I work just around the corner and was in desperate need of a haircut, so I looked at my options and found salon charisma. I don't think I've ever had a better haircut in my life. Hakan did such an amazing job, and he was incredibly efficient! I was in and out in under an hour, and I have very thick hair that takes a while to dry. I've been following Amalia around town, and she is here! I have straight hair, thin hair itself but lots of it. She consistently leaves me with a great cut and does an awesome blow dry - I almost fall asleep in the chair I'm so zenned out. I love having short hair and have often struggled finding a cut that doesn't age me more than I need to be. The layers Amalia gives are so great, they don't make me look like my mother- and provides some movement to an otherwise normal bob. I cannot recommend Hakan enough! I have a lot of hair, and finding someone who can handle it properly has always been a challenge--until I found him. Hakan did highlights and a keratin treatment on my hair, and the results were absolutely fantastic. Not only is he incredibly skilled, but he's also amazingly fast. What would have taken 4 to 6 hours at another salon, Hakan completed in just a couple of hours. His prices are incredibly reasonable, especially considering the amount of work involved with my hair. Anywhere else, it would have cost me at least three times more for the same services. I discovered Salon Charisma through class pass and although I no longer have a membership, Salon Charisma is my go-to hair salon. I have had many great hair stylists in the past, but Hakan at Salon Charisma is by far the best hair stylist I've ever had. I have a lot of hair - and it's thick too - and Hakan knows exactly how to style it to perfection (see my long, thick, beautifully blow dried hair on left). He is able to blow dry my hair in 30 minutes when most other hair stylists take at least an hour. His hair cuts are phenomenal as well. I will never go to any other hair stylist in Dc and i always miss him when I have to go to a new hair stylist while traveling. He is truly a hair God. Location is great and I'm sorry to write this but I don't recommend getting highlights there by Hakahn. When you try to tell him that you didn't care for something he did to your hair he immediately takes it as an insult, making it very difficult to communicate about what look you are going for with him. When you are paying good money for a service that you have to live with the results for the next 2 months you should be able to communicate with your stylist. I left there multiple times feeling like I didn't really get what I was asking for and nervous to bring it up with him because I knew I'd get push back and attitude. The last time I went I was trying to communicate and got the same argumentative attitude so I told him I didn't want to go through with the appointment. He got really angry and told me "never come back to my salon" - believe me I won't. read more

There was a photo of a black woman amongst their other photos on their website so I thought it would be ok for my wash, wrap/blow dry service. Unfortunately it wasn't a black salon, although there was another stylist who did black hair, it was explained, but she wasn't working the day I went. I've been going to Fathia at Salon Charisma for years (we just did the math and I think it's 8 years, since I moved to DC and was introduced to her). I don't trust just anyone with my hair. Fathia, my savior with shears, can get my hair washed, cut, blown & styled 45 min flat on a good day...under an hour always (keeping in mind I'm a white woman with moderately thick hair). I come in every 3-4 months for a trim. I've sent friends, acquaintances, exes, and randoms her way--all of whom come back raving. Amazing work, and if I ever move I told her I'll be booking a train back to DC for our regular appts. Some things in life are worth any price and high tips, and this is one of those things! read more

I came nervous about a trying a new stylist and cutting my hair(I have bad experiences with stylists that didn't listen to desired length in the past). I ventured to Salon Charisma for a Brazilian Wax. The young lady who waxed me was not only nice, but also informative on how to properly care for your special region post-wax. The price was great too! The only thing I would say is that I wished she put her hand in the spot after waxing to alleviate some of the initial sting. After my wax, I got my hair re-curled. I found my new salon here in DuPont! I've been bouncing around DC for the last couple of years and haven't found the perfect combination of getting exactly what I want and affordability. I can only review my bikini wax experience here. Sub-par. My biggest beef is that when I told the woman I wanted a Brazilian wax (clearly listed price & all on their website) she gave me a regular wax. So when I explained what I was looking for she tried to do that, but wasn't doing a very good job in certain areas. To her credit (+1 star), she was nice and tried to do what I told her. I came here with my roommate on a Saturday afternoon to see Tho after making a reservation the day prior. She scheduled our appointments only half an hour apart, which seemed short considering washing/ blow-drying but we went with it. I went first and I can't say I had a great time. I asked for my hair to be cut into long layers, so she started immediately without wetting it. I wanted it washed, but she insisted that she would cut first and wash later. I've never had anyone cut when dry before, and then she suddenly sent me to get my hair washed halfway through the cut. I soon realized why she did that -- because she was trying to fit in two haircuts in the same time slot, so a male customer was getting his hair washed while mine was being cut, and she fit in his haircut while my hair was washed. It bothered me a lot since I expected more attention considering how short my appointment was. Afterwards, she said she would blow dry my hair and then trim some more after it was blown out. The entire time, she asked lots of questions regarding what I wanted, which is nice except long layers is an easy cut so I didn't think my request warranted such confusion. And she also kept asking if I wanted it flat ironed. I initially said no since I prefer to minimize heat damage, but I gave in after asked multiple times. Our friend who recommended the place had visited only a couple weeks prior and told us how much she paid for a cut. However, when it was time to pay, my roomie and I were quoted us $5 higher than what we heard. NBD... but we asked why and she said it's because we have thick hair and because we got it styled. NBD again... except long layers aren't hard to cut, and she spent a total of 10 minutes snipping, and she didn't say that styling would cost extra, and she said I needed to get it blow dried in order to finish the cut, and she insisted I get it flat ironed when I didn't really want it. Yea. So how does my hair look? Okay. I don't love it but I don't hate it, thus the three stars. I think the bangs are little shorter than I would prefer, but they're not hideous so I'll live with it. My roommate doesn't like hers either (she thinks her layers make her perm look messy) but we'll both live with it. read more

Salon Charisma is a lovely second-story space with big windows that overlook south Dupont Circle, and the atmosphere is relaxed, with quiet music in the background. It's a quite pleasant place to spend an hour or four (I have high-maintenance hair ;)). But the five star review is mostly for David, by far the BEST stylist I've ever had, in four states and the District! I've been a client for years and have followed him wherever he goes, because he's worth it. When I initially saw him, it was to save my hair from a terrible butchering at an unnamed DC salon, and he did that and more. He's equally fantastic with cuts and color. I'm a bit type A, but I don't hesitate for a second to completely turn my hair over to David to work his magic and do what he thinks is best. And I get TONS of compliments - not just the day after, but weeks after too. On top of that, he's the sweetest guy you'll ever meet - he truly wants his clients to be happy and gorgeous. read more

I'll disclaim upfront that haircuts are very subjective, but I've waited nearly two weeks to grow into my haircut and my opinion has not improved. I read the reviews on Yelp and specifically sought out Thomas Shelton for a haircut and received the second worst haircut I've had in DC. My hair is not particularly difficult to cut (a student at another salon did an amazing job last year, and I also frequently cut my own hair between professional cuts). The haircut I requested was lightly texturized/blended layers. The haircut I got was extremely thinned out on the bottom with a pronounced "shelf" at my ears (very thin out at the bottom and about 3-4 times thicker at my ears). Even more disappointing, Mr. Shelton styled my hair in a Carol Brady-esque way (mushroom/bowl in the front but super flipped out in the back) and was content to let me walk out of the salon looking like an absolute fool. I asked him to fix the style, which he only partially did, and when I met a friend for dinner immediately after, her response was, "It's not terrrrrible, it's just not really... you..." Other disappointments were that the salon double booked appointments, but made it up with a complimentary conditioning treatment. However, it still took over an hour and a half for me to get in and out. I will definitely never return here. read more

When I made my reservation I said that all I wanted was a haircut- no wash or styling- an option that they advertise on their website. Yet when I got there, I really had to argue with them to get the less expensive option. So while I can't speak to any of the other stylists, I know she can do a very good men's haircut on difficult hair, and that she's a very nice, warm person. Strangely enough, I also got the first wax of my life there, in preparation for getting a large tattoo on my upper back. The lady who did the waxing was extremely kind and made me feel comfortable, and although yeah, it hurt, it's nowhere *near* Steve Carell's bit, or how bad some of the ladies here seem to feel about their waxing experiences. Lastly, I'll just say that while it's still near Dupont Circle, the place is actually chill and relaxed. No 24/7 techo music or people yelling at the top of their lungs. My new favorite stylist Mark Waller recently move to Relic at salon Charisma. After unsuccessfully trying many trendy places in DC I found Mark after my girlfriend came home raving about her new stylist and cut. She said he listened to what she was looking for in a fresh new style and then explained to her what tweaks to her vision he would make to ensure it looked the best with her hair. I had literally the same experience with him. I told him the style I had wanted for a while now and how I had tried growing it and getting it cut by different stylists but it never looked great. I have extremely straight thick hair with several cowlicks. Other stylist (some talented some not) didn't have the heart to tell me that my hair peculiarities prevented my hair from working with my ideal cut so they would cut it and style it and 5 minutes after leaving it would stick up or lay incorrectly and I was left frustrated. First cut with Mark he says okay I see what your going for. Let's trim it here, leave the length here, dry it with product in and it should be "your version" of the style you're after. He was right. He cut and styled my hair in the manner I was after and it looked great because he tailored the cut to my hair. First time I left a haircut in a while thinking it looked good and was exactly what I wanted so when he moved to Relic, still located in Dupont, I was happy to follow. Vincent was recommended to me by the only person I know with a ridiculously straight but thick hair as me and she definitely got it right. Vincent works for himself but is at Charisma a few days a week. He booked me with an appointment two days after I called and was super helpful working with my schedule. The receptionist was OK, not great, but polite and attempted to be accommodating. Vincent himself is AMAZING. This is the first haircut since I moved to D.C. that I liked the next day when I washed and blew it out myself. My mother was a stylist for 20 years and I grew up in a salon so I'm pretty picky. Vincent is the perfect mix of great stylist, good conversationalist and honestly nice guy. He really listened to what I wanted and gave me something that was easy but sexy. If 14 year old hellion children are commenting that your hair looks great at 8:30 am when they first get to school, you know it's cute! I have long, thick, wavy/curly frizzy hair, and i'm extremely particular about who I will let cut and style my hair, for fear of walking out with either a botched cut or an unmanageable and high-maintenance look. Thankfully, I found Freddy R.! Not only did he allow me to explain my concerns (thick & frizzy hair), he also went into detail explaining how he would cut layers into my really long hair and the effect these would create to the overall look.
