The National Tennis Club (NTC) was formed in 1980 when the original court tennis court, destroyed by a series of arsenic fires in 1945 and 1946, was completely rebuilt. The only thing that remains original is the floor and some of the lower walls, dating back to 1880. Rich Smith it the head pro here and is a fantastic teacher. If you are even thinking about trying real tennis...Rich is a great pro to start with. The court is in the building at the back right side of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. Walls murals and…read moreknuckeheads Hunter Park is an open area tucked away off of Van Zandt Ave. Not an easy place to find and even more difficult to find parking once you do find it. The park is a lot larger than it first looks and has a playground, tennis and basketball courts, baseball field and large fields to run around in. It also has a huge wall that separates it from Van Zandt Ave. This wall has been a magnet for knuckleheads that enjoy writing on walls. Some people must might glorify it by calling it graffiti but it's really just mindless, self centered crap. The town got tired of painting over the graffiti on the wall and decided to find a more permanent solution. So they got a bunch of local artists to volunteer to paint a lovely mural on the 200 foot wall. All kinds of local Newport scenes are on the mural including, beaches, bridges and of course lighthouses. The mural is stunning and beautiful and is a wonderful achievement. Hopefully the knuckleheads that enjoy writing their egotistic nonsense on public walls will have enough sense to be able to appreciate it.

The lighting is also better than at many other indoor facilities, which I truly appreciate. It's not overpriced--very affordable. The female locker room is dated but very clean, and there is a changing and shower room as well. A little-known fact: there's a clay court tucked behind the building that feels especially private. Most importantly, the staff--from the manager/owner, Vinkey (and her adorable dog, Lucky), to the front desk attendants--are all incredibly accommodating. Need a match but don't know anyone? They've got you covered with affordable doubles match sign-ups. I don't play anywhere else nearly as much as I do here--especially outside of the summer season.

There is no annual dues which is awesome and they have an online platform for members to book their courts as long as it's not the day of booking. The owners of this clubs are very nice people and are always responsive to those that attend the club. This club has a large parking lot, so you don't have to worry about finding a parking spot. The locker rooms are clean. They have clinics for people of all levels and leagues on the weekend. It was big enough for the girls to practice on one side and the boys in the other. It had turf on the field. The perimeter had a waiting area (like an ice rink) with some seating and tables and one wickedly cool rocking chair that was repurposed from old barrels. Also there was a guy there with a relacing machine for the lacrosse sticks. Not sure if that's permanently there. So glad that the kids have somewhere to play/practice w/o getting wet and muddy in bad weather.

The pro shop has a small selection of the latest Head Tennis racquets. Coach Phil is known for his great work with teaching kids and his knowledge of the game. The "Mixers" (tennis parties) that happen throughout the season have awesome food (much of it brought by the patrons, kind of pot luck style) and a great variety of friendly and skilled opponents. $10/ person for all you can play all day?
