Ive never met an Indian Resturant I didn't like until today and I feel as if I should warn others. Ordered on Uber eats and it got here quite quickly so all dishes were still warm on arrival. Pakoras are so dry and lack flavor. The chutneys that came with them are not bad but not what I expect when I'm getting chutney from an Indian restaurant. Malai Kofta was an unusual color and has kind of chicken noodle soup kind of flavor to it? It's not giving me the flavors I know and love from this dish. The garlic naan is so tough and almost flat bread like leaving a greasy film in my mouth with each bite. Kheer tastes nice but is not quite the flavor and texture you would expect from this dish. Mango Lassi was nice, but no additional notes because it's not something I'm used to ordering. I was planning on portioning this out for dinner tonight and lunch at work tomorrow but just after tasting each dish I really don't want to eat more. We are so excited to have found this place. I can't believe we missed it for so long. The chef is Goan, and we are looking forward to trying a lot of the goan items on the menu. This time, we got Indian Chinese and enjoyed it. We got Chicken lollipop, Burnt garlic fried rice, Hakka noodles, and Chicken Manchurian. We loved all the items we had. Chicken lollipop comes with a spicy sauce, we loved it together. The fried rice, chicken manchurian, and hakka noodles were great. What surprised us was the quantity, we easily got double the quantity of food as other places for the same price. We will be back soon. read more

We ordered rice and vegetables for a special event. The chef made sure everything was excellent and our guests loved the food.

Highlights: - Can run into a long wait: call ahead! - Not terribly easy to access (parking) and likely you won't be dining in - Come for the biryani rather than the curry Saffron spice is really one of those places where you need to order the right thing. Their curries have been... pretty passable, but their biryani (and maybe it's specifically the lamb biryani) continues to deliver time and time again. They're not stingy with the amount of meat that's included and it is well balanced by the flavorful rice that envelops it. Little bits of fried onions/shallots (sorry it's been a while and I can't recall but more likely shallots if my memory serves) makes the biryani really pop! Its location at the intersection of Holgate and Rainier makes it very visible, but it's really not super accessible. I wouldn't really want to dine in here as much as leave my car with blinkers on to quickly pick something up. Speaking of, make sure you order ahead! The few times we've come to pick up, we actually found that you'll want to get there right at their estimate or a little later (contrasted with most other places where they give you the 95-99% estimate, Saffron Spice has struck me as particularly optimistic). This may be due to the large number of DoorDash/UberEats orders they get that make it difficult to accurately estimate. read more

So my niece really wanted to come here because it was one of the few places in town where she could get the dish in question. When we arrived we almost turned right around and left! In retrospect, I'm glad we didn't! THE ROSES: The food is amazing! These guys know Indian cuisine. The flavors are magnificently on point, and the heat level is just right. I can't say enough good things about this food!!! THE THORNS: The dining room - if you can call it that - is a joke. Cramped and dingy. When we told the proprietors that we wanted to eat there, they seemed truly surprised. I get the impression that 99% (or more) of their business is 'to go'. One look at the neighborhood tells you why; it is a dystopian nightmare that makes Manhattan Island in "Escape From New York" look like Disneyland by comparison. Everywhere you turn are vagrants, gooned-out drug zombies, and people who look a lot like gangbangers giving you the stank eye. If we didn't luck onto a place to park where we could keep an eye on our car, we would've left. I felt very uncomfortable here in daylight, and I sure as hell wouldn't be hanging out here after dark! THE VERDICT: Great food, but only order takeout. Here you're probably better off getting one of the food delivery services (DoorDash, etc.) to actually get your grub for you, unless you have a yen for danger and have a CCP. 3 5 star place! Interesting flavors here. Sort of indian with chinese fusion. They have a food truck but this is their brick and mortar location in an awkward spot just off of Rainier. I Haven't loved everything i have tried here but they do have some stand out foods i really like! Garlic naan: each are made to order and is amazing! Perfect slight char and chewy inside! Always get this! Gobi manchurian: fried cauliflower in a "general tso's" like sauce. If you are a fan of general tso's chicken but want veg version this is it! Saag paneer: one of my go to dishes. Version here is okay. A bit watery Mix veg patties: sort of a veg fried patty. A bit too thick perhaps and wish it was more crispy. Egg drop soup with veg: sort of a sweet and sour soup flavor and Not an egg drop soup flavor. Not sure it works for me. I keep coming back for the nice freshly made naan and that tasty cauliflower appetizer gobi manchurian! read more

Holy sweet Bejesus! I've had Indian food before... several times, in fact, and not ONCE has it blown me away. Well, Saffron Spice has changed the game. I came here for lunch with a coworker while in Seattle on a business trip, not thinking much of the place (it's not in a very nice neighborhood, nor is it very nice looking). I ordered the beef vindaloo as takeout, and we were on our way back to the customer site. As we were walking into the building, multiple people commented on the smells, asking where we had went. When they heard Saffron Spice, we got a couple "oh, they're so good!", a "that's my favorite place around here!", and a "I've only heard good things". All of them were right (even the favorite place one, because it is not MY favorite place in the area). Don't let the interior of this place, nor it's location fool you. The food is AMAZING. Best samosas hands down. Delicious lamb biryani and fish curry too. This hidden gem, tucked away just off of Rainier, is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. One note of additional appreciation, last time I visited I ordered online and didn't see that the mango lassi was already in the bag. I assumed it was forgotten and when I asked about it the owner gave me two (for a total of three) just because. When I got home I felt bad that it was already in the bag and I didn't think to look! I appreciated his generosity and willingness to trust me (even though it was already packed). With such great food and service I will definitely go back. read more

Saffron Spice catered an event I went to, and it was a huge hit! Everyone was raving about the food, so it made for a nice time. Located off of Rainier Avenue, the event was next to the restaurant, so it was nice to be able to try a local restaurant in the area. Saffron Spice brought yogurt chicken breast, samosas, pakora, pita and chutneys. They also had housemade lemonade for drinks. It was a good spread. I liked all of the food, but was impressed by how tender and flavorful yet light the cubes of chicken breast were. Sometimes chicken breast can taste dry, but it was not the case here. It was perfectly cooked and loved the yogurt sauce on it. Pita was very soft, and liked trying the different chutneys to go with. Pakora was solid, with a nice fry from the breading. But my favorite were the samosas! I have to admit, I am not huge on samosas, but they were definitely the best I've had. It was heavily stuffed with potatoes and peas and the batter was light. Get the samosas! Glad to have tried Saffron Spice during this event, as I don't often eat out on Rainier Ave. But it makes me think twice, as I would happily visit Saffron Spice for a dine-in experience, which can only go up from here. read more

I really enjoyed these Goan dishes from Saffron Spice in Beacon Hill: - Goan fish curry, 5/5: It has tender pieces of fish swimming in a spicy coconutty curry. It tasted exactly like how I experienced it on a beach in Goa years ago. Go try this dish without getting on a plane! - Chicken peri peri, 4/5: Favorful chicken tenders accompanied perfectly with fries and a side salad. - Goan bread pudding, 5/5: This is the star of the show. Buttery dense bread soaked in rich eggy custard and baked, then covered in a generous layer of banana sauce studded with banana slices. I just can't go back to regular bread pudding after this. Must try item! Goan food has elements of Indian and Portuguese. Then when brought to the US, Saffron Spice might have incorporated other local elements as well. The food here is amazing, we had the chicken biryani, veggie biryani, one of the chicken currys, raita, and naan. Absolutely fabulous! Good sized servings, there were three of us, and there was enough food left over for all of us to have lunch the next day. If I was getting just one dish, I would definitely get the chicken biryani. Food here is just out of this world. They get the little details right: The paneer is lightly browned on the outside. The char on the chicken is just the right level to bring out the charcoal flavor, but not overwhelm the seasoning. Just throw a dart on the menu and you'll land on something delicious. read more

When ordering I was told Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala are the same thing. Similar, yes. The same? No. The Masala/Butter chicken was overly salty and lacking flavor at the same time. Partner was craving Indian and this was on the way home. Had a little bit of a wait for our food but oh my gosh was it so yummy!

We ordered the Goan Fish Curry and the flavor was average, fish was very spongy (seemed like it was frozen for a long time) and did not soaked in any flavor of the curry, garlic naan was okay with lots of butter and my mango lassi was okay. The price seemed higher than the food quality ($17 for fish curry). Other than that, our servers were super friendly and attentive which is a plus. There are street parking but this area seems very sketchy, I would not park and eat here for an extended amount of time. read more

COVID has meant doing a lot more takeout than I would otherwise do, and that led us to Saffron Spice. Although it is nothing to look at when driving by, the food is excellent. We got a handful of dishes to share, including vindaloo and butter chicken, with naan and rice. Excellent quality, large portions, good heat (as requested) and even better on the leftover reheat the day after. We'll be back for more! read more

COVID has really made me order out more to support small businesses and I urge y'all to do the same and try out saffron spice! It's a chinese indian fusion which blew my mind that this wasn't something I had tried before. We love Indian and Chinese food in our home & we felt like this was the perfect combo to ring in 2021. The samosas were PERFECTION. I've eaten a lot of samosas and this was top notch... If I could have this everyday I would. Butter chicken was also delicious - though I added a little more garam masala at home just cause it was heavy on the tomatoes and tasted a little bit like spaghetti-os. The gobi manchurian was to do for. I love this dish! Also I loved that they gave us basmati rice without needing to charge us - unusual for Seattle. One thing that's tricky about this location is the size of the place for pick-up. I would suggest standing outside for social distancing. I love a good hole in the wall and this place delivers and then some. The only Indian place before getting into the hill and they will make your food fresh when you order and throw on all the extras. The dining area is modest but the staff check on your regularly to make sure you have everything you need. The curry is on point, the naan is fresh and i will be back soon! read more

Food was tasty. Did the garlic naan and the butter chicken. The helping was a bit small, would return here and ask for a bit more food.

It was way too spicy to even taste good. Burnt my tongue and my taste buds went numb after a coupe bites.

This is not one of the best restaurants but this is THE restaurant to go to, to savor restaurant style Goan food. I am a Goan and I could not find a single restaurant serving proper Goan food in Seattle. I agree that this restaurant may have customized Goan curry a bit but still the taste stays predominantly Goan. I had no hope that the food would taste anywhere close to the kind I had back in Goa but I was surprised to the core when I had my first bite of fish curry and Reacheado fried fish from this restaurant. Take a word from this Goan, their Recheado fish is to die for. It will be the most flavorful fried fish you would have ever had without the typical super powering taste of spices and garlic. You can even have it as a side dish with a nice glass of chilled beer. I personally called this restaurant and thanked them to help me relive the experience of savoring Restaurant style Goan food. Do NOT judge this book by its cover. The place is very unremarkable from the outside, the seating area is small and completely undecorated, and all of our food was served to us on paper plates. That being said, the food was **delicious**, unique, fresh, visually appealing and full of interesting new flavors that we haven't had in all of our years eating Indian in Seattle. At first glance the prices seemed a little bit high considering the environment, but after eating ALL of it, I feel that they are completely in line with the quality of the food. I have paid similar prices for much less satisfying food elsewhere. The service was wonderful. The owner is very friendly, he treated our kids like royalty, and even brought them a little something extra when he noticed that one of the dishes we ordered was too spicy for them. We will absolutely be coming back here, and we will hesitantly tell our friends about it even though it's always nice to have a best kept secret. read more

Not terrible, but not very good as far as Indian food goes. Chicken Tikka Masala sauce tasted more like a creamy tomato pasta sauce than like Tikka Masala. Garlic naan was too crispy on one side and too doughy on the other. Pakoras were alright, but nothing to write home about. read more
