    Summer flight
    Yoori S.

Both flights and all the meads in the flights tasted like a combination of vinegar and honey. Can't say that I enjoyed it. I would've tried other meads but decided not to because I didn't feel like waiting around 15 minutes to be served at an empty indoor tasting room. The lady working the counter seemed preoccupied and left people coming in to order standing around without any acknowledgement. Different groups of people stood around while she carried on a conversation with a couple of people. She seemed to be the only one working the indoor tasting room. When she finally came around, we were sort of brushed off quickly. Didn't provide any information as to the flights or anything else for that matter. We got our flight, tried it, and left in less than 30 minutes.

Did both flights. Both were very good and both very accurate on their descriptions. They only opened on July 4th. So they definitely have room for improvements among other small things. I walked out with a bottle of Puffs sweet heat. Which is fantastic if you like a little bit of honey mixed with heat. Definitely my favorite. And also purchased the Crisp Apple, and bourbon barrel mead as well. They were definitely my top three!

Wonderful experience for first time (and experienced) mead drinkers. The very personable owner gave detailed explanations of all 8 that we tried. I highly recommend everyone visiting here.

I had a brief and lovely visit where I tasted their wildflower and their sunburst citrus.

BLUF: Best mead in VA. Limited seating…read more Drinks (5/5): They have the BEST mead in all of VA. They use more honey than any other meadery I've been to. Usually meaderies use a lot of juice to save money on the honey, but not this place. If you tilt their bottles, it takes TIME for that mead to shift. That's how you know it's more honey than juice. It's absolutely amazing. I haven't had a single flavor here that I didn't like. You can't go wrong with anything here. The pricing is good. It's more expensive to buy a bottle here than from Mom's Apple Pie down in Bluemont, which is weird, since this is where the mead comes from. But either way, you support an amazing business. Service (5/5): GREAT service. The owner mans the counter and is so nice and explains the different flavors and the whole process! You get a mead lesson AND get to drink. Ambiance (5/5): So. You pull up to what seems like someone's backyard with a shipping container on it. The parking lot is gravel, there's PLENTY of parking tho, so don't worry about that. Then you just walk over to the shipping container and BAM you're at the bar. There is VERY limited seating, so don't expect to bring a whole group of people here and expect to sit down. You're lucky to find 2 seats next to each other. The scent of honey lingers in the air, making the whole room smell delicious. TLDR: Great mead.

We ordered 2 flights so we could taste all the current meads and they were all awesome, we couldnt pick a favorite. Richard the meadmaker was super friendly and knowledgebale telling us about the different meads, mead making process, and their farm/meadery. Misty Mountain has been making mead for 20 years! We have had mead from several other meaderies, this by far is our new favorite. You can order flights, mead by the glass and bottles. They also have other related merch for sale. Tasting room decor is eclectic, medievil, bee/honey motif. Bar seating as well as some tables. Gender neutral bathrooms, plenty of parking. I was impressed by the wide selection of meads on tap so it actually took me a while to decide what to order! I ended up building my own flight with five different flavors. Overall, the meads leaned more toward the dry and crisp side rather than being overly sweet, which made them easy to drink without salty snacks. My personal favorites were BA Knotty Soda (Vanilla Bourbon) and Blueberry Brunch. In addition to mead, they also offer ciders, beers, smoothies, and snack plates like hummus, so there's something for everyone to enjoy. The staff was welcoming and friendly, making the experience even better. Parking was also convenient, with plenty of spaces right in front of the meadery. I'd definitely come back to try even more of their meads!

The servers are knowledge and friendly, and their wines and meads are so unique and well made. You can do a tasting of 8 of their wines and meads for $5, which is a great option if you have never been before. Hill Top is unique because it makes wines out of fruit, so you'll have wine here that you will never had anywhere else. I love their sweet melon wine, hunter's moon mead, and dragon's blood mead, among many others. Hill Top also has a great outdoor seating area where you can watch the goats and working dogs around the farm, with great views.

I have to always put Hill Top on my list when I am in the area. I ended up leaving with 12 bottles of wine and a jar of the wild flower honey. I wish they'd attend Norfolk VA wine festival again, I miss them so much! Emily "The traveling nurse", ended up assisting us during our time there. She was very welcoming, upfront and honest with her recommendations for our 2 flights that we selected. We chose from meads and berry wines as well. Emily didn't steer us wrong at all. After ordering we sat outside and enjoyed the breeze. Both flights came with oyster crackers and chocolate covered almonds. The Lavender and Persimmons was my fave selection. However, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to snag some bottles of Madison to go. The goats on site were too cute as well! I wish they'd attend Norfolk VA wine festival again, I miss them so much!

I peeped their website and noted that they sold Shortcake Bakery's patties, which is what I was looking for. Inside, this place is funky and fun. The staff were friendly. I tasted a few meads and went with the Mead Marian, a traditional mead, which was quite good. I also had the vegetable and curry chicken patties, which were excellent. The bathroom had a primer on bees, which was helpful and means I am minimally less likely to run screaming from them. I highly recommend siting and I am looking forward to returning.

One of the main mead ingredients is honey, which explains why they use a bee as their logo. They offer free tastings of all of their meads, and most of them can be in a flight of 3-5oz pours, depending on ABV. The Zanzibar and Mead Marian were my favorites -- one was their standard, and the other was their strongest. They were a lot of cool ones in between, like one having a coffee flavor, one being spicy, some being combined with fruits.... there was a lot of fun to be had tasting all of those. The honey taste really comes out most of the time. They don't make their own food, but they offer some snacks and sell patties and desserts from Shortcake Bakery, the shop next door. I had a chicken and veggie patty -- both were delicious and flaky! It also ended up being a night when a live performer was playing. I was devastated to see that I had just missed karaoke the night before though. The band was AWESOME, I have to say... very funky, and they weren't too loud either for the space. Some folks from my party got up dancing, so that's a good sign yeah?? All in all, I'd delightfully come back here just to hang out. Did I mention they have a bunch of board games? Pro tip: parking outside is EXTREMELY limited -- overflow is at the park across the street from Shortcake Bakery. After a certain time, you need to grab a pass from inside Meadworks.
