She keeps taking in new clients, leaving them sitting for hours, spending their entire day at the salon just to get their hair done. I came to Hair Therapy as someone who has struggled to maintain my 4B/4C hair. I arrived with my hair in its natural state under a bonnet. When it was time for the stylist to wash my hair, I removed my bonnet, and as soon as she saw my dry natural hair, she began showing visible signs of dissatisfaction as if she didn't want to do my hair or had never worked with Black hair before. This was shocking, especially since she is a Black woman herself, working in a Black-owned salon. She looked at my hair in disgust and immediately grabbed some detangler, saying she would work through it dry. I told her, "All you need to do is run some water through it and it will loosen up," but she continued huffing and puffing, clearly annoyed. Her body language made it obvious she didn't want to deal with my hair. When I asked if she was okay, she said she was fine but moments later, without any explanation, she walked out of the room and went to the front of the salon like she was about to pass out or cause a scene just to avoid finishing my hair. The situation felt disgusting and discriminatory. I was left sitting there with my neck tilted back in the wash bowl, starting to cramp, until another stylist came over to finish washing my hair. When I asked what was wrong with the first stylist, she brushed it off like it was nothing. I've never felt so uncomfortable in a place that was supposed to be welcoming to someone like me, as a Haitian-American woman. It was absolutely the worst salon experience I've ever had, and no woman should ever have to go through that level of unprofessionalism. The owner claims her salon is "inclusive" and "different from others," yet even during my negative experience, she bragged about how she could move to newbury street and raise her prices because people "keep complaining" about them when, honestly, for the quality of service provided, the prices are not worth it. It is very difficult for them to breathe wearing a mask all day and could cause them personal health issues. I could see it being difficult to find a spot during really busy times, but overall it's not too bad. -The salon itself is pretty neat and well kept. It's not huge but it is not a shoe box either. -The staff were really friendly and were obviously aware of the seriousness of COVID as they were checking temperatures at the door, providing facemask, and plastic covers for everyone who walked in. A+ for that effort, but the CDC has said the most effective way to prevent the spread is PROPERLY wearing a facemask that covers your nose and mouth and maintaining six feet distance. Obviously, the stylist cannot maintain six feet from their clients, but clients and other stylists should be maintaining six feet from each other, which was for the most part adhered to, except for when you got to the wash area which was this tight space in the corner. That's problem number one, but it's not main problem. The main problem was that at least two of the stylist failed to wear their mask problem. A larger gentleman working across from where I was getting my hair down (about six feet away, perhaps a little less) had his mask on his chin. The virus isn't spread by your chin sir, it's spread by your mouth and nose, what is a chin guard going to help you with? The stylist to my right, had her mask over her mouth but not her nose. The stylist was washing her clients her at the same time my stylist was taking out my relaxer (in that tight corner). I asked her polite to put her mask up, and she informed me "it's too hard to breathe" and explained that the mask isn't effective if it only covers your mouth and not your nose and she told me I could go sit somewhere else and wait for her to be done. I did move and wait for her to be done, but I feel the need to point out that even though I move six feet away, it's still an indoor area with shared air. By her refusing to put her mask up correctly, she was placing me and everyone else in danger. When I went back to the sink, the larger stylist came over with his client with no mask on (chin doesn't count) my stylist asked him THREE TIME to pull his mask on before he finally pulled it up over his mouth but not his nose. She then asked him to put it all the way up and pulled it up for about a minute before complaining it was too hot and pulling it back down. 95% percent of the time this man failed to wear a mask over his mouth or nose and at no point did he actually wear it over both. The other stylist kept her mask over her mouth (for the most part) but refused to wear it over her nose, even when asked by myself and my stylist. It was a hot day, there is no denying that, but I wore my mask as did all the other clients. If you can't tolerate a mask, then you can't work with the public, period. It is not up for debate, there is a pandemic going on and people's lives are more important than your comfort. ~Stylist~ I want end by saying that my stylist, Annetta--"Girlfriend Hooked me up", was amazing. My hair is shinny and healthy and I have ZERO complaints about how she did my hair. This negative review is about the facility. I have left a five star review on her style page because she is great and has no control over what the owners of the salon allowed the other stylist to do.

I've spent the past several years bouncing around from different stylists trying to someone who was both affordable, professional, and talented. After one particularly horrific cut, I came by to see Sherine at Maria's. She had put extensions in my hair once before, and I figured I needed some serious extensions assistance to get over this recent chop job. I have typical 'white girl' hair: fine, stringy, and super silky soft. This means it styles nicely but is super difficult to braid for sew-in extensions. No problem for Sherine. She is amazing. She works with my hair type and the extensions always look amazing. Although extensions are a big price commitment (I'm definitely stretching my budget here), Sherine is well worth the investment. I'm so happy with the way my hair looks, and will definitely be back for maintenance. Although the salon does not seem to have a huge white girl client-base, and stylists are often most comfortable working with hair they're accustomed to, Sherine does an AMAZING job. If you have a client walk in, you stop the conversation with the client who has already had her service (also the client should know better but some people will remain selfish and unaware their whole lives), and you at least greet and ask what the client who just walked in is there for. I sat down and waited 30 minutes before the other stylist noticed me, and asked what I was in for. Simply unprofessional and also really rude, just as a human being, especially from the owner. I was really disappointed in this behavior and then my service felt really rushed. I know sometimes you have to wait at salons bc sometimes a service goes over, but the least you can do is greet your clients as they walk through the door and check them in (or hire a dang receptionist).
