Restaurant was recommended by desk clerk at the Hilton. Ate there on a recent very rainy Sunday night after getting off the ferry from Digby and checking into the hotel. The beer was cold and the seafood chowder was quite good. Also enjoyed the fish part of the fish and chips. Made the mistake of substituting mashed potatoes for chips and they were disappointing--more like a mashing of a baked potato that had been cooked but never ordered. Stick with the chips. The food was excellent ! 5 stars ! Service was so so . We were a table of 16. Very pleasant waiters. I ordered the 42ounce $70.00 steak which I shared , the kitchen split the meal for us as requested. One couples orders did not make it to the kitchen so they were 10-15 minutes waiting while the rest were enjoying our meals. I asked for an extra dipping sauce which I never received. I also had to ask 3 times for a glass of water , the 3rd time a second waiter finally brought me my water after another10 minutes while the original waiter who I asked twice was cleaning tables????? Desert was another 20-30 min wait for 1 cheesecake order. To top it off my bill was not correct. They mixed our drinks with another couples drinks. Although the service was slack the food was delicious and exceptional ! I will definatly return with the hope that the service will be better. read more

SJAH I sooo wanted to love you but my visit was so disappointing! I was dining alone. I entered the pub and walked to the end of the bar where all the wait staff were. No one acknowledged me... for at least 5 minutes they stared st me and I looked at them. Awkward! Finally a brave soul approached and asked if I wanted to sit at the bar. Ummmm nope! A single woman at the bar, not my thing. I asked to be seated at a table so she did. A waitress came and informed me that my waitress was busy (seemed like there was a LOT of staff for a 1/3 full restaurant) so she would take my order. She didn't mention the daily drink special so I asked about it and ordered. A different waitress took my food order and it was delivered by a third waitress (the one who was busy). I was hoping for lobster but there was ZERO lobster on the menu. Their website says their menu changes daily. That can't be true. The menu I got was the same one in the window outside and on their website. I ordered the steak frites but with mashed potatoes. When delivered it was a plate of 60% mashed potatoes, a tiny (supposed to be 6oz but looked like 4oz) steak and a few greens. Not a great start but maybe it'll be delicious. Nope. The potatoes were watery and had no seasoning. The steak was just ok and the greens were dressed plainly but they were ok. This was a $28 plate! I saw the chicken fingers and chicken wings and they both had multiple sauces. Why no flavor on the steak plate??? I chose this restaurant because of the great reviews. It definitely was disappointing and I regret not spending my $ somewhere else. read more

My husband and I stopped in at the Ale House around 5 on a Sunday night. We found somewhere to sit immediately and were well attended to by Lindsey. I throughly enjoyed the apricot wheat ale that I had and was impressed by the number of Canadian beers they had on tap to order. I ordered the mussels and fries and they were so good! Sumptuous bacon and garlic broth with a large number of mussels. The fries came with gravy which was good, but i think I might have preferred bread instead of fries with the meal so I could soak up that delicious broth!! I wanted to drink it from the bowl when I was done. My husband ordered the buttermilk chicken fingers and fries. The chicken was tender and juicy and had a great flavor. We had the White chocolate panna cotta with peanut mousse for dessert; it was quite sweet and it would have been better with an acidic note- maybe a lemon or lime mousse instead. Incredibly hard to find for us! Was expecting it to be a storefront on the street, but it is inside a little strip mall next to the library. We got seated in decent time, they had to clean a table up even though the place wasn't full at lunch, and got some food to get us through the next 4 hours of driving home. The buttermilk chicken was good, some type of Indian spice inside the batter I think. And lots of fries came with it. I was considering dessert, but we were running out of time on our meter so had to leave. The only time we couldn't find our waitress was when we wanted to give her our checks. Went here on a Staurday night since it was in the Market Square and just a walk from the Hilton hotel. Good service, but a little pushy to order drinks, althought he never told us there were any drink specials that I later saw they have after 10pm every night. We had the shrimp appetizer and onion rings. Both were good. The service was ok, he was a bit quick about taking plates and my friend wasn't done yet, it wasn't closing so i didn't see why there was a need to rush. Not sure if I would return for the shrimp, it was a bit mushy and tasted like it had just been defrosted. The aoili sauce was good and spicy though. The onion rings were seasoned nicely. read more

I was actually very disappointed with the meal and service. The worst thing I think is that there was a hair in my fish taco and Now, I know things happen and the meal was written off but I believe for the price you are paying for this spot they should have been more diligent on what they are serving. I am about 90% convinced my fish taco was then just re heated as it came out soggy. The fish taco was small in portions and the "veggies" that accompanied it again were small in portion and just soaking in butter. My parter was very impressed with the fries he received and an abundance of them but the club house sandwich was not worth 20$. He also ate his meal mostly cold waiting for my meal to come back and therefore kinda ruining the whole "let's eat together". I'm sorry but this spot is just not worth the price or hype it receives. Again... for the price the company is dishing out.... hair should not be included in a 18$ fish taco meal. (Note it was a lunch special and was only 10$ on special) read more

After a long drive from Nova Scotia to Saint John I came in for a simple dinner and a drink which turned out to be one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had with really fresh sea food. However what made my experience truly exceptional was the server. Alisha was not only the most attentive and proffesional server I ever had but went above and beyond when the kitchen wasn't able to accommodate a meal for my puppy. She went all the way to Tim Hortons to ask them for turkey so my little guy could have some food. She also really surprised me with her extensive knowledge of the beers and after talking about my preferences for a little bit she picked out a flight so good that I couldn't decide which drink I preferred more. I would highly recommend the SJAH to anyone and make sure to ask for Alisha for an exceptional service. read more

We began outside, then moved inside due to the cold, then asked to move to a better time--all along our servers were accommodating and warm. The food was good--grilled Caesar excellent, fish and chips okay, but not great. Beer choices and Canadian wine selection worth the visit. Went Saturday July 16, 2017, sat upstairs. I got the chicken fingers with the kettle chips. Food was... ok. The chicken was dry and for a recipe that claims 14 spices, surprisingly tasteless. Kettle ships were very greasy and not as crisp as I would have liked. Overall not worth the nearly $20 they charge. Cocktails are overpriced to the point that I did not order one. $12! There had better be unicorn tears in those. If you are looking to spend this kind of money there are much better places within walking distance. Try Peppers or Britt's. If you just want alcohol.. try anywhere else in the city. Really. Average cocktail price is between $6.50 and $8.50. This used to be a killer place, with great food. Now, it's just meh. read more

Cataclysmic, unfortunate failure. Service, although friendly, was horrifically slow. When food did arrive, one was wrong, the grilled cheese was inedible (it had clearly sat somewhere for a very long time), and my grilled zucchini "was taking a bit longer than expected". Really? The final nail was the table full of obnoxious, hungover dudes regaling their fellow diners with tales of their previous nights endeavors. Ordered the pub club, burnt charred tasted to the chicken. Spiced mayo was over spiced and the hand cut fries were way over cooked and saturated with grease. We have been to this restaurant a few times and could suggest better places. Service was mediocre at best, very immature and careless waitresses. Seriously, what waitress walks around giving other waitresses those awkward gang style peace signs. Unprofessional!! Second time in three days, returned for food.
