Not only was the haircut completely opposite of what I asked for, but the length was aggressively chopped off without consent. I wanted shape and movement -- not a primary school uniform haircut. I now resemble an 8-year-old schoolboy, which was definitely not on my vision board. The most disappointing part? Zero accountability. No apology. No attempt to fix it. Just vibes and scissors. A haircut can grow back, sure -- but professionalism and listening skills should already be there. I never write reviews but I feel like something needs to be said about how bad of an experience I had with Rudy Alfaro. I have never had a problem before, I am pretty easy going and my hair is easy. Just some very thin highlights and a trim. I came out with tiger stripes in front, dark hair in back and a mullet. He did not follow any of my instructions even though we went over it many times. I mean who only puts highlights in the front of your head? Worst of all when I was unhappy he refused to fix it for a week and even charged me extra for the toner! I went home crying because I had a wedding in a week and I felt like I couldn't leave my house. In case you think I was being dramatic, I did shell out the money to get it fixed at another salon. I walked in and everyone went "wow, what the hell did he do!" It took the stylist 5 hours to fix it and I ended up paying another $400. Despite this, I did not receive a refund and there was no accountability. Rudy should not be allowed to do women's hair, period. So unless you want to spend a fortune getting it fixed, find another stylist. read more

It was easy to schedule an appointment and I was able to be seen within a week of my purchase. The salon is beautiful and very clean! Lauren was my hair stylist and she did an incredible job of what I wanted! She was honest about what style balayage would work with my dark hair and look good. I wanted an subtle ashy balayage with a very minimal trim/framing and she was able to perfectly accomplish what I envisioned. What a horrible experience! I purchased a Groupon for full highlights and got scheduled for an appointment with Lauren. Upon arrival, she wanted to discuss my hair color history, which was totally fine and expected. When I told her that I'd been coloring my hair with permanent color, like most 42 years old women, she told me we had limited options for highlight. So, instead of advising me that the end result color could differ from the color I imagined (like every hair colorist would do), she pulled up a photo from her phone, pointed at a picture of a hair with VERY DIFFERENT base color and asked me if I would be ok with that result. The photo showed a very bad highlight job, so I got scared because Lauren was very young, which made me realize, she was still learning. No problem with that but since she wanted to do the same bad highlight colors on me, we agreed I would be just getting a refund for my Groupon and we will cancel the appointment. I was reassured by her that I can still get a refund for my unused purchase. I left the place frustrated but it really wasn't the end of the world. When I got to my car, I pulled up the Groupon, reached out for customer service and I was told I could no longer receive a refund (the voucher was purchased the month prior) and I should just try to still redeem it with the merchant in order not to lose the money. So I went back, trying to see what my options were. I started talking to Lauren about what Groupon told me and she was also checking their policy. Then, another hair stylist stepped in and was trying to explain me how Groupon worked and she was telling me that they always lose money on Groupon and other complains about the voucher, not really related to my issue. I just wanted to know, how can we find the middle ground where I don't have to lose the full $120. At this point, a guy, claiming himself as the manager, stepped over (he was next to us working on someone's hair) and started yelling at me that he overheard EVERYTHING and that I needed to deal with Groupon and I had to leave the store otherwise he would call police on me. At this point, he also stepped back to his client he was already working on and started complaining about me and clients who always want their money back. For a service I never received, yeah, very upsetting, indeed! I guess, for this manager, it's ok if someone loses $130, as long as it's not him...and he had the audacity threatening with police. Wow! Now clearly, Lauren is young and still learning, nothing wrong with that and the issue wasn't really that she couldn't do the hair I wanted. The problem is with this store, their policy, and the manager, or whoever this guys really was, in particular. If Lauren wasn't taught how to express correctly to a client that there's a chance that the client's expectations won't be met without giving her one choice only as a result, that's not her fault. Unfortunately, her communication and customer service skills won't get much improvement while working here, since she's learning from a manager who yells at customers and makes police threats just because someone wants a refund for a service she didn't even get. They said they didn't carry it, but they could purchase it or I could. I called them back to ask how much I would need for that amount. They said they'd call me back with an answer. Abby Mazer was my stylist and despite my ridiculously thick hair and inability to stay awake during the appointment, she was incredibly kind and friendly and able to do my hair exactly how I wanted. Especially considering that my hair is naturally dark, I was surprised there were no extra charges for Toner, unlike how past reviews have said there are. In general, the salon is beautiful and everyone is extremely sweet and willing to work with whatever you want. I showed her pictures of my previous balayage that I liked but she argued with me about the brightness of the color and told me she couldn't tell what I wanted off several pictures. I didn't appreciate feeling like I had to argue about what I wanted, I've never had that happen at a salon before. She didn't make me feel welcome or heard at all and she didn't speak with me the entire time. She was really rough with my head as well so I spent most of the time in pain. When I tried to assess the color she told me to stop playing with my hair so she could cut it and see the next person. I asked for layers and didn't get any put in and the color is too light so it doesn't look like anything was done to it. I was looking for a new salon and will keep looking. read more

I bought a Groupon for a cut and balayage at Salon de Vive (I knew to be careful with a Groupon so I checked yelp first and the salon had good reviews and people had good experiences with using Groupon there). I called to make an appointment and since they don't take color appointments after 4 and I work until 5, I had to take a Saturday appointment about 3 and a half weeks later - ok, no problem. On the phone when I made my appointment, I said I had the Groupon for a balayage and was told that's fine. The day of my appointment comes and I go in with my hair up in a bun. As soon as my stylist (Abby) took down my hair, she said there was no way she could do a balayage due to my roots only being grown out about 3 inches. And not kindly - apparently another girl came in that morning with the same problem and the stylist was very frustrated with this, deciding to take it out on me, and spent a LONG time explaining that "people don't know how it works". I was embarrassed and confused, because as far as I knew, there weren't any requirements for getting this treatment done. She patronizingly told me that since her manager was nice, they would still accept my Groupon since it was roughly the value of what she would be doing instead. She promised that my hair would like just like a balayage. Through out the application of my color, we didn't talk much, which was fine with me. She did have some uncomfortable interactions with another stylist and made catty comments to me about the other girl, which was very uncomfortable. Throughout this, she continues to explain how it's not her fault that she can't do the balayage, and asked me if I had ever even seen a picture of one, which felt very condescending. Eventually she finishes my hair, and it is pretty much dark brown on the top and immediately turns back to the same blonde I had before....not what I wanted at all. She then cut my hair - luckily it was what I wanted with layers around my face, although she didn't ask. I left feeling embarrassed and unhappy with my hair. I really didn't even want to call back and have someone else fix it, because the environment was just uncomfortable. I'm glad they still accepted my Groupon, but due to the attitudes and lack of customer service skills, I will definitely not be going back. read more

I had a groupon for full balayage and haircut and scheduled an appointment with Beata based on other yelp reviews. I absolutely loved my results! Beata made sure to clarify exactly what I wanted and continued to check in on what I thought throughout the process. The final result was beautiful and this was actually the first time I've had my hair colored and not returned a few days for it to be tweaked. Beata also worked very quickly and the entire appointment only lasted about 2 hours. The only downside was scheduling, as they do not seem to schedule groupon clients on Saturdays so I had to pick a random weekday when I could leave early from work. They also do not add tip on credit/debit cards, but you can use Zelle or cash for tip. Overall a great experience and I would highly recommend Beata. read more

I don't normally take the time to write reviews, but since I'm new to Chicago and have been looking for a good waxing location, I wanted to give this place a shout out. I believe my search for my go to salon is over. I purchased a Groupon for a brazilian wax with Skin by Cristina and I'm completely satisfied. Salon de Vive itself is really beautiful. Warm colors and rich fabrics, all while maintaining a young and fresh atmosphere. The waxing room was clean and had nice lighting. I met with Cristina and immediately she made me feel at home. I've had several waxes before, so the whole process was nothing new for me, but even still, Cristina guided me through very comfortably. Some waxers talk talk talk, but Cristina had the perfect balance of conversation without running your ear off. Once the wax was over, Cristina mentioned that she offers her customers $35 dollar brazilians, which is cheaper than I've ever found in both Chicago and Los Angeles. I couldn't believe it would cost so little! I will definitely be coming back. Lastly, I was in and out in a total of 20 minutes, which included a little wait at the beginning because I was early for my appointment. I can't say whether the service is any good here because though I showed up for my apt 15 minutes early and waited almost 15 minutes past my apt time, no one bothered to come out. She was so sweet...great to chat with, outgoing, funny, feels like your BFF is cutting your hair. However, my micromanaging side reared it's ugly head when we had to recut my hair 3 times. I asked for a stacked bob...didn't think that it was that difficult or needed more explanation. Yes, she just graduated from Aveda so sure I'll cut her a little slack. In the end: we got a perfect bob. I got a really funny feeling about the owner though. Every time he would pass by; he was really condescending to her right in front of me...is it because she's new? I don't know why this place deserve 4.5 stars. Base on my experience few days ago I chose Salon de vive because of the reviews from Yelps and plus the Groupon deal at the time. I had a highlight (picture) and my black natural hairs starts to show up. I contacted this salon and told the owner ( she was my hair stylist) that I m interested to do a single process color to cover my highlight and the black hair, one tone color and I want it to be brown color. I show the Groupon deal which is $65 ( include cut, single color and conditioner) first of all, she told me that I have to pay additional charge more $50 to do one single process color ( means I have to pay total $115. I agreed to pay. It took her 3 more hours to finish my hair. I saw the result after she blowed my hair that it is not what I want and my hair still remained the highlight!! My hair has 2 tone colors!! What the heck!? This is what I pay for $115 to let her screw up my hair? How come the owner of the hair salon doesn't know how to cut and color ?! I complained at her immediately and stood up that she did very bad job. She did not admit it( I want all of you to judge by the pictures I have taken) She still asked me for service charge. How dare she is asking me after she screw up my hair?! I told her I will pay but I m only pay $60 for her time and the electricity that she was using on me. When I arrived at my appointment my stylist sat me down in the chair and told me he was in a rush. He didn't even bother to introduce himself nor discuss what I wanted done to my hair. He took one look at my locks, asked me if I had gotten a shag haircut. I said "No, I have layers." And he told me not to get layers in my hair "Because it makes me look like I have no hair at all" (Really!? Thanks for that.) He then yanked my hair into a few careless clips and went to start mixing dye for highlights. At this point, I was already leaning forward in my chair ready to take off my smock, leave and, forget about the whole thing. Well, he returned and started painting up my hair saying "you already have highlights, so I'm just going to do the touch-ups on you" (I had a prepaid groupon for a cut and full highlights, not simply touch ups) had he discussed or even asked me why I'm here, he would have found out that I actually wanted to go lighter also. I'm an easy going person, so I nodded and kind of agreed with him. Two minutes later when I actually noticed that he was only painting my roots, I tried to clarify what I still hadn't gotten to say about my own hair in the first place. He got really flustered and told me "NOT to upset him because, HE was the one doing my hair" (Is that a threat... or something?) When I asked him what exactly I said that had bothered him, he had to walk away and stormed off to the back. I already had a few foils in, I walk to the nearest semi-available hair dresser and ask her to help me wash them out because I wanted to leave. Her name was Vi, and she brought me into the back to see what was the matter. She assessed the situation, talked to me, my stylist, and then the two of us together. What a saint! I was 4 minutes late to my appointment and I'm sorry for that. But there is no reason or excuse to treat anybody like that, especially a customer!! Ultimately we put our differences aside, shook hands, and he worked on my hair. It was still probably the most uncomfortable hair appointment I've ever experienced. When the foils were done he rinsed my hair like a maniac, and styled my hair in what I consider a passive-aggressive fashion (Aiming the blow dryer right at my face). ------------------------------------------------------ The place was cute and trendy, comfortable not overly vogue. I actually ended up staying for the services. And would return to this salon perhaps with a different stylist. Stephanie is the BEST! Seriously, I may just be THE pickiest person when it comes to my hair and Stephanie never disappoints. I have this giant head of Diana Ross frizz that Steph handles with care but also whips into shape. We've colored it, corrected it, highlighted, keratin--the works, and it always comes out exactly the way I want it but never fried. Recently i brought her a pic of Eva Mendez and said 'Are you a magician because I want this hair!" Well, she is one after all. An all over root touch up, highlights, and a glaze transformed my 3 shades of brassy locks into soft brown and golden perfection. She also does one hell of a blow out. In the past I would always have to go home and touch up with a flat iron but with Steph I'm ready to hit the road with my bouncy, silky new do. In the past I would always read reviews of stylists and hope to find my match and after living in Chicago for 5 years I finally found her.
