I immediately understood my mistake when Julia informed me. However, instead of simply correcting me, she made the situation feel unnecessarily public and embarrassing. In front of other customers, she emphasized that it was not a tester and that the product now had to be removed. After I apologized and explained that I genuinely didn't know, she continued bringing it up while walking me to the body oil section. The interaction became even more uncomfortable at checkout. I mentioned that another employee, whom I believe was named Braylen, had helped me locate the perfume I originally came in for and had already brought it to the register. Julia then abruptly grabbed the bottle of oil I had mistakenly opened and placed it behind her in a manner that made me feel as though I was being treated like a potential thief rather than a paying customer. To top it off, after the entire interaction, she asked if I wanted to sign up for Ulta's rewards program. That felt incredibly tone-deaf considering how unwelcome and judged I had already been made to feel. Overall, the experience felt condescending and, at times, dismissive in a way that left me feeling uncomfortable and singled out. It gave me the impression of bias, which was disappointing for my first visit. First impressions matter, and unfortunately this did not make me feel respected or valued as a customer.
