I didn't think a turkey sandwich could be completely devoid of flavor until I ordered one from here. Well, that's not fair. You can taste the mayonnaise. Aside from that, not a hint of seasoning. Salt? Never heard of her. Pepper? That's black magic. Celery salt? Now you're just making things up. Not a *bad* sandwich (in that it was edible), but certainly not a good sandwich. And for $12.50, I wasn't about to throw it away. This is a good bakery in the heart of downtown Concord, Massachusetts. Street parking is easy. In October 2020, we sampled 6 apple pies from 6 different bakeries--Sally Ann Food Shop won, hands down. Gorgeous crust, firm apple slices, and a savory blend of spices. 5 stars. In February 2021, we bought another apple pie at Sally's, and it deserved only 1 star--it was actually "apple soup" with a beautiful, tasty crust on top. Quality control appears to be an issue. Sally's is well worth another try, but we were dissatisfied with how drastically different a mere 5 months made in the quality of a classic apple pie. read more

The quality of the food is okay, but they price a bit aggressively. Be forewarned that there's a service charge if you pay with credit card (but who even uses cash these days, especially w/ Covid?). It's a homey type of shop, and perhaps it was the day that I went - the week of Thanksgiving, but the pastry selection was pretty mediocre. Two breakfast sandwiches will set you back $16 - and while the sandwiches were fine they were pretty basic. They make the bread themselves, but they skimped on the bacon. I come here almost everyday for lunch or morning coffee. Of course, with food service industry, it is hard to be on point every single time. I have always received friendly service from Giuliana and even Bill, the owner/ baker who sometimes sticks his head out from his kitchen to say hello. I love that they have different specials everyday so one does not get bored with the same old thing. They offer home made drinks according to seasons - iced lemonade with blueberry syrup in summer, for example. Stand out sandwiches were their specials like Banh mi, falafel wrap and turkey sandwich with stuffing. They even make an awesome grilled cheese sandwich for $4 upon request. I highly recommend their breads and pastries which are freshly made on site with good quality ingredients. When they get busy at lunch hour, just phone in to place your order to avoid the queue. I definitely think that shops like this make Concord a place to visit and stay. I don't even mind that they don't take credit cards as understandably, rent in the Concord centre is quite high which eats into profit margin. read more

Sally Ann has the best tasting cake in the region. It is not as fancy as other places. They do not create as an elaborate decoration as others. But, hands down, if you want a great tasting cake that people will love, come here. The contrast is that most cakes from supermarket bakeries or the wholesale clubs use a lot of sugar to make up for lower quality ingredients. Those are really way too sweet. Fantastic!! I used to get lunch here almost every day before moving. They use the best ingredients possible and the rotating specials for sandwiches and soups are so fun! My personal favorite is their Banh Mi sandwich. Their fresh baked daily bread is incredible too. And their hot crossed buns. And their cookies. And their iced tea... Incredible bakery and sandwich shop. Limited selection of sandwiches focused on their house roasted turkey breast on daily fresh baked bread. Large selection of pastries, cupcakes, cookies and other sweets. Curry tuna fish on cracked wheat is an excellent portion of light yellow colored, curried and very moist tuna salad. Added as toppings are bread and butter pickles, lettuce and tomato. Soft, wonderfully fresh cracked wheat bread is sliced a little thinner than it might be but does a decent job of holding the whole sandwich together. Scallions and chopped celery add more crunch than even the pickles. The BLT is ordered on cracked wheat as well and provides a generous portion of thick cut bacon sandwiches in between leafy bright green lettuce and thickly sliced, sweet tomatoes with a spread of mayo. A salad and soup/sandwich combo change daily. Espresso, cappuccino, coffee, sodas and sparking water are available for order. Very friendly service, cash/check only. read more

My family has been a customer for many years, frequently buying pastries and cookies for staff and colleagues. I preordered a birthday carrot cake to see try one before my party. Dry, dry, dry and tasteless. I returned the cake, minus one slice and explained the problem to Bill. He said it tasted "fine" When I asked for a refund he offered just half of what I paid. Mmm, I should have kept on driving. My only experience here was a negative one. The lady was short with me when I asked the prices of things, though none are posted anywhere. The customers (seemingly regulars) were totally unruly. They didn't have sleeves for hot coffee, or carrying trays. Also, the door pulls in when you go to leave, so you have to balance your sleeveless cups of self-serve hot coffee while getting the door to cooperate. I am not a fan. I will not be back. read more

These folks need to update their website. They claim that fresh bread comes out of the ovens at 9:00 AM every day. They claim that they boil and bake fresh sour dough bagels every day. They claim scratch made baked goods made from the best quality ingredients. No, No, and No. We are from out of town and had searched on the internet where to buy a loaf of fresh bread and a dozen bagels to bring to a gathering in Concord and sit and have coffee and a fresh baked good. We arrived at Sally Anns at 9:15 and we found 3 loaves of day old bread and were told that fresh bread comes out of the oven around 11:00 AM. And no, they don't make bagels. Ever. And they had nothing like a whole coffee cake or anything else suitable to bring to a pot luck brunch ready at 9:15 in the morning. The scones that we bought were dense and heavy as lead and so coated with frosting all you could taste was sugar. There were no tables or chairs and coffee was in a thermos pot, barely warm. I asked to speak with the owner or manager to ask about the discrepancy between what their website claims and the reality and was left standing in the hot cramped store for 10 minutes and no one came out from back to speak with me. I left without getting any answers so I would have time to get to a real bakery (10 minutes away: Nashoba Brook Bakery) to buy fresh delcious bread and other baked goods to bring to the event. Do yourself a favor and drive an extra 8-10 minutes out of your way and skip Sally Ann's altogether. read more

My colleague walked me to Sally's the other day. Given that there is some. Construction going on on Main Street you might not even realize Sally Ann is there. It felt like a magical reveal when we walked in to the sparsely decorated bakery. On the counter they have some fresh baked bread to sample and behind a giant board filled with all sorts of cold and hot beverages. For those of us who need our caffeine to be disguised a bit, Sally's has a nice range of hot milk drinks like London fogs and tea lattes that help the bitterness go down. Last time, I had their spiced mulled cider with citrus. Fantastic! I loved the orange flavor and pulp that takes this cider a little further. They have a full lunch menu as well, but my favorite thing has to be their cookie selection. If you've never liked oatmeal cookies, that's because you haven't tried theirs! They have a few different seasonal varieties and their original oatmeal cookie. But what really takes the cake (ahem) is the s'mores cookie. S'mores. Cookie. I don't think I need to explain how chocolate, marshmallow, and graham come together in this amazing cookie that will make you forget you promised to skip dessert. Right in the center of Concord, Sally's is convenient and easy to pop into. One of my favorite locations in town! read more

I have been going to SallyAnn's for 18 years. One of Concord's gems. Ignore the dated window display (chalk it up to an owner/baker more interested in his food than his decor) and make Sally Anns' your next stop for coffee and a scone or a great takeaway lunch. Standing at the counter you can peek into the kitchen and you will find Bill (owner/baker) hard at work making any one of his delicious baked good from scratch. Not only does Bill make the BEST sandwich around, but it is served on his signature bread that is hot out of the oven when I get my coffee in the morning. My family always requests Sally Ann's cake for birthdays, communion, graduation, etc. The chocolate cake with fresh berries and fresh whipped cream topping is to die for. My favorites: Veggie sandwich, any flavor quiche, cracked wheat loaf, bran muffin and of course their cakes. read more

I had the strangest experience there yesterday. It was actually unsettling to the point that after thinking about my own behavior and that of the person behind the counter, I still could not make sense out of it. I used to live in Concord and adjoining towns and through all those years Sally Ann's was a reliable, welcoming bakery, with consistently tasty baked goods. The place wasn't designed for eating in, but it was a pleasant space wherein you could wait for your order. I walked in at about 10:30 Wednesday (yesterday) morning. There was no one else there. I was surprised to see how bare bones the place was - no decor at all, evidence of a removed display case (floor and wall unretouched ) and no sign of renovations to come. Fine, whatever the interior, the baked goods were what mattered. I was looking for a scone, and I remembered that their scones had always been good, old fashioned versions of the classic. A blonde woman came out from the back and stood, expressionless, behind the counter. I didn't think about it until later but she neither greeted me or looked at me. I asked her the price of the scones. (Nothing in the baked goods case is marked.) She said nothing. After a polite pause, I asked again. "Excuse me. What is the price of the scones?" No response. At that point, still not saying anything, she picked up a waxed paper in preparation for selecting an item from the case. " Plain or raisin?" she said, still not making any particular contact with me. She still wore a flat expression on her face. By this time I was getting slightly exasperated, but I remained polite, and asked again, "what is the price?" At that point she looked at me, still with a very flat facial expression, and said, "oh my goodness." At this point she was staring at me. Another older woman appeared halfway in the doorway from the back, and stood staring at me too. They both had a flat expression and showed no particular emotion. However, I had the unpleasant and downright creepy impression that I had just behaved like the rudest customer ever, or had possibly done something as shocking as demanding that they empty the contents of the register into my waiting hands. The situation was so strange and unsettling that I became both flustered AND indignant as it dawned on me that they were holding me responsible for some highly egregious behavior. Yet throughout, they said nothing, the flat expressions never changed, but the hostility was palpable. It was awful and totally unsettling. I said, quite flustered and stumbling for what to say to clarify and also defend myself over a totally surreal situation, "I don't understand...why did you say 'oh my goodness' to me? I don't understand. I was simply asking the price of the scones." My tone was frustrated, I'm sure, but I'd been caught so off guard and my behavior in no way warranted their reaction. The blonde turned away, and said"2.50. I am going in the back, if you need help." Again, with no facial expression, nor readable emotion in her voice. At that point I left. And I will never return. I am human, like the rest of us, and we all have our moments. But I can say, after a fair bout of self-reflection, this was uncalled for. I am a soft spoken person, and I try always to be fair and cordial to anyone working in a retail setting. If I've been out of line I will own it, and take responsibility for it no matter if it feels awkward or uncomfortable. I'm not a doormat, but I like to keep the peace too. I've worked in a variety of retail settings dealing with the public and I appreciate how hard it can sometimes be - and how much it means when a customer is cordial and respectful out of real courtesy. The folks at Sally Ann's defy any explanation for that very odd, inexcusable, and unfathomable behavior. read more

I'm not sure when everyone got on their high horse about a bakery that you can't even sit in needing a renovation, and therefore is grounds to lower the rating of a wonderful bakery nonetheless, but y'all need to come off it. Bill, the owner, renovated the place and now it looks fine, so you lot have nothing further to complain about. The pastries, cakes, muffins (if you can get one!), and other baked goods are all made fresh daily. The bread is simply the best part, as Bill makes these loaves from scratch at 4 every morning. The Cracked wheat is salt, cholesterol, and fat free. How can you go wrong with that? It's also still hot if you get there in time, and if you don't you won't be getting bread. People's biggest complaint here seems to be that the bakery seems to be lacking product during the afternoon. That is because this bakery opens at 6 am on the dot. And a hoard of early morning locals arrive by 8 every morning to pick up their breads, muffins, coffee and the like before they head off to work. You just have to be there in time to get all the delicious goodies! The sandwiches are made fresh to order, on the bread they bake that morning, and for those who are complaining about them not having your phone order ready in time, they make it for the time you specify on the phone. So it's fresh. You can't reasonably expect a sandwich you order to be ready at 2 be ready at 1:30, nor do I think you'd want it to. At any rate, this bakery is a lovely little chunk of Concord history. It's been there since the early days of the 1920's I think, and yes, it needed a little material renovation. But when people start rating a bakery on it's outward appearances instead of the delicious, fresh products that deserved to be judged instead, things need to be called out. Note - No, I'm not Bill, nor am I his sister or even related to him. I'm just a customer who loves everything this place puts out and it bothers me that people are snapping about the door instead of the bread. read more

We order, and the kid who takes our order says "oh, we don't do sandwiches until 11:30" I ask what time it is and he says "11:25" Really? I said we would wait.....which we did, for literally 30 minutes. A woman came in who had ordered hers over the phone, calling at 11. She waited as long as we did because THEY DO NOT MAKE SANDWICHES UNTIL 11:30. What kind of way is this to run a business? Seriously? You have orders, yet you do not make them until 11:30? If you take an order over the phone, find out what time the person is coming in, then make them 10 minutes prior. This place is ridiculous. I have never seen so many people in a kitchen doing so little. Also, this was on a beautiful Saturday, in bustling Concord, and they don't make sandwiches until 11:30? Again, our overpriced sandwich (8.25, which is not even listed on the board since they must be embarrassed by the price) was delicious, but not worth it. Never again. Go to Main Streets Cafe, Helens (to sit down) or the Cheese Shop. If you want the best weekday sandwich ever, head to The Country Kitchen--sadly, not open on weekends. read more

I have tried this place twice, the service is awful. The second visit was the worse. I called and ordered over the phone and I could tell that the person taking my order was distracted. She kept getting it wrong. After asking for a tuna sandwich several times she said, OK a BLT?! I think she was talking to someone in the store. I placed my order finally. When I got to the store, I waited while at least 6 other people came in and ordered and got their order. The employee at the counter asked a few times what my name was and just nodded but did not check on the order or do anything. After I was the only one left in the store, she discovered that my order had been dropped. Finally, I got an order that was wrong. Getting change was just as problematic. It took me three times to get the correct change. The list of sandwiches do not have prices with them. I guess you just have to know or if you have to ask you shouldn't go in. i have been to concord center before and did not have the time to stop in, but the other sunday I made a point to stop by to see what they had for sale. My expectations were high based on the fact it is apart of a chic downtown... As you enter you open a swinging screen door like an old country kitchen and it just gets older as you enter - cannot imagine the last time any money was put into the front part of the bakery - looks forgotten. The far back wall is where the breads are displayed and to your left is the register and where you will find cookies and other baked goods. They had some big cookies that looked kind of boring and not special, a few loaves of bread, but I was not looking for bread. I did notice they had bagels and they make them in house - so i got the last everything to have later - it was a good bagel and i used it for an BET sandwich (bacon, egg and tomato) -- slightly toasted bagel that was buttered... Considering that this is the only bakery in the center options are limited if you are seeking something sweet unless you are at a cafe - and there are a few to choose from depending on the food you like. When I went there was one person at the counter and not many options other than a few loaves of bread, 3 types of bagels and some disappointing cookies that looked overcooked. Sally Ann's is great, as long as you put up with their little idiosyncrasies. The much-needed renovation has dealt with most of the hygiene and atmosphere issues, though there still isn't anywhere to sit. The baked goods are awesome, and the fresh lemonade is to die for, though it takes a long time to make. My custom order of cheesecake was NOT good - as another person said, I think the custom orders, though encouraged, are often slapped together last-minute. But the regular case-dwelling goods are awesome. I recommend the cracked wheat bread, the chocolate chip cookies, and most of all the cheesecake brownies. Some of the staff are really pleasant, and all are competent. Can get very busy in the morning/at lunch, and closes early (4:30). Especially with bread, the earlier you go the more likely you'll get what you want. read more
