Narragansett is a town in Washington County, locally known as South County. The population was…read more14,532 at the 2020 census. However, during the summer months the town's population more than doubles to near 34,000. Narragansett is known for its summer recreation and beaches. Fishermen's Memorial State Park, located near Galilee, contains a former military fort (Fort Greene) and a campground. Three beaches in Narragansett that are most famous are: -Narragansett Town Beach is located in the center of Narragansett, though it charges a fee--whereas other local (state funded) beaches charge for parking only. -Scarborough State Beach: The Scarborough Beach Complex comprises two separate areas, the North and South. Each has a pavilion, showers, 75 picnic tables, boardwalk and observation tower. There is a small fee for parking if a spot on nearby streets can not be found. -Roger Wheeler State Beach and Salty Brine State Beach are both located in Point Judith, which is the southernmost point of Narragansett. Both beaches are protected by the breakwater that protects the port of Galilee. The town of Narragansett occupies a narrow strip of land running along the eastern bank of the Pettaquamscutt River to the shore of Narragansett Bay. The setting is really beautiful and if you are not into going to the beach, there's a beautiful sea wall that surrounds most of the beach area and it's the perfect setting for a nice stroll by the ocean. There's a small strip mall located about two blocks from the beach with some parking and a few shopping options and a few restaurants that cater anything from burgers and sandwiches to fine white cloth linen dining. One of the main landmarks is called "The Towers". The Towers is a historic structure located at 35 Ocean Road in Narragansett. It is the only remnant of the Narragansett Pier Casino built in the 1880s. On November 25, 1969, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In Rhode Island, people from South County joke about having to drive "north of the towers" as meaning leaving their comfortable beachy setting ... to drive to Providence, Warwick, Newport, etc.

Kingston and…read moreKingstown The small village of West Kingston used to be called Little Rest, which definitely was a cool name. But in the 19th century some wise arse decided to name it West Kingston. Not a bad name but considering the village of West Kingston is in the town of South Kingstown and there is a North Kingstown lurking nearby, things have been confused ever since. The West Kingston Park is quite nice, assuming you can find it, which is iffy for non local people because they usually end up looking for South Kingston or West Kingstown, neither of which exist. The park is very pleasant and has tennis and basketball courts and lots of picnic areas and places to walk. It's an easy bike ride to the Kingstown beaches and isn't to far from the campus of The University of Rhode Island. An old saying goes that everything in Rhode Island has three names and that frequently proves to be the case. It's a nice little park that is seldom crowded, even in the summer. Perhaps the reason is that nobody can figure out exactly where the park is.

Plenty of picnic tables, grills, trails, a baseball field and more. The children are always fascinated by the sunfish in the swimming pond, and of course the very cool wooden trolls. We all love the trolls. After a fun day at Ninigret we always stop right down the road at The Fantastic Umbrella Factory. Spend a day at Ninigret and you'll want to go back for sure!

The park is very large with plenty of open fields for sports, basketball courts, tennis courts, bathrooms and even an observatory! There is more than ample parking and good signage to lead to Erik Rock and Greta Granite (the trolls) as well as other art installations and even an observatory! We had fun exploring while there, it's a beautiful park, and very well maintained. Erik was easy to find, but Greta though there was signage was a bit more difficult to get to because of fallen trees and low branches. I think they really need to make a more open path so everyone is able to get to these amazing creations

There's a lovely gazebo located at the beginning of the park you can hang out and have lunch. There are benches along the path to chill on. The landscaping is always maintained beautifully . I met with a woman I went to high school with which was pretty nice while walking around the park. Your dog should be leashed at all times. There is bags to clean up after your pup. I noticed one trash can at the beginning of the path so just take note. Very peaceful. Beautiful for photography ! Enjoy!!

A park with a…read morewindmill Wind turbines are popping up all over Rhode Island. A nice and efficient way of taking advantage of the constant wind coming off of Narragansett Bay. Even though the technology has greatly improved over the years and centuries, the idea is hardly new. Wind power has been used in New England for a long time and was frequently used to power the old grist mills. A few of the old windmills managed to survive and Paradise Park has one of the finest examples still around. The mill was built back in 1810 and was used to grind corn and is a great example of a smock mill that has numerous sloped sides. It originally had four vanes but was increased to eight over the years to improve efficiency. The mill stood a bit further north in Portsmouth but was restored and moved to Paradise Park in 1990. The mill is open one day a year in Sept but can be seen all year long in the park. The rest of Paradise Park is pleasant, with a few short hiking trails and benches and places to sit and relax. Some concerts are held here in the summer and the historical society is right next door. There are a lot of parks in Rhode Island and quite a few windmills but this is the only windmill in a park that I know of. A lovely place to see a part of the past that is quickly becoming the vision of the future.

We came in the winter so there was a lot of snow on the ground, but it was still so beautiful and serene. I imagine it's just gorgeous in the summer. There is a small parking lot with very few stalls, but it also has a limited allowed parking time.
