Now, my appointment took quite some time but I honestly didn't mind-- I had all night and my color and cut sincerely needed TLC! After a color correction, base color, highlights, and cut, my hair looked better than when I was a youngin with thick (un-gray) naturally highlighted hair. We found the perfect un-brassy color that truly worked with my skin tone and a trim that thickened my fine hair. We've worked out an appointment schedule to maintain my hair color and cut. While going through yet another quarter life crisis, I made the mistake of going to other colorists to bleach and color my hair. I ran the whole gamut - cotton candy pink, lavender, yellow blonde, and platinum blonde. My hair was fried - the last colorist who'd done my platinum had left my head in a state that had my hair literally crunching off in my sleep. I wanted to go back to sane, natural, healthy hair. I figured I needed to go to an expert to chop most of the damage off, get my remaining hair back to my natural color, and then help me keep it healthy until it grew out again. I went to Diane. Diane took one look at my hair, lightly chided me for leaving her, and then got to work. She filled in my platinum hair with hours of different browns and caramels to make sure my hair would have a good color base and not fade to a greenish tint (common when bad colorists dye platinum hair back to dark in a "quick fix" sort of way ). She put me through multiple conditioning treatments and glosses to get my hair back on track towards non-crunchiness. She even threw in a bunch of treatments for free ("come in every week!") when she realized I was hesitant about spending the money to give my hair the love and care it needed for me to fully return to my head of thick healthy hair. My hair has made such a comeback. It'd be a lie to say it's like my virgin hair pre-quarter life crisis, but it is well on its way there. My hair no longer feels like bleached strands of hay, there is much less breakage, my color blends seamlessly into my natural dark roots, and my hair looks dramatically shinier and fuller and healthier. Her years in the industry reflect as she is honest in her consultations and up to date with her styling. I had a little extra $ at the time, so I decided to try the smoothing treatment she does. Wow! I have always had frizzy hair and did not want to "straighten" it to get it smooth, so I've always ended up using a lot of product to get it close to smooth, but it's always a crap shoot as to how it turns out. The smoothing treatment lasts for FOUR months! I just went back the other day to get a new smoothing treatment and cut, color and highlights and it's all even better than last time! Now, when I do my hair, instead of taking a half-hour to do it, with mixed results, it takes HALF the time and looks like I was just at the salon when I do it at home! Absolutely the worst hair experience of my life. I'm usually the person that is okay with anything on my hair, I know it grows back and I like seeing a stylists character/interpretation in the results... but what Diane did to my hair and the way she treated me after when I brought up my dissatisfaction to her was unbelievable. I've posted pics so you can see for yourself 1. Charged me a price that was different than what she had posted in her salon. ($350 for full balayage, then 20% off for Yelp, $280 total) 2. The whole experience took 6+ hours. 3. Her "balayage" meant putting five colors onto my hair in huge chunks at a time, leaving a hard coloration line in my hair. 4. Mixing colors that take different times to process, telling me that some are done in 10, some are done in 25, then washing the back third of my hair out after 15 or so minutes and leaving the remainder foiled up under the dryer for 36 mins. 5. When I texted her telling her about my dissatisfaction and inquiring about a partial refund, she texted me "u aren't a colorist", "u have never been to a stylist at my level", "for u to even question my skill and how I do things is beyond me!" For the full story, read below: I went in on a Sunday to get a balayage and a cut by Diane. I show her a picture from Pinterest (to be clear, I am COMPLETELY aware that my hair will never look exactly the same as a Pinterest picture) and asked her for a brown to blonde balayage in the same ballpark as the picture. She shows me the difference between a partial and a full balayage, and reminds me about the 20% off from Yelp , but says that the prices on the sign (right in front of me) are actually incorrect and not updated. She asks if I've gone on her website and that the real prices are posted there, but she's not sure if the woman doing her website is done with the yet so it might not be up. She then gave me prices off the top of her head without showing me anything official, but I let it go because 20% off and at the time I had no reason to fight it. She goes through the process of putting dyes and conditioners on my head and putting me under the dryer for intervals, 54 minutes at one point, which according to her infrared dryer chart was almost two hours of heat onto my hair, drying my hair with just her fingers in an upward direction that made my hair all frizzy and pieces were breaking off all over... then she finally (5 hours in) puts the actual balayage colors on... wait, what? What has been happening this entire time, then? She puts them on and I can clearly see she's not doing anything like any balayage I've ever gotten. She is putting a lot of product on, up to my scalp on the under half of my scalp, and doing no blending at the top... just painting it on in a horizontal line... even wet I can see the squared off corners of the brush marks... Then she tells me that some of the colors she put on will be done in 10 while the rest are done in 25. So after 15 mins she washes out the back third of my hair and leaves the rest to sit under the dryer for 36. I left around 1215am. After sweating under the dryer all night and seeing pieces of my damaged hair fall out, I wanted to get out and never come back. The following morning I took pictures of my hair (unwashed) and cried. I put my hair up all week and made an appointment with someone in my hometown who does my sisters hair. She fixed it and even posted about it on her social media because it was so bad. I texted Diane the following message: "Hi Diane, It's Jillian, from Sunday night. I want to say thank you for taking the time out of your day/night to do my hair and go through the many processes. I thought it looked okay when I left, but when I got home I was looking more at the blending and I'm really unhappy with it and the overall coloring and how I can clearly see the brush strokes on certain parts of my head. I wanted to get a balayage because it is a low maintenance option that gives a natural look of lightening, but I really feel like my hair goes from brown to blonde in a pretty visible line around my crown. I thought I'd give it a couple of days to see if I could wear it but I have come to the conclusion I can't. I only get my hair done every six months because that's what I can afford, and at this point I think I need to get my hair redone, but I can't afford to spend another $300. I know it's not common practice, but is there any way I can get a partial refund? I know your time and product is valuable so I would never expect a full refund, but I thought I'd ask if partial refund. I enjoyed conversing with you, and I see that you have good reviews on Yelp. I just don't think our hair visions coincided this time. Please let me know what options are available to me at this point. It's been almost a year since I first met Diane, and now there is no one else I'd let touch my hair. In just the past year, Diane has taken me from my natural black hair, to mocha brown, to beige blonde, to ash blonde and back to a medium brown/blonde balayage - all while maintaining the integrity of my hair. If you're familiar with Asian hair, you'll know how difficult it is to lift to blonde without brassiness and/or severely damaging the hair, so this speaks volumes to Diane's skill. Ms D is not a very kind lady. I arrived at 2:05 with an appointmentat 2:00 because i wasn't able to find her shop which clearly read, "diet consultant" on the sign. Then when i got there, she said she needed to use the restroom and then left for about 20minutes. I had a groupon that included a cut, deep conditioning, and partial highlights but she WILL charge you $40 extra for the highlights and then say that she's not able to work with my hair unless i get the deep deep conditioning, another $10 extra. She told me that's how groupons work, you pay for part of it then you HAVE to pay extra. I don't think so, especially if it didnt say on the fine print. She also left me for a good 45mins while she left the infared machine on. It had turned off 15mins in but she didn't return to check on it, so i sat there like a fool with foil in my hair unable to move. She also made me stand up for my whole haircut, then asked, you've never done it this way before? No...I've never stood for half an hour to get my hair cut. She did not even listen to what i wanted and my hair was no way as short as what i wanted. She said that she's afraid to cut it that short because I'm not sure of what i wanted. I told you shorter and you won't do it? My mom had to help me cut it some more when i got home. and for the 5 hours i had to spend with this lady she kept insulting my hair and that i needed to buy her products to fix it. read more

NO STARS would be my true and accurate rating of this salon. I was genuinely excited to have Diane do my hair and try a new hair stylist. If you just want a trim she is great. Forget any color by her. I won't insult the salon by posting pics of my hair that was supposed to be strawberry blonde with blonde highlights. It turned out NEON dark dark copper. Diane squeezed a haircut in between my color in and washing it out. (WHAT, WHAT...yep insulted and no class - no attention to task at hand) Then proceeded to highlight it all over to make it blonde, then to clean up the botch job she put a demi over the whole hair (which is not permanent. 10:00 - 3:30 as my fiance waited. When does good hair color take that much time, NEVER! Not to mention my scalp being burned by her curling iron in trying to make it look presentable. I wanted to cry. It has taken me over 45 days of clarifying shampoo and silver hair shampoo to get the copper lightened up enough. I get married July 27th and short of cutting my entire hair off had to deal with this. I don't question that she has done hair over and over. I just don't think she has the focus to be a colorist with good results. If you think I'm not being honest, think about this. What good salon that you have EVER been to that charges you 1/2 of your next appointment? My answer would be ones that think you will never come back!!!! I'm updating my review because I just realized something on the Groupon I used. The Groupon said includes deep conditioning and all I remembered was Diane shampooing my hair and charging me an extra $10 for some boost cream she added which didn't do much really. It's funny, while reading a post that she said she's had a few years in the hair styling business and then claims she's had forty years, she told me she's had twenty three. I began going to Diane since about last Spring, starting in April of 2014. Diane is wonderful, she's funny, warm, real and a genuinely kind person. I met her through a Groupon my partner had gotten (she does both of our hair), and have since become a repeat customer. I literally just today went to her for the third time, and she just does such a nice job with my hair. She's an extremely talented and experienced colorist, (my color is rich and textured, not brassy and cheap looking), and she knows EXACTLY how to bring out the right highlights and tones to compliment your skin and the shape of your face, she knows what looks good, and she will be honest and up front with you and tell you her opinion. In my experience, it is good to have this kind of communication with your hairstylist, because otherwise you won't get what you want. And Diane is the type of stylist who does listen and take on board what you say, because she values her clientele. She's no stranger to human nature, and how protective people are of their coiffures. With that in mind, I know that with each appointment I make with Diane, that I will be able to communicate what it is I like and want from her for my hair. I read in at least one of the other reviews stating that she demands a deposit for the next appointment because she's afraid her clients won't return. She asks if you want to put a deposit down for the next appointment, because she actually cares about saving her repeat clients money. I remember I balked at it a little the first time she asked me that, but then it just made sense after I thought it out. Today I did spend a little extra $$$ at her Salon because I bought some additional products. She was very sweet about that too: she charged me for two products and threw a third item in for free. I will definitely continue to go to her, I like her, she's fun, she's hospitable and makes you feel welcomed. All these things I've mentioned are extremely important. She's an excellent stylist and makes you feel like you haven't just wasted your $$$$ when she finishes the job. She's competent, flexible (she still retained me as a client after I missed an appointment), accommodating and understanding and just very sweet. I've never had a stylist ask me if I wanted a Mimosa, or tea, or candy or something to nibble on when I got to their salon. Diane is just an all around class act. Yes her answering service might suck at times, but don't leave a review of the quality hair service based on the girl/guy answering the phone. I just wanted a simple long bob.. OMG, she's the worst hairdresser I know. I am always happy with my haircuts no matter who's doing it, because I ask for very simple things. But here, my hair is a disaster. TLDR: Diane does a good job with your color for an excellent price in SF although her salon is in a tiny windowless room, and you will be there for a long time. I was there from 6-11 pm and got an appointment luckily on the same day. She takes care of you and cares about your hair, and putting in the time for sure, and even blew out my hair at the end even though it was so late. She got the brassy orange out of my hair and did a great job although I was sort of dying after a few hours bc it gets hot in a small room. Also thought my layers in the front were a little too blunt and chunky. Her manner can be a little bit rough around the edges at times by telling me that I need to be more educated about how hair color works but she is a nice lady for sure. Diane is awesome! I got a cut and color done by her and she did a really great job on both. She listened and discussed what I wanted, helping me come to a solid decision. Most stylists don't give me much feedback and it's great to have an expert give their opinion for a change. She did a great job with the cut giving me more layers than most stylists are comfortable with but without taking too much off. When it came to color, I was hesitant as I hadn't had any chemicals in my hair for years and had never really loved the color of my highlights in the past. I have asian hair and most colors come out too orange. Diane chose an amazing, very natural looking brown only slightly lighter than my current color and gave me a beautiful balayage. Even as it has lightened in the sun, the color remains complementary to that of my skin. I will definitely continue to work with Diane in the future. I went there because I got a groupon for her salon. It was in a building on Market but you have to ring the doorbell to get in. Unless she changed it after I came in last time, there isn't a listing for Salon D, but it's in her name, Diane. That confused me a little bit. Once you get in, you don't have to go far to find the salon because it is right by the elevators. The space is very small, it seems like she operates another business out of the same space. Diane did a really great job on my hair. I just wanted a trim; which she did; and she didn't try to talk me into doing something that I didn't want. The deep conditioning was the icing on the cake. It made my hair look a million dollars. I went in around the holidays and I guess business was down for her. Most of the conversation was her discussing about how slow business was. I understand being at a salon it is all about the small talk. When I visited her, I just came off a long day at work and was so tired to keep up a conversation but tried my best. She wanted to know my profession and wanted to know how often I get my hair done. I am a that person that has to go every 4-6 weeks give or take to get a hair cut... cause then I get easily annoyed. Once I told her that, it seemed like she was pushing me hard for products, made suggestions to dye my hair (I mentioned to her that I was thinking about changing up my hair color) and trying hard to get me to come back. That part kinda made me feel a little awkward. All in all she does a great job. She listens to you and listens to your hair. She takes the extra time needed to get the job done correctly in the first place. She does tell you the truth on what needs to be done if you want something else done and not make you go through extra stuff or spend money that you don't need to. Great stylists mean busy schedules! But it's well worth it. Diane called me back and was able to squeeze me in a couple weeks later. Super grateful for this! An amazing cut and keratin treatment left my hair feeling like pure silk. So silky I have to tell myself to stop touching my hair so it doesn't get dirty. I've also already booked my next appointment bc I want to be sure I am able to see her again. Diane is a great lady and works so hard to make her clients happy. She's a real person, always gives her honest opinion on styles/colors, and genuinely wants her clients to feel good about how they look. Dianne became my permanent hair stylist since my first visit, which was about 3 years ago. First, she will spend as much time as needed, never in a rush. The past few salons I tried did not give me the color I was wanting/asking for and my color was becoming more golden tones, which was very frustrating. I went to Diane after reading what a great colorist she is, how she listens to her clients, and how she wants them to look their best. This is all true and I was not disappointed! She was able to color my hair exactly how I wanted....actually the color was better than I was imagining. She gave me beautiful highlights, along with lowlights that were the color I was used to and not gold/orange tones that I was getting at other salons. The color she does looks more expensive than previous salons, which charged me just as much. As mentioned in previous reviews, Diane does haircuts wet or dry, which is great because I personally prefer my haircuts when my hair is dry. The deep conditioning treatment and infrared dryer was awesome and made my hair feel wonderful. I have been to a lot of different stylists and Diane is one of the most skilled I have encountered. Diane was very easy to talk to and I appreciate that she took the time to listen to my concerns and understood immediately what I wanted and what would look best for me. She also took the time to correct the mistakes the previous salons had made and I finally feel like my hair is back to the way I want it. I couldn't stop looking in the mirror as she was drying my hair because it looked so great! She also gave me tips on styling, which was really fun. To be honest, I've never been as loyal to a single hair dresser as I have been to Diane, probably because I haven't had one as good as her. Every time I leave her salon I am thrilled with my results. Since Feb 2015, I've gotten services ranging from partial and full balayage in a variety of colors, color glosses, hair cuts, highlights, and the famed smoothing treatment with infra-red drying, which everyone needs to get if you have color treated or damaged hair. That smoothing treatment truly restores damaged, fried hair back to healthy, shiny, run-your-fingers-through-it amazingness. Also, her treatments LAST! The smoothness and color quality stay looking fresh 4-6 months after being done. Diane's technical skills along with high quality products definitely make for some of the best hair styling I've ever had and I'll keep coming back for more! GIRLS STAY AWAY!! After moving to San Francisco a few months ago I have been very scared to try a new salon as Im used to my mother doing my hair my whole life, but after hearing about Grupon I decided to try Diane for the 'cheap deal' BIG MISTAKE. Upon arriving she seemed annoyed that I had even shown up and as we walked into the salon it was clear that she hadn't finished with two other girls in there. She was rude from the beginning saying 'Well can you introduce yourselves'. I waited an HOUR AND A HALF while she finished with the other two girls in a tiny room that was way too hot, and had to ask 3 times for water (I should have left, I know) After finally sitting in the chair i explained what my mother normally does to my hair but made it very clear that Diane was able to do what she best thought.. as she proceeded to go on for hours about how such a master colourist she was. Finally after 3 HOURS she checked the colour..and i heard 'oh well urm this didn't turn out how I expected' At this point i just said wash it off and let me leave which she insisted she would fix it not even letting me see the colour that it had turned. She wiped it off with a dirty towel and reapplied a different color.. by this point i had been there for 3 and a half hours listening to her go on and on about her life which didn't interest me in the slightest. She finally washed the colour off and it seemed fine, all I wanted was to go home. She then proceeded to go on and on and on about why I shouldn't go on Yelp and write a bad review because 'this never happens to her and its my fault for making her do what my mother normally does' She begged me not to and even said she would 'BUY ME PIZZA' or would give me a free treatment or a free shampoo anything but give her a bad review.. well Im sorry Diane but other people need to know how completely and utterly incompetent you are. BUT THATS NOT ALL!!!!! after 4 AND A HALF HOURS I get home and look in the mirror properly and guess what.. I HAD BLUE HAIR!!!!!!!!! Yes completely electric blue hair all underneath. So a week later I went to a REAL hair salon and I didn't just have blue streaks underneath but all the back of it was Ginger. So thank you for ruining my hair Diane maybe you should attend some of those colouring classes that you claim to have 'taught'. read more
