    Takeaway meals
    Hwal L.

I don't know how, but we had such a hard time finding this shop. For anyone who will be going here for the first time, it's right next to SS Natural Market on Austin Street with King Wok in the corner. It's not every day that you have a family-run Japanese grocery store, so we went out of our way to stop here and we weren't disappointed. The shop is not as big as the market next door but the space is just big enough to house the variety of things they carry, from takeaway meals, bowl, and rice balls to produce to teas and side dishes. I'm not familiar with the cost of Japanese groceries so have little point of reference, but the teas we got were priced competitively. There's a minimum spend of $10 for a credit card payment, but the staff were patient and reasonably friendly. I can see us coming here regularly as locals. I hope they stay open for generations.

    Onigiri and hot food

I came on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't crowded. There was fresh, hot food at great prices. Onigiri for $2.49 and Gyudon for $7.49. Sushi rolls from $5-7 with decent portions. They have a microwave to heat up food, but nowhere to sit. They have a kitchen in the back. They have bread and pastries besides typical Japanese ingredients and groceries. The Gyudon was a little salty but was overall good. I'll be back.

Poke Bowl (there is rice underneath)

I love coming here for the prepared foods (and to check out all the Japanese goodies they have). The store is well stocked, and everything is pretty fresh. I see the staff restocking everything. The prices are fair. I usually get the onigiri. They have a wide variety at a great price. The rice holds together well and is packed with filling. My go to is the eel or tuna mayo. I have tried their poke bowl as well, which is well marinated and fresh. I have also gotten some of their hot foods (mostly the seafood - eel, makerel, salmon teriyaki), and the portion sizes are good. Definitely grab a few and try with other people. Bring your own bag! They do put the food in a plastic produce bag to prevent spilling into your bag.

Selection of beautiful & dainty cookies

I came to Austin Street to look around. Found Sakura-Ya and was curious. They have such a nice Selection of beautiful & dainty cookies! Individually wrapped inside the elegant gift box. Also great selection of hot foods! Friendly cashier. I wish they would carry my favorite Japanese tea: The Lupicia brand.

I love how convenient this Japanese market is! Located in Forest Hills, it has a bunch of prepared food, Japanese snacks, candy, and drinks. They also have a section for makeup. I loved getting lunch from here since it was already prepackaged and ready to go. The prices are also very affordable. The owners were really friendly as well.

Refrigerated section with premade and ready to eat meals

This is my first time going to the new location. No longer local to forest hills so my visits are now far and few! The new location is much bigger and feels less claustrophobic! Still a great selection of Japanese snacks, dried and fresh foods. They have already made meals (bento boxes, onigiri, rice bowls) on the warmers, sushi rolls in the refrigerated section and fresh cuts of sushi grade salmon and tuna. What a gem!

    store inside summer 2025

It's been long time since I left a review. They've renovated inside of the store. Hot foods, daily grocery Inc vegetables with decent price :) Japanese food and goods store. It's quite walking distance from train station but, there're many stores on way to get here. So you won't feel it's very far......... a store friendly and good vibes. There's a restroom to use.

Now that's funny! But the mini eggplants were decrepit and turning fast, I bought some deep purple bigger ones for counter balance. One never knows the schedule of incoming, so outside shopping can be hit or miss. Yesterday was a miss, today likely will be a hit although I'm packed to the rafters at home now. Cauliflower, pears, carrots, celery, peppers, strung beans all for under a dollar and a half per pound, the market fluctuates as the product diminishes, giving itself back to nature in death and decay but you'll never encounter that stage on display. The smoked fish display is always my favorite stop, Chubs are $4.99 a pound and they last a goodly while in the fridge, so I bought my usual three. I LOVE that they're perched upon the top of the counter, not displayed behind the glass of a case. I feel more inclined to buy in this scenario, I see they're orange brown eyes and I wonder about their lives prior to landing here. Anyway, I accidentally parked illegally and no ticket was given making this Sunday shopping excursion a total success, minus the baby eggplant.

Rest of the store is well stocked and well organized. I don't buy a ton of meat there, but have bought some. Haven't had an issue but I inspect the meat I buy and check the dates. When I got to the door, someone was coming out and the attendant told me they were closed and that I couldn't come in. I politely tried to clarify saying "I thought you closed at 9:30?" He rudely just said an unapologetic "yeah" without any conversation and just turned the other way silently and locked the door while I continued to ask questions that he ignored. I tried knocking on the window to get his attention and he continued to ignore me. Previously when doing this they have told me the closing time when I go in that way I knew to be out by closing time, which is the common sense standard practice for closing time. The way he gave me the silent treatment and turned the other way when I was just asking a simple question was beyond rude. Stop advertising that you close at 9:30 if you're going to start turning people away from entering at 9:20, and if you are doing this, at least have the decency to give your customers a quick explanation as to why. I've spent hundreds of dollars there every week and I will be going up to NetCost on Queens Blvd now. Terrible business.
