Every dish was incredibly unique, featuring exquisite flavors that truly "dance" on the palate. Squid (5/5): Cooked to absolute perfection, it was bouncy, chewy, and paired with a sauce that tied everything together beautifully. Steaklette (4.75/5): A fantastic dish. The sauce was once again the highlight, and it paired perfectly with the potatoes. Saint Julivert has been on my list since the moment it opened and I don't really have a good excuse for why I only visited for the first time last weekend. I told our server this when she asked if it was our first time dining here and she found it similarly puzzling. That said, this sentiment is one rarely expressed these days, as Saint Julivert's longevity puts it in what I'd imagine to be an exclusive, highly coveted class of restaurants that have stood the test of time in the face of changing trends, the pandemic, rent, etc. And perhaps more importantly, it has stood the test of time *and* maintained its high level of execution and quality. Saint Julivert is a neighborhood spot as memorable as it is unassuming. We came here at around 7:30pm on a Saturday night. I live quite far from Saint Julivert which is the main reason I hadn't gotten here before this past weekend. Luckily, a friend who recently moved to the area was having a party, describing the offered fare as "drinks and light bites" -- code for "not sufficient for dinner" and an opportunity to find a fun restaurant nearby to try beforehand. Walking up to Saint Julivert was a bit of a thrill for me -- both because of how long it's been on my radar and also because it's nestled on a block that otherwise seems completely residential. The space itself is much smaller than I imagined, very cozy, friendly, and down to earth. We had, in my opinion, one of the best seats in the house, which was a pair of high tops by the kitchen with loads of space for folks (read: us) who like to order a bunch of smaller plates to share. To start, we got a round of cocktails. I had to go with the Kanpai Martini (vodka, gin, shochu, cap corse, guindilla), as I pretty much always start with the martini if one is featured on the cocktail menu, and my partner got the Puerto Escondido (mezcal, beet, grapefruit, jalapeño) which is a super tasty spicy mezcal marg variation. I then tried the Diamond District (mezcal, persimmon liqueur, cocchi americano) which is a variation of one of my other go-to drinks, a white mezcal negroni. No complaints here. Food-wise, we obviously leaned into the seafood here heavily. Tried to sample as much variety as possible and I'd say we did a pretty impressive job. We weren't able to finish everything but we tried our very best. Truly everything was exceptional so my usual letter grades aren't all that necessary because it was As across the board. Eats, below: Amberjack w/ tomato water, crispy shallot, shiso oil Ideal first dish, definitely had some amuse bouche qualities, being both light and bright. The fish was incredibly fresh and the concept overall with sophisticated with use of texture and flavor that was impressive in its subtlety and execution. Chicory Salad w/ blue cheese, walnut, persimmon, coffee cider vinaigrette Our one veggie of the night and it was well worth our while, fresh winter greens with that tried and true blue cheese/walnut combo made unique by the coffee cider vinaigrette which emphasized the sweet and earthy notes of the dish and brought everything together beauitfully. Wild Shrimp w/ salted kumquat, poblano pepper, pomelo If I had to give an award to most unique of the night, it would have to go to this dish. I've had a dizzying amount of seafood over the years and I've been lucky enough try to a lot of different types of things in a lot of different types of ways and this one stands out. Something about the flavor and texture of the mostly-raw shrimp with the delicate and aromatic citrus elements. Just impossibly fresh, bright, and delicious. Octopus w/ pipián verde, roasted tomatillo juice, cucumber, serrano A preparation I'm used to seeing served warm but I enjoyed it cold just the same. The overall flavor profile was predictable but the elements contributing to it were less so. The green mole was delicious and overall this dish was a perfect bridge between the lighter and the richer, a segue so perfect it was as if it was divinely ordained. Squid a la Plancha w/ pine nut, maitake mushroom, tinta, poblano The first of two warm dishes we ordered. A nice complement to some of the lighter dishes we had earlier in the meal that were more aromatic/vegetal/gardenia vibes, this dish was earthier, more umami and grounding. Jerked Hamachi Collar w/ mango-pickle mayo, lime Hard to finish with this because it was probably the richest of the dishes and we were already somewhat full by this point, but I ate as much as I could because it was just that good. The mango-pickle mayo was just sublime, the fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned beautifully -- altogether a playful and powerful way to end the meal. read more

We made a reservation for two for around 530pm. The restaurant was small, intimate and wasn't packed with a steady stream of customers throughout the evening but never at full capacity. It was August and surprisingly the tap water was not refreshingly cold. I should have asked for ice next time. The menu is small but seafood heavy so stay away if seafood isn't your jam. Portion size was on smaller size with steeper prices but the food was good and unique. We shared a watermelon salad, hush puppies, octopus crudo, fish pie and the steak. The octopus was fresh and the fish pie was very unique. I would come back again with a seafood friend to try some of the other dishes. read more

We were excited to see they have been given a "Bib Gourmand" rating with Michelin and found the food and cocktails we had lived up to that standard. We very much enjoyed the whipped Mackerel which tasted like barney greengrass whitefish salad on crack - creamy, smooth and with a hint of spice to it. Next up was the delicious and fresh Amberjack which was seasoned nicely and dressed a yummy tomato broth. Followed by the Octopus, which again was fresh, and super tender with a nicely seasoned broth. We also had the Jerked Hamachi Collar which was super delicious. Well seasoned and highlighting the tasty delicate fish meat there. We then had the Squid a la Plancha which was cooked well and came with some very tasty sauces. And last but not least the Steak Babette with potatoes. Perfectly cooked. Really lovely and tasty sides of coconut creamed spinach and potatoes. Really really excellent. We also enjoyed a few cocktails: Kanpai Martini - with vodka and gin, a bit in the sweeter side. Super smooth. Vermilion Verse - gorgeously dark brandy cocktail. Sweet and tasty. Acacia Golden Negroni - a nice spin on the classic. Didn't have that heavy Campari/grapefruit flavor, and instead has Mezcal and chartreuse. Gold Rush - excellent and refreshing bourbon drink - shaken and tasty! Staff were all friendly and accommodating, and our table was quite spacious and comfortable considering the slim size of the restaurant. This was one of my top dining experiences in Brooklyn Heights with bf and my daughter. The neighborhood is so chill and peaceful compared to the rest of NYC and Brooklyn. We ordered 9 dishes off the menu and a bottle of French Chardonnay that was excellent! I was there last Wednesday, 10/16/24 and should have taken notes about each dish. The bill was over $300 but so worth it!! It's definitely a must do!! Every gluten free fish dish is exquisitely prepared and delicious. The octopus and ceviche were my 2 favorites! I went to this small charming wine bar which primarily serves seafood earlier in the evening. I live pretty close by but I've always been hesitant to go here as I'm not the biggest fan of either of their sister restaurants being La Vara next door or Txikito finding both of them to be a bit pricey for the quality. While this place does match the price point of those two spots, I would say the food quality here is a bit more worth it at least from what I ordered and I just enjoyed my experience more here in general. I sat at the bar and while I usually would find bar seats uncomfortable, these seats were nice and plush with a back. The bartender was very friendly and she gave good recommendations. To drink I went with a mocktail/NA drink which was the Mountain Dove for $14 with lapsang cordial, grapefruit, and jalapeno. I wasn't originally planning on getting a drink but as I'm a fan of lapsang souchong, a smoked black tea, this sounded very tasty and it was. The drink was nice with some smokiness and some sourness from the grapefruit reminding me of a paloma (though with mezcal instead of tequila) along with a bit of spice from the pepper rim though I wouldn't minded a bit more spice. As the waitress recommended as I was hungry, I got three dishes consisting of one dish from each part of the menu. From the snacks, I got the Whipped Mackerel for $14 with Piri Piri, dill, and grilled sourdough which was easily my favorite dish of the night. The fishiness from the spread paired well with the mixed spices (I believe I tasted paprika and a few other things) along with the bit of heat from the piri piri pepper which was very tasty when paired with the bread. Shoutouts also go to the outstanding sourdough. I'm unsure if they bake it there or get it from one of the local excellent bakeries (as Caputo's and Mazzola are both nearby for bread,) but it was perfectly grilled with an excellent texture. From the chilled selection which has the raw fish dishes and the salads, I ordered the Wild Shrimp for $21 which is listed as raw-cured with salted kumquat, poblano pepper, and pomelo. The presentation was pretty and the fresh shrimp paired well with the fruits which added some extra textures and a bit of sourness due to the pomelo and a mild sweetness from the kumquat. The broth the dish was in had a subtle sourness all around but not too much. The bartender said the dish was Thai inspired though I wouldn't exactly agree with this as it lacked heat being just a very solid raw fish dish which was on the sour and sweet side. It was a bit pricey for the number of shrimp you get but it was still tasty but was probably my least favorite overall at the same time. My main was the Cod Pot Pie for $26 with sweet and hot pepper sofrito, curry leaf aioli, and aji vinegar. The small pot pie was on top of a sauce and there was another one on the side which had a slight mustardy tasty though this could have been the curry leaf aioli. The dish had nice spices presumably from the sofrito and there was plenty of meaty cod inside and the pastry was buttery with some crispiness. This was very tasty overall and was a pretty filling main dish though I do wish it was a little bit larger for the price point as it's cod and not some fancier fish. Overall, I enjoyed my pricey but tasty meal here. I did get fish however and cheap fish dishes don't tend to be good so some of the price point is expected along with being in Cobble Hill. I have La Vara as a mid 3 and Txikito barely a 4 so this spot gets a a bit above that at a 4.2 though if I go back here. read more

My boyfriend and I made an outdoor reservation and ordered: + Puerto Escondido cocktail + Oud absolute cocktail + Sorullitos (hush puppies) + whipped mackerel + squid a la plancha + Cod pot pie + Amberjack The Puerto Escondido was the better of the two cocktails. Another restaurant where the appetizers were so good I wanted to order 20 more but then the entree was just not it. Walked in for a solo dinner around 7pm on a weekday and the restaurant had a lot of seats open. I sat at the bar and ordered the Wild Shrimp, Shiso Taco, Cod Pot Pie and the Blue Valentine Cocktail. I thought the wines they offered by the glass was a bit limited in choice so I went with the cocktail (it was fine nothing fancy or interesting to write about). The Wild Shrimp and Shiso Taco were 100000/10! So. Damn. Good. I do love raw seafood of any kind so I'm a bit biased but the seafood was fresh and the flavors/toppings went so well together. I want to come back just to order these. I didn't feel full so I decided to order the Cod Pot Pie and this is where my dinner turned sad. It came out in a timely manner but it was dry and lukewarm. For $26 I should have ordered another dish from the 'Chilled" section and I would've been so much happier. Cute place to get seafood but don't recommend the Cod Pot Pie. read more

Saint Julivert is a seafood lover's paradise! The menu consists of all smaller dishes, broken down broadly by cold versus hot. As a party of two, we got five dishes and we were STUFFED by the time the last one came out. But I'm glad we got to try five, because each dish was so unique and delicious in its own way: - The whipped mackerel starter was a nice way to kick off a seafood-heavy meal. Salty, with a little spice from the peri peri sauce, and paired nicely with toasted bread. Solid dish. - The borscht was the biggest surprise! It was a great balance from all the heavy dishes, with a lighter, citrusy taste and some roe and croutons to break up the texture. - The octopus was cooked perfectly, and had a very earthy sauce that left the octopus to lead in terms of taste. - The seafood sausage was my favorite dish. The sausage was amazing, almost like a crab cake in texture and not at all as heavy as the usual sausages made from four-legged animals. It came with a delicious sauce, and the greens were a really nice balance in terms of temperature and taste. Such a winner. - The squid was fine, maybe not as memorable as the other dishes, but still tasty for sure. All in all, an excellent meal in a fancy setting. I'd give this restaurant 6 stars if I could! From the service (top notch) to the food (exceptional) to the ambiance (so cozy and warm), they have all the makings of a memorable meal out, especially if you're a seafood lover. To start, we had the whipped macarel (heaven), then the head on shrimps (the best dish that we had there, tbh), the shiso tacos (good), wild shrimp (good), but I must talk about the risotto. Now I'm not normally a big fan of risotto, but their version is simply divine. I highly recommend ordering that dish, and also order the flan -- who knew mezcal would pair so well with flan? Wonderful seafood oriented dinner restaurant. My wife and I had an outstanding dinner here. We arrived around 7 on a weekday and were seated immediately. They appeared to be filled up by around 8, so you might want to consider a reservation depending on the time you come. We started with a daily special - gooseneck barnacles. I've never had barnacles before, so I give it a shot. My guess is that they were cooked in a seafood / tomato broth. The barnacles filled up with a liquid that was delicious. The texture of the barnacle reminded of a bit of mussels and lobster. The flavor reminded me of those two plus hints of crab and crawfish. It was unusual to eat, but I figured out a successful method after a couple. Next, we shared the broscht. It had a mixed Russian style salad in the middle which was I believe was an upscale play on "shubu." The broscht had a silky texture to it. Much more refined than what I cook at home. Definitely not grandma style either. I categorize this one as a "Russian (New)" type of dish. Third item was the lobster tostada. I found this surprising as I felt the peppers were the star of this dish. I believe there were three preparations of peppers: fresh, roasted, and pesteled into a oil. I liked the contrasts of the textures in this dish a lot. The following course was a special for the day too. It was butterflied shrimp with an "XO" sauce. There were two pieces of shrimp and each could be eaten in two or so bites. Quite rich and savory. Fifth course was the cod pot pie. It's a handheld pastry sized pie. A fun and filling item. It came with what I believe was a mustardy sauce. Another item that I don't recall seeing elsewhere so I appreciated the creativity. Sixth and final dinner course was the jerk hamachi collar. I feel like each time that I have hamachi collar that I'm always happy with it. This was no exception. Great flavor from the jerk style seasoning. Fish was ultra tender and juicy. One of my favorite items. For dessert, we shared the far Breton and the mezcal flan. We preferred the Far Breton to the flan. Looked like a small Dutch baby and reminded me of pie. Extensive list of bottled wines. Very nice list of wines by the glass. Good variety and the wine I tried was excellent. I appreciated their curation as I'm not too knowledgeable on wine. Lots of variety in seating. They have a bar, a communal table extending off the bar, countertop spots with some views of a portion of the kitchen, high top tables, some low top tables outside, and an outdoor dining shed. Service was excellent! Super attentive, polite, and friendly. Very knowledgeable about the menu. Very helpful in guiding me on how to eat barnacles. For food, we went with suggestions so started with whipped mackerel, spicy peanuts and amberjack and shrimp. The latter two were really great-the others fine but wouldn't repeat them. We also shared a risotto and uni butter noodles- they were both ok but not as interesting as they sounded or as generously portioned as photo. Zagablione was great but couldn't get a cup of espresso or coffee to go with it...they suggested we go next door to la vara (their other restaurant) and ask for it to go, which we found weirdly unaccommodating- if you are serving dessert, get a nespresso machine at least (or offer to go next door and get it). This is such a little gem! Their seafood focus menu seriously stole my heart. 4 of us got to sample 80% of the menu. Dishes were very creative and had some unique flavors. My favorites among the 14 dishes (including desserts) we ordered were wild shrimp, mussel toast and steak tartare tostada. The succulent shrimp was so fresh and sweet, accompanied by the perfect balanced sauce. The bite was heaven! I went back to the menu and saw kumquat in the sauce. No wonder I felt the Asian essence in the dish. Mussel toast was so unique that don't think I ever had the flavor before. I just couldn't help to make the yummy sound lol. I've had some many steak tartare in my life. Their version was quite 'saucy' but in a good way. It's so flavorful, yet light and refreshing. Had such a great dinner here! We ordered 2 things from each section (snacks, chilled, hot) for 3 people and every dish was a hit. My favorites were the fried shrimp, whipped mackerel, steak tartare, and squid. The balance of flavor was on point! Presentation and textures also smashed it. Decor was really cute and gives an intimate feel. They have "Violet Hour" from 5-6 daily where you can get a half sized portion of one dish from each section for $45. We didn't opt for this since the dishes were already pretty small to begin with, but it could be a good option if you're looking to taste a lot of dishes. A cozy spot in Cobble Hill, Saint Julivert is a perfect wine-bar spot to split small plates at the bar or over small tables. The decor is sparse and modern with creative Art Deco touches. The restaurant itself is quite small, with bar seating at the front and back and just a few small tables. The plates are small, but creative and well-executed. We split the octopus carpaccio and seafood sausage with mushrooms and lentils. The dishes were quite light and not very filling. While it was fun to try new dishes and enjoy the atmosphere, the restaurant is overpriced and not somewhere to go if you're looking for a full meal. read more

I would be doing myself and any review readers a disservice without mentioning the incredible disappointment that was the Iberico steaklette. They didn't ask for a temp, it came out well done. 3oz of beef shouldn't cost 38$ and if you are going to charge that much you need to at least ask for a temperature. The only word I can describe the dish with is pathetic. I understand there is an emphasis on seafood, but if you are going to do something do it right! Situated in a very tree-lined residential part of Brooklyn - a short walk from the subway. Reservations a must. Service was exemplary. Noisy but most tables are not jammed together. We all had cocktails that they do well. The "Puerto Escondido" is a must. The concept is small plates and sharing. Think tapas with a seafood theme. The consensus was mixed as we tried half of their menu and a few dishes were "good" but some were "failures". We shared anchovies, clam strips, scallops, octopus, mussels, stracciatella, hamachi collar, skate, and risotto. Surprisingly a few of the dishes still had food on the plate - not an indicator of large quantity but that no one wanted a second bite. The hamachi and anchovies were not winners. It is hard to identify a memorable dish. With tip damages for 4 was $380. A bit pricey and none of us felt we had a good meal. As I followed a google map to find this place, I walked by a beautiful garden. Across the street from the restaurant is the classic brown stone town houses that you see in downtown Brooklyn. After we sat down, through the big window, I watched sunset light that shined on the buildings and flowers in the vase glowing in the light. It was a beautiful and peaceful memory of summer night. If you ask me if I like raw fish, I'd say no. But here, as with Le Bernardin, everything is delicious. I actually crave one of their simplest dishes--whipped mackerel with toast. And the clams. And save room for dessert because they are sublime. read more

Hours are actually 5-9:30 on weekends (not sure about the rest of the week). The bartender, Anna, was amazing. She provided excellent service and was extremely knowledgeable about their wine and food selections, so I felt guided in my decisions during my stay. The sweet potatoes were delicious (I did not know sweet potatoes could taste so good), and the cocktail Puerto Escondido was so refreshing without being too summery. I also tried the Amberjack, something I wouldn't have chosen normally since it is basically nigiri, but it was DELICIOUS. 10/10 great experience, I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice dinner out.
