A friend recommended this place as the "best Indian in STL" and they were sooo right! My partner and I stopped in for dinner on a weekday, and while the outside might look unassuming, the food was packed with flavor! They were decently busy for dinner with takeout orders and had plenty of inside seating. Our wait staff was very friendly and attentive to every table, taking great care of us. The inside was very classic and spacious, with plenty of room between tables. My partner and I started with the Aloo Pakora, garlic cheese naan, and the onion kulcha. This was a great way to start our experience as the waiter explained each dish to us, as well as the different sauces we could enjoy with it! For our entree, we got a generous portion of lamb biryani and chicken tikka masala. They confirmed what spice level we would like (1-5, with 1 being not hot and 5 being spicy). We got the 3 and thought it was the perfect spice level for us, as people that frequently enjoy spicy foods. To end, we got a ras malai for dessert, which is a cold dessert with milk and pistachios. We enjoyed grabbing takeout from Saffron while visiting StL. It's my brother and sister-in-law's go-to Indian food restaurant. They absolutely love it. I agree! The food was yummy and I wouldn't hesitate to return. I especially enjoyed the KADHAI OKRA and the GARLIC CHEESE NAAN. The CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA was good, but I prefer our go-to Indian restaurant in OKC's Chicken Tikka Masala to Saffron's. All that to say, the food was delicious and I'd happily return. We ran into a snag when picking up our to-go order as we waited about 30 minutes beyond the quoted pickup time, but it was a busy Saturday night. Lunch at Saffron is not much different from dinner service, but less crowded (at least on a Wednesday). With no lunch menu and no current buffet offering, you order from the main menu. Our server mentioned that they haven't had the buffet lunch since before Covid, and it doesn't sound like they will offer it anytime soon. Our server was efficient and work focused. While he wasn't exceptionally friendly or bubbly, he did a great job. Overall, we have found their server and work staff to be very experienced with the menu and options. Same here. We ordered meals to share for three. One of us doesn't like spice, so we went with mild, but asked for a side of hot sauce, which did the trick. Three of us shared: - yellow daal: very garlic, cilantro and ginger forward. Wasn't the best we have had, but decent. 3.25 - Chicken Makhani: If you are a fan of chicken tikka masala, try this! It's the same ingredients, but the chicken is cooked in the tandoori oven vs. cooked in the broth. I prefer the clay-oven roasted chicken flavor. This was very tasty. Order medium or hot if you can handle a bit of spice. 4.0 - chef signature biryani: Layers of flavor! Lamb was cooked perfect. Chicken was a bit over cooked. Boneless chicken is used. While this does help in making it easier to eat, it does remove some flavor. Yogurt served on the side - be sure and use it. The brightness and creaminess brings this up a level. Order medium or hot if you can handle spice. 4.0 - naan: two orders yielded 8 pieces about 4x4. From past visits, also consider chicken tikka masala, samosas. Well this was a pleasant surprise...first timers to Saffron and really enjoyed it. First I have to say thank to their entire staff for their help and courtesy. Our table had questions about the menu, options, spice level and recommendations and our server was kind, patient and extremely polite. And the entire staff pitched in to make sure our food was presented with explanations, our drink glasses were never empty, and our dishes were cleared quickly. Of course we ordered way more than we needed so we were presented carry out boxes without needing to ask. The service was absolutely 5 star! Loads of questions about menu options but we landed on an assorted naan tray (great sauces!) as an appetizer which was plenty for 4 to share. My wife had palak paneer (what a surprise! flavor was outstanding), I had shrimp biryani (med spice level - fantastic - would definitely order again), one guest had chicken tikka masala (awesome), and another guest had stir fried vegetables. Everyone enjoyed their dishes and shared with others. Although mine was perfectly spiced for my taste, medium has a bit of heat. So for those guests who are a little heat / spice level sensitive go with low / no heat. And again, our server explained Saffron's spice levels, asked everyone for their desired spice, and confirmed once ordered. I can't rave enough about the service! Excellent night out. I am not a spicy food fan. But to be honest, the mild seasoning my Aloo Gobi were good. My partner for dinner had Chicken Vindaloo. I bet that vindaloo is an Indian word for really hot. He said that it depends on who the taste buds belonged to. It is interesting that Indian food is hot because of a variety of ingredients not just cayenne pepper. Anyway, the service was a bit slow but the restaurant was almost completely full. Everyone appeared to be enjoying the food. The ambience of this place is one of people having a good time. We have tried many dishes and appetizers and again, almost everything was to our liking. Be sure to let them know how spicy hot you want it... or not spicy at all. You don't have to worry about that here - they were spot on with the flavor profile, tenderness of the chicken, and creaminess of the sauce. The rice that came with paired perfectly with the chicken as it was nicely seasoned and buttered. I've never had garlic cheese naan, and it met all my expectations. My favorite Indian place in west county. The food is always fresh and the staff is always attentive (my water glass never goes empty here)! When they're busy, it can take a bit to get your food or check but they food is quite obviously prepared to order, you can select your own spice level. I always enjoy the naan and korma dishes, as well as the tandoori dishes. I also enjoy sharing the appetizer sampler with friends, the chutneys are incredibly flavorful. After a few minutes of talking we decided Saffron and let me just say that was one of the best meals I have ever had!!!! When we got out our car we could smell the food instantly, and when we walked in we were greeted with a warm smile from one the staff members! The restaurant is warm, inviting, and always clean. I've dined here by myself and with a large group, and the staff is one of the best I've encountered in St. Louis! This place is a hidden gem. I live in O'Fallon, IL and was at the Botanical Gardens on Labor Day with the woman I am dating. We were hungry and I had Indian cuisine on my mind. So, I Googled some places and chose Saffron out of the blue. I am glad I did. The prices were very reasonable, the service was really good, and best of all the food was amazing and on point. You know you're in a good Indian restaurant when you go inside and see a few Indian or other ethnic folks eating there as well. I am so obsessed with this place that all I can do is strategically plan my next drive out there to try the buffet. This is one of the best Indian food restaurants I have tasted..ever..in my life. I heard about this place from a co-worker and scheduled a girls night out. We ordered pakoras, samosas(meat and veggie) paratha, and an assorted naan basket. I ordered the chicken tikka masala which was soooooo tasty. My spice level was a 3 and it was absolutely perfect for me. I also ordered the rice pudding for dessert and it was the perfect finish to such a great meal. This place gets five stars for its amazing customer service. and Value-focused meals (you will actually get enough chicken in your dish, the samosas are larger than the palm of your hand, and they are generous with the rice portions). You get your money's worth. For three meals, two appetizers and two desserts for a table of three, we spent 33 each, all had food to take home. I actually got two meals out of my leftovers. So the value is definitely there. Tip #1: If you do not like spicy food do not get higher than a 1 spice level. If you love spicy and still want to be able to enjoy all of the flavors, a 2-3 should suffice. Tip #2: Get the dessert. Tip #3: Be ready to unbutton your pants. If you read my reviews regularly you will know one thing I don't do a whole lot is eat Indian food. This was my first time at Saffron. It was a Friday night and they were just about full when we walked in and by the time we left (8:15) people were still waiting for tables. We ordered GOBHI MANCHURIAN (Stir-fried cauliflower sautéed with ginger, garlic, and soy sauce) with Level 2 spice, Vegetable Fried Rice with Level 4 spice, ALOO GOBI (Fresh cauliflower cooked with potato and Indian spices) with a Level 4 spice, a roti, and a garlic naan. I liked everything we ordered except that I didn't try the roti. I thought the breading on the Gobi Manchurian was a little too thick and I would have liked it a bit spicier but I was really impressed by the Vegetable Fried Rice and the Aloo Gobi.
