Welcome to Spanky's. I finally made it.

OMG - is this a fun place... Good to be back here since Williston's left. We finally had the opportunity to come here and made the most of it. Parking was a snap and it's only five minutes from home. You walk into what you know is going to be a great experience. Crowded and lots of conversations going on. Everyone looked so comfortable. Very rustic & comfortable look to the shop. A quick look through the menu and we all knew exactly what we were having. Of course, I had to start off with the amazing chicken wings. For me and my sister-in-law: Cheeseburger with Fries. Fresh and delicious. This is one heck of a burger. I like the idea of two smaller patties. It was also a very nice, light potato bun. For my wife: Grilled chicken. This can always be tricky bringing some good flavor into the grilled chicken. They manage to do a really nice job here. All items came with amazing fries (I am very particular with my fries. A teriffic team rounds out the whole experiece here. Looking forward to my return trips. A new discovery for us. The bar isn't huge, but it's very cozy. We were given a very warm welcome; we had a table by the window, and we were able to watch the games. There were a lot of locals there, which is a good sign. Our waitress, Shannon, was very attentive. She constantly checked in to make sure we were enjoying everything. We ordered chicken wings and a steak. The presentation of the steak was beautiful, and all the food was truly exceptional. The Lemon Drop cocktail was delicious. We will definitely be back. The bar is situated in a quiet spot, yet it is close to Garden City Mall--making it a great place to relax after shopping.

Trying to figure out a new place to explore, I did the next best thing. I YELPED! I found Sally Black's Bar & Grill haphazardly by scrolling other yelpers page and activities. Crystal P an Elite Yelper posted a picture of Mac and Cheese with chicken. It piqued my interest. I grabbed a friend, and we drove from Franklin Square to destination Sally Black's in Williston Park. Finding this place was not hard to find as it sits on the corner, Sally Black's displayed on a bold beautiful black and white sign, you could not miss it. There is parking in the area just be mindful to read the signs, 90 minutes 7 TO 7. We walked into the party... nah just kidding, it is a song. But seriously we walked into this establishment and country music was pumping loud. I felt way out of place; can you figure out why? Yes, I am not country, nor do I listen to country music. But today!!!!!! I listened to country music. I glanced over my entire surroundings and looked for another person that did not listen to country music, it was just the two of us. We had the best time ever. We came to the conclusion, using non-verbal communication, the aesthetics are similar to that of a Western Saloon. I watch cowboy pictures all the time so I kind of fit the crowd. The hostess escorted us to a table, and I asked to sit at the high top for comfort. The staff was pleasingly pleasant and Brice our waitress was performing her duties effortlessly, without missing a stride. It was crowded and she juggle every table inside and a few on the outside because they offer outside dining. We were her first customer to order a shot called, Woo Woo which consisted of vodka cranberry juice and something else. I had an Arnold Palmer very balanced in taste It was satisfying. We ordered 6 Honey BBQ wings to split. They wings had a robust honey BBQ taste, but they were a little overcooked for my liking, but they weren't bad. We ordered one Burger with cheddar cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Any topping over three are extra. The burger was huge we split that as well. The taste was bland which is not a bad thing because you can enjoy the burger and natural flavors. The French fires were proportioned to a small order. We had cheesecake, D' licious and brownie with ice cream. The brown was a tad bite too sweet for me as I curbed my sugar intake but all brownies are too sweet for me. Oh, I forgot about Ever, the guy that is gracefully carrying 3 or four plates without a tray, Ever has skillz you would be amazed if you watched him work. To conclude our decision, in the words of The Terminator, I'll Be Back! They do charge a credit card fee, and it noted on the menu and there is upstairs dining.

The old Spanky's basically. First I love their mac & cheese so much like literally my favorite thing in the world please don't ever stop making it! Anyway since they moved their location right by our house of course we had to come check it out. Awesome new location and it's so nice inside. We enjoyed our meal so much and service was great. I'm so happy they are now closer to us so we can actually go there all the time (used to always do take out when they were down Jericho) my hubs is dying for their wings so we'll probably be back sooner rather than later :)

Universal wasn't too far, and Yelp informed me of the amazing craft beer selection. When I pulled up, I have to admit, I felt i must have been punked. The outside looks just like any liquor and beer store. And even the first few aisles are pretty standard. But head to the back, and you'll find an amazing array of local and just damn good craft beers. I wish more of the hoppy ones could be consistently cold, but that would be challenging given the supply. (Most of these breweries print a canned date on them, so be sure to check.) I've never seen so much Other Half besides at the brewery itself, and they even had a 4-pack of a semi-obscure brewery in the central Connecticut that I adore. Can't wait for another excuse to come by.

Seen one beverage store and you've seen em all...well, that can be mostly true, and thinking that…read moreI'm going to be contradictory to that opening statement is incorrect. Yes, Universal Beverage is no different from your run of the mill beverage stop...in most ways. You understand what I'm talking about if you've frequented spots like this. Ya know, any place with "beverage" in the name that has an ice freezer and plenty of sodas and waters and drinks and such. Though where the money truly lies is in the walls and walls of craft beers that these stores supply. Problem is, just like with Universal, some of these beers generate a shelf life much longer than they're intended to have (i.e. dust covered bottles). Therein lies the major turnoff of any place like this. BUT, I have to return to the first paragraph and say that Universal differs from many other spots for one huge reason: Other Half. Maybe this means very little to some avid beer drinkers (especially if IPAs aren't your thing) and perhaps there are a few craft beer aficionados that shun OH (for whatever reason), but for me (and many others), Other Half has consistently been a quintessential brewery in the NY suds scene as they continue to dole out glorious beers week after week. My issue comes from the fact that I could never consistently lay my hands on some cans of OH without trekking to the brewery...until now. You see, Universal carries a massive selection of Other Half beer. I was amazed to see how many cases lined the floor by one corner of this small beverage storefront. Though true amazement came once I learned that OH had just released cans the day before and lo and behold, Universal had them in stock the very next day. Better yet, prices are the same as if you got the cans straight from the brewery. No uptick in prices which is extremely hard to beat. This trio of facts alone earns several Yelp stars for Universal Beverage. I'll move away from Other Half factor for a moment and give Universal a little more credit for their beer selection. They do indeed get a pretty eclectic and hard to find variety of beers from local spots and other areas that can be difficult to come by. A small case in point would be my desire to track down the Warhead sour beers from Artisanal Brew Works. There they were, sitting on the shelf when I first walked into UB. Though not that exotic it was still a great first impression to say the least. I will throw one other caveat out there with this place. Unlike many beverage stores that are all for you mixing and matching single cans, Universal tends to gear themselves at keeping things in the 4-6 packs that they are purchased in. This isn't necessarily a problem (especially for those that just gotta have some Other Half or something else of rarity and want the four cans the way they come), but I can't help but shake the fact that a few cans didn't make it into my beer fridge because I only wanted one, and that just wasn't an option here. Just a good piece of info to know. Overall, Universal Beverage is really nothing spectacular to look at. It's almost hole-in-the-wall-esque from its size and pushed back location on Westbury Avenue. But it's the treasures of knowing just what you can find there (specifically, but not limited to, Other Half) which puts this place on the map. I'll most certainly be back as I continue to follow them on Instagram as I wait for the posts of new cans they get in stock. Follow them too (the owner will be happy to know you're checking them out online) and perhaps you'll see a post that makes you venture to Universal Beverage for something rare...or just Other Half. Either way you'll be glad you went.

I was supposed to transfer at Jamaica but didn't realize until it was too late. Mineola was the next stop, so I got off and waited for my ride to accommodate me. It was hot as balls out and I was thirsty, and the thought of a cold beer while waiting the extra 20 minutes for my ride to get here sounded lovely, honestly. I was a little unsure about sitting at the bar alone at a spot I'd never been to before, but saw there was an outdoor table in the semi shade that I could grab (as long as I was fine with sipping beer out of a plastic glass). In retrospect I should've asked about specials, but I just went with my go-to Heineken which set me back $7. I wasn't mad about it. The bartender was friendly, though I did feel like I kind of interrupted a personal conversation she was having with a man at the bar who seemed to be a local. Can't speak to the food but their menu did look good. Not a bad stop, overall. I feel very recovered.

I had to change plans quickly as I looked at the specials they had going on that day wow! We decided to go with the duck and the monkfish main course entrees instead. I really like how juicy and fatty the duck was very succulent and delicious yummy. I especially liked the wine sauce on top among taste sweet with a slight tart to it juts the right balance I was impressed. Laslty the side with butter squash was also a delight to eat and treat! Second course was the monkfish which was great as well. It had a slightly Smokey flavor to my pallet and a slight crunch on the outside maybe it was torched or seared not sure. Whatever the case it was a great touch to the dish very tasty and juicy as well. I love the sauce and the sides were great mashed potatoes with broccoli yummy!
