Shattuck is full of fun bars to slip into, Tipsea being one of them. I've been here twice, and this was the first time trying snacks while here besides cocktails. Looking for an in-between spot (a sip and bite before dinner), we cozied up to the bar here for a quick cocktail and bar food snack. We ordered onion rings that came with the choice of a variety of sauces including Tikka Sauce, Siracha Mango, Sweet Chili, Korean BBQ, Hot Honey, and more. Both the cocktails and snacks came timely, and we enjoyed conversation and community chatting with other locals/tourists visiting Berkeley for a short time. The vibes are right in Tipsea and I dig the nautical ambiance/theme/play on words. Worthy of a stop through; street parking on Shattuck/paid garages nearby, but ride-share sometimes easiest for these locations. Berkeley sure was packed this past Saturday, but surprisingly this bar wasn't, though they did have quite a few customers. Prior to arriving I had to circle a bit for parking. After being ambitious for three minutes to find parking, I parked across the street on Durant. My friend and I arrived, were greeted and seated ourselves in one of the booths. Looking at the drink menu we asked for recommendations - I got Lightkeeper's Daughter, which has a nice citrusy taste. Side note but I love when they give us crushed small balls of ice. My friend ordered the Green Lantern, which was very good. I think the fresh Fiji apple juice inside is what made this drink stand out, though it didn't have the slight cider taste that you get from fresh apple juice. It was just good. Drinks get a 5/5. I ordered the truffle burger and good gawd was it delicious. I'd definitely order again. It comes with fries, and I upgraded to the Cajun fries they had. Lemme get back to the burger - I'm not a person who goes crazy for burgers but sometimes I just have that craving for red meat. This burger did not disappoint - the mushrooms were made perfectly and were in each bite of the burger with nothing falling off - you know how sometimes the burger is too stuffed and ingredients start to come off? Not here. 10/5 for the burger. It just might be the best burger I've ever had, no exaggeration. Considering this bar markets themselves as the best bar in Berkeley and I had a really good experience, I'd like to come back and try other drinks and other items off of the menu. I never expected to be wowed by the burger here, but as a fan of truffle I was glad this was on the menu. They have NA beverages and I was tempted to try, especially since my astrological sign is the name of one of the mocktails, but here is my issue. Why are we having NA beverages cost the same as alcohol beverages? It just seems like a rip to me, no matter how well you craft us some juice. Just my opinion, but it's nice they offer NA beverages since more and more people are letting go of the liquor. However, my point still stands. $15 is nuts to me. Have I spent that before at another restaurant/bar before? Sure have, when I wasn't drinking and I've decided that I'd rather opt for water or a Topo Chico if offered. The ambiance here was mellow. We came to the bar because our friend who worked in Berkeley used to work right up the it was super close and the timing was perfect because it was right after the city's very first Pride festival. Super convenient spot to end up at. The bar is on the smaller side, but unless you show up during peak hours it doesn't feel crowded. When we got there, I saw maybe four or five booths, a couple of tables in the back, and some bar seating. The whole place has a cozy speakeasy vibe and it's really cute. When we left is when it got super busy!! Everyone from Berkeleys pride was showing up! They've got a solid selection of liquor, especially if your into whiskey, mezcal, or tequila. The owner apparently isn't a fan of vodka, but they still keep it on the menu since a lot of people like that liquor. I loved how all the bottles are lined up on these bookshelf-style racks with a rolling ladder. Such a cool detail. The bartender was awesome! super sweet and she made really good drinks. I stuck to the menu, but added in a couple of other items lol. The only thing I regret is not snapping a picture of the menu because they have happy hour every single day and the food and drinks looked really good. I found this spot on Google because I really wanted a tasty lunch and drink, but I wanted to try somewhere different. It was about 4 pm when I arrived and it was not packed. All patrons were at the bar, so I sat there as well. The bartender, Hayley, greeted me warmly. They have Happy Hour from 2 pm to 5 pm daily. I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger meal and it came with fries. I ordered that from the regular menu. It was $17 (I think) Hayley reccomended the Blackberry margarita when I asked what flavors could she make the marg. Oh.. she also Guava was good too. I ordered that from the Happy Hour menu. It was $10 with $1 extra for the flavor. They make their burgers medium well automatically. They have a special sauce that taste like tikki sauce. I got it in the side because I was unsure if I would like it. However, I wound up putting it on my burger lol. They made my bacon crispy, not burnt. Exactly how I requested for it. The fries were good too. The drink...soooo yummy. I had 2 lol. Hayley was very accomodating, friendly and warm. She is in the pics. I told her that I will come back when she is working, so I can bring my wife because they have $1 oysters and she would love that. Also, I think she would like the overall vibe and tasty drinks. I didn't really know what I wanted to drink so I asked the service whatever is pink and pretty. she brought out a pretty pink tequila drink for it which I enjoyed a lot! I had the B.L.A.T burger and it was good. I like how the fries were small and crunchy. They didn't have honey mustard or ranch though so that was a little disappointing. The venue was pretty. We came here on a mild Friday night, started off great with a really sweet bartender- so attentive and made the best drinks. Luck was not on our side as she had to leave for break and then things went downhill. We just wanted a shot to add to our really well made but slightly sugary drink. Said bartender refused to acknowledge till we flagged her down, We got a shot to share between two cocktails, not long after it was poured It was knocked out of my hand by someone in the bar walking by. Under most circumstances, one would offer out of courtesy to replace the drink. However she didn't, made us pay for a new drink minus the shot we also paid for. Not the best experience. read more

First time visiting Tipsea! Already had a welcoming vibe from the security guard and the bartenders. The menu is available online on their website and the physical one is very cute resembling a pirate's journal. It lists the key ingredients and there are plenty to choose from. We tried: Floral Reef $16 - Ginger guava tequila Lightkeepers Daughter $15- pineapple coconut rum The Green Flash $14- Basil Fuji apple Vodka Unseen Depths $16- Bourbon with hint of sesame oil French Fries $7.95 - perfectly fried, salty and the tikka sauce is Bomb! There's bar seating as well as booths. Great spot to hangout with friends. I visited around 9pm on a Thursday and was able to get a booth with friends. 10/10 bathroom, pretty clean and extra toilet paper was stocked. If you go here for the 1st time, I HIGHLY ADVISE sitting at the bar and being taken care of by Shiloh! I was happy that I sat at the bar because I explained to her it was my first time there and asked if she had any recommendations and she sure did! I told her what I usually drink and what type of flavor profile I wanted and she advised for Drink #1, UNDER THE TIDEPOOLS (refreshing!), Drink #2, THE BIRTH OF VENUS (Yo! There's a nice kick to it! A Berkeley student-type joint where things could work better but do not. In my visit there were like 5 people working but some seemed quite new and uninformed. Hey you gotta start somewhere. The ambiance is kind of "was really nice now a little run down" many lights either not working or not turned on, there's a halfhearted attempt at nautical decor to go with the name, but I don't feel they pulled it off. Lots of bottles on the shelf but no menu listing what they have. At $15 each, drinks were expensive, even when I got a cocktail made with the well bourbon. They have "Industry Specials" not only on Monday which is typical, but 4 days a week. Probably some good bargains there. I'm glad they were open on a Monday, lots of places on Shattuck are not. But if I had a choice of Tipsea or another option I'd look into the alternative. read more

I came here with a friend and didn't realize that Berkeley can be popping at night. This is one of the few bars in the area where you can bar hop between and the vibes here are great. I love the ambiance inside it makes a great place for a casual cute date or fun night with friends. They also offer some bites too. Service is good it does get crowded later in the night. What a great bar! My friends and I actually stumbled upon this place unintentionally when on the way to a different bar, but were drawn in by the vibe and atmosphere. Having been in the area for so long, we decided to give it a try on a Tuesday night. There were still a few seats available and we were able to sit at the bar and order the first round of drinks before a table opened later in the night. I ended up getting two in total, the pisco punch and the lemon drop. Both were so good and very reasonably priced as well! There was a good balance of everything and you could definitely feel the alcohol as well. The bartender was really friendly as well, and we had a fantastic experience overall. I definitely want to try some of their food items sometime too. This spot seems like a hidden gem for now, but I'm sure it'll start to blow up soon one the rest of the Berkeley community finds out :) read more

This place is amazing. A must visit for cocktail and small plate lovers! However, negatives: 1. Door would stick open just enough to let in a cold draft. Gotta fix that to seal off the chill, please. 2. Service was weird. We were ready to order a 2nd round, but our bartender was looking at her phone for a good 5 minutes, and then was talking to the hostess/waitress. We could not get either of their attention for a long time. 3. The cocktail "Under the Tidepools" includes Baijiu, which tastes very strange. Just a heads up unless you are used to sorghum liquor. Positives: a) Chicken wings are deep fried and crispy. Quite excellent. I had the Lemon Pepper, but I'd imagine all flavors are good. b) Tuna tartare was also delicious. c) Highly recommend the "Song of the Sea" cocktail. Will be back to try everything else! read more
