I'm from New Bern and I just had my hair ruined on the 20th, on the 21st I saw Ainsley she looked at my hair and went over pricing (totally worked with me and understood that I just spent a ton of money the day before to get my hair ruined, adjusted everything she could to fit my budget) on the 22nd Ainsley had me in and out of her chair within 3 hours with the Dream hair I wanted! I'm a big fan of Salon Blu. I like getting my hair cut in a hip, fun atmosphere (shallow? perhaps, but be honest - it matters to you, too!) without paying the exorbitant prices you can get at so many of the other "trendy" salons in this area. What do I consider reasonable? $30-40 for washing, cutting, blow-drying and styling my shoulder-length-ish hair. I've been to 3 or 4 different stylists at the Brier Creek location over the past 2 1/2 years, and each time, I either get exactly the cut I suggested, or something much better - I even trusted them to give me bangs for the first time since 1988. When I moved from Morrisville to Durham, I tried a few salons that were closer to my home than Salon Blu, but I realized - it's worth the extra mileage to get exactly what I want. read more

Salon Blu is a great place to get your haircut with solid stylists that knows what they are doing. When I walked into Salon Blu the floor was clean, well laid out, and friendly. The desk was quick and attentive despite it being a busy Saturday. Which, sadly, is not always the case in some other places. My stylist, Jessica, was dressed well and had nice looking hair. Its great to see that because if they look good, they'll be able to make me look good. And I need all the help I can get! She understood what kind of style I wanted without explanation of what it was. From washing, cutting, to styling, I was well taken care of. Afterwards, I got a great cut that wasn't just a couple swipes of a buzzing hair clipper. Salon Blu is well priced and located. Got my hair cut by Susanna today and it was amazing. Not only do I enjoy the quality of the cut, but she is entertaining and keeps me laughing the whole time. When I first started seeing her she help me put together a plan of how to let my hair grow long on the top and keep the sides short so that I could style it in a way that looks professional for my job. Basically she invented the Macklemore before you ever heard "thrift shop". I asked stylist to make my shade lighter. Instead she made it much darker. I asked for highlights, then to lighten it up but she said she could only do a partial and messed it up totally. Also, you re better off to go to a fast service salon and pay their lower rates for a hair cut as the one I received was one you would expect from a place like that. read more

Being new to the area I was not sure where to go for my hair. After doing research on-line and seeing positive and not so positive reviews about many salons I decided to book an appointment with Kaitlyn at Salon Blu. Was looking to change up my hair color and also needed a cut. Kaitlyn was amazing. She took the time to listen to what I was thinking and look at pictures before giving her recommendations. I am beyond happy with how my hair looks. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because the service was a lot more expensive than what I figured it to be based on the pricing shown on the website. I will definitely be going back (next appointment is already scheduled). I would highly recommend the salon and Kaitlyn...just be prepared to pay more than what the online pricing shows. read more

I want so badly to give this place an awesome review...but I don't feel like I got what I paid for. I had previously been to Salon Blu for an eyebrow wax which was fine, and when my normal stylist at another popular salon in Brier Creek was booked for weeks on end, I decided to give Salon Blu another try. I booked my appointment with no issues. I was able to get in the next day, after 5 pm which was convenient for my work schedule. My appointment was with a stylist named Kaitlyn. I was told that a hair cut with her would be $56. I'll preface by saying that I have hair that is past my shoulders, thick, but not excessively so. I advised Kaitlyn that I had been growing my hair long for years, and enjoyed the length of it. Kaitlyn was friendly, talkative, and warm. My end result hair cut is okay, but I feel like I lost a lot of length because she added so many layers that I previously didn't have. I have Zooey Deschanel-like bangs that I am super picky about, and they don't look the same as they did before. They are much more blunt, and though I advised that that one side always has to be left slightly longer due to my cowlick, she cut them the same length, and sure enough, now my bangs are shorter on one side. It was slightly disappointing because I feel like I know my hair better than anyone else. When she took me to wash my hair, she asked if I typically did any intensive treatments at home. I said "no" so she said "Oh, well we can just do that here. I'll go get the treatment." I didn't think anything of it, since it was essentially a conditioner that stayed on for 5 minutes, and then when I got up I realized that I should have been a better consumer and realized "treatment"=$$. Still, I thought that she would have mentioned it if it were going to have an effect on my bill. When I checked out at the counter, the secretary was nice, but avoided eye contact as she told me my total.....$71.00. When I asked why, she said for the cut and the treatment, which she informed me was half off. Neat...so I paid $15 for a conditioning treatment that is normally $30 that I didn't ask for, wasn't told would cost me anything extra, and if I were asked and told that it was extra money, I would have declined. Overall, an okay experience, but I didn't appreciate the misrepresentation. I will not be returning. read more

I haven't had a haircut or color in years, so I went to Salon Blu hoping for a good/relaxing "me" time. I saw Kelsey, because I saw all of the good reviews she got here on Yelp. Well that was a mistake. First of all, she was all over the place and didn't give me a proper consultation. She wasn't even listening to what I was wanting. I was there for almost 3 hours for a basic cut and a halo. I thought she was going to give me all over highlights, but that clearly wasn't the case. After she finished with me, she kept on complimenting me and trying to make me feel really good about what she did to mask the fact that she did a sloppy job. Once i get home I realized that she was talking it up because it wasn't what I wanted AT ALL. She didn't even go over her prices, so at the end of it all, it cost me $200 for a cut and a halo! Two times in the in the past six months I have been treated extremely extremely poorly by the operators at this Salon. I made an appointment with a master stylist. When I went to the appointment three weeks later I was told that I needed to reschedule or work with an entry level stylist, the stylist that was to work with me was working with another person. As I had waited for the month and it took me an hour and a half to get there, thankfully the stylist that worked with me was quite good. Yesterday however after waiting three weeks to see the entry level stylist and confirming my appointment two days earlier via text. I was called 10 minuets (1:50) and told I had to reschedule because the stylist did not have enough time to do everything I requested. I suggested that she do what she can and I can do the rest. The girl who called me said that the stylist was not willing to that and that I could make an appointment at there other locating 30 minutes further away or reschedule. The audacity of this shop and the blatant racism in 2021! They should be ashamed, but people like the one ones that work there an their self appointment of entitlement. Now even if they offers me a FREE service there is NO WAY I would ever trust them again,,, be forewarned. The sad thing is, I had even recommend them to other people . read more

I've been going to Salon Blu for years. Generally, I've had a mostly positive experience, except recently when I booked an appointment with the Salon's Master Level Designer Katie for my mom for Mother's Day. I usually go to a level 2 designer myself, but since it was Mother's Day, I decided to splurge on my mom. I will admit that my mom is very picky (especially when it comes to her hair), but I thought a Master Level Designer could easily accommodate any difficult requests I was wrong. Katie kept telling my mom that she couldn't guarantee that her hair would turn out red (the one color my mom didn't want) and she also couldn't guarantee that my mom's hair wouldn't fall out. I know my mom's hair is dry and heavily processed and treated, but is that the best a Master Level Designer could do? What about the stylists who treat Julia Roberts' hair or other celebrities? Can they not accommodate drastic requests as well? I think that's the reason you pay top dollar for a stylist... but what do I know. When Katie told my mom her hair might fall out, that's when we left Salon Blue and went to Samuel Cole (off Strickland) at the suggestion of a friend. My mom had a consultation with a very nice level 2 designer and after a lengthy consultation, the stylist recommended a color correction service before she offered the other services. That's something Katie never even mentioned to my mom. Maybe she doesn't know how to do it.. who knows. Anyway, I could clearly see the difference in the level of knowledge, expertise and customer service between Katie and the level 2 designer at Samuel Cole. I was surprised and disappointed that paying more money doesn't necearrily mean you'd be getting top service at a Salon. I also noticed how the level 2 designer at Samuel Cole touched my mom's hair and spent a good amount of time discussing options... verses Katie's consultation where she was constantly looking at her watch. I thought this review might be helpful for people contemplating whether to up their service at Salon Blu or anywhere else. In my opinion, it isn't worth it. read more

Underwhelming at best. I went there with a groupon for "partial highlights", and was told this entitled me to 14 foils. I could, however, upgrade to a "Half head highlight" for an additional $20. what started out as a good deal ended up as a full price disappointment. The stylist took off a good four inches when I asked for one to one and a half. At least I got a free diet coke. I visited the Brier Creek location, but since that doesn't have a yelp entry, I have to make due with this location. So I call in asking what their prices are for a standard men's haircut. A woman tells me that it depends on they stylist and they are rated 0-6, 6 being the best and the price goes from $23-40 accordingly. But here I am thinking that I'm just a simple guy who needs a simple cut. I like the standard bed head messy look, you know the one. It's the one they teach in salon school right after the buzz cut entry lesson. Also, what kind of guy needs a $40 hair cut. My previous stylist did a fantastic job for only $25, but she was booked three weeks in advance. Anyways I make an appointment at noon for a level 1 cut. I walk in and the place seems nice enough. The stylist is ready on time, which is nice. She takes my coat and I sit down on their semi-broken chair. But I'm not picky. I notice the stylist is very young and seemingly very inexperienced. That's fine though. We discuss for a moment what we want to do and I warn her to be careful that my head has the tendency to get a mullet if they do it wrong. She looks at me like she doesn't know what a mullet is. Anyways, after washing up, she snips a small part of my hair and asks me if the length is ok. At this point I don't really know because I can't extrapolate that small clipping to my whole head. I tell her to cut at least another inch off and see where we were from there. I hadn't gotten a cut in a while so my hair was pretty shaggy and I wanted it much shorter. She starts working over the back. I have to ask her to reduce the length again. Once she gets it to a comfortable shape, she starts with the top. She finished with about 3-4 inches on top, the hair somewhat floppy and asks if the length is alright. I wanted something I can put product in and this is far too long for that. I have her cut it another half length. Maybe she was intimidated to cut so much hair off, but I gave pretty clear instructions as to what I wanted done. She finished up and I notice the length in the back is longer than the front. She gave me a friggin mullet. We have to go over it 3 more times until I get something that is only satisfactory. She rinses me out and starts to apply product. She puts more in the back and the sides than she does the top and when she does the top, she presses down the hair? Who does that when I asked for a messy bedhead look? I take it to myself to get it done and really just want to leave at this point which is an hour and fifteen minutes since I first arrived. They ring me up and it's $26 which is what I thought. The cashier asked if things went ok and I emphasize on the 'only ok' part. She asks what was wrong and I told her it took a long time. She apologized for the experience but it was too little too late. This should have been very simple. In and out sort of experience. Instead I got a great clips style haircut from a novice for the price of an actual stylist which took twice as long as it needed to. Oh and when I got my coat back, it was covered in other people's hair. Needless to say, I won't be making a return visit at the same or any different price group. read more

ASHLEY IS THE BEST!!!!! I have been going to Ashley for about two years now for cut and color. She has layered my hair, cut my hair short, given me bangs, highlighted, colored it dark...basically she has done it all. She is also ALWAYS very informative about how she thinks a color or cut will look and tweaking it to your skin color and face shape to make it look good on you. She is also so much fun to talk to! I never trusted stylists before because for the most part I have had OK to down right horrible experiences. I am so confident in everything she can do I have sent about 6 different friends of mine to her, guys and girls, who are now regulars of hers as well. She is by far the best one around. The salon itself is nice, well kept, not over the top glam, but clean and modern! I would highly recommend Salon Blu especially because of Ashley. I absolutely love my hair and I appreciated the time, patience and skill level that Keisha spent on me. I'm new to Raleigh and this salon was referred to me. First let me say the gal that cut my hair - kelsey I think - was very nice and we had a good consultation. In the end the cut was just "ok" - I will not be going back but it's not because of her - she was lovely. When I walked in the place was filthy. Dirty floors and used towels every where. The couches are blue leather and cracked - it's like they were purchased at least 10 years ago and they have seen a lot of wear - I could barely even get off the couch when they finally called my name. There was NOTHING to read while waiting and nobody even offered me anything to drink. even though I waited about 15 -20 minutes for my stylist. During that wait time, I saw a lot of really bad color - even on the stylists - they are a Redkin salon so that may explain it. The place is extremely sterile in that there is no personalization of the cutting area and was very cold in the space too. The real issue was that I had a freezing COLD head wash - the hot water heater was out and evidently had been not working for some time and there was snow on the ground. Also the towel that was used to dry my hair had several holes in it. Quite honestly if was the owner or manager I would have offered my clients either a discount or a free product - especially to a first time client. The pricing was inexpensive to moderate compared to my former salon. I used to pay $75 for a cut - I paid $35 I think at Salon Blu. I don't color, high light or perm my hair - I will pay for an excellent cut though. Very disappointing experience. Trying Blo next! read more

This review is a bit overdue. I got my hair cut by Kelsey after seeing the beautiful haircut of a coworker/friend of mine. I have long hair and have had the same hair stylist for 6 years in California. I was nervous that I would not find someone on the East Coast who could work with long hairstyles (without massacring it!). Kelsey was fantastic and such a sweetheart. I loved my haircut and got many compliments! She listened to my preferences and I was so relieved. I am unfortunately moving. Had high hopes but was so disappointed and will not return. Went in asking for a bayalage - the stylist proceeded to put my hair up in little ponytails and apply bleach to the ends. Now I had a bayalage before and I knew this wasn't the tradition technique but what do I really know? After letting the bleach process she toned it and that was it. I ended up with a brassy yellow horribly unflattering tone. Once my husband took a picture of the back I realized she had given me what looked like a one toned ombré that had been growing out for months. I was leaving town that week (of course right?!) so I called to set up a "free" re-process for when I returned. I would be gone for their allotted "complementary" re-process time period but a manager graciously granted me an appointment upon my return from my trip and made a note for the exception in the appointment calendar. My second appointment was no better. Even though I asked her to color my hair she toned it from blonde to a light ash brown (that would wash out in 4-6 weeks) and then tried to charge me full price for the visit. This resulted in an extremely awkward and unprofessional exchange with the manager and stylist at the front desk. It turns out this manager had gone in to the appointment calendar and erased the note without contacting me or asking the other staff about it. And they still ended up charging me for the blow dry portion of the appointment! How are you supposed to know if you hair color is "fixed" when it is soaking wet? This place is expensive, the staff is unprofessional and the stylist had no idea what she was doing. STAY AWAY! read more

I just moved to the area and went to Salon Blu based on a recommendation. I was very nervous because I was getting blonde highlights and have had some horrible experiences in the past. I am naturally blonde but my color is not as bright as I would like which I solve my getting highlights. I have found that it is very hard for stylists to color my hair in a brighter color that still looks natural. When I came to the salon I told Sophia what I was going for, she understood me right away. I am very happy with the color she chose. It is the perfect amount of brighter blonde hair that doesn't look bleached out or the weird yellow tint that can also happen. I will definitely be a repeat customer! read more

My daughter wanted to go someplace different to get her hair done. So while in Brier Creek, we stepped in to check out Salon Blu. Needless to say, this will be my first and last visit to this place! The customer service there was horrible! I told the lady that my daughter simply needed her hair shampooed, blow dried, trimmed, and flat ironed. I explained that her hair is really long, (at least 20 inches) and I know that the charge would be a bit higher than usual because of the length. Before I could even finish, the receptionist tells me no one there could do her hair. Then she tells me to wait. She goes to the back and comes out to say that the only person she would even let touch my daughter's hair had gone for the day. I tell her no problem and asked for the starting rate for the services I asked for! Well....she looks at my me then my daughter and says, "Well, our prices START as $51.95." I tell her ok that I fine. Then she says, "She will need to see either Keisha or Keyona." I asked was there anyone else there who could do her hair, not today, but AT ALL. She told me that they were the only two people that she would let touch my daughter's "type" of hair! What??? I cocked my head to the side and just as I stop myself from having a Madea moment, she says, "You will need to schedule a consultation for tomorrow." As I am explaining to her why I can't make an appointment for that day she cuts me off and says, "What time would you like to schedule your consultation?" While I am explaining to her that I CAN NOT schedule it for Saturday and perhaps Monday is better, again, she cuts me off to say, "Here, take a card and give us a call when it's convenient for you and you will need to only see Keisha or Keyona." Salon Blu has a sign in the window that says "Brazilian Blowouts". Now, that is not what we wanted, but I am sure that there is/was someone there who could have simply looked my daughter's "type of hair" to give me an estimate. How hard is it to blow dry, trim, and flat iron curly hair? Yeah, that's my daughter's "type of hair"! The truly sad thing about it is, she was considering using this salon when she did her 20-inch hair donation to Locks of Love photo shoot. That, Salon Blu, is no longer an option!! read more

I usually get a good experience when I visit salon blu, but not today. I loved the friendly vibe from the lady at the front desk, however I was not impressed with my stylist. As she was washing my hair she noticed that I had missing hair and asked me if I just had a baby. I'm sorry, but I did not feel that was an acceptable reason to ask a woman. First off, that's rude and none of her business. And it was clear she was embarrassed because there was no conversation as she was cutting my hair. Very disappointed. Horrible cut - uneven and sheared which is not what I wanted at all. Shared with the management the disappointment. They agreed it wasn't right. Kept saying they'd call higher manager and get back to me. Crickets. No responses whatsoever. Terrible customer service. Highly recommend you consider another salon. i've been going to kaitlyn for about half a year now, and she's the best hair stylist i've found in the triangle since i moved here about five years ago. i've had extremely underwhelming experiences elsewhere. kaitlyn is super nice and friendly, and very talented. she's a great listener and is great at answering any questions you may have before she gets started. she's also not afraid to give her opinion, which i feel is an important characteristic for a hair stylist! i started with super blonde highlights to brighten up my blonde and they turned out great. i highly suggest the "smudging" technique they use to get the highlights as close to your roots as possible, which gets you a little more time in between visits to the salon. i trusted kaitlyn so much, that on my last visit, i decided to go from blonde to red and I LOVE IT! she knew exactly what to do to get my super blonde hair (with a few inches of dark roots), to a lovely copper/auburn shade. kaitlyn even managed to give my ultra-conservative mom a hairstyle she loved while she was in town for my wedding. she is great with all types of hair styles! i highly recommend this salon, everyone is really friendly there. the prices are on the high side...but it's worth it in my opinion to go to someone who you can trust with your hair and who knows what they are doing. read more

First let me start by saying when I first went to blu I had a good experience. I always tip well for a job well done and sometimes just for the sake of graciousness. However my last haircut at blu was performed by someone that seemed to have something else on her mind than cutting my hair. Aside from that the biggest issue I have had as of late started with my last two appointments. About a month ago I secured a walk in appt. I was called back to move the appt t another time to which I was amenable. However, I was put on hold for 15 minutes. When the girl finally came back said that I couldn't have my appointment because they had a wedding party coming in. Guess first come first serve doesn't apply when $30 vs 300 bucks comes into play. I was very angry and expressed that I was and that I may not likely come back in. Sooo....fast forward to today. I figured I would give them another chance. I called in set an appointment for 10:30 Saturday. A few hours later I was called back and told that I made comments at my last visit that made the girls uncomfortable??? To me this implied that I made some sort of harrassing comments ?? For the life of me I can't think of anything I said other than to tell the girl how I wanted my hair cut. I will never truly know because they wouldn't tell me. So be it. So in short, make sure that they don't have a wedding party coming in the day you set an appt to get your haircut and don't express your displeasure when they cancel your appointment over someone else. BLU mgmt....let me share something with you. You are NOT the only game in town. There is a much better salon across 70 where they don't treat their customers like commodities. And rest assured, people will read this and I will make sure to tell everyone I know about my experience at your salon. Remember...being snooty and behaving this way is not good for business...if you don't take care of your customer someone else will and that customer will tell everyone. read more

This place is super expensive. I really like the couple of people that have done my hair and usually do a great job (which for the money you drop they better do good!) but, everything seems rushed and it's so loud in there, even when there's not a ton of talking the music is blaring and I feel like I have to yell for my stylist to hear me. The very worst thing is that when you get a color session, blow dry and style are NOT included!!!!! Who is okay with leaving with wet hair and not knowing what their color looks like dried?! That's completely absurd to me and I've never heard of a place doing that before. You would think when you're paying more than $200 for a set of highlights that a simple blow dry would be included...but not here!!! read more

This is my first less-than-5-stars review. This salon does not live up to it's reputation, or to it's prices. I am sure there are stylists that do a better job than those that I have had, but I would prefer not to bounce around to all of them until I find the one I like. I was going to Stephanie, whom I thoroughly enjoyed. However, when she left, I was not impressed with anything else about the place. They offer a great referral program, but that's about it. I went in for a bang trim, and came out with a totally different haircut. My husband likes his hair shaggy and, unfortunately, he always came out with a faux hawk. Aside from the services, the lobby and seating area is awkward and uncomfortable. I understand the contemporary theme, but interior design can be hit or miss - this is a miss. I'm sure there are some wonderful stylists there who do a great job, but I have not found one. I am currently going to a different salon that I find to have much better results!
