I have been trying to reduce my plastic footprint for a few years now, and Mama & Hapa is my go-to place to get my liquid refills. Since I have sensitive skin and am allergic to industrial anti-fungal ingredients, it's nice to know their products have shorter lists of ingredients and my skin won't be irritated. So far I've tried their lavender shampoo, conditioner and rose toner, and I liked them all. They smell good and lather/wash well. The prices are reasonable as well. I filled two containers of shampoo and conditioner plus two bottles of rose toner for 28 bucks. One bit of caution: make sure to do short pauses when you refill the conditioner, as it tends to overflow. The staff also mentioned that a Beaverton location is opening this Fall, which is great so I can get my refill without commuting to their Portland locations. read more

Amazing selection of products- pretty much everything you would need outside of food items to in order to live low waste! I'm giving a 5 star review in particular for their delivery service! Even though they were short staffed, they delivered my order at 10pm! The zero-waste delivery system is awesome- all you do is order online and they will use donated containers to fill up with your products at the store. Then, they instruct you to leave out a box or bag so you can bring in your stuff from your doorstep. Mama & Hapa's solves a few of the common issues with zero waste stores: 1. They are open for long hours all week (rather than being a pop-up). They also have a large inventory so it can be your one-stop shop. 2. They don't require you to pre-weigh then post-weigh your containers and do math to calculate the difference. Their RFID chip dispensing system is so smooth, easy, and unique. 3. Their prices are reasonable. Same or cheaper than what you find in a drug store for the most part. 4. They provide jars and containers for free! If you forget yours, no problem. And if have extra you can drop them off here. 5. This one's more personal but I feel like they don't judge you for the areas of your life that haven't gotten reduced to low waste yet. I've never been to a zero waste shop before and I was so impressed and I got so many things I've been looking for. The dryer balls are amazing and so cute! I was most amazed with the affordability of the reusable snack bags because the brand named ones are crazy expensive. I love the ingenious dispensing system where all of the products are released with a card which you just bring to the check out. The store has lots of free jars to use which is so nice. I am excited to try the lavender lotion and laundry detergent but I was surprised at all of the cleaners and other skin care products that were available. The store is small, but full of everything you could possibly need and the design makes sustainability so approachable and realistic. Zero waste stores are found in Europe. Portland has a zero waste Facebook group, and now we have our own zero waste store. The focus to start are body and household liquid items that come home from just about every other store in Portland in their own single use plastic container. Body soap, shampoo, dish soap, cleaners, and the like. They built their own custom system that measures liquids so you don't need to weigh the empty container, or the full container. They do have reusable containers, if you didn't bring them from home. They have a collection of washable diapers and baby items, dental floss, loofas, kitchen brushes, food utensils, stretchy silicone lids to replace plastic wrap, metal straws, and more. What's the concern about single use plastics? Some of those plastic containers can go in the Portland curbside recycling, but since China is refusing to take it because Americans can't wash them and separate them, the single use containers and lids go to a landfill in Eastern Oregon. If they are not handled properly, they get into the ocean, as told in the film Midway, by Tacoma photographer-filmmaker Chris Jordan. The store is small, beautiful, clean, and minimal. If you are interested in zero waste, there is an active Portland group for that. This is the missing piece we have been waiting for. Portland needs this store and Portland is ready for it! read more

This shop offers an efficient way to refill your own containers with personal care and household cleaning products. They also have some reusable products, like cloth diapers, period products, etc. I love that they sell by volume, using an RFID card to keep track of what you put in your containers. No tare weights means quick checkout. They lose one star for mediocre customer service. The clerk knew nothing about their cloth diapers. All I asked was the brand. She didn't know and immediately picked up her phone. I assumed she was checking, but she wasn't, apparently our transaction was over, she asked "ya need anything else?" Uh nope, I guess we're done here. I couldn't figure out the brand of the diaper or the material they're made out of. At $8 per diaper, I can't imagine the quality is any good. They appeared to be an all in one without the insert sewn in on one edge, as is customary. It felt like microfiber (ie microplastic nightmare). Anyway, if you're looking for cloth diapers, they have them, but good luck getting any information about them. read more

Well isn't this just a neat little place. Brought the girlfriend here because she's always nagging me to recycle more and something something carbon footprint something. Welp, she fell in love with this place. Brought 3 mason jars to fill up and we soon found out that that was not enough. Lucky for us, this place let's you borrow or give away their own jars for use. They also have labels that you can stick on the jars. We spent about an hour here. Girlfriend insisted on reading all the labels before deciding what to get. So that was boring for me. But she left with a handful or jars and a big ass smile on her face. Oh yeah, and the workers were super friendly and knowledgeable too. We will be back for sure. read more

Love this place! I've come a handful of times. Vinegar: I've refilled my glass vinegar jar a few times and it's like under a buck to do so. Deodorant: cheaper than Native and NO PLASTIC, I think I'm on my 3rd stick Laundry pods: I like that if I want one load to be scented I can (towels or sheets maybe for guests) and I'm not stuck with a bunch of perfumed detergent. Unscented/allergen free laundry liquid: I would def repurchase this. Dishwasher pods: can't tell a difference. Would the shop ever get something like Finish liquid in bulk? I bet vinegar is a substitute. Silicone bowl covers: inexpensive and extremely useful for my vintage Pyrex bowls that never had lids. I've tried body wash and face cleanser and we keep them in our guest bathroom with the shop labels on them! I like knowing we could be introducing our family and friends to a different way to live than buying more single use plastics. In anticipation of warmer weather, I think I'd try car wash (I think they have that) and maybe see if it's ok to add our pressure washer to wash our cars at home without plastic. read more

I was excited when I found out this store is not too far away from me, and it does not disappoint. It has nice open space and everything is nicely displayed. So far we've tried some powdered and liquid products and floss. The weighing and bottling is always nice and easy. No mess at all. Super helpful and friendly staff. This is one of the most amazing zero waste stores I've been to! Whenever I visit a new city I like to visit their zero waste/bulk stores and this one is incredible. I've never seen a refillery that used a digital system to track the weight of what you're buying, it's so cool. They also offer free jars if you didn't bring your own which is great, most other places add an additional fee for them. This is definitely worth a visit if you're looking to buy household products plastic free (soap, cleaners, lotion, etc) but is still great just to look around, too. read more

I wish they had an LA location! Was flying and couldn't bring liquids on the plane, but I got to buy a few ounces of their lotion (lavender scent). Super cheap as they charge by the volume. I did stocked up on hard goods though! I got their deodorant that lasted me the whole day after hiking Multnomah Falls. Loved their chapstick because it smells good and it works, and it's a lot bigger than regular chapsticks. Got their reusable ziplocks that are super durable and they come in fun colors too. I think what I like best about this place is that it minimizes my carbon footprint. I'm not great at leaving zero waste, but this shop allows me to start at affordable prices! Great little shop with an amazing zero waste concept! It's super simple - you bring a container from home, or grab one of their donated jars from the store, or purchase an appropriate container. They give you a card that keeps track of how much product you've purchased. Fill your container with your desired amount of product, and boom - you're good to go! Lots of natural cleaning and bath products, and the store-night containers they carry come in every possible configuration - soap pumps, spray bottles, dishes, the list goes ON honey! Being the "by the ounce" products, they also carry a lot of purchase-price items like bar soap, loofas, a bunch of reusable home goods like metal straws, food containers, shopping bags etc. And on top of this - all the prices were super reasonable! Great find, and I'm glad I was able to stop in! I grabbed a charcoal facial bar, a natural scrubbing loofa, and some lavender bath and shower gel. Just got back from visiting this shop for the first time. I heard about it on evening news. What an absolutely amazing store! I've been trying to stop using as much plastic as I could. Mama & Hapa's is certainly going to help me with this endeavor. The shop was clean, uncrowded and, after a short tutorial I was able to shop with ease. I brought some containers but needed to borrow a few of theirs. No problem and no charge thank you! I bought window cleaner, multi purpose cleaner, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, dishwasher pods and maybe one other thing for about $20. Most of the items are concentrated so it was a bargain. I have a few items at home (detergent, toothpaste, etc.) to use up before I go back but I will be a long time customer from here on out. Save the planet, shop at Mama & Hapa's! read more

We've started going to this shop and it is great. You can bring your own jars or containers or use a recycled glass jar they have and fill them with household cleaners, soaps, etc.. You can get good toothpaste in old fashioned recyclable metal tubes. A very innovative way to fill jars and track what you purchase using smart card technology, it really is cool. So far, we used their hand soap, dish soap, laundry soap, and automatic dishwasher soap. All seemed to work great and no waste! read more
