One bad thing about moving from SF to DC for work was having to give up my elderly barber of decades who cut my hair for cheap out of his own apartment. What a really fun place and seems to be a local institution. I counted nine chairs in a space that feels like less the 500 square feet. The pictures of past & current patrons is like a who's who Of national politics. I wanted to take a picture but it was so packed I felt awkward. What really surprised me was I signed in at 5th in line on a Saturday morning but everyone in front of me was waiting for a specific stylist so I was seen in under 5-10 minutes. While many foreign languages seemed to be the norm everyone was super friendly. I already know I will be back in a few months and have every intention of returning. I found out about this place from Next Door, looking for a more reasonably priced place for a simple woman's haircut. It is $35 for a woman's cut, cash or check only, no credit cards! I'm fine with that. Keeping down the credit card fee is probably partly how the haircut costs less! The owner is a friendly, sweet Italian guy who seems to have lots of interesting stories! It's crowded and loud but everyone was wearing masks. Maria cut my hair and it came out well. I will definitely be returning since I was sick of paying $70 for a basic haircut at other places and this did the job!!!! Notes: no hair wash, but she did blow dry/style it, included in the price. I just happened by the salon in a busy day, was able to walk in, and Elizabeth cut my hair with intuition that I wish I had with most of my stylists. My haircutter from the moment I walked in was distracted, taking phone calls, talking to other staff, writing things down, etc. She had CBD aftershave nearby, further arousing my suspicions. She skipped the left side of my head for a while because she was talking to a coworker. Then she proceeded to sheer off about half of my hair with the devolumizing scissors. By the time I asked her to stop -- and I should've asked far sooner -- she said, "But you have a lot of volume." I said I liked my volume. She literally said, "But I like these scissors." She apologized at the end, "Sorry I cut too much of your hair," and offered no discount. Simply the worst haircut I've ever had in my 41 years on this planet. read more

Best place for a fade/crew cut in DC. Mario gave me the best haircut I've ever had after living 10 years in NYC and SF. I asked for a lower fade, starting low with a 1, NOT high and tight, and to leave the top alone. He calls it "short and good looking." I've also heard good things about Luis, and Esmi gave me a great cut a few months back also. This place is great because it welcomes walk ins, $25 for a cut and wash and it opens at 8am so it's great to not mess up your day off if you go in early. I took my 14 y.o. In for a "men's haircut". They listened to him, made suggestions but let him take the lead, and in spite of the busy time of day, every customer was treated well and attended to quickly. Next time, I'll make an appt and avoid lunch hour & uber instead of looking & paying for parking but it was like traveling back in time. Diego was very charming & funny. Great value. Pros -friendly staff, when/If they talk to you -$20 mens cut, cash only Cons - no way of knowing who is next -they don't answer the phone. I tried calling and watched their phone ring 7 different times - you get what you pay for... My cut was 3x shorter than I asked. Once I noticed, it was too late. The ears and neck were not the best. - avoid the older blond woman on the left- talking to her is like pulling teeth. She doesn't show you the back of your head, ears, etc. and would rather chit chat and look outside than focus in your hair. I left with all of my clipping on my clothes and back! Diego's is open again. They opened last week and have social distancing measures in place. I have been going to Diego's since 2012 and usually went there on Saturdays (where no appointment was necessary). But given the COVID situation, I called on Friday for a Saturday afternoon appointment and they mentioned that I should wear a mask to my appointment. I called again on Saturday morning and they said that they could accommodate me earlier since there were not a lot of customers. I arrived at Diego's and my usual stylist greeted me and showed me the chair immediately. Diego and his staff were wearing masks. There were only 4 customers and we were seated at least one seat apart from each other. My stylist told me that she was only going to the shop 3x a week (staff was on a rotation basis so that the shop is not full at all, but that also means less work and tips for her). Since I was wearing a mask, she would sometimes move the strings down to be able to cut around my ears. I only wish that she had worn gloves. When it came to shaving my side burns, I had to remove the strings of my mask and keep my mask in place using my hands as the stylist shaved the sides. I opted not to have my hair washed. I made it a point not to touch my face at all (even is the small hairs got into my eyes and nose, which was really itchy) and sanitized my hands before and after the appointment. I brought my own hand sanitizer, but I think I saw that they hand sanitizers at the shop. I washed my hands and hair when I got home. I asked if they had changed their rates, and they have not (it's still $25 for a cut). I gave her a very generous tip at the end since it was last March when I was there. I understand the risks, but at the same time I also wanted to support local businesses, which have been significantly impacted by the COVID situation. Plus, I really did need a haircut. read more

Recently my hair cutter died, so today I tried a new salon and WOW did I hit the jackpot!! Diego's on Q Street is so much fun I'd pay to just SIT in there! At 8am Diego himself opened the doors and most customers greeted him like he was their best friend! A sweet woman named Cecilia took my bag & walking stick, sat me down, and brought me coffee! She gave me a great haircut for just $25 while I studied the countless photos of famous customers on the walls! Nancy Pelosi!!! Bill Clinton! George Bush! They had cheerful Latin music, great coffee, charming pros serving a hyper-appreciative clientele, and one regular customer even brought in croissants for everybody in the shop!! Great haircuts at a reasonable price. I had tried many haircut (fancy, non fancy, etc.) places in DC since moving here and Diego's is the best! If you come on a weekday make sure to make an appointment. They are also open on Saturdays but first come first serve. I normally try to come on Saturday mornings and they are very friendly. They also offer coffee / espresso to customers if you are there in the AM. They treat you like family and you get a great cut at a great price. read more

I'm a man with long hair so I know my way around a barber shop and this place was great. Reasonable price as well. $25. Would have paid $50. This is my new go to place in D.C. Saw Diego's being mentioned as one of the oldest establishment in DC catering to ambassadors, politicians and all the big wigs, and couldn't resist to try myself. I came in here a week ago while on vacation in DC. I was looking to get my beard trimmed and my head shaved. I was hoping for something a little more affordable as other places nearby charged around $40-50 for the service (though in those cases they did straight razor shaves.) I came in here and the place was packed, but I was directed to an empty chair being serviced by a woman whose name I honestly don't recall. The head shave was fine though it was an electric razor shave. The beard trim was also fine, very basic but it was done well. The two stars are for three reasons. First, she didn't have a proper shaving brush to brush away hair from my neck, face and ears. She kept using her hairdryer and blowing it directly into my ears. Second, whatever aftershave she used made me break out on the back of my neck under my hairline. Third, the cost came out to $40. Everything I found via google said it would be $25. I realize she did my beard AND head, but usually since a head shave is a very quick buzz process, it is included in a beard trim or is just maybe a $5 additional charge. From President Bush to President Obama and countless Members of Congress in between, everyone raves about shop owner Diego. His striking smile and inviting Italian-isms make the shop's vibe. Diego and his HIGHLY competent staff form one of the best peluquerías in DC. I have very high maintenance hair and have paid in excess of $200 for "the highest quality". Not even close to Diego's. You can bet that if you know your cut, they will do it right. Maybe even better than you ever imagined -- isn't that fun? ‍ I was pleasantly surprised with the quality at my first visit and consistency impressed six months on. Simply needed an quick, easy military buzz haircut. Despite asking for quick cut, this one required 2 washes before, extra razors, countless extra touches that are nice but not what customer wanted. I literally stepped up and started walking away while she wanted to do more fine touches. Then having to sprint to a bank because cash only added more excess time. Result: late to morning meetings because of longest haircut have had in years, despite what customer requested. Maybe this place is fine for men's cuts since 90% of their customers seemed to be men when I went, but if you are a woman I do not recommend coming here. I asked for a trim and the woman cut at LEAST 4 inches off and even more in the front. I asked for front angling and instead it looks as though I have two different hair lengths. Basically no shaping, just a weird straight cut across my front pieces of hair. Everyone there, from Diego himself to the newer barbers, is a joy to be around, remembering even their occasional customers. And the space in all its light-filled splendor (go in the morning if you can) is glorious, most of all when he enlivens the usual industrious quiet with a few minutes of opera or festive Italian jazz. Walk-ins may wait ten-fifteen minutes, but the ambient cheeriness will make it feel like five. The haircuts? Good, especially for the $20 you pay. I went to B&C nearby before switching and think Diego's is slightly better on results alone. Diego's is the BEST and has prompted me to write my first yelp review. Our 10 month old son was more than ready for his first haircut. We have heard many great recommendations about Diego's and decided to let our son be the guinea pig for our family. Great parents we are! We made an appointment with Iole, but Diego insisted on cutting my son's hair. But she still assisted. Diego did the cutting while Iole helped to get my son looking in the proper direction for optimal cutting. Diego was quick, as a 10mo old will only sit still for so long. But he was also very patient and gentile in the process. My wife and I are very pleased with our experience and we will be back for our son's 2nd haircut. I think it's time for me to ditch the overpriced cuts and head to Diego for myself. read more
