This place is such a win. It's simple and straight to the point. You get two main things to focus on. The honey or the mead. And you get samplers of both. It fits us since the adults can do the mead and our kiddo gets the honey's. Both the whipped and the straight honey. The bee hive is a neat taste as it allows folks to just watch them do their thing. Talking to the staff there they are VERY knowledgeable and amenable to talk to. I feel like we learn something every time we visit. I passed by Mountain House Trading Co. on my way to pick up my sister from college for the holidays a few months back. The environment was very cozy, like something out of a book. There was a beautiful selection of meads, honeys, candles, balms and more. I was impressed with the excellent presentation and displays. Not to mention the gentleman that helped us out was extremely knowledgeable and helped me pick out some meads which I brought back home to my girlfriend. This wasn't on our plans originally but we spotted it while headed to our Airbnb and it was a must stop. They advertise honey and mead tastings and both were top reasons for checking it out. Entering, you realize there's more than just honey and mead. They have beer tastings, mead tastings, a honey tasting, and a creamed honey tasting. They also have lots of locally sourced items for purchase and plenty of honey-based goodies. We opted for the mead and creamed honey tasting. I've not ever had a honey tasting or heard of creamed honey, so this was a very cool option. It comes with six different flavors and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed this. I *REALLY* appreciate when there's something for the little ones to do/taste to make it more fun. She liked all but one of the honeys and we bought her favorite one. The mead tasting was also great and I walked out with two bottles. The shop and tastings are pricey for sure, but it's a great experience with delightful flavors and is worth the try for sure. What a gem we found while traveling this road!! We love honey especially when you know where it comes from directly. This place allowed you to sample different meads in a mead flight! They were all very good. We found one we really like and bought a big growler for our vacation. They have a really nice gift shop offering a wide variety of honey and creamed honeys, candles , soaps and small items. The main attraction of course was the bees that you could see in a glass panel going to work.. signs on wall giving you information on different bees.. the staff member we had was a very friendly informative gentleman. There was local beers in a fridge you could purchase and he answered all our questions so we'd know what to pick.. lots of gifts and cool stuff to buy.. highly recommend stopping if your ever in the area. read more

If yo like mead, then this is a can't miss. Multiple varieties, fresh honey, and more than reasonable prices. They will do growlers, or bottles, or cans. The staff is knowledgeable, and the owner is usually there. They love what they do, and they do it very well. Worth a significant detour, and I have multiple friends who drive from Staunton once a month to stock up, and it is nearly an hour each way. read more

Check this place out for a large variety of honeys from regular honey to fruit infused to smoked ghost pepper honey that's insanely hot. They also have a working honey comb so you can see the bees in action as they go inside and outside the shop via a tube. We frequently travel along the Rockfish Valley Highway corridor for several of the great wineries, and especially meaderies. I was glad to see a new spot pop up, but from the outside, it looked more like a shop and less like a mead spot. I wanted to grab a bottle of water or soda, and it looked like a spot to get that. Boy, was I wrong, and I am incredibly glad that I popped in -- what a fantastic spot! This definitely qualifies as one of those "hidden gems," where it is not what you're expecting from the outside. Mountain House Trading Company is, first and foremost, a honey company. You can stop in and pick up tonnes of different varieties of honey, ranging from reasonably normal "wildflower" to "smoked ghost pepper" (in the 2-million scoville range), or foam flower, etc. Lots of different varieties. Additionally, they have something called creamed honey. This is apparently a crystalized, infused honey, made with different flavours. We grabbed a pot of chocolate, which is just incredible on anything you want sweetened. It tastes like honey and like chocolate, but it spreads like peanut butter. Delicious. They also have a wonderful variety of beeswax ornaments (I hate to call them candles, I know they're candles, but ... are you ever going to melt one of these things? No way). In this region, you can't have honey without mead, and they have several varieties, as well as melomels and other alcoholic beverages. They're not yet set up for wide range tastings, but the ones they had available for tasting today were fantastic. I snagged a bottle of Elderberry mead, and it's everything I can do to avoid opening it tonight. Like a taste out of Napa, they also offer olive oil and vinegars -- something that I believe they're planning on expanding in the near future. Their next phase, however, is to expand some of their apiary supplies -- they'll offer a lot of cool bee keeping supplies down the road. The site has a viewing hive, so you can check out honeybees in their hive. Basically, if it has to do with honey, you can get it there. And it's fantastic. Definitely a welcome new spot for trips down the Highway. read more

I'm calling them to make sure I can get another jar sent to me since it's soooo good. I was going to do a mead tasting as well but I was buzzing from the honey rush since I couldn't leave any honey on the palette! We will definitely return! read more

The Rockfish valley has drawn us back over and over since moving to the Roanoke area 8+ years ago. This trip we found Mountain House and came away with beautiful jars of honey and a great experience because of the friendly and informative staff. It will now be a definite stop every trip. If you have never driven through the valley you have been missing beautiful VA scenery as well as numerous breweries, wineries and a farmers market every Saturday morning. read more
