One time my order went through but I didn't receive the separate confirmation email before I went to pick up. Despite living locally and supporting the business for many years, they wouldn't let me order in person and come back with my credit card. Bizarre as that is how pickup works, so I felt judged and mistrusted and haven't returned since. Also their hours are good for the workers but terrible for customers. You walk down a few quick steps to enter the restaurant, so it all gives the feeling of an intimate and inviting space. A quick peek at the menu and I knew I was sprinting for my old favorite of Pad Kee Mow. After a short wait, our food came out, and I was not disappointed. I did what I usually do with Thai food: marvel at the huge portion, tell myself it's enough for two meals, then proceed to eat the whole thing. I recently had a free evening in Chicago after a long day of work, and was getting a prenatal massage in the neighborhood. I searched for the closest Thai restaurant on Yelp once I was done, and wandered over to SaiMai. It was a Tuesday evening around 6:30pm, and I was surprised to see the place was empty! It filled up with a few tables shortly after, but for a little while I had the whole place to myself. The interior is pretty no-frills which I'm always fine with as long as the food delivers, which is absolutely did. My friendly server was great, and brought over my order of baby veggie egg rolls pretty quickly. These were great! They were a nice way to start my meal, for sure. The accompanying sauce was perfectly tangy. The star of the show was by far the massaman curry. It was the most flavorful blend of coconut milk, potatoes, peanuts and white onions, and I got extra vegetables added as well. I ate way too much but it felt slightly criminal to let any of that beautiful curry go to waste. The food here is wonderful. We got take out for dinner and decided to try a different place than the usual Thai place. The place was set up only as take-out and delivery that day which works for us. Parking could be a challenge. Our little kids enjoyed their pad see wee which was wonderful for any parent that have fussy eaters. We got Mongolian beef. It wasn't prepared they way I expected which would be more Chinese stir-fry style with lots of onions but this version was still very good. The basil chicken was spicy but the flavor was off and wasn't as great as other Thai places for me. I used to live right at Clark and Armitage and I walked past Sai Mai a handful of times. They don't allow "dining-in" service anymore so I was always impressed they stayed open through the pandemic. One night when I was craving pad thai I went with a friend and now it's been over a year and I haven't stopped ordering since! Whether you order in person at the restaurant or order over Door Dash my food has always arrived quickly. I've never had an issue with an order. SO DELICIOUS!! I love thai food and tried SaiMai Thai for the first time and was SO SATISFIED!!! The dishes are very reasonably priced (especially compared to some of the other places in Lincoln Park), and great portion sizes! I ordered the baby egg rolls for an app. Tasted how you would expect. And then I got the pad siew and panang curry for my entrees (and asked for mild spicy for each). The dishes were practically 2-3 servings each! & both tasted so good! I would definitely recommend both dishes, but the panang curry was my favorite! So flavorful!! This will probably be my to-go spot in Lincoln Park for thai food. Sai Mai is my go-to takeout Thai spot in the area. It's leaps and bounds above the other local Thai restaurants. I've never dined in, however, so I can't quite speak to that experience. I love the lunch deal and would highly recommend if you work in the area. It's easy to order ahead and pop-in to grab your lunch. For $10, you get an entree (a slightly smaller portion), a small appetizer and a small soup. Most times, I've had the Tom Yum soup served with the lunch. It is SO satisfying. The veggie soup was also surprisingly tasty. I've had the panang curry, masaman curry, pad thai, pad siew and sai mai kee mao. Everything has been super flavorful. If you enjoy veggies, I would recommend ordering any of these dishes (especially the noodle ones) as veggie instead of another protein. Had delivery from SaiMai last night based on high reviews in the delivery app. I really wish they all integrated Yelp stars into their apps instead of their own more unreliable ratings. Anyway, squirrel. So SaiMai food was ok. First, the eggrolls arrived soggy, mushy, and not warm. I think the red curry and panang were ok. The pineapple fried rice has very little flavor and the roasted cashews were soggy. Finally the pad keep mao was ok. I'd say overall the food lacked flavor, spice, etc. So part of it is probably the delivery, but not sure. Oh, I did get an iced coffee, which was good. read more

Reliably good for the weekday lunch rush. I order from here pretty regularly for lunch. When I can't decide what I want and get increasingly hungrier, I tend to resort to a noodle dish from SaiMai with extra vegetables. The portions are generous and there is nice wok char on the noodles. The sauce is appropriately dry and savory. Not much I could ask for from standard Thai takeout. I have noticed, though, that the quality is different on weekends. There isn't as many veg even though there is an extra charge, the sauces are more watery, there is less char. Not sure why. But it's a reliable choice to fall back on for weekday lunches! read more

We ordered Pad Kee Mao and Green Curry, which were labeled as spicy, but were not in the least spicy. There was also too much sugar added to both, and the noodles were quite under seasoned. I will not be returning. I wonder if the good reviews are from those not particularly used to authentic Thai food. I'm guessing being in Lincoln Park is a factor. Decent Thai restaurant. I would give this 3.5 but will round up and would come back here again to try more stuff to get a better idea of how more of their food tastes. Split the seaweed salad with my friend which was okay- not much flavor, tasted like how seaweed should, but it did have some weird green liquid on the plate which I don't see very often when I order seaweed dishes. They also added a lot of shredded carrots under the seaweed to make the seaweed look more but in actuality just gave less and had the carrots make up for space. My friend got the green curry which she enjoyed (I didn't get to try it but I would go back again to give it a taste). I had the pad see eiw with shrimp. The shrimp was on the larger side size wise which was nice and maybe it was because I hadn't eaten since 9-10 hours before this meal and I was really hungry which made everything taste good...but I thought the pad see eiw was pretty tasty. And the ingredients seemed fresh too. BUT I will say I do see how other people think it's really sweet (they did add a lot of sugar) and it was rather saucy. After a festive evening of Zoolights at the Lincoln Park Zoo, all we were craving was hot, spicy, comforting Thai food. I placed a carryout order as we were leaving the zoo. They use ChowNow, and you can select the spice level and any extra toppings you want. You can get 10% off using a promo code on their website. The order was estimated to take 30 minutes (just a heads up if you're ordering on the weekend!), and it was ready at the stated time. When we arrived, they were not doing Dine-In, but seems like it would probably be nice! We were in and out in less than a minute with our big brown bag of goodness. We ended up ordering our favorites--steamed shrimp shumai, tofu pad see ew with extra vegetables, and panang curry with chicken. It was a bit of a drive back home, but the food was still pretty hot when we arrived. Luckily I could just pop the noodles and curry in the microwave for a minute or two since I like it extra steamy. The shumai were flavorful--especially with the delicious sauce on the side. The noodles were delectable, and a good level of spice (medium level)--full of fresh vegetables (as a reminder, I ordered extra), eggs, and tofu. The panang curry (which we ordered spicy), definitely had a strong kick. It was also super tart from the lime and rich from the soft chicken and coconut milk. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The portions are fair and if you have self control (unlike me) one item should last you 2 meals. Also, the garlic chicken is incredible... We ordered crab rangoons (nice crisp, lots of cheese filling, somewhat lacking on flavor but still yummy), Penang curry with brown rice (a little greasy but overall very tasty), and chicken pad siew (good portion, decent flavor but zero spice).
