I was very happy each time I went to Sakura-ya when in Queens. I was able to get great Japanese prepared meals as well as ingredients for when I would cook at home. At that time they also had Japanese video rental but I doubt they have it now. For me each time going there was a taste of home. Now that I am back in Tokyo I remember all the great Japanese businesses that I used to go to when I lived in New York City. The cutest little Japanese market that is surprisingly well stocked in all things you'd need for Japanese cuisines and more! The highlight of this market aside from their produce, extensive collection of snacks, ramens, sauces and more, is their very reasonably priced and very tasty hot foods. They have onigiri, fresh chunks of sashimi grade fish, spicy chopped tuna and salmon, grilled eel and other fish, gyoza, as well as rice bowls topped with beef, chicken, and even fish. Small piece of Japan in Forest Hills. This place has the charm of a Quikee Mart yet still has all that you need to make a Japanese feast at home. I've been coming here for my Japanese ingredients (e.g. bonito flakes, konbu, soba, soba sauce). Many hard to find ingredients will be found here. Though HMart has some of the items, they do not carry all. I'd come here first if I'm targeting ingredients for new recipes. Also! They have rice balls, bento boxes, sushi and more! My favorite Japanese market! :D they recently expanded too. They make the best tuna onigiri! (In my opinion) freshly made everyday, sometimes I get there right when they finished making them. Make sure to bring cash though if you plan to spend less than 10 bucks.... since they have a $10.00 minimum when using card. But i still managed to snag a salmon teriyaki and a mackerel teriyaki- both were very good. The premade food was DELICIOUS AND AFFORDABLE. If I lived in New York, I would visit this place daily for their food instead of cooking. The food is made everyday. They have bento boxes, rice balls, fish, and more. Personally love the salmon rice ball, the salmon teriyaki, the pork dumplings, and of course the beef bento. They also have all the Asian snacks. So in my honest opinion, one should always carry a bit of pride in your local area. As the old saying goes - Home is where you hang your hat and lay your head. You should have at least 3 local vendors and businesses in your past neighnorhoods whose regular actions enriched your life experiences immensely. When I was in Corona it was the Ecuadorean food vendors in Flushing Meadows Park, Benfaremos (the lemon ice king of Corona) and the Argentinean bakeries on Corona Avenue whipping up a frothy cappuccino to go with my Alfajor. When it was Elmhurst it was the Pad Thai at Chao Thai, the Laphing at Lhasa Liang Fen, and the Indonesian food at Indo Java. When it comes to Sunnyside it was the platters at Souk el-shater, the Irish groceries at the Butcher's block, and the donuts in Alpha donuts. For Rego Park, it was the shashliks and plov at Cheburechnaya, the knishes at knish nosh, and the samcys at Bella Roza. When it comes to Forest Hills...it becomes tricky. See, Forest Hills have that pocket of anglo-saxon suburban WASPiness at its ForHi Garden core, which dictates certain outliers near Continental Avenue. It has a transitional zone from the Buhkarian McMansions on the 67th side to 71st, and then from 75th Avenue towards the subway yard near the border with Kew Gardens, it gets more constrained and weird. In the meantime, on the south near Metropolitan Avenue it feels more like Middle Village/Woodhaven with mom-n-pop restaurants that I cannot tell are good or not. To pick 3 places representing the neighborhood is tough. I'll say it's Ayahausca, the little Peruvian hole-in-the-wall takeout behind Parker Towers Austin street (it's cheap, surprisingly good and a little obscure), the Bonnelle bakery, which is a very authentic French bakery run by a pair of sisters from India, nestled right up to the entrance of "The Gardens" on Ascan (good carrot cake slices and Plan B if Boulongerie is mobbed), and there's Sakura-ya (one of the very rare mom-n-pop Japanese grocery stores in NYC). So what's so interesting about Sakura-ya? Well, it's a bona-fide Japanese grocery store where the staff greet visitors with an "Irasshaimase" (welcome to our store) and local Japanese lady nods at the staff and gets an acknowledgement in return. It's a smallish grocery store and they try to fit quite a bit in. Condiments, frozen foods, meat, veggies, prepared foods, baked goods, canned drinks and snacks are all found amongst those narrow aisles - the remarkable thing is that just like Han-ah-rehm in Woodside, they are clean and well organized, but unlike the Korean store, they don't have the backing of a massive supermarket chain. Judging by the fact that parking is nowhere to be found (street parking on Austin street? HA!) most customers are locals - apartment or townhome dwellers heading home with their bags or small folding strollers, or maybe residents from the private houses at the garden picking up a few small things for their homes. The aisles are narrow but you'll find some amazing things - like takoyaki pans, 3 types of ochazuke (お茶漬け) mixes, Japanese OTC medication (complete with the obligatory Sato-chan elephant mascot above the register - the sign of a true mom-n-pop Japanese convenience store) and the decent selection of Kabaya trade models that kids might enjoy. It takes about 14 hours to fly from NY to Osaka or Tokyo, and your nearest Lawson's is still in Hawaii 11 hours away. If Sakura-ya disappears the nearest mom-n-pop Japanese grocery will probably be Tominga Shoten in Port Washington (or Taiyo in Woodside), and you won't get to keep the cool neighborhood status. So yeah, come visit often and buy some stuff. Granted, it's not the biggest nor the coolest Japanese grocer out there (that will be Mitsuwa Marketplace in Edgewater NJ and Daido in Scarsdale respectively), but it's the perfect one for ForHi. read more

My eternal search for Onigiri Japanese rice balls has finally came to a halt! Sakura Ya is all about Japanese foods, and hygiene items. A small gem hidden in Queens that sits nearby 75th Avenue E and F trains. Here lies my favorite items: Ramen noodles, Onigiri, Pocky, baked buns. Select items are pricey as they are imported from Japan. The Onigiri and my red bean baked bun are fresh. A small specialty market that the aisles are very narrow, which indeed as mentioned by a previous Yelper, is to maximize space. Sakura Ya reminds me of my past visit to Tokyo, Gunma Prefecture and Nikko in Japan. The company name symbolizes the Japanese cherry blossom flower. So happy I found this spot in FH! We love eating onigiri as a snack or even lunch sometimes and I was pumped to find plentifuls of various kinds at this joint. Prices are very reasonable. I absolutely love this place. Sometimes I walk here during my lunch break to get some onigiri, seafood pancakes, noodles, and some fried crab. I also love to stock up on my beloved shrimp chips here. This is also one of the only places that have round shrimp chips the size of my head (see pic below). A deceiving little Hobbit-tage entry point, upon entering, a half a tennis court sized grocery area awaits on the right. (Too much Nog, not enough Egg) I was purchasing six to ten dollars smallish tin cans of Snow Crab Flake, Mackerel, fabulous Tuna Filets -- no Sardines. Within each and every tin was an experience, the Salomon Roe was quite enjoyable. Seaweed snacks - beware the Spicy, Whole Wheat Breads, quality OUDON noodle bowels, Japanses style Ramen noodles, Dumplings on the fly, to go food. In a warming area upon the non biodegradable white platters and ready to eat - I'm all about the pork and chive. This has to be the friendliest store I have ever stepped into. The staff was extremely helpful even when the store is packed. A lot of the products are not in Japanese but the staff put their best efforts to help you navigate through the store. I have tried a variety of their snacks and hot foods. The snacks are similar to what H-mart has to offer but at a significantly cheaper rate. The hot food is very fresh and tastes amazing, especially for the price. The beef bowl is a must try if you visit. It can get a bit tight when there are a lot of people in the store, however it is still very easy to get through the aisles and find what you need. I am personally not Japanese but have been to many Asian owned businesses, from my experience none have been more welcoming than Sakura-ya. I highly recommend you stop by. read more

The customer service here is beyond excellent. I live in queens but not very close to the store. I usually go there when I'm looking for something specific. So I often call them beforehand and ask if they have the item(s) in stock. If they don't, I will waste my trip. They always check the stock and let me know. If they don't have it, they tell me when it's coming and call me when they are in stock and hold it until I can come by to pick it up. It's not just one or two nice employees, but anyone who answers the phone is equally helpful. I also want to give a special shout out to the man who delivers. They offer free delivery for over $50. I usually go shop myself but one day I ordered a delivery because I was sick. He is supposed to deliver to the door of the building but he brought it to my apartment's door because I mentioned that I was sick when I ordered on the phone. I was just making a small talk and it was totally unexpected. I'm not that regular and he doesn't know me personally. I was really touched. He didn't even accept a tip. Another example; I called them about something special for Japanese New Year Celebration like a few days before. They were sold out but told me that they may receive another shipment next day. They called me and said that they did but in a bigger size. I expected that I had no choice but buying more than I needed, but they offered to divide the contents in three and sold me 2/3 of it. That was again better customer service than I ever expected. The selections are also excellent for such a small store. The quality is reliable. Produces are always fresh. Obviously I'm a fan. I'm glad that the store is there for all the Japanese expats like me and Japanese food lovers. read more

Great store with yummy food selections (hot food + great frozen options) and cool miscellaneous items like stickers, face masks, chopsticks, and bento boxes. Their prices are also lower than surrounding grocery stores for comparable items. I've always had friendly interactions with the staff, and it's great that they provide plastic gloves for customers when you walk in- and a designated garbage can! I love this little Japanese shop in Forest Hills! They have a good selection of Japanese food items and housewares. In an area with a significant Asian population it's surprising that there aren't more Asian grocery stores, but I'm so glad that Sakura Ya fills in this gap. Also as many reviewers mentioned, their prices are reasonable considering that many items are imported from Japan. Walking into the store the register area is directly on your left. Directly in front of you there are a number of ready-made food items like curry, katsu don (fried pork cutlets over rice) and onigiri (rice balls) pre-packed and ready for take out. Follow the refrigerated food section around the left and back walls to find a number of food items, produce, fish and meats, sauces, fresh and frozen entrees, noodles, appetizers, desserts. In the center aisles are snacks and candies, noodles, canned foods, condiments--pretty much everything you need to create many Japanese meals. To the right wall and front of the store are different housewares, household products, rice, beauty products. For a small little shop they really carry a large variety of items. I recently tried their home-made potato croquettes (sold at the register counter) and they were fried light and crispy with panko-crusted on the outside and the inside was creamy and delicious. It's a tiny shop, packed but still somehow organized in it's products. I used to get the tofu salad with some nori (or seaweed) sprinkles with dumplings if I wanted a little something extra! My husband and I came here after reading the amazing reviews to pick up a quick lunch after dropping our dog off at the vet. Very happy we did. I have no hesitation getting hot food from Japanese supermarkets because they're always so good. We got two rice bowls (beef, chicken), and two onigiri rice balls (eel, fried chicken).. all for less than $15. I was so hungry I basically tore open the fried chicken rice ball as soon as we left the store. I guess I'm not great at reading and couldn't really understand the instructions on how to open the plastic on the rice ball so I ripped it haphazardly and hangrily. Couldn't tell if the seaweed was supposed to continue wrapping the rice ball and assumed it was.. and made a mess trying to figure it out (see photo).. but it was a delicious mess. After one bite I considered going back to the store to pick up another one. The fried chicken was so juicy and good and with the warm rice.. so comforting for my empty stomach. My husband was able to figure out the plastic on the second rice ball (and in all honesty it really isn't all that hard). You're supposed to pull down the tab labeled 1, rip off that outside plastic layer completely, and then slip off the inside plastic through the seaweed and the rice layer (and eat it without the plastic, or you can replace the plastic on the outside to hold it with). Second rice ball was also delicious. Realllly considered going back at this point. Of the rice bowls, the beef one was much better than the chicken. It was reminiscent of a bulgogi bowl, but much cheaper! The sauce on the chicken was a little too thick, but it was still tasty. Would highly recommend this place. A hole-in-the-wall, but I would probably travel to the area just to pick up a snack. I can't tell you how many times I've come here to get their onigiri. I've had a lot of onigiri before but Sakura ya's has become a bit of an addiction for me. My favorites are the spicy shrimp tempura, shrimp tempura and spicy tuna. I'm drooling even as I'm typing this review. Their onigiri is so fresh and delicious and I honestly just come in to snag as many as I can before they run out! When you want to have some Japanese food and don't want to spend lots of money, this is a perfect place to go! I usually go to Japanese markets to get some Japanese crackers and snacks. I have been to several markets and they were pretty expensive. But Sakagura ya is cheaper than any other Japanese market so I like to come here. A bag of cracker was 2.99 dollars here but it was 5.60 dollars in other Japanese markets (I know it's hard to believe). One of the best thing is that I can get several small Japanese dishes at a reasonable price!! I bought takoyaki and it was only 2.99 dollars!!! Onigiri (rice ball) was only 1.69! 7 dumplings cost 2.99!! Everything was very cheap! The reason why I give 4 stars is that the staffs were not friendly and helpful. I found some Japanese pastries I wanted to try and they didn't have expiration date. I asked about that and they answered the pastries are from Japan and they don't have any idea when they will expire... How can you eat something you have no idea when it was made?? Pure Japanese in the Hills, that's the first thing you need to know. Though I don't like getting off at 75th Ave., I make the effort to skip Chinese supermarkets and go to a Japanese market instead. Prices usually steeper but I like being surrounded by a maze of Japanese items--it feels like a mini Tokyo. I love this mini market...it's kind of like Family Mart in Astoria but a little bigger with a wider range of snacks and seafood and vegetables. Lots of beauty and skincare products as well, for those who want to be Japanese-beautified--you know who you are. They have a lot of fresh produce, which I don't really see much in Japanese marts and onigiri, which is a little expensive than normal but you won't find it anywhere else in Forest Hills! The crab salad and shrimp tempura rolls are amazing. They run out of them really quick so grab them before late-noon. read more

An authentic Japanese supermarket located on Ascan and Austin st. Once you step foot in the door you have the japanese cashier woman greet you on the left, and then theres a ton of green tea snacks immediately to your right. The store is very small with cramped spaces which makes it hard to get around if the store is filled. They carry sushi fish which I think I'm more comfortable getting from here than my usual H-Mart. Overall satisfied with the nice staff, variety of products, fresh fish, and their rewards card. Get a card and you get a stamp for every 10 dollars you spend. 100 stamps later, and you get 20 dollars off your next purchase. read more

Great little Japanese grocery store tucked away in the outskirts of Forest Hills. They have everything you need; Japanese food, grocery items, beauty products, house products, you name it. What I really love about this place is the ready to eat food section. They have various Japanese drinks like beers, coffee, sodas, etc. Definitely recommend picking up one of the canned coffees, delicious! The star of the ready to eat foods is the onigiri which is filled rice balls covered with seaweed. They are either filled with shrimp, tuna, salmon and even chicken. They sell out quick because they are delicious and very well priced, so come early on busy days to grab these. Other ready to eat foods included rice bowls with teriyaki meats, poke bowls, and a plethora of desserts. Sakura Ya was an unexpected find. It doesn't take long to deduce that its target clientele is ostensibly Japanese. There's a variety of merchandise stocked that doesn't cater to Americans, cramped set-up akin to many a market in Japan, a host of Japanese language ads and flyers on the windows, and a video rentals section. What is curious is its location at the southeast end of the Austin Street commercial strip in Forest Hills; the nearest Japanese population hub is in Astoria; nearby but by no means close. The bigger hub in Manhattan have their own markets to choose from. Yet here it is, and has been, apparently for many years. After finding it incidentally while strolling down Austin Street, I all but scampered inside in delight. This was just a few days after a trip to Mitsuwa in Edgewater, New Jersey, and I left impressed, not disappointed, if there was any comparison to be made. Sakura Ya is a tiny store, but its size is misleading. It stocks up its small footprint effectively. There's an extensive selection of Japanese groceries; not much choice per item, but a far-ranging variety so chances are, if you're looking for a very specific Japanese food item, there will be at least one option sold. There are sauces and spices (yuzu kosho, sweet mayonnaise (not Kewpie!), mirin, ponzu, shichimi), serving-size season mixes for rice and pasta, dried and instant noodles, a variety of domestic Japanese rice, an aisle of candy and snacks, teas, kombu, nori, and dried shiitake, and soup bases. Several freezers hold noodles (including Sun ramen), dumplings, Berkshire mini sausages, raw meat and seafood. A fresh vegetable section has neatly wrapped produce such as eggplants, leeks, shiso, kabocha, and Napa cabbage. Besides food items, there's a small selection of household goods, primarily kitchen-related tools, cookware, and serving ware. Some cosmetics and body care products too. Always fun is to come by and check out the prepared foods for sale. The best choices are earlier in the day, where there can be a variety of bento boxes, meat or tempura rice bowls, cold udon bowls, gyoza, onigiri, salads (seaweed, potato), seafood (sushi-grade fish, ikura, tobiki), oden, and more. Grab one of many Japanese soft drinks to go (less sweet and not carbonated, for the most part). Sakura Ya is a very good small Japanese market. Its location in an ethnic-market scarce neighborhood makes it a gem to have, a must-go for Japanese goods, and an above-average stop for prepared foods. My love for Asian supermarkets knows no bounds. But when I moved to Forest Hills, going to the closest Asian market became a chore! One day, curiosity brought me further down Austin street than I normally go. Low and behold, what do I find? The cutest little Japanese market!!! It was like i found the promised land, I was so excited! Naturally, they have an awesome selection of snacks and sweets. But they also have servings of hot food, like onigiri and unagi. And the quality of their small produce section (specific to Japanese dishes, of course) is beautiful! I love the fact that they give half-portions, like half a head of cabbage, because many times I buy a whole head and end up wasting the other half. And then there's the selection of my beloved dried fish! Although I'm sure my neighbors hate the fact that I occasionally come home with bags full of the stuff, fry them up, and stink up the apartment hallway. But the pure happiness in my tummy dictates that I care not for what they think! Other than food, they also carry household items and I believe, DVD rentals. This awesome little market totally makes Austin street special for me. The other shops around the area are cool but they don't excite me as much as this place does. =) read more

I've been on a mission to hunt down some Green Tea Kit Kat bars. I failed twice miserably...haha...once at Mitsuwa and now again here at Sakura Ya Japanese Market. A fellow Yelper actually recommended this place to me. It's pretty neat inside, it reminds me a little of Hong Kong where they have microwaves inside to heat up your food. However, I feel like they have a limited selections on traditional japanese products. Majority of the snacks I found inside Sakura were similar to the ones I find in Chinese supermarkets. Had they had those Green Tea Kit Kat bars, this place would have been a solid 5 stars...haha. I believe Sunrise Mart in the city would have a larger variety. I am so glad to have this Japanese market within a few minutes walk to where I live. While this store is undoubtedly on the smaller side, every space is utilized very well. It has a huge selection of your basic Japanese necessities plus some. This store carries everything from prepared foods (ready-to-eat rice bowls, baked goods, onigiri) to items you'd expect such as Japanese snacks, assorted ramen (both fresh and the regular dried ones), asian condiments, exotic ice cream (green tea, red bean, mochi), matcha everything (yes, that includes Kit Kat), and a limited but much appreciated selection of fresh veggies and meats. You can also find more authentic items such as shiso, uni, tobiko, and fresh fish for your sushi and sashimi needs! They even have a section for kitchen tools and gadgets, plus even Japanese beauty products! I love coming in here to browse around sometimes just to see what I can find. I frequently go here after my doctor appointments for Japanese pick me ups, such as onigiri (rice balls) and gyoza (dumplings). They make them daily, which is why I only get them here. It's a small store but you'd be surprised by what you can find! I usually pick up small groceries if I'm planning on making ramen at home, and they have most of the ingredients needed in stock. The staff are always friendly, and I'm amazed that they keep the place so well stocked! Came here weekly during the summer of 2013 when I went to the Ivy League tutoring nearby. Whenever I go there, I usually buy cooked foods or mochi. Is a great little store that's just as good as being in Japan. Having just come back from a trip to Japan, it was a pleasure to come back here and find some of those wonderful treats that you can find nowhere else. They're very helpful and they offer a lot of selection of very small space. They offer sushi, sashimi, noodles, rice, tea, snacks, etc. There's so much here that I don't think that you have to look very far for anything you need. read more

i absolutely love sakura ya. it is where i could do all my grocery shopping forever from. the store is tiny and a little tight walking through at times, but what this store sells and the friendly staff that work there outshine it all. If you go earlier in the morning/day, they sell the most amazing onigiri and rolls, fresh every day. they sell ramune and all kinds of drinks and candies, cosmetic products, snacks and fresh produce like bok choi, bamboo, and other herbs. Their frozen foods are varied, and the soups are endless. I've always had very pleasant and kind infractions with the people who work there, and the prices are very good considering how expensive certain harder to find items can be. you can haul a ton of snacks and breads/lunch food, plus drinks for under $30.
