This was a very pleasant stop. Mike was working behind the counter when we arrived, and he was very helpful in helping us (and yes, I'm not a writer) to pick the meads for our flight. We took our four selections outside to one of their pavilions and enjoyed them, looking out over their vineyards. We tried two of their sparkling meads, the P.O.G and Juniper/Spruce Tips/Lemon, and two of their traditional meads, Druid and Jester. We liked the Juniper... and LOVED the P.O.G, so much so that we bought a bottle of it on our way out. The traditional meads were very heavy, kind of like a thick port. If you should find yourself in the middle of nowhere, this is a great place to stop, rest, and get your bearings. read more

I don't believe I've ever had mead before- this mead wowed my socks off! We seemed to like the classic mead more than the bubbly's. However, the bubbly's were more fruity & still delicious. They did sell some snacks, sold pre-packaged, which was fine by me as I couldn't finish all the crackers. There was only one worker, who was great! He was the tasting room manager, and did a great job telling us all about the mead and answering our 5001 questions. The view and atmosphere was stunning- even at the beginning of March. I am shocked. The customer service was awful. Arrived today, 11/15/2024 at 12:30pm. This place was on our way to New England and we were excited to try it. However, the person that was taking care of us was extremely RUDE. When I asked for her to tell me about the establishment she said "what do you mean" and told me when the tasting room opened and walked away to pour the tasting. As someone who frequents different wineries and breweries, I would have to say that the person that helped me (was wearing converse and a grey Tshirt) was just miserable. We were ready to spend money, but that won't be happening. I understand you may have wanted to relax on this early Friday afternoon but you are working. Completely unacceptable. I do NOT recommend. Our first time here and we fell in live with Orchid Cellar. The location is a bit off the beaten path, but we'll worth the drive. The location is absolutely beautiful and quiet. A great place to just sit and chill or chat with friends while you enjoy your drinks. The flights of Meade come with 4 choices and are reasonably priced at $15. I generally prefer a sweet, non-sparkly Meade. Byt I found I enjoyed all the ones we tried. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I liked their spicy ones. The spice was just enough to feel but quickly is dampened by the Meade. We definitely recommend to everyone to give Orchid Cellar a try. Oh. my. Orchid Cellar Meadery is a dangerous discovery for my wallet. I'm new to the mead game since moving to the east coast, but the mead here is seriously a game-changer. I came here last weekend with a friend and everything about this place was perfect! The service was fantastic, and they have a beautiful outdoor seating area on a patio and along the grass lawn. There's plenty of room and tables are well spaced out, so it was the perfect day to come out and sip on some mead. I ordered the flight, which came with two of their mead/wine hybrids, a sweet mead, and a spicy mead. Every sip was absolutely delicious, and for me the winner by far was "Monk". This specific mead tastes like liquid honey, but with a kick of high %ABV. The mead itself leaves a great mouthfeel, which I haven't gotten from other meads. I ended up purchasing a bottle of "Monk" to take home because it was just that good! I would absolutely check this place out as it is well worth the drive. I was very excited to try this place out as we have a bunch of great meaderies back in Wisconsin and I always love supporting local spots. I very much enjoyed the mead, but the experience could have been better. Went on a warm summer day with two friends and my two dogs. It was a struggle to find the few select spots with shade even though there was only one other group outside (they had the one table out on the patio with shade), but we found a great little spot on the balcony with great views. We did a mead sampler, but could only sample SOME of the meads... if you wanted to try other ones not for tasting you had to buy the bottle. I generally try them to see what I would want to buy... so that was a bit disappointing as we didn't want to purchase anything we couldn't try. The "plain" honey mead was phenomenal. We did get to try this one and bought a bottle to share after our sampler. Also tried the smoked peach which I was really excited about but had way too much pepper. The cherry and raspberry had good flavor, but way too syrup-y and sweet. My two buddies are into wine and really wanted to try some wines and take a few bottles home. Couldn't sample the wine... definitely wasn't going to spend the money on a bottle when I couldn't try it, so that was an incredible let down for traveling to a winery's tasting room. Like I said, I really liked the place and we had planned to stay longer and buy some bottles, but decided to move on and try some other spots in the area. Came here for a friend's birthday, and was blown away by the mead! The mead here is really sweet, and they also have meats and cheeses available for purchase if you want to make charcuterie. We also brought some of our own food and my dog! Super pretty area and very serene. I have to say, I've never been to a meadery before (and thought my friend was saying "meatery" when I first heard him) but it was cool! Our group of ten went with the flight option. Our host/pourer was very friendly and informative, and he helped us understand differences in production methods for the various meads. Probably at a Renaissance Fair or from some hippy friend who "knew a guy that makes it"; but I never had good memories of it. I always thought it too sweet, or not really complex. Thank goodness that the Owners of Orchid Cellar agreed with me and took it to task to create a subtle, balanced and delicious honey product! With mead mixed with wine, mead with fruit flavors, or just water and local honey, there's something here for every pallet to try. The cabin it's self is gorgeous, airy and bright. The grounds are also gorgeous and you can take a chilled bottle out to their covered patio and space out while staring at the beautiful hillside, barn (you can see chickens and beehives) or idyllic house placed next door. We did the flight taster which walks you through all their expressions. While an obvious, and delicious, honey flavor is the prime note, this mead adds the sublime undertones of other fruits and flowers that must attract those bees to the flowers in the first place. Yes, mead is still sweet, but when chilled, and drank on a hot day, it's refreshing and delicious. I will definitely be experimenting with mead in cocktails in the future! Just watch-out, with ABVs creeping into the 20%, this is a drink that should be enjoyed sparingly! read more

He was absolutely amazing. We purchased 3 meads that were on the dryer side. Never thought I'd taste that. This was 1 of the first 30 meaderies in the US. Now there is 600 across the country. My friend and I tried the Flight of Spice, it was fun sampling the varieties, a couple definitely had a strong kick to them! I love mead, but I typically only have it once a year at Renn Fest! So it was a wonderful surprise to discover a meadery while in Hagerstown. When we arrived, my friend and I immediately noticed the beauty of the property - there were fields and fields of sunflowers. It was so delightful and we took quite a few pictures. I was so impressed with the pricing, the service, and the unique mead and wine selections my friend and I tasted. We were especially keen on the Hunter Experiment! I don't eat cheese because I'm vegan, but this selection had a smoky flavor just like gouda! We were given food pairing recommendations with each wine or mead tasting. My daughter and I came up for an afternoon wine tasting on a delicious spring day in earliest April. We tried all the meads, and our favorite was Mesuline so we bought a half case. We also tried some of the aged meads and MONK was incredible. So we added a few more bottles to the box. After trying the spectrum, we settled in with our favorite glasses, went outside by the fire pit and enjoyed some local goat cheese, flatbread crackers and the stunning day! A wonderful place for mead. I did the tasting - 6 different types of mead and merlot. The mead is very good with a hint of natural sweetness from the honey. My favorites were the Botanist and Archer. I liked the sweetness from the Botanist and the cinnamon flavor from the Archer. I bought both bottles. Service is great - the owner's son is very nice and friendly. The meadery is located in a beautiful open space area, and provides a large outdoor space for visitors to enjoy their beverages. I was introduced to mead earlier this year, and it instantly became my alcoholic beverage of choice. Although I'm fairly new to the world of mead, the selection at Orchid Cellar far surpasses that of other meaderies that I've visited. The quality of Orchid Cellar's product is evident in its rich flavor profile, smooth consistency, and gorgeous packaging. Although all of the meads I tried were delicious, my favorite is Hunter. My favorites from the tasting were the Lumberjack (sweet and made with apples) and Juno (Pinot Gris rosé mead). I live this place. Tucked away in the farmland of Western MD, it was only an hour's drive from Fairfax, winding through some very picturesque scenery on the way. Orchid cellar makes mead... which is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting honey mixed with water, and sometimes with added ingredients such as fruits, spices, grains, or hops. Mead is NOT beer. This is not a brewery. Set your tastebuds accordingly. ORchard cellars has a wide variety of traditional meads and a line of lighter, fizzier meads that are more fruity in nature. I prefer the traditional kind and recommend you start with a couple of DYO flights to sample everything. My favorites were Archer, Alchemist and Duchess, but keep in mind the menu is in flux. The staff is charming, educated and helpful. I could talk honey consumption in the state of Maryland all night with them. Food is pretty basic, just cheese and charcuterie boards, but the staff is very chill and didn't mind us bringing our own food at all. A great stop on the way back from Antietam Battlefield, which is how we found it. read more

Their most recent, the barrel tasting, was amazing, and you learn so much about the mead process. The reason this gets 5 stars is the customer service. They do tastings I think they're like $9 but free if you join their club which is also free just requires you to buy a few bottles every quarter. Which if you do a tasting you'll have no problem doing. Once you are regular here they treat you like family. More than once we have brought a third person and they just waived the extra tasting fee even tho it is only 2 free tastings. And every time we go we end up getting another bottle or two. My favorite is probably the Knight. They also sell snacks to go with your mead which you can get a glass of or a bottle of. You get to keep the sample glasses, and last time we were there they had a nice fire in the fire pit outside to relax and drink by. read more
