I came with 3 friends and we tasted his homemade meads, learning about his beekeeping, the process, the land, etc. He also offered us varieties that he's been working on/experimenting with flavors, herbs, fruits, etc. It was really fun and fascinating. Some were semi sweet, and some were way too sweet. But what do you expect? it's made from honey! Quaint place with overgrown flowers everywhere and the tasting room is like a cabin with all kinds of tchotchkes and countryside living paraphernalia. Usually meaderies use a lot of juice to save money on the honey, but not this place. If you tilt their bottles, it takes TIME for that mead to shift. That's how you know it's more honey than juice. It's absolutely amazing. I haven't had a single flavor here that I didn't like. You can't go wrong with anything here. The pricing is good. It's more expensive to buy a bottle here than from Mom's Apple Pie down in Bluemont, which is weird, since this is where the mead comes from. But either way, you support an amazing business. Service (5/5): GREAT service. The owner mans the counter and is so nice and explains the different flavors and the whole process! You get a mead lesson AND get to drink. Ambiance (5/5): So. Richard the meadmaker was super friendly and knowledgebale telling us about the different meads, mead making process, and their farm/meadery. Misty Mountain has been making mead for 20 years! We have had mead from several other meaderies, this by far is our new favorite. You can order flights, mead by the glass and bottles. They also have other related merch for sale. We took our four selections outside to one of their pavilions and enjoyed them, looking out over their vineyards. We tried two of their sparkling meads, the P.O.G and Juniper/Spruce Tips/Lemon, and two of their traditional meads, Druid and Jester. We liked the Juniper... and LOVED the P.O.G, so much so that we bought a bottle of it on our way out. The traditional meads were very heavy, kind of like a thick port. If you should find yourself in the middle of nowhere, this is a great place to stop, rest, and get your bearings.

I was impressed by the wide selection of meads on tap so it actually took me a while to decide what to order! I ended up building my own flight with five different flavors. Overall, the meads leaned more toward the dry and crisp side rather than being overly sweet, which made them easy to drink without salty snacks. My personal favorites were BA Knotty Soda (Vanilla Bourbon) and Blueberry Brunch. In addition to mead, they also offer ciders, beers, smoothies, and snack plates like hummus, so there's something for everyone to enjoy. The staff was welcoming and friendly, making the experience even better. Parking was also convenient, with plenty of spaces right in front of the meadery. You can do a tasting of 8 of their wines and meads for $5, which is a great option if you have never been before. Hill Top is unique because it makes wines out of fruit, so you'll have wine here that you will never had anywhere else. I love their sweet melon wine, hunter's moon mead, and dragon's blood mead, among many others.
