This was my favorite restaurant while traveling to Saint John. I loved the crab dip and wings appetizers! My love for the Ale House was a bit spoiled on one evening while chatting with a co-worker after dinner a mouse ran across the floor! We promptly gathered our things and told the waiter at the hostess stand that we had just had a 'mouse siting'. His reply was 'Really? Are you OK?'. That was it. He didn't seem surprised at all. Maybe this is normal there. Although I was a bit disappointed I did go back because there weren't alot of options if I wanted to stay in the Brunswick Square/Marketplace indoor area. Really gone down hill. Used to have a great selection and fair prices but it has all changed. They tried to upscale the place and charge way too much now. I'm not a seafood lover and almost all apps were seafood based. We were given a gift card and glad we had it as it came to over 100$ for 2 people. Our small group recently had dinner here based on the very close location to our hotel and the good Yelp reviews. We were not disappointed in the restaurant or the food. I would normally give a place like this 4 stars, but knocked off some rating for prices that seem out of line for what you get. So the details: This place has a fantastic location right on the harbor. They have outdoor patio seating and indoor seating. We sat upstairs at a window table with a beautiful view of the harbor. The atmosphere is casual elegant, modern gastropub. You could feel at ease here in shorts, jeans, or more dressed up. Service was good, attentive, and prompt. Our server was a very low-key guy...I kept thinking he needed a shot of espresso to give him a little boost. The beer, drinks, and food were also all very good. I had the buttermilk chicken fingers and fries; very tasty, not at all greasy, something I would certainly order again. However, the price was quite high for what was essentially chicken tenders and fries. Around $18 I recall. The other members of our group also enjoyed their meals, but again everything was priced just a bit high for what you get here. Even the dessert we shared was really good...but $8 for a small slice of cake? I suppose one is paying for the location and ambiance. And I've certainly paid a lot more for a meal (and would again for a truly fantastic meal). My problem with the prices is that they are just a bit too high all other factors considered. But, we did enjoy ourselves here, had a very good meal, but would likely try other nearby places before going back. read more

Living beyond their means ... Quality has suffered for the appearance of their restaurant. Prices have gone up and they nickel and dime for everything. To top it all off they've got paper cups to serve their dips and ketchup like a cheap diner. I like the atmosphere and look but clearly they didn't have the funds to pay for those updates. The Ale House is pretty consistent all around. The food is good, but not quite as good as it thinks it is. However, it is always reliable. Most of the staff is good although they could be a bit more attentive and there is one waiter that is pretty awful. The appetizers are a good size and the specials are pretty tasty as well. The only thing to stay away from the is the prime rib sandwich. Several of my colleagues have tried it and it is ALWAYS too salty. You won't go wrong bringing a big group here as there is something for everyone. I would really give it 3.5 stars if I could. read more

We dined outdoors here on a mild, breezy evening and enjoyed the harbor atmosphere, good beers, friendly service and decent food. We wouldn't recommend the food too highly, but we found it pretty good (overpriced but tasty lobster roll, good if unexceptional chicken) and just fine if your expectations aren't too high. That said, there's a terrific beer list with lots of local brews (we were fond of the Picaroons) with seasonal selections. Our servers were very engaging and attentive, and there was great pleasure in just enjoying the al fresco dining experience overlooking the harbor. SJAH is just steps away from the Hilton Hotel and the underground parking lot for the harbor area, making it convenient for just about anyone in downtown Saint John. read more

I'm sure there's a reason that SJAH offers a lobster roll that costs $36, but no reason could induce me to order this lobster roll...unless it comes stuffed with 12 toonies. I stuck to fish and chips. To be fair, I wasn't disappointed. The fish was fresh and the fries were pretty good. [Back in the old days, I used to like to drink Country Club and fry catfish. My built-in excuse for poor frying technique was Country Club. it's a built-in excuse that only goes so far, though. How many times can you really serve your signature dish while saying, "sorry this sucks; I've had too much of this soon-to-be-discontinued malt liquor that I can only find at the dusty Polish grocery"?] SJAH's version, as I said, is far from a disaster. But I have a feeling that hotter oil (maybe cleaner, but I don't really want to know) plus colder batter would push it over the top. Fantastic food, beer and service. We sat at the bar on a Friday night. The bar had live music in the corner and progressively got busier. We were told this was the spot to be and it proved to be true! They had tons of beer on tap and most we tried were delicious and strong. Beers range from 8-10 bucks Canadian. My friend got the mussels with fries and it was a super generous portion of both for around 16 Canadian dollars. We witnessed among the most gigantic and impressive flights ever. It looked to be a flight of roughly 40 beers! It's also connected to a bunch of other bars and restaurants right on the water so it's easy to jump around. Got off the cruise ship looking for a beer, fish and chips and found this gem of a restaurant! The beer batter was crunchy and the fish moist. The chips were thin cut and crunchy. The beer was spot on and a good pairing with my meal. Worth a whirl for sure! read more

What a disappointment! While I enjoyed the Foghorn IPA, the service was so slow that I only enjoyed two. Ironically, we waited over an hour to learn our lunch order was "missed" and then waited an incredibly long time for a second round and then the meal. While the pub burger was served rare as asked, it was covered in sauce, lettuce, and pickles despite my request for simply raw onions and a tomato. Furthermore, the meat was so finely ground and compressed and so lacking in flavor, I felt like I was eating a lukewarm Styrofoam biscuit. I like St John as a concept (oldest incorporated city in Canada) and I enjoyed the beer but the food and service was so disappointing. PS My companion ordered the chips as advertised with cheese, sour cream, scallions, and bacon. Never had so few accoutrements been advertised as so much. It tasted like bland chips doused with a confetti of light flavorings. I think I should have spelled light as lite. Lite flavorings. Oh well. read more

I took a group of employees here for lunch and all the dishes ordered looked very good. The clam chowder was none like I've ever had anywhere else. It has clams, scallops and lobster in it along with potatoes. I ordered the haddock fish and chips, I could swear that they cleaned the haddock, skinned it, removed the head then battered and fried it. These were the largest fish and chips I have ever seen. Good but not great, I have gone here for Business many times after being over ruled. I think every time I have gone my first attempt at ordering an item I am told they are sold out at early lunch or don't have the item anymore. I guess its good they stay fresh but that seems to happen a lot. The food overall is pretty good and the patio is nice in the summer. I was pretty unimpressed when I ordered water with my meal and was told that since they distill it I had to pay a dollar. That was dumb, just factor that in to the price of things pinching a penny like that to the customer looks bad. read more

If I could leave no stars I would have. I sincerely hope that the kitchen or head chef read this because this was by far the worst food I've have in a long time. It was our last night in St John and when we looked up restaurants SJAH came highly recommended.... It started when we ordered, it was a Sunday evening so you'd hope that for a weekend dinner they would be able to actually offer everything on the menu however this was not the case. 80% of what we tried to order was not available (including a 45$ lobster roll). Our waiter suggested two dishes that were available and were also "fan favourites". I don't know who would be fans of these two items as they tasted like I had just unscrewed the top of the salt shaker and drank it. We ordered the beet salad which was great... mind you it's kinda hard to mess that up... but then we had the buttermilk chicken fingers and fish cakes. There was so much salt in both these dishes that we couldn't even finish our meal. Nor was there anything to cut the salt flavour on the dish. Even the sauce served with the chicken fingers was overly salted. I had also ordered a Moscow Mule which pretty much tasted like lime cordial and ice. The restaurant is wonderful, staff is really polite and proper. The area around is not the best though, a lot of homeless that hang around outside, but they have a wonder ful stage outside that has something going on every single day in the summer! read more

SJAH I sooo wanted to love you but my visit was so disappointing! I was dining alone. I entered the pub and walked to the end of the bar where all the wait staff were. No one acknowledged me... for at least 5 minutes they stared st me and I looked at them. Awkward! Finally a brave soul approached and asked if I wanted to sit at the bar. Ummmm nope! A single woman at the bar, not my thing. I asked to be seated at a table so she did. A waitress came and informed me that my waitress was busy (seemed like there was a LOT of staff for a 1/3 full restaurant) so she would take my order. She didn't mention the daily drink special so I asked about it and ordered. A different waitress took my food order and it was delivered by a third waitress (the one who was busy). I was hoping for lobster but there was ZERO lobster on the menu. Their website says their menu changes daily. That can't be true. The menu I got was the same one in the window outside and on their website. I ordered the steak frites but with mashed potatoes. When delivered it was a plate of 60% mashed potatoes, a tiny (supposed to be 6oz but looked like 4oz) steak and a few greens. Not a great start but maybe it'll be delicious. Nope. The potatoes were watery and had no seasoning. The steak was just ok and the greens were dressed plainly but they were ok. This was a $28 plate! I saw the chicken fingers and chicken wings and they both had multiple sauces. Why no flavor on the steak plate??? I chose this restaurant because of the great reviews. It definitely was disappointing and I regret not spending my $ somewhere else. read more
