Average piece of grilled chicken in their salad. Cut into tiny cubes for some reason...
    Mark V.

Pricey but large salad with fresh greens garnished with 5 smaller portions of finely chopped toppings with average dressings. Sorry to disagree with many of the great reviews for this location, but honestly I know a good salad when I have one. For starters they do give you a very large salad, although it's $10. The greens they use are very crisp and fresh. They load up your plate with the greens so you're off to good start! Here's where disappointment begins to set in. Next you are to choose five toppings from a giant number of toppings. And you need to do this quickly by the way. All of the toppings are cut into very small pieces and you get one scoop with a large serving spoon. That's fine for things like chopped onions, eggs, peppers. But that's not OK for your main protein like chicken! Also the one scoop of topping really isn't enough for the size of the salad. And also your protein, such as grilled chicken, counts as one of your toppings. And in my opinion one of their servings of grilled chicken topping is not enough for the size of the salad. So you already need to spend two of your five toppings just to get your protein choice. Oh sure you can add extra toppings, at approximately a dollar apiece of course depending on the topping! So here is one of my big problems, the finely diced up chicken for one thing is too small and it's hard to stab with a fork and tends to settle to the bottom of the plate because it's chopped so small. Usually grilled chicken on salads is either in nicely sliced strips, or large nuggets. Not here! Also the chicken was dry and lacking much flavor. My other problem was the salad dressing that I chose. I chose the classic balsamic vinaigrette dressing. They asked me for one or two scoops, I said two because I'm a guy! Now remember I had a double serving of it. The dressing was plain and surprisingly lacking much flavor. It was 2 out of 5 stars. I do have to admit they offer a large selection of toppings, salad dressings, and soups. Speaking of soups, I tried their classic tomato being a huge tomato soup fan. It certainly was rich and creamy and of course I liked it, but it reminded me more of a vodka tomato sauce than a creamy tomato soup. It's a pricey place, but it is a healthier lunch option and they do throw in a nice, delicious piece of bread. There are better places in Freehold to buy a salad with even tastier bread at the same price, however you do get to choose your toppings here.

    Bug in the salad.

I'm so upset, I loved saladworks but freaked out when there was a giant dead cricket in my salad. I was so upset my fiancé threw it in the trash. My mom proceeded to investigate her salad and found an ALIVE crawling insect (pictured). I figured mine could've been an accident but 2 salads? As someone with food anxiety this was a nightmare and I will never order from them again.

Food was perfectly fine, but the prices were extortionate and staff was not welcoming.

It takes about 30 minutes to get your food and even longer to get a check after the fact. Which is crazy because my table was only one out of 3 other tables in the restaurant. A 20% tip is automatically applied to your bill, and then still asked if you want to tip ON TOP OF THE FACT so pay attention to your bill! Part of me thinks the reason the service isn't as good is because they know they're automatically getting that tip, but another part of me hopes that isn't the case. The location is a little further than we would normally travel, but it was worth it. I loved all the farm to table foods they have. They even nicely promote all the partners they use right on the wall of the restaurant, so you know where all your food comes from. Everyone loved their meals! I had the Thai chicken sandwich and it was so flavorful and delicious. It came with a side and I picked baked sweet potato wedges that were really good and so memorable that a week later I am still thinking about them. Other dishes ordered were the chicken salad and strawberry salad which my friends both enjoyed. Our server was very good and didn't rush us as we were just chatting up a storm. The restaurant suggests reservations which are a good idea, especially for dinner. I will definitely be back and can't wait to put Harvest on my restaurant rotation. Sorry no photos this time... the food was just so good and we were hungry!

Tucked away in a small town, you will find a cozy nook to discover American cuisine…read more Brand: 5/5 Harvest is a small restaurant in Farmingdale specializing in New American cuisine. The entrance stands out in this borough, despite its small size. I do think that sign with the wooden background reflected the cozy interior quite well with a homey style. The country décor on the walls also enhances the aesthetics. Website: 5/5 It wastes no time, for it immediately opens you to the menu where most of the items have their own images. I appreciated the minimalistic design where the understandable font provides you with the information. The basic description of the establishment does say that they rely on locally sourced ingredients. Ambiance: 5/5 Normally, dark interiors would not necessarily work for eateries unless they achieve a cozy vibe; which is what Harvest did perfectly. The wooden walls provide a sense of comfort underneath lights dim enough to not offend the eyes but bright enough to see. Despite the cramped space, I did think that the interior fitted the ambiance, along with the smooth country music playing over the radio. Service: 5/5 The staff was quite jovial and patiently explained a part of the menu. We had no issues with our orders. Wait Time: 5/5 I did wait awhile for the meals, though we managed to get our orders without any interruptions. Food: 4/5 I ordered the Grilled Chicken Thai Sandwich with no additional sides, with a free, complementary glass of water. It has ciabatta beard containing grilled chicken, spinach, cucumbers, and Thai sauce. I do not know if the signature sauce is authentically Thai, but I will say that I could barely tolerate the pungent taste and smell. I cannot say whether it is the feature. Every other part, such as the spinach and the cucumbers, definitely complemented the grilled chicken with a juicy taste. The ciabatta bread buns managed to hold their form, even as the contents started to fall off. Worth The Money?: 2/5 I will say that Harvest brand has as much of a highfalutin status as its prices. While the restaurant reflects the New American cuisine, it does not come off as condescending. Nevertheless, I still thought that the limited menu items just do not help with the prices. For the website, I would suggest a list of all the farms and independent distributors that Harvest relies on for ingredients, and to include a backstory about how Harvest began and where the name came from. I find local-sourcing incredibly important and commend Harvest for incorporating this into their business model. Concerning the food, I will say that the Grilled Chicken Thai sandwich did have suffice within the ambiance. The wait time it took to make the meal was appropriate enough. I will say that the wait time did feel long within the establishment, especially when no one else was around. Nevertheless, the service did make the food worth the wait and the ambiance worth immersing in. With all of this being said, would I say that the overall price would bring me back? Not really. Even the complementary water could not win me over when compared to the prices. Prestigious New American eateries tend to have a focus on specific consumer bases, and I am just not one of them. I do not score low on this part out of spite, rather based on my current station and many other people. I did tip the staff and I did have enough satisfaction with the meal. Rating: 4/5 Stars I do not know how Harvest would carry itself into the future, though I can see how it would suffice as a New American restaurant. Recommend To... Anyone with enough disposable income looking for a quiet restaurant.
