Just had a great experience here with Karin. I have LONG dark hair and wanted ombre and a cut. After explaining I'm a color virgin and showing a picture, we got to work. The color wasn't exactly what I envisioned but it's GORGEOUS and I love it. Karin took lots of extra time to make sure everything was blended perfectly and had to do my tips twice to get them really blonde (and got me tea while we waited for the color to set), and the effort really paid off. It looks completely natural, despite the fact that nature could never recreate this on an Asian person. The cut, although fairly minimal, is also lovely. I usually end up tweaking my hair myself once I get home, but not this time. And from what I've read about ombre coloring, the price was pretty good too! I regret walking into this salon. I was excited to book with a specific stylist, and walked in to find somebody else assigned to do my hair. I told her what I wanted, and she refused to do what I asked for. I should have walked out, but I decided to settle. And what I settled for isn't even what I got. I needed my hair bleached, and the bleached parts were totally uneven, which led to uneven patchy color, that faded into more uneven gross and now lighter pieces, after ONE wash. I walked out unbelievably dissatisfied, thinking it looked bad to begin with, and I'm just enraged about it now.. looks like a total amateur did it. On top of that, my stylist was extremely aggressive with pushing products on me, literally shoving them into my hands and insisting my hair wouldn't look good if I didn't buy these products, and made a joke when I told her I just recently spent a lot of money on salon quality products. Sorry, but I already struggle to make ends meet. I felt intimidated and ripped off, and after telling my boyfriend about my experience, he came over to the salon and defended me and was quite angry on behalf of me. Thank goodness I had someone to speak up for me. She reduced the price of the service because of all the products I was forced into buying, and when I returned them, I was charged a ridiculous price that did not match the quality of my service. Both my daughters went to Salon Lotus today for the first time to do highlights and blow dry. Before we took the appointment, we checked the prices and we were told it will be $85 for partial highlights and $20 for blow dry. When my daughters arrived to the saloon, the stylist started right away working on one of them. Less than an hour later, the stylist stepped away to give a haircut to a costumer for over 30 minutes while my daughters waited patiently for him to be done. After he was done, the stylist continued working on my daughters, and once again, stepped away to give a haircut to another costumer for another 30 minutes! That's ridiculous, they spent over 4 hours at the Salon. Then when it was time to pay, they were both charged $140 each, which is $125 highlights and blow dry, and $15 for extra color. Just to clarify, the stylist never told my daughters about charging for extra color, he only told them while he was already applying the color that he was doing two tones of blond for more contrast, he didn't say anything about the charge nor asked them if they were interested. I will never return to this place as they are dishonest, even tough the highlights came out beautiful. read more

I got a Brazilian bikini wax here via a living social deal. I think this may have been one of the best wax jobs I have ever had. The girl was very nice and professional. The wax had (relatively) very little pain which was most appreciated. This was certainly the most thorough job I have ever had done. She left everything extremely smooth, and went back to give everything a look over and remove some ingrowns. Additionally, my skin did not become irritated afterwards, as is often the case for me. I really don't enjoy writing a bad review, especially when the service provider seemed like a nice woman, but this review is about service, not personality. I rely on reviews to make my own choices, so I feel I must offer up this info, however negative, to others who are considering a facial here. I got a facial this week with Maya. I had a groupon (thank God) and was looking forward to a nice, relaxing hour of facial rubdown. What I got is less than an hour (I was half way to my car when the hour mark ticked off, and that was with delays at checkout). The woman, Maya, seemed nice, just very unprofessional. Here are my gripes: she didn't take any general information before hand and even had to ask my name again mid-facial, she brushed on products instead of using her hands and repeatedly got the product on my eyes and lips (and scolded me for touching my face when I tried to wipe it off), when she did touch my face to rub in products, she had on latex gloves which felt disgusting and made horrible schlucky latex plastic rustly noises which grossed me out even more, she left the room twice while I had product on my face for 10 minutes (I really think their entire attention should be towards you and esthiticians should give you mini massages during this time), she MADE A CELL PHONE CALL at one point while I was sitting with goop on my face, she rubbed repeatedly in one small area before moving on, in short, firm, hard strokes: i.e. NOT relaxing and really rather annoying, and trust me I love the diversity this city has to offer, but there were several times when I couldn't understand her due to ESL issues, she misidentified my skin type and only performed extractions on my nose, never even examining other areas (there's a whole lot of face skin besides what is on your nose!), she put on a product THEN a mask on top (...why I never! that's just so not right) then to top it off, she hovered while I was paying, obviously waiting to be tipped because she didn't even bother pretending to have another reason to be in that part of the salon. In addition, the treatment room (I hesitate to call it that because it wasn't a treat, more like a procedure/going to the dentist) itself was not impressive. The painted details were odd (like XMAS ornaments dangling), there was water damage on the ceiling next to a pipe, she didn't dim the lights except for once near the end (holy NOT relaxing, but who can relax anyway to the sound of squishy latex gloves rubbing your face), she forgot the below the knee pillow initially (about 20 min), then when she did put it under, she put it right to the skin (instead of under the sheet like they usually do) and it was FREEZING, there was just a thin sheet for a cover instead of the usual cozy blanket (and heated table - ah, yeah, no to that too), when she was shaking products, it literally made the bed shake so not too sturdy bed, when the AC went on, it made some shelf on the wall buzz (again - NOT relaxing), and she had on a tick-tick-tick oven timer (AGAIN, NOT relaxing), and she played an Usher CD which began to skip in the middle and they she restarted so we heard all the same songs we had just heard, again. And there was no sink. I'm always just sort of disgusted thinking that they must be rinsing their cloth in that one bowl, then rewetting my face with what-is-now-no-longer-clean water - ewww. I has actually taken advantage of their groupon-customer add on specials and booked a hair color too, but after the facial, I was trying to bolt out of there as fast as I could. The hair might be a lot better, but I was too unhappy to find out and they didn't even realize that I had another appointment, so I was totally off the hook. Lastly, they tell you when you make the appointment that tips are only in cash, but when I asked for change for a $20, they had absolutely no change in the register and the esthitician had to go fishing in her purse. Very unprofessional again. Really, I hate to be so negative, but a facial SHOULD be a treat and I just wanted to get out of that place. They need to raise their standards of professionalism and better train the service providers (well, at least the one I had). There are FAR TOO MANY salon spas in this city to survive otherwise. Be wary of using a Groupon. I had a Groupon for cut and highlights. They then added on toner $20.00, which I was aware that they would do as they did this when I had my hair done the year before. Apparently hair will be brittle and brassy without it. But what they added was a new charge- $40.00 to cover my roots. My highlighting was a little bit lighter than my natural color. If I didn't have roots I wouldn't need highlighting. Have never had a separate fee for toner and root coverage. I had discussed lowlights and turned it down and thought that was the $40 mentioned. They were also weird when I called to use the Groupon. Cut and highlights were fine, but I have no idea how much I would be "clipped" if I use them again. Why did I need a special $40 color this year when last year I did not with the same type of highlights? There is definitely something going on with the prices. Is it that they are pretending to honor the groupon prices and charging full price? Has anyone who didn't have a group on experience bait and switch with the prices? Tips for the business - if you are going to play games with Groupon don't advertise on it. 2. When a client walks in charge them the same quoted price when they walk out. read more

I am very conflicted about this review. I had a Groupon for a facial and facial waxing. I had serious trepidation after reading these reviews, but since it was already paid for and purchased, I did what I do best: kept an open mind and approached the service with no preconceptions. I was determined to have a wonderful experience. When I checked in I was pressured by the woman at the counter (who I learned is the owner) to sign in a guest book with ALL of my information--email, address, and phone number. When I simply put my name and address, she followed me back into the waiting area to have me fill out complete information. I found this a bit off-putting. But still I kept my chin up and eagerly anticipated what I was sure would be a great facial. I have had many facials in my life, some better than others, and I will say that this was much more "invigorating" than "relaxing," and didn't seem to address my particular skin issues (which may have been a function of the Groupon? Like they have a one-size-fits-all standard? Giving the benefit of the doubt.) My service was with Maya, who has been reviewed here before. I want to acknowledge that some of the complaints seem to have been addressed: the facial did take a full hour, she did not make phone calls or leave the room except when I was changing, the lights were dim and there was soothing music on, I didn't really notice the room as being so gross (it was dim and mostly I was lying down with my eyes closed), I had a knee pillow from the start, and she did extractions on my nose and chin and maybe a little on my forehead. She was, as has been noted, really really nice. The okay: She did examine my skin and talk to me about its texture. She did use gloves, which I didn't mind terribly, but I didn't have that relaxation that I expect from a facial. I don't remember whether she finished with a mask because she didn't tell me what she was doing. I feel like I spent a LOT of time with a bright light in my eyes without anything really being done to my face. I did get a hand massage, but only at the very end. The not so great: For the waxing procedure she didn't do it there on the table. She had me move to the salon area and sit in a hair stylist's chair, scrunched all the way down so that my head rested on a towel on the back of the chair. She proceeded to wax my face in full view of the other clients. That was horrible. I mean, truly truly horrible. Maybe it's just me, but I would rather walk out of a private room with my upper lip all red (clearly post-wax) than have it done in front of a room full of people. And overall my skin didn't look any better in the days and weeks afterward. A lot of my pores were still clogged and the texture of my skin was more dry than it had been at the outset. I don't know that I received any benefit from the facial, and I, too, had red marks all over my face for 48 hours from the extractions. So, what's my take-away? The job she did on the wax was excellent, but the experience was one I would never pay to repeat. I don't know why she couldn't have waxed me in the private facial room. The facial itself wasn't HORRIBLE, but I wouldn't pay for another one, so I guess that's really the most telling part. I feel awful because I wanted to be able to say great things about the experience, but I just can't. I probably should give only one star, but for her kindness and obvious improvement from earlier comments, you know, here's a second star. read more

I've been to Fata 3 or 4 times now for a haircut, and each time my hair has turned out really good! She was super patient with me to cut my bangs JUST the right length that I wanted. Plus, she is very sweet and easy to chat with. I noticed some previous bad reviews about the Groupon, but I had a perfectly fine experience with it. I was very unhappy with my experience here. I had bought a groupon for a haircut and partial highlights and when I tried to schedule an appointment a few months ago they could never do it when I called and kept saying someone would call me back to schedule which never happened. I then went somewhere else since the groupon wasn't expiring and just recently used my groupon. Although I was able to schedule the appointment this time when I called, I was not able to schedule it for a weeknight (I work near the salon) because the last appointment they have for a haircut and highlights is at 5:00 every night, which is not very convenient for working people. As soon as I got there I felt like I was constantly being upsold and nickle and dimed. First, they tried to sell me on paying extra for full highlights, explaining that their version of partial highlights is not very many highlights, although I always get partial highlights. I declined that. Then they told me because I didn't want just bleached blonde hair, that to get a combination of highlights and low lights would be an extra $45. I have used deals like this at other places and always get both highlights and low lights and have never been charged extra because they don't have to do any more work or use extra color, it's just half of one color and half of another. The manager then said she would give it to me for $25 "since you feel it is too much for you to pay." Then after I got the highlights done the hairstylist said I really needed a toner so the highlights would not be too bright, for an extra $20. So that was $45 I paid in addition to the price of the groupon. Like I said I have used these types of groupons at various salons before and have never had this kind of hassle or upselling. I did explain my concerns and my experience to my hairstylist, but all she said was that she was just a worker which I understand, but she apparently did not relay my concerns to the manager. I came here with a Groupon for a 60-minute facial with eyebrow waxing. Having had facials at several other salons, I would put this facial with Nala (that's what I thought her name was, perhaps this is the same person as the Nadyja mentioned an earlier review?) as the worst facial I've ever gotten. A full 24 hours later my nose is still red from her rough extraction and I have abrasion marks on the back of my neck (I think these marks were the result of her using a towel to lift and stretch my neck during the head and shoulder massage). Also, she used a brush to apply everything during the facial, with the exception of the lotion at the end. The only reason why I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is that she did a good job waxing my eyebrows. read more

Not knowing what to expect, I was immediately impressed by the warm greeting from staff when I walked in who offered me a cup of tea as I waited. Moments later a hairdresser, Damaris introduced herself and guided me to her chair. She was very friendly and patient when I described what i was looking for. I went in with a Groupon for a deep conditioning treatment, haircut, and style about two weeks ago. My stylist was Charlene, and long story short, she was amazing! My last stylist (from another salon) left my hair in ruins. I have never had so many split ends in my life! I've dyed & highlighted, permed, and heat treated my hair countless times, and I had never had bad split ends until my last stylist. Ironically, that visit was supposed to have been a deep conditioning treatment as well. Charlene, on the other hand, was a lifesaver (or a hairsaver). After the deep conditioning treatment, She put a great ton of effort into detangling every last split end on my head. She was very patient and didn't give up until my hair was completely smooth again. Then she proceeded to cutting and blow-drying my hair. I was also pleasantly surprised with the amount of time and care that Charlene put into styling my hair. At the end of the session, my hair was silky smooth again (it hasn't been this way for a few long months), and the haircut/style itself was incredibly cute. This is for all you ladies who like to keep it bare down there. The place that I normally go to just uses a honey wax that was starting to irritate my skin, so I hopped on the deal train to shake things up a bit. I found this gem as a Living Social deal--$25 for a Brazilian that's normally $50. So glad that I took a chance. The resident aesthetician, Vicki, is both adorable and very professional. She's fast (yay!), and uses an incredibly gentle wax that did not leave me with my usual verrrrrry tender skin. It was one of the least painful waxes I've ever had. Vicki asked all the right questions (no hair, some hair, would you like the back done?) and at the end was sure to point out the oil and the baby wipes that I could use if I needed them. I left a happy camper, with no hair, no residual wax and minimal tenderness. To make it even better, the receptionist had already done everything with Living Social, so all I needed to do was tip Vicki and be on my way. Will definitely go here again. read more

I sat in Jarmen's chair for the first time a little over two years ago with a history of stylist heartbreak and two demands: 1. I have curly hair that I want to be able to wear curly or straight. The cut must accommodate both looks with equal perfection. 2. I want the color to look like a better version of me (not different); If someone compliments my color/highlights, it means she's failed. The haircut was great, but even more impressively, the color was flawless! It was subtle, rich, and very similar to what it looked like when I was a kid. I like to dye my hair bright pink, something of a signature for me. I usually do it myself using various retail products. I decided, for a really important special occasion, to go ahead and spend the money at a good salon. Even though I had told the receptionist when I made the appointment, and the person who called me the day before, that I was getting a bright, when I got there the stylist was surprised, and did not have fresh product. She used an already opened and half used tube, it was not the correct color, and it was a brand that you can buy at CVS, not a professional product. She then spent the entire time questioning my haircut (I have an undercut-- she asked "why do have this haircut?"), and my color choice, despite the fact that she also had pink highlights. When she started to put the product directly into my untreated, unbleached hair I asked about it and she said "well that takes longer." OK, but that's why I came to a salon- to get it done right. The color has faded in less than two weeks, which not even the worst over-the-counter product will do (usually lasts 3 to 6 months). If you're someone who likes out-there style choices, don't go here. read more

I bought a Groupon for a haircut at this salon because I am currently in search of a new stylist. I have called them three separate times, and each time I have spoken to a new person who is incredibly rude. I was hung up on, the women that I have spoken to are short and curt, and on top of all of this, nobody seems to understand how to book an appointment! I have called three times and they are either unwilling or unable to book for an appointment. I was unaware that asking when a salon has openings was such a difficult question to answer...I have been trying to book an appointment for a week, have spoken to three different people and still have nothing on the books. I am currently attempting to get my Goupon refunded. Maybe this salon is good if you are a returning customer, but they clearly do not understand customer service for new customers.. I have been seeing Karin at Salon Lotus for around seven years now, and she never lets me down. I go to her for haircuts every few months and Keratin treatments every six months. Karin does a great job on both, taking her time to get the Keratin done right. While I rarely have a problem, I know that if I do she'll always make it right. I was given a coupon for a variety of services. My daughter spent $50 for this "spectacular package! Value over $300.00." **I had a 30 minute massage with an $18 required gratuity. My arms and legs broke out in a rash that lasted two weeks from the Aveda products used. **I had a 30 minute facial--no depth skin analysis or waxing, as included. Required gratuity = $18. Nala was hesitant to do much of a facial since my skin had broken out from the Aveda products she used during the massage. **I had a pedicure--no mini-manicure or hand massage & polish change, as included. Was charged $20 for a spa pedicure upgrade for which I did not ask and don't think I got. Required gratuity = $12. Very sloppy pedicure. And, really, $45 is what you charge for THAT pedicure? **I had a hair cut, blow dry & style--no complimentary conditioning treatment & foil highlights, as included. Required gratuity = $26. Hair cut was nice tho the stylist was very young. Total cost from their Menu of Services for the above that I received = $185. Total cash outlay for the services that I received = $144. They gave me a card for a $35 haircut. I may go back for that, but never for anything else! read more

Went here a couple of weeks ago for a Groupon deal. My stylist was Agnes, what a sweetie! She made me feel like a new person with the cut and color she did to my hair. I'm a new mom and had the same look for at least 2 years, I came to her with tints of blue in my hair because I tried bleaching and dying my hair with an at home kit 6 months prior. She, along with the manager , were able to get the blue out and give me gorgeous highlights. They have a great selection of Aveda products also as well as other beauty products. Really more like 4.5 stars. Got a great brow wax with Damaris today. I had a Living Social coupon, so it only cost $6. Yes, a great brow wax for $6. It's normally $12, which is extremely reasonable. Don't pay $30 for a brow wax at one of the "high end" spas in town, and for the love of pete, please don't go to a cheap nail parlor. You can afford $12 for a good wax. Why not 5 stars? Well, when I first walked in, it seemed like they were not prepared for customers yet for the day (and this was at 12:15). They sort of yelled back at me when I walked in that they would be right with me. They were not rude in the least, but I felt like I was kind of intruding on their prep time (and I couldn't see a chair or anything to wait in). They invited me back, and instead of doing the wax in a regular waxing room, she just had me sit in one of the hair stylist chairs and "scooch down." Not a problem per se, but it was a little odd and not the most comfortable of positions (but it's a pretty quick procedure). When I got Damaris's card afterwards, it listed her as a stylist and colorist, so I'm not sure why she was doing my brow wax, in her stylist chair no less, but hey, she did a great job and was super nice, so whatever's clever. read more

I have had long hair my entire life, except in 4th grade when some idiot threw gum in my hair and I had to get it chopped off. I think the trauma of that has kept me deathly afraid of going any shorter than shoulder blades. Jarmin totally understands my neurosis and never makes me feel nervous. In fact, each time I go, I have complete confidence in her hands. Plus, you can get all of the great Aveda products here and can usually get a parking spot steps from their door on the street. They are sooo nice, completely unpretentious, and made a tom-boyish gal like me feel comfortable. I'm no fashionista, and I live way south of Evanston, but I will make regular trips with my sister here to keep my hair from looking "sraggaly." Jarmen knows what I mean. read more

She cut my hair in literally 10 minutes and even accepted my expired Groupon. Never visit this place.. they treat customers with different attitude.i went in for a hair cut, set up with Jarmin and they switched it with some other stylist with out even consulting. and they put on the conditioner in my head and made me wait for 40 min, before washing it down. then they asked me to wait until the person who is supposed to cut my hair was done with her earlier client. i had to hold the damp towel over my damp hair for freaking 25 min before she asked me to come in.My entire head was paining by then. the stylist rough handled me holding my hair tight and just forcing my head in her direction with out asking me to move my head.. it was a freaking nightmare to be honest. I used to go to joseph miachels and the stylist edwin over there used to take such good care of my hair.. i am never leaving my old salon for these freaks. read more

I'm not sure how representative the experience was because I had a Groupon. A lot of the salons in the area seemed to be kind of pricey, so when I saw a Groupon for a cut, style, and deep conditioning treatment for $35 I jumped on it. I have (had) very long hair, so this deal seemed great. The normal price for that would be 60+20=$80. (Yay, Groupon!) The whole process took 1.5 hours, and the products used are Aveda. I had to schedule an appointment a week before, but that was fine with me. I actually received a call from the salon about 2 hours before my appointment asking me if I wanted to come in earlier, which was nice. When I got to the salon, I was greeted by a very friendly receptionist that processed my Groupon voucher right away. I then had to waited about 5 minutes, and they gave me tea to drink from. (If it matters to you, the tea tasted great to me, and was served in an actual mug, not a paper cup). The hair wash/deep conditioning was very relaxing, and it felt like a head massage to me. Then, while I sat with the heat on for the rest of the treatment, I got to relax and drink the rest of my tea. The haircut itself afterward was fine. If I paid full price, I would've been disappointed. I wanted layers and some side swept bangs, and while the bangs look great, my layers are meh. I have Asian hair, so some layering techniques sometimes make my hair look choppy. The stylist did my layering in two parts, and the two parts seemed very obvious, if that makes sense. My hair is very heavy, so what works great on others doesn't always work with mine. To be fair, the stylist asked me twice if I was okay with the cut during the process. When my hair was wet and from a glance, it seemed fine, but by the time I got home and took a closer look I realized it wasn't what I was used to. Since she gave me an opportunity to fix it, I can't take a star off from that, and she was very considerate and kind. At the end, the stylist also told me my 2nd visit would have a $35 haircut pricetag, so I'd go back but pay more attention to my hair styling. read more

I went to Salon Lotus today for an eyebrow tint and wax. Diana did a great job - she listened to what I wanted done and she checked in with me during the appointment about the color and the shape of my brows. I thought the staff was great. I just got my hair done here yesterday. Damaris did a great job. She told me she also has fine/thin hair, and she told me a bunch of tricks. She recommended highlighting my hair once or twice a year and wasn't pushy when I told her I wasn't ready to spend that much on my hair. Coming from Indiana, I'm used to paying $40 top for a wash/cut/dry. I'm still adjusting to Chicagoland prices. My hair looks great! I knocked off a star because I got the Groupon for $35 for a cut, dry, and condition. When I called to make the appointment and told them I'm a Northwestern employee, they told me I didn't have to get the Groupon because Northwestern employees get their first conditioning treatment for free. So, I wasted that money. Granted, I still saved money from what would have been a $48 cut (Northwestern employees get 20% off), but it would have been nice to know. I also kind of felt pressured to buy their phomollient (sp?). I have a huge bottle of volumizing mousse at home already, so I didn't need it, but I guess I will use this new Aveda bottle eventually. Because of Damaris and her excellent customer service and tips, I plan to go back. read more

I realized later that the cut was uneven and the stylist had not completely washed out the deep conditioning product (promotional deal with first time haircut.) This cut is not growing out well either. Not worth the price. read more

I've been here a few times now to get an eyebrow wax. The 2 people there that have done it have been inconsistent. As I type this, one of my eyebrows is shorter than the other. And I'm not happy about it. (The same person has done them before and they've been perfect so I don't know what the deal is.) Today, I waited a half hour from my scheduled appointment time until we started, and it seems that they are always running late. The owner is pushy when she tells you about their products and services, and she has also been downright rude to me. It seems the place is run haphazardly. The stylists are nice but I won't be returning. Guess I'll have to travel to Trim in the city for a decent wax. What a pain in the butt. read more
