I went to this salon to see Michael A. solely based on reviews from the website Naturally Curly. I have very curly hair and, like many women with curls, I've had a hell of a time finding a stylist who knows how to cut this type of hair. Unfortunately, my expectations were not met. I gave Michael a picture of me from a previous haircut as an example of what to avoid. I clearly stated that I didn't want my hair to be much shorter, just shaped because it was not layered at all. Upon seeing the picture, he said, "Oh, that's too short. I'll just do a trim and shape it a bit." I thought we were on the same page. Although he didn't cut it as short as the previous stylist had, it was still shorter than I wanted it. He put crunchy gel in my hair, rather than something with a more natural finish, which I told him I preferred. It's a few days later since the cut and I am not happy with it. It's really not as nicely layered as I'd hope and is looking more like pyramid with small pieces sticking out from the back of my head. I'm hoping it will grow enough in time for my October wedding and I'll be going elsewhere to get it styled for that day. Finally, although Michael is personable, he cursed into my ear loudly several times. I have a pottymouth and am far from a prude but seeing as though this was our first meeting, I found the frat boy attitude unprofessional and it took away from the relaxing experience I like to have at a salon. I would never get my hair cut here again and can't recommend it for women with tight curls. I don't think that curly type is his forte despite his claims of being a curly hair expert. PS: The credit card machine wasn't working this day but I think it was a small glitch rather than anything that takes away from service. Front desk and shampooer were very nice and helpful. They also fit me in for a last-minute eyebrow wax, which I appreciated. read more

Since my first haircut three years ago with Michael A, I have not let another person touch my hair. I just went last week and got 10 inches of thick curly hair chopped off into the single most amazing haircut I've ever had. I'm seriously still getting compliments from people who have been looking at it every day for a week, saying they can't get over how great it looks. The total damage was $65 for the cut and style and I've never had anything else down there, so I can't testify to the other services. He spent about an hour and a half carefully crafting the perfect cut from my vague description of what I wanted. He takes the time to mold everything to the shape of your face so every layer falls perfectly to compliment your features, and for some reason it always looks even better the next day when I've styled it myself. It looks great both curly and straight, which is no mean feat, and he is a real master with curly hair. The cuts grow out nicely, too. As for the reviewer who commented about Michael's colourful language, yes, he's quite a character. He says things I certainly wouldn't think of saying to a customer, but I'm not easily offended and he's generally speaking pretty hilarious. If you're interested in the best haircut of your life with a few laughs thrown in, go check out East End. Their star rating on Yelp is seriously disappointing considering all the great experiences I've had there. read more

I find Yelp a bit lacking in the Men's Haircut Review category, so I'm adding my two cents here and wherever else I get my hair cut before settling down with one stylist. I came to East End last Friday for an appointment I made the day before with Terri. Here's what I found. Pros -Technically excellent haircut.. -Professional - I was offered Tea! -Quick!!! - if you need the job done fast, East End can do it. Cons -Pricey - at $50 plus tip, this was more than I expected to pay, particularly since the prices quoted on the website are lower (with the *asterisk saying they could change at any point without notice, so don't get uppity). -Quick!!! - I can't comment on the female experience, or whether this would change with repeat visits, but my appointment went insanely fast. I was washed, clipped and styled inside of 18 minutes (I actually checked my watch to measure this exactly because I couldn't believe I was back on the street as quickly as I was.) I'm not sporting a complicated do at present, but at such prices, I would have hoped for something a little more special feeling - this was like a machine wash. read more

Came to this salon when I was new to the city and searching for a stylist -- about five years ago. The first time I went the cut was decent -- I believe the stylist was named Michael? I came for a second time and Michael was busy, so I got a TERRIBLE stylist who used a razor in my hair (which she really had no business using, considering the total lack of skills). I almost cried. That was the last time I ever went there. I guess if you get a good stylist, this could be a decent place to go. But, the quality control here is NOT consistent. read more

I loved my haircut and color today with Lauren! She knew it was going to be drastic and kept me calm the whole time. I was the first appointment of the day so the coffee and bagels and donuts were very much appreciated. Lauren mixed up plenty of color for my hair which was going multiple shades darker and even gave me a nice blowout at the end which was more than I paid for for sure. This update for East End Salon is long overdue. I have been having my hair cut and colored by Michael Antinori (sp?) for several years now, and have not considered seeking out anyone else since I found him. I was blessed with naturally thin, mouse-colored hair that is a weird combination of very curly and very flat. Michael works his magic to turn it into something that gets me compliments. He has given me good cuts in lengths varying from chin length to below the shoulders with layers that grow out well. This is key since I am horrible about getting it cut regularly. He has done colors ranging from a medium (attractive, non-mouse) brown, to a sandy blond with natural-looking sunny streaks - again in ways that grow out without looking too trashy. The casual, often irreverant atmosphere of the salon might not appeal to everyone, but I love it. On my very first visit, I was recruited to help play a practical joke on Michael and I knew I had found the right place. The prices are not cheap - especially for color, but I figure that since I wear my hair every day, the results are worth the money. On the occasions when I have been less than thrilled with a cut or color after a few days, it has never been a problem for me to pop back in to have things tweaked. read more

I had appointments with Lorenz here at East End salon on a few occasions & he is absolutely amazing!! He takes real pride in his work & you will not walk out the door let down. He definitely knows what he is doing with your hair & the workmanship shows. Initially I went in for a consultation. Something drastic needed done with my hair! We had a chat & I decided I wanted to get extensions. Everything was explained to me very clearly on how we would get my vision to actually be - it would not be just a one step process. I left with a definite plan to put into motion. First I went in for a color correction. My hair is a natural dark brown but I came in with mega brown roots, an auburn base, blonde highlights, blonde chunks, & purple chunks. Yeah, a crazy head of hair to be sure. That needed to be fixed up back to my normal shade before actually installing the extensions. Lorenz took great care to not only get my back to my natural shade, but to not fry my hair during the process & make the end product still look better than just your "average" natural brown look. After everything was said & done & was extremely happy with my hair! It looked amazing & I received a ton of compliments. Shortly thereafter my extension hair was ordered & Lorenz set up a time with me to have the extensions put in. His process is quick & painless. I was surprised at how quickly it was all said & done - I think I was actually in the salon longer for the color correction. No glue or heat fusing is used which I thought was great as I personally am not at all comfortable with the idea of having anything glued or heat bonded to my own hair, no matter how many chichi celebs endorse it. After all the extensions had been put in & Lorenz trimmed it all up a little so it & my natural hair worked together better & I was really impressed with his work. I couldn't just have monochrome color extensions of course, & Lorenz really had an eye for making natural & unnatural color work together. The look is both glam & funky. Very fun! I know I'll be returning to him in the future & am confident no matter what I go in for, I'll leave happy. From my own personal experience I would definitely recommend Lorenz for pretty much anything hair-related, he did amazing job on color, cut & extensions. read more

so i'm terrible about hair maintenance--i'm the twice yearly hair cut kinda gal. east end is located several houses down from the betsy ross house. it's cute, in that shabby chic kind of way. i could totally sit on a couch and read a magazine for hours there. despite my neck hurting from the hair-washing bin, i didn't mind it because there was a giant skylight and i got to watch the clouds go by. rob was my stylist. there's something very cool when someone has green and yellow argyle pattern tattooed on their arm. and so he snipped away... and now i have shiny, voluminous hair. total cost? $45. rock on. (and the best part? he'll trim your bangs for free between cuts!) read more

I went there about two years ago for a hair cut. I'm one of those people who just tends to let it grow out until it is halfway down my back before I get it cut. Yeah, I know, I should grow up and get it cut more often. I don't remember the name of the woman who cut my hair, but with the instructions, "Cut it any way you want as long as I can put it in a ponytail" she did something marvelous to my hair. I got a lot of compliments, including a jaw-drop from an ex-boyfriend, which was totally worth it. It is time for another hair cut, and time to call East End. read more

Received a gift certificate to this salon and decided on a facial. When i booked my appointment I requested a deep cleaning facial. I got a European facial when I arrived. My facial therapist was a little rough with the extractions but all and all it was ok. I probably wouldn't go back to this salon. Read over the menu of services overpriced for what offer. I used to be the kind of girl who got her hair cut once a year and dyed at home with Clairol Brazen Raisin. But then I met Rob at East End and he showed me the light (and the superiority of a professional dye job.) I've been going to him for two years now and will forever (or until he leaves to be a professional fisherman...chat him up about striped bass and he'll love you.) Seriously, the man is a magician with color. I'm pretty sure he can do anything. And he's always up on the latest trends - he talked me into ombre highlights waaayyy before the Hollywood crowd jumped on it. Also, miracle of miracles, have him give you a Brazilian Blowout. I used to have what my family called "cavewoman hair," super frizzy and poofy. Rob gave me a brazilian and I've been waking up with movie star hair for months now. East End Salon is awesome. Donna and Mike are so friendly and have great customer service and my stylist, Rob Woolfort, is amazing. He is so much fun and so talented. He just put a new kind of hair extensions in my hair and it looks so real and was not at all painful. He placed them perfectly throughout my head and the color matches perfectly. I'm hooked and want to get them on a regular basis now! He's also great for trims, color + highlights, keratin, you name it. I'm really picky about hair salons and have been going there regularly now and will never go anywhere else. I'm getting married in the fall and also bringing my 10 bridesmaids and the moms with me as they do great updos and hairstyles for events too. Love love love East End! read more

I have been going to East End Salon since July 1998. I love the atmosphere, staff, and most of all my hair every time I leave. Some may say it's a little pricey, but it's YOUR HAIR! You get what you pay for and I learned that the hard way. I've been going to Michael for years and I just sit in his chair and tell him to do whatever. I have never left unhappy with my hair, rather quite the opposite. Starting from the phone call to make an appointment, you will see how classy East End is. They are warm and inviting when you walk in the door. Personable staff are always offering water, coffee and tea. The hair wash is always invigorating. The best part is the blow out at the end. The only down fall is I can't get any of them to do house calls for a weekly blow-out. Until then, 6 weeks will do. Please go and put your trust in their hands. read more

I moved to Jersey about 3 years ago and never found a great hair stylist. After letting my hair go, I decided to do some internet searching for another salon. Reviews don't lie! Bottom line... I have been going weekly since a birthday in 07/1994. I get a manicure weekly and a pedicure monthly from Sonia. She is awesome. She is my therapist and confidente. Her skills are excellent. I just got my hair cut and highlighted for the fourth or so time here and I never end up dissatisfied. I always go to Rob...and you should too! He's fun and hip and laid back and an excellent stylist. I can call and get an appointment the very next day so if you're in need of some emergency styling don't stress. Sometimes I'll let him do whatever he wants to my hair and afterwards I'll be a little unsure but as soon as I leave the salon I'm getting compliments about how great it looks and then the next day I realize that he (and they) were right. Haircut and highlight for me is about $130. I love this salon and would never go elsewhere. read more

Finally someone who knows how to cut curly hair! Today I had an appointment with Michael A. and I truly think this is the best haircut I have had as long as I can remember. Over the years, I have had cuts from many stylists in many parts of the country and finally I have found someone who listens and knows his stuff! And not only can he cut hair, but he gave me fabulous color and highlights as well. In addition, not only was Michael great, but my experience with the front desk and the assistants was pleasant too. I have been dying and damaging my hair for years it has always been indestructible! Recently I had put a chemical treatment into my hair that made it start falling out. Luckily I have super thick hair , but the hair i had left felt literally like a brillo pad. I could not blow dry or flatiron, it has been in a bun for 2 months. Terrified to touch it!!! I went into East End Salon because my girlfriend had a Keratin treatment and loved it! She highly recommended I go see Rob and have it done immediately. I felt like there was no hope but no way could it get worse. The salon was very charming and had a warm feel to it, everyone was very friendly. I do agree with previous reviews on yelp that the sinks are very uncomfortable. In fact, my neck was sore after wards. I met with Rob. He was great he kept the convo going to help pass the time and the owner was hilarious. Rob had completely surpassed my goal of manageable hair and brought it to a whole new level. It not only feels better that before I ever put any chemicals in it, but softer than when I was a small child. I swear it is a miracle! I will never let anyone but him touch my hair again. Rob has always been my stylist and he does an excellent job.....i have asked him to highlight my hair in several different colors and each time he has been honest about the colors that would go well with my skin tone and those that would stick to my hair.
