I had the crispy duck curry with glass noodles instead of rice and found it to be amazing. Others didn't understand the chewiness of the duck, but I expected it, since it was "crispy". Sakhuu is a cozy neighborhood Thai restaurant with a cool ambiance. We came here for a weekday lunch on a beautiful day when they had the patio doors open which make it feel wonderfully open and airy. They do have a very limited amount of patio seating but you'll have to get there early to snag a spot there. I would say that the Pad See Ew with beef is a little bit better at Asian Mint due to better meat quality but the lunch special makes this place worthwhile. We had crab Rangoon and fresh shrimp spring rolls for appetizers. Both were very good. The crab Rangoon was crispy and stuffed with a very tasty filling. For main dishes, we had Rad Naa (with chicken), mussuman curry (chicken), and broccoli stir fry (tofu). All were tasty. The veggies were fresh and plentiful with a nice mix. The noodles were not your typical Pad Thai noodles, as it was skinner. But overall it tasted great! The presentation of the dish was on point. On the side of the plate, there was a small pile of crumpled peanuts to mix into the dish. I got a level 4 spice, but it did not seem spicy to me compared to other Thai places. - Green Curry (6.5/10): The curry was pretty solid, but I feel like I have had better though. I believe the eggplant in a green curry makes a big difference, which is what this specific dish was missing. I believe there one small piece of eggplant that we saw. - Crab Ragoon (7/10): Again another great presentation along with the perfect amount of crisp to the wontons. The primary taste to the appetizer was the cream cheese, you could not really taste the crab, which is how I personally prefer it. - Thai Tea (6/10): It came out in a small Mason glass. It's very rare to find a place that add Thai eggplants and fresh green string beans in papaya salad. When I say rare, it's seriously very rare. I love their sauce. The sauce literally hit the spot. Very Lao style authentic and so good! And what's also special about this place is that they use this silver plate dish which you only see in Asian home which made me feel like I'm actually eating food at a friend's house. It had an order of papaya salad in the middle and a wide range of sides from steamed mussels to fried pork belly to fried chicken around it. So when I realized they opened a location near where I live, I couldn't have been more excited. This place is just as good as their original location! Though their food is not as spicy on the spice level as some Thai places, it is so flavorful (and coming from me, trust me, that's saying cause a lot cause I am all about eating food as spicy as possible). A friend and I took advantage of their lunch specials which was definitely the right size to get you full. Everything on the menu thus far has been good. I wanted to love this place, especially after finding out that they also have Lao dishes. But compared to my other Thai experiences around North Dallas, this was just ok and not amazing. I order the thai spicy basil fried rice, the roti duck rolls, and pork tom kha soup. The soup was creamy, but there was something different about the experience. As I began taking more sips, I realized that they were using heaving whipping cream instead of coconut milk. The distinct coconut taste was completely missing from the soup and I defy the line cooks here to tell me they were using actually coconut milk that day. Perhaps they ran out of it that day and had to substitute it? Who knows. The pork pieces themselves barely were distinguishable from chicken, other than their texture was slightly different. The scent of lemongrass was also the most powering thing in the soup, which still tastes good, but there was certainly no balance with whatever else was in the soup. I ordered spicy green curry fried rice but ended up with regular basil fried rice. I base this on the fact that my rice dish was not spicy, there were no green beans, and the rice itself had no green coloring or taste of curry. I certainly was not gonna turn around and ask for my original order cause I was already too hungry. Granted, the basil fried rice here is solid, but I wish they didnt skimp out on the basil or the spices they used. It just wasnt as fragrant or seductive as other rice dishes Ive had. The roti duck rolls here were a real treat! Pillow soft roti rolls with a flaky, crispy edge, tasty duck meat, and the right amount of cheese and cucumber ratio. They load these bad boys up and I was quite pleased with them. Maybe I should focus on the Lao dishes next time, cause so far, Im not impressed with a number of things they do with Thai dishes. read more
