute switch. I eat a lot of Middle Eastern food and their lamb shank ranks among the best I've had. The sauce had incredible depth and whatever they cooked the lamb in penetrated the meat perfectly. Unlike other places that overcook lamb shank until it's dry and stringy, this was succulent - clearly they know how to properly cook it rather than just boiling it to submission. The rice was well-seasoned, and the lamb kabob was juicy, tender, and perfectly spiced. The firnee dessert was far too sweet for our liking. The service was excellent - even though we'd originally ordered takeout, they treated us like regular dine-in customers and kept our waters full. This was meant to be just one stop on our East Bay food crawl I took my cousin on and we intended to taste a few bites and take the rest home, but the food was so good we couldn't help finishing everything there. Will definitely return!

I don't have Afghan food very often, it's not super common to find. Love that Oakland has this spot! Parking was pretty difficult to find so we parked a few blocks away. We came here for my brother's birthday, from what we saw, there was a main restaurant and then a separate smaller room next door with additional seating. We were seated in the smaller room, which was nice and more intimate. We order the mantu, eggplant pakora, and aushak for appetizers. Everything was so well seasoned and delicious. The eggplant pakora was my personal favorite. My dad ordered the salmon kara'e. We all split the kobideh kebab and shola. Servings were incredibly generous. Atmosphere was nice, service was good. They seemed pretty busy on this day so it was a little slow but didn't make the experience any less pleasant. Absolutely lovely meal and I would come back! Thank you for the hospitality and delicious food!

Went for an early birthday dinner on a weekday and we were sat right away. Service was quick and they had great recommendations. Drinks (both amazing flavors, comes in a full tea pot so can share with the table) 10/10 Turkish black tea 10/10 saffron cardamom green tea Appetizer 8/10 Potato bolani - great flavor, sauces tasted very good with it 9/10 Mantu - perfectly seasoned and cooked! Loved the sauce on the dumplings Main -9/10 Lamb Kabob- flavor of the char was very nice, vegetables were cooked perfectly, rice paired well. The sauces in the table also complemented the meal well -8/10 Lamb Shank - full of delicious flavors, rice was amazing

Such an amazing meal with amazing company. Starting off with Mantu app: steamed dumplings. They were so delicious we ordered another plate! A few other entrees and finished with baklava of course. Service was great and the outside seating was lovely on a warm evening

Came here for Oakland Resturaunt Week for 4 course tasting in March and honestly the atmosphere alone made me want to stay longer. The service stood out because Jesse was friendly and attentive. 1st Course- Champagne 2nd Course - Potato Pakora 3rd Course - Salmon Kebab w/ Rice and Vegetables 4th Course - Ferni The space felt calm with lots of natural lighting and beautiful plants. Overall, I'd come back for the potato pakora, which is crispy and savory. Perfect for solo date or catch up with friends!

We first visited Saffron Kitchen, shortly after they open their restaurant, about two years ago. We were walking on College Avenue and the aromas from their kitchen was so tantalizing that we walked in and had a fabulous lunch. As we were leaving , we met Akbar, the owner and told him that as residents of New York City we were really impressed by his fabulous menu. We returned a few more times and had many fantastic dinners but had not returned until this evening ( two years later). When we walked into Saffron kitchen with a 7pm reservation, Akbar greeted us by our names with big hugs! I was astonished that he not only remembered us but was very touched that he recalled our names! He even remembered some of our children as well as our grandson. However, most importantly, his appetizers and entrees were even more delicious than we imagined possible. Over the last two years Saffron kitchen has expanded and now has a designated party room, which was booked with very large gathering. We chatted with one of the bartenders, Cody, who was very knowledgeable and made great drinks! And while we had spent over two weeks traveling in Southern California, none of the meals we had at any restaurants, compared to our absolutely wonderful dining experience we had here this evening! Please make a reservation to guarantee that you won't have to wait to be seated and I promise you, you'll be delighted with your dining experience at the fabulous Saffron Kitchen!

    Is Akbar still the owner?

Dear Pamela. There are no changes in the ownership of Saffron Kitchen.

    Do you have halal meat?

Dear Mr. Anwar. Thank you for your question. All meats/poultry at Saffron Kitchen are halal.

Hello I want to celebrate a bday at your restaurant. Is that big enough for around 13to 15 people? The reservation would be for this coming Friday at 7pm. Please let me know ASAP. Thank you.…

Yes. In fact, they have a private room. And, there is plenty of room in the main restaurant.

Do you have options that are gluten free and/or vegan? I didn't see those details called out on the menu on the website.

Dear Melissa. Thank you for reaching out. All our vegetarian dishes can be gluten free as long as you omit the yogurt sauce. For Vegan options again try our vegetarian dishes minus the yogurts. Our rice is vegan as well. We will state the above in…

Do you have a heater outdoors for your patio?

Dear Laurie. Thank you for connecting with us. Yes, we have four heaters in our patio. Two stationary up on the wall areas and two stand up heaters. I hope this helps. Thank you!

Are the vegetarian options dairy free? It looks like they have yogurt. Is there butter in them? Thank you

There are also vegan options, or were as of a couple months ago. Also, they are so nice there, I'm sure they'll accommodate you any way they can.

    Are there good vegan options?

Dear Sophie. Thank you for your question. All our vegetarian dishes (butternut squash, Eggplant, spinach, and cauliflower) are vegan. Also both type of rice are vegan. Hope this helps.

We arrived as walk-ins and noted four visibly open tables inside. With no host at the door, I walked toward the back, only to be redirected to the entrance by a waitress to wait. We waited patiently while the hostess was tied up on a long phone call. When she finally hung up, another party (who happened to be white) walked in and admitted they were late for their reservation. Instead of acknowledging me--a brown person who had been following the rules and waiting right in front of her--the hostess bypassed me entirely to assist the tardy arrivals. I understand that reservations take seating priority, but bypassing basic human acknowledgment to cater to a late party felt incredibly disrespectful and carried the heavy sting of implicit bias. When we pointed out that we were there first and should have been spoken to, the hostess inexplicably offered us a recently occupied outside table and quoted a 30-45 minute wait, completely ignoring the four open tables sitting empty inside. If management wants to improve their service, here are a few basic tips: Acknowledge guests in order: Always speak to the person who has been waiting first. A simple, 'I need to check in this late reservation, but I will be right with you,' goes a long way. Communicate transparently: If four inside tables are being held for upcoming reservations, explain that. Quoting a 45-minute wait for an outside table while the dining room looks empty just feels insulting. Don't leave the door unattended: If waitstaff redirects guests to the host stand, ensure someone is actually available to help them in a timely manner. Hospitality starts the moment you walk in the door, and the lack of basic respect here completely ruined the evening. Let me get this straight. You claim to have reviewed "security footage" to verify what happened. But you conveniently didn't mention whether that footage has audio. Because if it doesn't--and most restaurant security cameras don't--then you have no idea what was actually said or not said at that door. You can see who walked in and when. You cannot see who was acknowledged, who was ignored, or what tone was used. So your "we reviewed the footage" defense is only half the story at best. You claim your hostess was "taking a phone order for a to-go customer." That's fine. But taking a phone order doesn't explain why you bypassed me--the person standing right in front of you--to assist a late party that hadn't even been waiting. You say you "must honor existing reservations." I agree. But honoring a reservation doesn't require ignoring a walk-in who has been standing there patiently. A simple "I'll be right with you" would have taken two seconds. That never happened. You say I "chose to leave." Yes--after being dismissed, ignored, and offered a 45-minute wait for an outside table while four tables sat empty inside. That's not walking out. That's realizing I wasn't welcome. You say "an empty table is not necessarily an available one." True. But if four tables are being held for reservations, you could have explained that. Instead, you quoted a 45-minute wait for an outside table while the dining room looked empty. That's not communication--that's deflection. You say the suggestion of bias is "simply not supported by what happened." But you reviewed footage without audio. You don't know what was said, what wasn't said, or how it was said. You're defending the sequence of events--not the experience. You claim to be a "multiracial company" that "proudly serves everyone." That's great. But the experience I had didn't reflect that. I'm not saying you're racist. I'm saying your front-of-house service that night made me feel invisible, and your response is trying to gaslight me into thinking it didn't happen. If you want to improve, start by acknowledging that perception matters. And if you're going to cite security footage as proof, be transparent about what that footage can and cannot show. Because without audio, it's just video of people moving around--not proof of what was said or felt. --- P.S. If your cameras don't have audio, you're not "reviewing the interaction." You're reviewing the choreography. There's a difference. And if they do have audio, are you recording customer conversations without their knowledge? That's a whole other problem.
