Finding a good salon is like dating. I've had to go through several mediocre experiences (or "bad dates") to find the right place and the right stylist - but finally, I found my match. Salon 6 is just north of the main Broad Ripple village off of College Ave. My favorite thing about this salon (other than the haircuts I get) is the overall atmosphere. It has a small boutique vibe that is relaxed and unpretentious. The staff is always friendly and accommodating and offer you a drink of choice while you wait. The waiting area has a little bit of a New Age feel with some beautiful stones and crystals and local artisan jewelry. It immediately feels very relaxing. They have a few complementary add on services you can choose from, and I especially enjoy the Vitamin D lamp in the winter when I'm missing the sunshine. My stylist, Heidi, has given me some of the best haircuts I've ever had, hands down. When I booked my first appointment with her she took the time to talk about what I wanted and ask me questions. After allowing my hair to grow for a couple years and really doing nothing with it, I was looking for a "long shag" cut which I had asked for from other stylists at other salons that never seemed to turn out the way I envisioned it. Lucky for me, Heidi is spectacular at shag cuts and also specializes in razor cuts, which can be difficult to find. I told her I was ready for a change and to go for it and the results were even better than what I had in mind. Since then I've received multiple compliments on my cuts with an added comment "that's the kind of cut I've been wanting and I can't find someone to do it right!" My visits are always pleasant and relaxing. I never feel pressured to chat or make small talk, but when we do it's easy and laid back. I always leave with a fresh cut and style that makes me feel like I just treated myself to something luxurious without the feeling of a stuffy, ostentatious "luxury" salon where everyone leaves with basically the same haircut, color, extensions, etc. Salon 6 not only meets what I'm looking for in a salon experience, but Heidi takes it to the next level with her killer haircuts. read more

I love coming to Salon 6. The staff is friendly, scheduling is easy, and it's very comfy inside especially the waiting area. Stephanie has been cutting my hair for years. She takes the time to do a consultation with each cut, even if I'm doing the same thing. While doing the shampoo she gives the BEST head massage. I could sit there all day letting her massage my head. She also does wonderful color work. We did a balayage color with blonde and it's held up so well. I got so many compliments on this color. I always walk out feeling refreshed and energized from a great cut. I don't feel pressured to buy a ton of products. They do offer the Eurphora line and it's a great company. This was my first visit to Salon 6 and I must say that I will definitely be returning!!! I utilized their online appointment form to schedule a visit in mid-August in an effort to re-vitalize my appearance. I came in with a slightly foggy idea of what I wanted and I was definitely not disappointed! When I entered the building, I was greeted by a warm, enthusiastic smile and a offer of a beverage. As I filled out the little new client form, my ice cold glass of water arrived and I was shown into a comfy waiting area to await my appointed stylist, Rebecca. I did not have to wait long before Rebecca arrived and showed me to a chair. The layout of the salon was very homey with only about 2-3 chairs per room. Made it feel more like a living room than a commercial salon. For my visit, I wanted a balayage and layered-cut. I had a few pictures that showed the goal hair style, to which Rebecca was very receptive and she bounced some suggestions off to identify the best end goal for my particular hair base. To begin, Rebecca and a stylist-in-training did a rough cut so that they wouldn't use unnecessary amounts of dye. Then the dye portion began and went without a hitch. Once the dye was ready to be rinsed out, I was taken to a dimly lit washroom complete with comfy chairs. It was probably one of the best hair washes I have ever had, no joke. Instead of simply washing the hair, the stylist took it a step further and performed a scalp massage. Super relaxing! After the rinse, it was time for the cut and style. Rebecca absolutely crushed it and the Eufora products utilized smelled great (product prices were a little high for my personal preference). After the styling portion, I got to have an after photo taken that definitely made me feel cool. All in all, a great experience with a very attentive staff. I've been to Salon 6 a few times now and have decided I really love it! I've had my hair cut and colored (for the first time) by Lexi and she does a great job! She also is very relatable and fun to talk with while I'm there! Every interaction I've had with any of the ladies at the salon have been positive and I feel like they truly care about all of their customers. I do think some of the actual space itself could be upgraded, like the lighting for example, but it's not enough to make me choose another salon. Seriously? I wish I could give this place six stars. I. LOVE. Salon 6. Any of the girls (or guys!) in here are great, but personally, I'm loyal to Stephanie. My hair is very difficult to cut; it's really curly on top, and really straight on the bottom--what an enormous pain in my ass, by the way--and where most stylists throw their hands up in despair, or nervously try to bravado their way through their utter confusion, Stephanie never bats an eyelash. She always gives me a rockin' cut that flatters my face and, miraculously, works with my hair's schizophrenia instead of fighting it. She has good chair-side manner, too--she'll chat if you want, but is also cool with silence if you're into that. I really can't praise Stephanie highly enough. She is the best stylist I have ever found, including my experiences in several other countries. Everyone in here is courteous, helpful and fun, and they'll even bring you drinks. After a bad experience at a salon as a teenager, I had been coloring my hair at home for a few years. Since my mom is a former hairdresser, she has been the one I've turned to for all hair-related changes. I have brown hair. We've bleached it, dyed it red, and, more recently, used semi-permanent boxed color, but haven't colored it my hair in at least 6 months (relevant). I decided I wanted to do something different with my hair and, after discussing what I wanted, my mother suggested it would be easier to go to a salon. After researching what I wanted (some lighter tones in my dark brown hair, balayage style), I dove into Yelp reviews to find a salon who would do exactly what I wanted. I compared multiple salons, and chose Salon 6 because their reviews were awesome and Instagram account was *perfect*. I chose to use their online scheduling. It was super easy, and I got a response the next day asking what I wanted (even included photos!), what my current hair color condition was, and when I wanted to make an appointment. I was thrilled they had a time available before I went home for Christmas! I scheduled it for today (Saturday) at 9am. This was two weeks ago that I scheduled the appointment. This past Thursday I got a text confirming my appointment for 9am again. Fast forward to this morning, I had just pulled into the parking lot at 8:55 when I got a phone call saying they had a scheduling "error" and had to push my appointment to 10am. There were no cars in the parking lot, even though the opening time online said 9am. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, was glad I live close, and ran a couple errands with the extra time. When I got to the salon for the second time around 9:45, they were prompt with checking me in and offered me a drink. The stylist got me to a chair quickly as well and apologized for the rescheduling. But, she seemed incredibly rushed and wasn't exactly sincere. Again, I gave her the benefit of the doubt since it was before the holidays and she was still nice. I explained to her what I wanted and my prior history. She seemed like she understood, but now I'm not so sure now. After telling her I have used boxed semi-permanent color on my hair (a color very close to my natural color, I might add), she immediately started explaining to me that because my hair has had a bit of color on it that doing the lighter tones in my hair would be "much harder". I was completely confused, but she offered to do a test strip anyway to see how the color in my hair lifted. She then told me, however, that she wouldn't have time today to completely do my hair. Okay, really disappointing after already waiting an extra hour for my two-week old appointment. She told me that a consultation should have been scheduled as well. Back to the test strip: For some reason, she put the bleach all the way up to my root. I have no idea why she put it up so high since the lighter tones I wanted would have started a quarter/halfway down my hair. She left the bleach on for about a half an hour, coming back every 10 minutes to check the progress. While washing the bleach out, she again told me that because my hair has been colored (again, by semi-permanent color on top of my natural hair color) that there was really no way to get the lighter tones I desired. She then showed me the test strip, which is near blonde at the roots that quickly transitions down to my natural color. By looking at it, I would have thought she only applied bleach only to my roots. The stylist said that to get the color I wanted I should "let my hair grow out with more virgin hair". However, she then said that if I "wanted to try" to get my hair lighter that I could schedule another appointment. Wait, what? Why would I schedule an appointment when she just told me that there was no way to to get my hair to a lighter shade? I never said I wanted anything platinum blonde if that was what she was thinking; I wanted caramel balayage highlights. I felt like the entire time she talked to me like I was a child who had no idea what I was doing with my hair. I grew up with a hairdresser mother who, frankly, knows her shit, and I knew there was absolutely a way to lighten my hair! I'm frustrated that after waiting an *extra hour* that I was told that what I wanted was not achievable on my hair, but then told that "we can try" if I schedule another appointment. There are examples of what I wanted in many places on their Instagram and you can not tell me that none of those girls used hair color on their hair or had completely "virgin" hair. Maybe some of this could have been solved with more questions, especially if she was that confused about what hair color I wanted. But regardless, a lot of this appointment was just rushed and, honestly, very odd. Thankfully, I was not charged for the time I spent in the salon. read more

The balayage price was pretty competitive with others in the area, but it does seem a little silly to pay $40 dollars for a less than inch trim of hair. Finding your new hairdresser in a new city is no easy feat. You want professional grade service but at Great Clips prices. It's like searching for a hairdresser unicorn. I didn't find a unicorn but I did encounter some thoroughbred, Kentucky Derby worthy hairdressers at Salon 6. I desperately needed this haircut to get rid of my dead ends, and Jordan brought my hair back to life! She and her assistant were friendly and easy to talk to. Jordan had a couple clients so her assistant would jump in to prep my hair for the cut. I felt taken care of the whole time and never like I was just being handed off between the two. Have I mentioned the scalp massage? Oh, not yet?Probably because I was in heaven. Part of the time I thought how much extra this will cost me because it was THAT good. You can imagine my happy surprise to see getting pampered and healthy hair only cost $45. One of my first tasks upon moving to the Indy area was to find "the one." Hair stylist, that is. I found her right away- Taylor at Salon 6. I love the convenience of this salon. When I made my first appointment, I wasn't exactly sure who would best fit my needs. I was able to communicate via email with their front desk team to schedule an appointment with Taylor, who is the best stylist for me. They've also been so easy to get a hold of when I need to change or reschedule an appointment. The staff is wonderful. They are always so pleasant, and offer you a magazine/beverage during the visit which is a nice extra touch. I have loved every haircut + color + style from Taylor. She does a KILLER balayage, and I love how she is always willing to try new things with me. She also does an amazing scalp massage as part of every shampoo (in the most wonderfully relaxing room!) One little note- at my first appointment, I did feel a little bit like product was pushed on me. I had mentioned that I was looking for a certain product, and the stylist recommended something for me. At checkout, my total seemed high, and it wasn't until I got handed a goody bag with a $40 shampoo bottle that I realized I had "accidentally" bought product. She has such a fun personality and makes you immediately feel welcomed. The rest of the staff members were equally as accommodating​, offering water or coffee and making friendly small talk​. My new go-to salon. I needed a new salon near my home in Broad Ripple, and Salon 6 is it! I visited Ashley to take me from blonde to dark brunette for the winter. She listened to my wants and ended up giving me a great color. She also gave me a cut that's easy to style and makes me feel great. Their prices are comparable, if not a few bucks cheaper, than other salons in the area. Customer is service is great, and everyone makes you feel comfortable. Salon 6 was recommended to me by a friend 4 years ago and I have been going since. My hairstylist did an incredible job for the first three years and then she gave me a really bad haircut. One side was TWO inches shorter than the other side. How does that even happen?!? I was a bit shocked because she had been so incredible previously. I went back and she tried to fix my hair for free but it still didn't look good. Then I continued going back to her 2 more times and she just did not cut my hair right. We came to the conclusion that my hair needs to be layered because I have thick and plentiful hair that if it's not in layers than it looks like a box. The last two times I cut my hair, she forgot to layer it and I was so frustrated, yet I kept giving her another chance. As much as I loved my hair cuts initially, I think I am ready to find a new place. My hair is now shorter than expected and I've been trying to grow it out for my wedding. It is short because my hair stylist cut it over and over until both sides were even. Now I'm going to purchase hair extensions for my wedding because there is no way my hair will be long enough by then. I have to spend more money (last thing you want to do when you're planning and paying for a wedding). I'm sad because I really loved going here. The customer service is excellent and my hairstylist was always on time. I am happy to be going somewhere else because I'm ready for better haircuts AND I don't want to pay $65 for a haircut anymore. Never have I been so insulted during a salon experience. The women cutting my hair belittled me the entire time. She would make remakes that my hair was so dry her scissors could not cut through it and it must be the cheap drug store products I use. She kept recommending the salon products and pushing additional services on me. My hair is very healthy and I've always received complains on it. I believe her comments were a complete scam to trick me into buying her products. She cut my hair in 5 minutes and did not know how to style it or frame it. This was the place I first went to back in 2009 when I was rocking the Bieber flip-esque haircut that made me look like I was a caveman. Then comes Salon 6 and bam - my entire aura changed. I went into my freshman classes and felt like a new person. Off went the overly grown bangs and fluff ball sides; in came the style. (This was back before they moved locations, too.) I'm always so nervous going to new hair salons / stylists cause they don't know your head shape and style, but the stylists at Salon 6 pick up very quickly. (Keep in mind, I'm a guy, so I'm not sure about the ladies.) My stylist was Megan, an amazing person, very professional, and always had a new color of hair when I went in. She was great- eliminated that awkward silence when you're getting your hair cut. She picked up how I got my hair cut quickly and remembered every time. I would suggest Salon 6 to all the guys out there that might not have a salon in the Broad Ripple area. And none have really been someone I want to stick with. This was my first time at Salon 6, and my decision to go was based on all the fab yelp reviews. Jackie was my stylist and she has only been doing hair for 3 years, but really did a nice job. She fixed the brassy color from my last, not so great salon venture, by doing highlights and lowlights. The color is great! Instead of getting foiled by scissor happy stylists who only know how to do layers, she listened and worked on blending the layers I have been trying to grow out over the past year. I am so happy I found Megan Gill at Salon 6! I've been going to her for 3 years now, and every time she gives me a fantastic haircut. Even when I give vague input like "I just want something lighter and fresher," she nails it. I recently recommended a friend to her, and she reported a great haircut too, even though her hair is totally different than mine. I wanted to like this place...I really did. It started off great! The salon itself was quite lovely - decor was trendy chic, the front desk staff were nice and helpful, they had a cute little waiting room - 5 stars so far, very promising! The beginning of the appointment went well too...my stylist came out and we chit chatted a bit. She was super nice. I came prepared with pictures to give her an idea of what I was looking for. We talked about my hair type and what style I typically sport etc. I felt like it was a good consult. Then we moved to the back for the shampoo portion of the appointment...OMG, best scalp massage ever. I almost fell asleep - it was glorious...GLORIOUS!!! Here's where things take a turn though. I'm not sure if it was just my stylist, or if she was just having an 'off' day, but I received one of the worst haircuts of my life. I'm relatively simple - just asked for some long side-swipe style bangs and some long layers in my decently long mane. Nothing too drastic. The bangs were waaaaaay too short and more than a little crooked, plus she only took a little tiny bit of hair in the front...mini-bangs. Not a huge deal because I've had LOTS of practice cutting my own bangs - I let it slide in the chair and fixed them at home that very night. Hey, bangs are tricky...right? I actually didn't notice the worst of it until I was home - you see, I had a holiday party that night, so we had decided (during the what-appeared-to-be-awesome consult) that she would curl it up all pretty for the evening once she was done with the cut. It looked good leaving the salon, but when those curls washed out I'm not gonna lie it was pretty bad. Those long layers we talked about were choppy, chunky and not at all even. The whole cut was also pretty blunt - like bowl cut style on the bottom - just a big ol' straight line. Not good. It reminded me of when I was little and I got sick of my Barbie's long luxurious mane...she would totally look better with a chic bob...totally :/ On the plus side, she did listen to how long i wanted it - got the length spot on (silver lining?) This was my first time at Salon 6 and I'll be honest, I'm not gonna be back. They get 3 stars for absolutely nailing the ambiance and shampoo, but the bad cut taints the experience. This salon is the best I've ever found. Especially my stylist, Paula. She listens to exactly what you want and makes really good suggestions. She also does a really great job of explaining what products you should be using and why. I used to be one of those people that only went to the salon twice a year but I've really been learning the importance of maintenance. Not to mention the head massages during shampooing are enough to keep me coming back! This past experience I went in for a pretty drastic change. I cut about 6-7 inches off my hair and I love it!!!! It's going to take some getting used to but it's always fun to switch it up every now and then! Paula took the time to teach me how to create effortless looking beach waves... I probably still can't do it but I appreciate her taking the time to show me! I've seen some of the other work from other stylists in the salon and they are all good. I've been trying out a couple of different salon's around Indy and have finally found my favorite! Jackie did an awesome job! She started out by asking a little about me and my hair habits. We then moved in to the wash room where she gave me the most relaxing head massage. After, we returned in front of the mirror where she cut my hair and we enjoyed great conversation. She described the products she was using on my hair without pushing me to buy them which I felt was very professional. The salon is very clean and the entire staff is so friendly! This salon is lovely. I desperately needed a haircut and after hearing a bunch of positive reviews, I gave Salon 6 a call. The woman who answered was super friendly and got me in the SAME day with Jordan, my stylist of choice! Parking was easy to find and when I walked in, the place had a modern and relaxing ambience. Jordan came and got me right on time and she was friendly and obviously invested in figuring out what I wanted. I hadn't had a haircut in awhile so my hair seriously needed some help. I described what I was going for- that I wanted to keep my hair long but cut/layer it to make it more flattering and Jordan clearly understood what I was going for. She did a wonderful job cutting/styling my hair and was also very sociable. My hair is straight and extremely thick, so she did a great job cutting it into a manageable style. I'll definitely be coming back in ten weeks for another cut from her! read more
