Wow what a find! With this cold weather and much needed rain in the Bay Area, I was really craving some bun rieu. My bf lives near R&D and while they do have bun bo hue, they don't have bun rieu. Did a quick search on Yelp and we found this place nearby and it was well worth driving over a couple more miles! The decor here is pretty new and clean since I guess they just recently opened. The furniture is a bit mix and matched and we were sat in a tight corner, but it wasn't a huge deal. We ordered the nem nuong goi coun, a bun rieu for myself and the bf got a bun bo hue. I was so excited about the nem nuong spring rolls because it looked like they put the crispy fried skin inside of the rolls just like Brodards did. However, when it came out, they were very small and my boyfriend said he thought the meat was spam lol. At least the meat was grilled and it was freshly made? My boyfriend's bun bo hue came out next and while it was lacking in the color from the red chili oil, and therefore, spiciness, there was a strong lemongrass flavor that helped the broth stand out. At first we weren't that impressed with his order, but the lemongrass flavor became more and more addicting. My bun rieu came out last and was the star of our dinner and will recommend this to anyone. The waitress was also nice enough to bring out two clean bowls in case we wanted to share our two noodles. At first appearance there is a pretty thick layer of oiliness on top but it's actually from the crab paste used to make the soup and meatballs. It actually looks and tastes very similar to my mom's homemade bun rieu. We enjoyed every bit of our two noodle dishes, but we had to ask for the veggies because they forgot to bring them out to us. Even then, they just brought out the standard bean sprouts, japaleno peppers, lime, and basil and did not include the cabbage usually eaten with the bun bo hue. All in all I would say I would give a 3.5 stars but will round up giving them the benefit of the doubt to iron out some of the kinks of being newly opened. Their menu is more extensive than the average Vietnamese restaurant and they have an entire page of vegetarian dishes which I am excited to try next time. read more

Not complaining about service or flavor but for $9 I didn't feel like we were given much food. More than half of the togo container was vegetables, 3/4 rice and only 3 small pieces of beef, 3 shrimp and 1 spring roll. Would have been nice to get more meat. My gf and I had just visited my dad at Kaiser in San Leandro and decided to try this place out from yelp. First off, anyone that is visiting that Kaiser wanting to get food, this is the place to go. It's not far, reasonably priced, and the food is actually good. I was expecting it to be only ok, but the broth was really good. My gf ordered the pho tai and I got the pho dac biet, both small size. They gave a generous amount of noodles for small. I normally can eat mine and finish my gf's half eaten portion because she can never finish. But I couldn't this time, I could only finish my bowl. We also ordered the spring roll and egg roll. The peanut sauce for the spring rolls were delicious. One of the things that I appreciate about good Vietnamese restaurants is that everything is homemade with fresh ingredients; you can tell that this place is one of the good ones. As for service, the food came out fast. The man that helped us was kind and attentive. Overall, I definitely recommend this place if you're fixing to satisfy that pho craving. I know I'm coming back. Decent selection of food on the menu. It is a small corner restaurant in the Manor area. Smallish restaurant with mismatch chairs and tables and little knicks knacks on the window sill. Place is pretty clean but notice 2 flies flying around. The owner was very welcoming. Ordered to go, I had the grilled pork banh mi sandwich, the egg roll, the combination noodle soup, grilled beef over rice, vermicelli with grilled pork and vermicelli with grilled chicken. Portion size are huge! The grilled pork was on the sweet side but it was very tasty. The grilled chicken for the vermicelli had a lot of chicken in it but it was somewhat bland. The grilled beef over rice had a hint of lemongrass. The banh mi was good but wished the bread was crunchier and not soggy. Did not try the pho but mom enjoyed it and said that the broth was good. I hate giving bad reviews, but I guess not as much as Saigon House restaurant hates turning away customers. Here's our story: We were going to go to Porky's Pizza for lunch on the way to the Marina in San Leandro to fly kites. Unfortunately, Porky's was closed, so we decided to check out the restaurant across the street, Saigon House. We checked out their menu at the table and I asked the waiter what vegetarian options there were. He really surprised me by telling me "No. No vegetarians." He also would not ask the kitchen if they could make one plate of something without the meat or throw together some rice and veggies. (EDIT: By the way, as a vegetarian for nearly 10 years, this is the first and only time this has ever happened to me.) Basically, he kicked us out because I did not want meat in my meal. Oh. I guess I could have stayed and had absolutely nothing to eat. So we had to back track and ended up going to Mike's pizza in the Green House. No problem ordering vegetarian there. So no accommodation. Like it's so hard to throw together some vegetables and rice for a CHEF who WORKS AT A RESTAURANT. I felt discriminated against for being a vegetarian. I think it's bad for their business since a plant-based diet is becoming increasingly popular as so many people are looking to avoid heart attacks and reverse their heart disease, not to mention vegetarians who care about animals or just don't want to eat meat. Even an ex-President has adopted a plant-based diet. To be so un-accomodating, not to even offer to ask, was rude and poor customer service. read more

Had lunch here before heading out to my brother's basketball game. I went around 11 so there weren't really that much people but after we ordered. People just started flowing in. The place isn't really that big. I ordered #51. I forgot what it's called but it had shrimp and tofu and some sort of crab things in it. The food took a while to come but mine were really good. A small was able satisfy me. If you have a big appetite, go for the big size. The soup were still HOT when I finished eating which is really a good thing. Their noodles doesn't get saggy as times pass by in the hot soup unlike some others. The service was very friendly. read more

Came here a few days ago and ordered my fave: Mi Quang. They are not consistent here, the first time i came here my dish was made so well. The broth had perfect consistency, spices and flavors. This time the dish was poorly made. The noodles were hard and undercooked and they changed the broth completely. Less spices & too much liquid. Wow... this place is awesome. I came here on Tuesday for takeout and just came back tonight with my parents for dinner. On Tuesday, I ordered the grilled pork spring rolls and a seafood egg noodle soup. The spring rolls were fresh and perfectly seasoned. The seafood egg noodle soup was delicious with big pieces of fish, calamari, crab, and prawns. Yummy! Tonight my parents came on my recommendation. My dad had smelled my soup on Tuesday and been craving it all week. He tried it with rice noodles and loved it. Totally quiet the entire meal, that's how I know he was enjoying every bite. My mother got the shrimp spring rolls, claiming she was not that hungry. It didn't stop her from stealing bites of my grilled pork spring rolls and my dad's soup. I also got the grilled pork and egg roll vermicelli plate. Perfectly balanced base of lettuce, cucumber, carrot, daikon, and noodles. The pork was seasoned super well and the egg roll was piping hot. It also came with three grilled shrimp. It was a yummy surprise. The restaurant was clean and well stocked with sauces at the tables. The gentleman who helped us was very nice and professional. Flavors are authentic and food is good. Restaurant is dated and small. Owner is friendly and efficient. Only complaint I have was they need to add little more noodles for bun bo hue. Has enough meat and veggies, just not enough noodles. Half of the time i order there, everything was proportioned. Seems like a hit or miss at times. Disappointed on most recent visit on take out, my Husband notice a lot less noodles on a large order,..Hopefully they will be more consistent on their portion on this note. I have been here several times now and have tried much of menu. And yes, same conclusion just average. They seem to skimp a little. I get my steak on side and for whatever reason they slice them small so it looks messy on the plate. Their bun rieu is decent and probably the best thing I would get there as the broth is pretty good. Bun bo hue does not seem authentic and the noodles were a little over cooked. Mi Quang is decent dish, worth trying but won't be to everyone's taste. The seem to have new staff who don't really know what they are doing and service still needs work. i always want to try this place because i have just moved to this area. So i went for lunch today. The moment we entered the restaurant!! Omg the air is so stuffy and smoky; its like they are having bbq in the kitchen. They should put some machine to ventilate the air!! We had 50(BBH), 36(seafood sth), 33(combo beef), and 2(deep fried spring roll). The appetizer came after me and my brother finished our meal. The seafood one is really bland. really really bland. The seafood is only shrimp, fish cake and imitation crab meat. The broth is bland. Not impressive. The BBH is not spicy at all. The broth of 50 and 33 is soooooo sweet.... it just tastes weird. It is really difficult to find a good bowl of Bun Bo hue in San Leandro, but this one hits the spot. However, I think their Bun Rieu takes the crown. The tomato soup was so flavorful, and the ingredients were fully packed into the bowl of soup! It wasn't as spicy as I wanted, but I can tell the broth was well made and seasoned. A clean restaurant is a very good sign--and this restaurant is clean. No bad smells, no food on the floor, no flies buzzing around, and they're quick to clean up the empty used dishes. When I order takeout, it's always done in less than 20 minutes and it's consistently the same great flavor for a reasonable price. The owner is very friendly and there's a relaxed, quiet atmosphere. I've been wanting to check this place out and finally got the chance on a beautiful Saturday. Easily found parking and walked up. The place wasn't too packed, maybe an empty table or two. Our waitress and seated us very quickly which was nice. It started getting kinda weird when she came back to take our order and leaned in super close to my girlfriend. Whatever, kinda weird but no biggie. Our food came, we ordered number 62 (Com Thit Nuoung) and number 56 (bun Thit noung, Tom, cha gio) but there weren't any forks at our table. The taste was ok, not spectacular but good enough. I asked for water and our waitress then again leaned super close in one ear and said "yea?", " can I have some more water?" And then she ran away. Came back and just slams my cup on the table. We later asked for boxes and she just tossed them onto our table. I don't think she was rude but I think clearly she was a bit inexperienced and a little overwhelmed. There was a second waitress who was very calm and polite who ended up bringing our check. Overall, not great service but ok enough and food was decent. I'd come back to give them enough try. read more

I've been coming to Saigon House many times I have never experienced this before. I have always been satisfied with their food and service. I'm really disappointed today I found dirt on my cilantro as shown in the pictures it was not washed by the staff this very unsanitary. I recommend to wash every vegetable throughly before serving. I will not be returning to Saigon House anymore it's unfortunate that you've lost a faithful customer. read more

Went here when it first opened and was very disappointed by the portions. However, after seeing more yelp reviews and pictures recently I thought I'd give it another try since they do have Bun Bo Hue and Bun Rieu which are two of my favorites and the location is much closer to hone. Had the Bun Bo Hue and was not disappointed although my friend and I did think that their meat portions were a little small but the broth made up for it! read more

Super nice service from all the staff! We had 2 bowls of pho (one with beef balls/cooked beef, the other with rare beef/cooked beef) and the fried shrimp rolls. The pho came out hot, and the rare meat was already cooked. The soup base was rather mild, so we had to add some hoisin sauce to flavor it up. The fried shrimp rolls were ok, slightly peppery for me. I wouldn't reorder it again. I wanted come here to try the bun cha, since we haven't seen it anywhere but in Hanoi. Alas, it was a soup day so we went with the pho. The great service will bring us back, and I'll try the bun cha next time. It's also around the corner from an ice cream shop! read more

I've been here once and was impressed. My family of 3 tried the pho, bun bo hue and the bun rieu. All very good! I love that fact that the soup comes out pipping hot. I can't stand lukewarm soup. The only thing that was kinda disappointing was that the bun bo hue was all meat and broth very little noodle. Even my 7 yr old son couldn't get full from his bun bo hue. We only came here cuz it's literally a block away from my home. Food is pretty good but I don't think I'll go back because when I asked the owner if they put MSG on there food he said yes, if not the food won't be as good. I was a bit shock when he said that. mSG is bad for me to begin with. Also I didn't like he fact that it's right next door to a bar so people were outside smoking and it was blowing inside the restaurant. Finally was able to try this place after attempting on a Sunday when they are closed. The place was busy. I seemed like the waitstaff is definitely inexperienced which resulted in a lot of tables sitting around and at least one wrong order at the table next to us. Took a long time to get the attention of a waitress to get us a seat. Never got a refill on tea/water. As previous reviewers noted, there are credit card tip issues. A table next to us could not understand why he could not pay for tip by writing it in after he handed his card and it was scanned, since that's how it works at most other restaurants. We quickly paid with cash after seeing his difficulty. The food was tasty and ingredients seemed good. There could have been more meat for the price. One bad ingredient was the tofu in my bun rieu. The tofu was sour. Tofu goes bad fast and often you cannot tell until you taste it. Will try again and see if they improve with time. read more
