She did such a great job on my hair she did exactly what I wanted even though the picture was slightly different she did what was good for my face. This was such a different experience for me because I'm used to going to places like Supercuts. This is no Supercuts that's for sure. I'll say this, this was worth every penny that I paid. I was looking at a HUGE change because my hair had been medium-long and brown all my life. I did a LOT of research and pulled together a Pinterest board before I went in. A party of six of us went to Lather for my friend's wedding - the bride, the bridesmaids, plus the mom - we all got different hair styles and makeups by Whitney, Lauren, and Jessica. None of us got our hair cut but it was so obvious that Whitney and Jessica knew their hair. I didn't talk to Jessica but I liked what she did with my friends' hair. Whitney - she is so friendly and quick. She asked us what we wanted, we showed pictures, and she created. Lauren did most of the makeups, and wow. When I arrived, I heard laughter and joy from the staff. I was greeted and immediately asked if I wanted something to drink. A few moments later David came out and greeted me as my stylist. His personality is infectious And he had me laughing the whole time . We chatted and laughed some more as he cut my hair and did an amazing job. I've been to this salon twice already after 8 months since I had my hair in a pixy cut from another hair salon. The first time I came into this salon was because I wanted to try a different look by having ombré in my hair. So, my first time getting an ombré/first time in the salon. It wasn't so great to be honest. The lady didn't want me to have the hair color that I wanted for my ombré but REALLY insisted that I get a color that brighter than I wanted it to be. Being new to it, I decided to go along and got it. Afterward, I was slightly happy because I got my ombré but not the tone of color that I was hoping to get. The second time I came was a lot better. I got a new stylist and this time she was easy-going with the color I wanted this time. Not only did she let me get the hair color I want. She was patient enough to deal with my awkward silence (because I made an appointment early in the morning, and I was still slightly sleepy. Hehehe!). The second time I got my hair ombré was better and the color was perfect. She also did a job well done with the cut and style. Also I was happy she let me do a before and after pictures, which was also my first. Overall, it was a great experience. Don't worry if it doesn't go well the first time. After reading some reviews and seeing some pictures of Heather's work, I decided to drop by to get a consultation done. I was a little surprised at first at the cost because it was steeper than I expected but Heather helped me understand why it might seem pricey and she was very sincere! She encouraged me to shop around if I wanted to before making an appointment with her - I decided to just go ahead and schedule a color appointment and I'm glad that I did. I left very happy with my balayage. Since I have dark hair and I was lightening it up, a few pieces in the front didn't get as light as we would have liked. I came in for a complimentary follow up to get the front pieces a bit lighter which was super nice! Heather is so personable, you will have plenty to talk about during your sessions. I highly recommend dropping by for a consultation with her if you are looking to get some color work done, she wants you to love your results and will do her best! read more

This was my first time at Lather and was excited to get my hair done due to the 4 star rating and the great reviews. Varenka did my hair, I love the haircut and the way she styled, even though it felt a little rough and dry at the ends, I don't know if it was the product she used. Anyways, I also went in to get it colored (balayaged). I liked the tone of color she used but in my opinion the end results is not what I was hoping for. I really wanted to like it but as the day passed I started to see some imperfections in the way the "balayage" was done. You can almost see some patches of color in some parts of mI think I'm going to have to get it fixed somewhere else. It's disappointing because I paid a lot of money and it didn't turn out the way I wanted. read more

Now I don't just hand this compliment out to anyone, but Katie is, in short, da bomb. As an Arab-American woman, I have really high-maintenance hair. Extremely thick, somewhat coarse, dry, wavy, (and did I mention THICK?!), it's not easy to tame. I've tried several stylists and have trouble going to a particular person more than once because, quite frankly, they just don't understand Middle-Eastern hair. I've been to her twice now and there was no learning-curve with Katie-- she instantly knew what to do and how to cope with my hair (despite her good-natured exasperation at the fact that it usually takes her at least 45 minutes to blow-dry my shoulder-length locks). She's also totally hilarious and a great conversationalist, which is an invaluable trait in a hairstylist, and one that's not always easy to come by. And perhaps most importantly, she doesn't push products on you. Sweet!! I can't recommend her highly enough. Oh, and the whole "liking them on Facebook" thing... go for it. They post discounts on their page all the time. I do love a bargain. read more

I've had two haircuts from Madison at this salon. The first time went pretty well. I liked the way she cut my bangs and my layers. She was friendly enough and the appointment went off without a hitch. I probably would've rated this place between 3-4 stars based on that experience alone. My second appointment, however, was a complete disappointment. I have had my hair super long for a pretty long time. I was ready to cut off a good chunk of it, and I wanted to go for something much more edgy than I was used to. I had brought in a picture and said, "I want my hair to look exactly like that." She seemed to have no hesitation in describing it, saying "Yes, we could do that." Well, after I told her where I wanted my hair to hit, she ended up taking about 2" more than that, for a total of 9.75" of my hair. The entire time she was cutting my hair she kept telling me it was going to look super cute. I believed her. Fast-foward to her blow-drying my hair, and her next appointment came in early. She told the next client 5 more minutes, and my hair had hardly dried. So I felt like I was being rushed near the end. When she finally wheeled me around, the cut itself was decent...but it looked nothing like the picture. It was nothing like I wanted. I had asked specifically for "rock and roll" verbatim, and I received country club, like Selma Blair in Legally Blonde. I asked her how to texturize my ends to make it look more like the picture, and she couldn't provide much assistance. I wouldn't probably rate this place except that I had cut my hair for my professional headshots and was going for a specific look, which she was unable to achieve. I want to go get it redone at another salon, but I don't have much hair left to do anything close to what I want. So now I'm stuck in the dreaded growing out phase. I just wish she had said something along the lines of "I'm not sure we can achieve that with your hair" or "how about something more like this" if it was out of her league. It's mainly a "customer asked for x, received y" situation. For now I'm just stuck dreading looking in the mirror at a persona I did not want to portray. I'd recommend this place for brow waxing or a trim, but beyond that, I'd say go elsewhere. read more

Jessica did my hair. Got a brazillian blowout and I thought it was pretty neat. Was used to getting a Dominican blowout and just didn't like that they Dominican didn't last through my zumba classes...LOL. The only complaint that I have is that when a customer says, hey my hair is super thick in an area and doesn't take well to any chemical treatments...listen. It really bothered me that I was ignored and that the conversation turned into a conversation saying...I've done this before and you don't need that much. I said, yes but I know my hair. After a huff and a puff a TINY and I do mean TINY bit more product was added. Needless to say the brazillian didn't last in the back of my hair. I was talking to a company that makes the brazillian products and the recommend another salon. I did go to the other salon and that is where I will stay. I would go back to Lather for a wash and cut....but not for a chemical treatment. I gave them a SECOND try and got a different stylist. I can say that she was better than the owner. Much more interested in listening. However, clearly not a salon that is used to dealing in a wide variety of hair. read more

This is a great way to choose services in a new city, so after moving here two years ago I started going to this salon based on the reviews on this platform and have been here several times with good results. That being said, my recent visit here was anything but pleasant. My hair will take some time to recover its healthy condition. As an AF veteran I try to support my fellow vets and have kept my regular stylist here but she has been deployed so I had been waiting for her return before doing any major changes. However after my family made comments I booked a new appointment. I had a clear idea for my new look, so I went on Pinterest and got pictures of what i had in mind to show to the stylist. I don't consider myself a wimp but i was in tears during this visit when my hair began falling out. Almost 5 hours later I left with nearly normal looking hair but with my scalp burned and a straw-like texture to it. The stylist also instructed me to not wash it for several days "for the oils to return". Fellow Yelpers...WAIT FOR IT....they gave me a 10% discount. SUMMARY: 1. The stylist was CLEARLY not up to the job and didn't even know it. 2. The "manager", backed up her stylist, saying that the change I requested ALWAYS takes multiple treatments to accomplish and that they tell this to the clients. NOT TRUE. 3. The owner is a businessman with no REAL insight of this industry(outside of the numbers). He relies totally on his "managers". So in a nutshell if you have any problems here.....TOUGH LUCK. read more

So, I'd heard really great things about Lather, particularly Jessica and Whitney via online reviews. In desperate need of someone to tend to my thick, curly locks apart from my stylist in High Point, I decided to try to find a local salon. Super excited, as I always am at the prospect of changing up my look, I got to my appointment just on time. The shopping center, for a Chapel Hill girl, was a little difficult to find but my GPS managed to get me there with 5 minutes to spare. The first thing that I noticed was a big sign outside advertising to 'Fan them on Facebook' get 30% off. Okay, a little blatant but a decent way to get noticed online. Jessica, the owner and my stylist, sits me in a chair and asks what I was looking for. She does take the time to give me a decent consultation. That was pretty much the extent of our conversation. Now I'm not the chattiest person but I at least like to feel like the stylist is paying attention to me. She stops mid shampoo to scold one of the employees for not refilling the conditioner bottles and spends most of the cut watching what's going on around her in the mirror. Well, it makes me believe that cutting hair is simple. The cut came out fantastic. It was the one redeeming quality of this salon. I was put off by that fact that as you lay back to get your hair shampooed, there are advertisements on the ceiling. I just felt over marketed to and under served as a customer. So I found Lather by looking around on Yelp. I usually get my long hair trimmed at a place like super cuts or Mitchell's, but I was wanting to go more drastic and get a short cut, this called for professionals! I called Lather after seeing the great reviews they had, to make an appointment. They had a slot open that day but it was with their highest level stylist, so $50 for a cut. I wasn't sure I wanted to pay that much for my first visit there, so I made an appt for the next day with an undergraduate stylist. An appt with the undergraduate was $38. A price I was more willing to pay! My appt was with Carley. I found their location fairly well, it's in a shopping plaza right next to carmax on hwy 70. I was greeted by a super nice receptionist, who gave me some first visit paperwork to fill out and even offered me water or coffee to drink while waiting, how nice!! Carley attended to me very quickly, we sat first and discussed the type of cut I wanted then headed over to the sink to wash my hair. While she washed my hair she also waxed my eyebrows (she did a great job, just remember to book it into your appt when you call). I asked about their gloss treatment, which is 50% off on Tuesdays, making it $10. She didn't have time to do it but I defiantly plan to schedule into my next appt! We then went back to her station where she cut my hair with ninja like precision, then she dried it and styled it. My hair looked AMAZING!!! She was really nice and easy to talk to through the whole appointment, and when it was done she wasn't pushy at all about buying any products. This place will hands down be my go to salon!! If an undergraduate did this good of a cut, I wonder how their top level is!!! read more

I have been getting my hair "did" here for several years. I love this place. Although Lauren has been my fashionista, every one there is so wonderful and treats me like I am one of their own. I tend to like a funky 'do' and have gone with blonde streaks (I am mixed Asian, so blonde on me stands out...just the way I like it), red, blue-black, and now dark black/red. Lauren is open to anything and loves to suggest new styles and colors for me, which I'm the type that's open to anything too. The staff are absolutely outstanding. They are super nice. I do tend to eavesdrop every once in awhile, especially to the older patrons, and they are so sweet and tender with every single one that comes into that salon. Their prices are super competitive for the unbelievable services they offer. The talent is top notch and they are constantly attending conferences and training. They are welcomed to use all their new techniques on me :). read more

I was able to make an appointment for the next day online, and my appointment time was precisely honored, which I really appreciate. The salon was clean, fresh smelling and calm. Everyone was super friendly - offered me drinks and chatted. Jess did a great job in asking what I wanted and how I usually styled my hair. Then she washed, cut and dried my hair. I've been putting off getting my hair cut, but I finally caved and called for an appointment today around lunchtime. Luckily, the stylist I saw last time, Lauren, had an opening this afternoon, so I was able to get same-day service! That makes up for the nearly week-long wait I had last time around. Lauren was patient with my frustration at my hair, gave me a couple of alternate options on styling my hair, and cut and blew my hair dry all within half an hour. Just wanted to leave a quick review for my hairstylist Heather. I have followed her from a couple other salons and can I just say it has always been worth it. Heather is an amazing stylist; she has been coloring and cutting my hair for almost three years and I don't think I could go back to seeing anyone else. I have wanted to change my hair color multiple times during the time I've been seeing her. She's taken my hair from blonde, to lavender, to purple, to red, to blue and back again. No matter what idea I want to try next Heather is always up for the challenge. I have a crazy schedule mostly due to my work, but she always works around it and finds a time that's convenient for me. I am pretty picky about how I want my hair to look, but she has never disappointed. My hair feels and looks just as healthy as the day we started. read more

I requested an appointment for Saturday afternoon on a Thursday. Luckily they were able to schedule me in with Madison. She was very friendly and "nailed it" on the color for highlights. She also did a great job on the haircut. I came out of the salon feeling and looking great. I would definitely see Madison again. I overheard the girl at the front desk working with folks on appointments and it seems that some of the more senior staff are fully booked a couple weeks out on certain days. So if you are planning to make an appointment, make it a couple of weeks ahead if you are wanting a Master or PhD stylist for a highlight/cut since it is a 2 hour task. read more

I had an appointment at the salon last night. First, my haircut looks great. I also came in to get a balayage color done after my appointment at another salon got cancelled. I called the salon to book an appointment and specifically asked for someone who was experienced in balayage (I saw some pictures that showed someone at the salon was good at it). It is clear now that the person I talked to on the phone was just trying to get an appointment booked. My hair color looks worse than when I came in and looks nothing like the picture that I showed. I have already booked an appointment at another salon to get it fixed tomorrow and I am very upset that I spent the money on it. I know that my stylist tried her best but was just not experienced enough at that type of color. The person who answered the phone to book my appointment is at fault. People spend a lot of money to get their hair colored. You should be honest about the skills of your stylists. Also, I was going to just write this in the survery I was emailed after my appointment, however the word limit didnt let me explain anything. Sorry for the negative review. read more

I found this salon because of great reviews on Yelp and felt compelled to add my own review! I went and saw Madison today and she did a wonderful job. I am very picky about my hair and have been to tons of stylists in Raleigh but have yet to find "the one." I have today! And the best part--$40 for a women's haircut! It was the best cut and best blow out I've had in Raleigh in 3 years. I will definitely be a loyal customer to Madison! UPDATE: Madison wasn't available on the date I needed a cut/color so I saw another stylist. She was a very sweet person but did a horrible job on my hair. The cut itself was literally crooked and the highlights were haphazardly placed and, after I washed my hair at home once, MUCH too light. There was even a piece in the back that absorbed too much dye and even after she blew it dry, she left it like that (did she not see it?). I had to come back a second time to have it fixed, but after I washed my hair twice it was too light again. I had to go to another salon to have it fixed for good. Hate that I wasted $165. The salon is cute and the girls are very nice, so I was really surprised by this negative experience. read more

I recently moved to Raleigh and had to find a new stylist. I found Lather through yelp and decided to give it a try. I went in for a haircut and a partial highlight. They were able to accommodate me within the same week. I had to get it done for a special occasion and did not have much flexibility with dates. I was OK with any stylist as all I wanted was a basic cut/style. The stylist was friendly. She asked me what I wanted to do with my hair. I explained what I wanted (which was pretty much stick to same style but trim) and she listened. I asked her if she had any thoughts/suggestions and she thought what I wanted would work for my face. She first did the color and I liked how it turned out. This was my first color experience and I don't have anything to compare with. But the color was pretty close to the color I wanted and that's all I cared! I was quite satisfied with the color experience. Had I walked out of the salon then this would have been a 5-star review. Anyways, she proceeded to cut my hair and thats when things started to go downhill. The cut was very rushed. Nothing about the cut - the length, the bangs, layers turned out the way I wanted. By the time she blow-dried my hair I was completely disappointed. I did tell her to make some changes and correct the bangs but I guess it just didn't cut it! So I am waiting for my hair to grow to be able to fix it. I did not even ask for something fancy, I have stuck to the same style for years so I know its not a complicated style or something very drastic. And this has easily been one of the bad cuts. I have almost waited a month to review this place in order to be as objective as possible. Have I had a better haircut at supercuts? - Definitely, yes. Will I try another stylist at Lather? - Probably not. The 3 stars are for the color experience, cute and friendly salon atmosphere and the fact they did not push me to buy their products. Just checking in with the results of the express BKT. I am really pleased with how it turned out and I can't get over how little time I have to spend on subduing my hair and giving up and putting it in a pony. I'm not sure what I will do with the extra time I've gained but I will sure enjoy knowing that I can have smooth hair without much effort. I'll be interested to see how long it lasts in my hair. Overall I am thrilled with the 24 hour BKT and having nice hair when I walk out that doesn't look shellacked. And the cost is about $150 less than most regular BKT. I'll check back in and give an update on how long it lasted. read more
