After years ordering everything online it was almost nostalgic picking products by hand without guessing. Carson was so helpful and very knowledgable which is the second most important value in an employee. Good hire there, wish I had employees as engaging. This is a really convenient location with great parking, right in the heart of Hollywood. I come here to get my purple shampoo, and that's about it. But there really is a wide variety of products here, so I imagine it's one-stop-shopping for people people in the industry. (Some notes about purple shampoo... so yeah, I cheated on my hairstylist and tried someone new to put in highlights. It turned out crazy yellow and brassy and I hated it, even with toner. Online purchase - FALSE ADVERTISING AND BAIT AND SWITCH! I went on their website to purchase a hair care product and saw that it was buy one get one free. There wasn't any labeled button on the website at checkout to add the third item, and of course I didn't add the third one because I didn't want to get charged for three. I assumed like with most shopping websites it would add the free item at checkout. NOPE! Never got the free item. Called and spoke to a supervisor and they refused to mail me the third item and were only willing to refund me for HALF of the missing item. Honestly I have avoided going into Sally's for a while because normally I have questions which no one who works there can or will answer. I just always got the worst service imaginable. Imagine my shock going here and finding that their makeup quality went up quite a bit...then I ask a question and the staff WANT to help...and go out of their way to do so. My friend I was with ended up buying a ton of stuff and getting a fabulous bag for free for doing so. This location is fabulous! The off street free and convenient located parking in front of the store is a bonus for Portland shoppers and this location has it. I have trashed my hair over the years, assumed that I knew what I was doing, and usually very brutally discovered that I had no idea what I was doing. I finally decided to ask for help with finding a method of correcting a dark purple-black on my ends, a light warm brown for the middle of my hair, and my natural roots (goal was to match my deep brown roots entirely--a whole mess). The Assistant Manager Emily took the time to help me discover the right shade for my roots (because I hadn't seen them in about 10 years), and an incredibly easy way to neutralize the cool and warm tones in my hair. My hair came out incredibly even and matches my hair color PERFECTLY. I'm exceptionally pleased with the patience and knowledge demonstrated by Emily. Girl is 10/10, deserves a raise, and I will be seeking her assistance the next time I shop at Sally's! read more

This is my closest beauty supply store so as a hair stylist I constantly go here for my products. Every time I come here it's ALWAYS something. Either the girls that work there are following me and my boyfriend like we would steal (racial profiling), they are rude verbally and the way they look at you and look in general as if they are never happy and they just hate everybody ! What's the most annoying is everytime I grab something I will get opinions from the workers like "do u know what this does" "that's strong be careful" "do u have the right stuff" "you know you need developer with this right" in the most attitude ways And I understand it's their job to help and inform but I never ask nor questioned they'll just say it to my face like I don't know what I'm doing ! I'm a hairstylist I know what products I need and don't need . I don't go there for help and advice I go there to stock up on my products ! Sally has been one of those places I hit on and off during the year. I have found the prices are reasonable for hair color and toner. However, no matter which location I have hit, I have a problem getting anyone working there able to help me with hair color. . I usually get my hair professionally colored and then hit the roots myself in between. Despite the fact they have stylist working there, they have just walked me to the color selections and tell me whatever color I want, with no clear direction on level of color I should get to match my overall color. I gave up and now just close my eyes, grab a box and hope for the best. Sally's is also great at the holidays or birthdays if you are looking for inexpensive, but decent quality small gifts. A great place to get your basic beauty supply items (rollers, pins, clips, other tools, polish remover, etc). I keep expecting to see Pureology or Rusk, but at Sally's, you're going back to the basics here. The small, narrow space is jam packed with just about everything you need from head to toe. The customer service is always inviting, but never pushy. I can walk around the store for 30 without feeling like I'm going to get thrown out if I don't make a purchase - pronto. In terms of the hours, I've only showed up in the middle of the day so I never had a problem with late staff, but we'll see. :) read more

Sally to the rescue If you're too poor at the moment to get your hair done by a professional and ended up with a screwy color doing it yourself, check out Sally Beauty Supply for a rescue. I decided to give coloring my hair a go and was reminded yet again why we pay professionals for these things. It seems easy enough but whenever I've tried it myself, I always seem to screw up. Now granted, I'm not talking one color here. I was adding highlights, which are more complicated. But I wasn't thinking and did it myself. Now I have VERY yellow looking highlights. Yes, it's that shocking. I was set to just go to the drug store for an all over, save me color but decided to check out Sally's instead. My friend has pink hair, which you can imagine takes a bit of an effort to achieve, so we've been there quite a bit together. Depending on who's on duty, they can be pretty helpful and offer unique hair colors that the average place doesn't have. I decided on a light auburn to overtake my yellow in the hopes that they'll come through as nice highlights. Cross your fingers it works, or I'll be going hat shopping soon. Either that or substituting for Big Bird. Tip: Get a frequent shopper's card. You'll get a discount each time. read more

I like Sally's. Really. I do. I've gone to Sally's many times and bought all sorts of things needed for cheap touch-ups or spur of the moment dye jobs or neon extensions for a party or what have you. My creativity/impulsiveness has struck all around the country, too, giving me a great number of Sally experiences to reflect upon. I have to say that this is the worst Sally Beauty Supply that I've been to, and that includes Sally Beauty Supply locations in -13- different states. Is it because the products are lacking or more expensive? No- they're not. All of this is standard. Everything you'd come here to find is on the shelf and standard price. Is it because the customer service was god awful? Yes. It was. The people who work here seem to take their cosmetology education (if they have any- because really, who would use 1500 hours of school to work at a Sally's?) as a carte blanche to treat their customers like trash. Within two minutes of walking in the door, I was told that my hair probably feels like snot when it's wet and that I had what would be called a "chemical hair cut" situation from one employee, while the other looked on with a face like she'd just swallowed a nasty-tasting bird and it was biting her throat on its way down. The looks and arm crossing and sighs continued from this silent but self-assuredly superior woman until I walked away with Rude Employee 1 to find out where what I was looking for would be. If this chick is so brilliant at cosmetology, the cat obviously had her tongue, and she let her narrowed eyes, and overly sour face do the talking for her. Helpful, right? Pssht. Were it a simple case of over bleaching my hair, I would still be unsatisfied with the way that I was treated, but wouldn't be insulted enough to write a negative review. However, the fact that my hair is NATURALLY a texture that neither looks nor feels like White Girl Barbie Hair and was treated as if my ethnic difference were a terrible, ugly MISTAKE that was ~hopeless~ unless I hacked it all off (and looked whiter?) or dyed it darker (to smoothe it "back" to looking whiter?). Can you even imagine how terrible a person must feel to be told that an ethnic difference between themselves and the dominant cultural aesthetic (Western European Caucasian) must feel like "snot" or be cut off? There was no room to get a word in edgewise between the condescending glare of the silent bird-swallower or her overly-loquacious coworker. I tried to just remain pleasant in the hopes that they'd just leave me alone and let me shop. When I finally was able to shop, they wouldn't let me check out with my partner's credit card to our joint account because they don't have a pin pad. I was told to go find a bank and come back with cash. Alright. Whatever. The awkward third employee offered to keep what I came in for behind the counter waiting for me. I went to the ATM, came back, and lo and behold, there was nothing put behind the counter. It was just put back. As if I were a liar, trying to con them, or just came in to be verbally assaulted for fun. The previously rude employees found it, rang it up, and never even smiled. I obviously was ruining their day by deciding to make a purchase. Or maybe they made really arrogant and rude comments once I left the first time and assured each other that I wouldn't be back and felt a bit embarrassed when I did. I'm a licensed esthetician who has been working in real salon/spas, not strip mall beauty shops, since before I even graduated and I'm sure that this is because I was taught how to treat customers properly and with respect. I would NEVER make these sorts of insensitive and rude comments and surely wouldn't deign to tell these clerks about their skin without even touching it, using a mag lamp or being asked. And I sure as hell would not make assumptions as to anyone's ethnic identity, and proceed to insult them based on my reading of their skin color and what I might think their hair "should" look like. Deplorable customer service. They really should be ashamed of themselves. read more

Not bad. I went in there looking for a particular item, and they didn't have it. I was somewhat surprised since Sally's is usually my go to for natural hair products. I've had some difficulty finding things due to the location of where I live, so I went here expecting to find the item, but I didn't. Not really their fault since I'm sure they don't have any control of what comes into the store. Had no stars been an option I would have chosen it. I have been trying to cancel an order from Sally for 6 days. When you call their customer service number and try to go through the menu options all disconnect you. I have hit menu option 2 (internet sales) multiple times over multiple days all with the same result - disconnect. I have also emailed at least a dozen times and have yet to receive a response other than one auto response last night regarding extended processing times. Since my order has neither been process or shipped WHY CANT I GET SOMEONE TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY REQUEST FOR CANCELING IT. I feel badly for customers who have had poor experiences while shopping here, because I have NEVER had a bad time here! All employees I've had contact with have always been kind, courteous, and quick to help. I've gone here off and on for years. I do think it's important to go in knowing your stuff--I don't really expect the sales people to have all the answers for the "perfect" color. I've been told some great tips, though, but I always tread with caution--because let's face it--if you're doing your hair at home, there is always risk involved. Especially if you're trying something new! I hope that this Sally's location stays true to the positive choices in staff that I have seen over the years, and is quick to weed out people that aren't a good fit. I went here with the thought of supporting local business, only to find out that Sally Beauty is NOT a local company, and they hide behind the same innane corporate policies of other chains. I bought the top-of-the-line Oster hair clippers. The nice salesperson misinformed me when I asked about what combs were included, pointing to the panel on the box that turned out to be the one showing OPTIONAL combs that could be ordered separately. She also apparently neglIected to give me a receipt, because when I returned the next day to remedy the shortage of combs, the assistant manager simply chose the "sorry, without a receipt, I can't help you" pathway, rather than looking up the transaction with my credit card number and resolving the issue. I am NOT one to throw away receipts (my car is full of gas receipts) at least until the warranty has expired. It was the self-assured smugness of the assistant manager and her complete lack of attempt to work out any solution that made me realize I had made a mistake by going to Sally Beauty. I imagine the corporate office will give her a raise "for standing by corporate policy in the face of overwheming evidence of its inapplicableness to a situation involving a now-former customer." read more
