I am extremely picky when it comes to my hair. In my 40 years on earth I've paid everything from $150-$300 per visit for cut and color. In the past year, I've become well versed in coloring my own hair with salon quality products and have perfected my technique over several years. TBH I was nervous to book a place for a cut only, because I was worried I'd be shamed about the fact that I highlight and tone my hair myself. This has been a necessity due to our budget and the fact that I have two kiddos and a hubby who works very hard, so it's hard for me to carve out 3-4 hours every few months for a hair appointment (yeah that's how long it normally takes). Jacque was very warm and inviting, super friendly. I was completely honest about my hair journey and the fact that it's naturally wavy, but I sometimes flat iron it, curl it with a curl iron, or do the heatless curls. Sometimes I wear it my natural texture. Life has got in the way so much that's it's been a full 10 months since I last had my hair done. She was honest with me that I needed to cut off at least two inches to cut off the damage which is normal after nearly a year of heat, no trims, and chemical damage. She had a lot of tips and tricks for me for when I color my hair at home, which I appreciate so much, as well as some tips and tricks for me for styling and using my newly bought velcro rollers. I appreciate her so much. I felt like I was having my hair done by my favorite auntie, she felt like a friend instantly. In the past 20 years that I've lived in Indy I have come across a small amount of salons that were snooty and I felt so out of place. Jatas was simple, clean, warm, and inviting at a great price. With two kids in daycare right now, I appreciate the affordability of this establishment and I rebooked for a few months from now. I have more confidence to highlight my hair myself, but will also be dedicated to getting more frequent trims to keep my hair healthy. Thank you Jacque! read more

I have been going to Jenn at Jata's for several years now. In the past year, I've also converted my hubby and his 16-year-old daughter over to Jenn. I have what is almost Asian hair: thick and straight but with enough bend that it just naturally begins to form a "bob" once it grows past my chin...and I have lots of it! Jenn is the only person I have found who can cut my hair the way I like it no matter what the length-of-the-moment is for me. I think she is a genius when it comes to short do's - I ALWAYS get tons of compliments when she gives me one of her super-short, spiky wild coifs. She has even managed to take my better half from his ultra-conservative, $7 walk-in hair studio do to decidedly more modern and flattering look...not an easy task considering his baby-fine, thinning locks. Jata's is not too big and is conveniently situated on the west 86th St. corridor, just down from Trader Joe's, so you can shop after for goodies after your runway redux! The salon also has nail and spa services. I've not partaken of either yet, but the nail and skincare estheticians appear to have quite a loyal following. read more

I went for Carly at Jata's and I absolutely loved it! My hair was in such bad condition! I hadn't gotten a hair cut in months, and my dead ends were ridiculous! She fixed it right up and I just left with the healthiest and best cut I have had in a really long time! I defiantly will be going back and I am going to tell all my friends about it and defiantly think every college student, adults and anyone in between should go there! After my first visit, I have never returned to the the national chain hair salons. Two years ago, I needed to set up an appointment to get my nails and my hair done for my friends' wedding. The staff was able to schedule me in quickly with appointments that were convenient for my schedule. Amy has been my hair stylist. I recently discovered Jata's, mostly because it's in the same strip as Trader Joe's (food Mecca). Imagine my surprise when I walked in and they took me almost immediately. Then, while Ashley cut my hair, Megan came over to say hi! Megan owned my fave Indy salon in the early 2000s. She's my stylist now, again. She's excellent. The energy and music are great, the front desk is responsive, and I can call on a Sunday evening to leave a message asking for a call back and an appointment. My only problem has been with some uneveness in back and on the sides. Highly recommended. read more

I should be giving this place 0 stars but that's not an option. From the moment I walked in today I was not impressed. Staff was completely unprofessional; continuously answering personal phone calls while with clients. Super disappointed in the way my hair color turned out. I showed stylist Carly a picture of what I wanted my hair color to look like and it looks nothing like the picture. What should've been a beautiful ash brown to ash blonde ombré is now chunky brassy highlights all over my head. Can't believe I payed almost $200 for this disaster. It's Christmas Eve and I'm pretty much embarrassed to go see family now. Needless to say I won't be returning and will be calling on Tuesday for a refund. read more

If you are of another ethnicity (not white) and your hair is curly, DO NOT go here. I paid $50 for shampoo, hair cut and blow dry. Ripped off! Not worth a penny I paid for the terrible state my hair was left in. The stylist even said "your hair is too damaged" to justify his/her lack of skill dealing with ethnic hair. Seriously, I think all these stylists come from Aveda school or some other crap school. I had never saw a stylist use a flat brush to straighten curly hair until I moved to Indiana. TERRIBLE TECHNIQUE ! I will never go to a white person salon again. read more
