LOVE Salon de Vive...although I'd probably love anywhere salon if they had Stefanie. I originally found her through a Groupon deal for partial highlights and cut. I'm so glad I tried it out because I knew right then I had found my hair gal. She is so sweet, full of energy, and definitely knows how to give you exactly what you want for your hair. She takes time at the beginning to really hear you out and listen to your concerns and desires. Then, she gracefully provides her opinion with a take it or leave it attitude, which I love. The second time I went I decided I wanted to go dark for fall. That was not the best decision I have ever made, but it was only because I didn't like it, nothing due to what Stefanie did. It did look really good, and she did exactly what I asked her to do...I just couldn't get used to my hair that dark. She gave me her cell phone number and had me text her all week to tell her how I was feeling about it. She was more than willing to have me come back in to do something different, but by the end of the week I was used to it and the richness of the dye wasn't as powerful as it was right away. Just knowing she was more than willing to go above and beyond to make sure I was happy after the fact was awesome. The Salon is in Roscoe and super cute. Very open, airy, trendy feel without being stuck up. Prices are about average but with Stefanie you definitely get the biggest bank for your buck. read more

I went to Beata for years at another salon -- I have very thick, straight Asian hair and at the time it was also very long. She was always able to create a perfect, flattering shape and also change things up a bit so it felt fresh each time (not easy to do with long hair!). I recently moved back to Chicago after several years away and found that my beloved stylist had changed salons. (Luckily she always gets rave reviews, so it was easy to track her down at Salon de Vive.) I've been growing out a formerly-chic, supershort bowl cut for several months now and it had gotten to a critical point: in the right hands, it could become a cute bob, and in the wrong hands it might turn into the dreaded "can I speak to a manager" hair. I'm so happy I was able to reconnect with Beata, because she worked her magic on my hair and created a really cute, precise, flattering bob that is easy to take care of and will grow out beautifully. I'm so relieved that I found Beata again -- I trust her with my hair 100% and she has turned my scary, awkward-growing-out period into a fun opportunity to wear a few different styles as my hair grows out. I was seen right away, no extra wait time. Always good for a busy person. Abby did a good job on my hair. She was cool. I could've done without the pretentious conversation around me and the cattiness between the hair stylists, just to keep it 100. Abby and the other girl kinda had a catty moment. It's cool it happens, but I don't go to the salon for that vibe. Vibes are everything to me and that kind of killed my "relaxing me time" vibe I was trying to have. I cant say enough great things about my first experience here last Friday. I was lucky to have Abby as my stylist and it really was a game changer. She was SO fast--a full highlight, haircut and blowout in just a little over 1.5 hours. This really helped me out as I was "working from home" and their wi-fi connection made it incredibly easy to work the entire time on my laptop- I didn't miss a thing at work. I called to make sure I was getting the right product/procedure that is supposed to smoothen and relax my thick curly hair and frizz ( I actually want to make sure there was some formaldhyde)....Since I wasted my money at a different salon in Gold Coast claiming to do the same. Natalie has been cutting/styling my hair for probably a solid 7-8 years now. She is one of those gems that once you find, you cherish and never want to let go! I am a fair-skinned natural blonde who, for the greater part of my life, could get away with my natural color from day to day. However, after hitting my 40's, these ashy gray-ish blonde strands started taking over so I decided it was time to even things out. Let's just say I was a pretty terrified grown woman who had never colored her hair before. Yikes! I am giving this salon a 1 star just because I was taken in spite of being late for the appointment. I believe the salon and the staff have no respect for the customers. The stylist gave me a very rough attitude in spite of me telling her the reason for being late was the fact I got stuck due to a recent shooting in the city (I was in the same building where the shooting happened). Instead of being sensitive about it and empathize with me, she behaved as if she was obliging taking me. When I entered the salon, I was told to wait for 5 minutes, I waited for almost 25 minutes and then Abby came and pretended she was not aware I was there, she thought I would not come, my hair is not the length I mentioned over phone etc. To me this is a very unprofessional approach to greet a first time customer. Even if she did not want to take me, she would have mentioned right when I entered and I would not have waited 25 minutes. It seemed she wanted to get even with me. Moreover, I saw and heard her making faces and talking about me with her peer stylist. I could have made a big scene on this treatment and left the salon right away but had to get over with it just because my hair was already dyed by then. By skills, I do agree Abby is aware of the field she is in and did a good job matching my color for the touch up. However, I do not understand why my full hair was not treated with single process color? Why only roots which were outgrown? When I asked, she mentioned single color is root touch up only. While, other salons consider single color as global color/base color of entire hair. I had purchased a groupon for single color and expected her to match (or refresh) my hair color with the same color I had previously. I would have rated this pace ZERO star for the professionalism but since I was taken and color match (in spite of the confusion on root touch up or single process) was good, I am rating this place 1 star. They are not understanding, remarkably rude, not welcoming, treat customers terribly, will screw you over with Groupons, services, and prices. I am really picky when it comes to my hair. I've never colored it or dyed it, save for a few fun highlights when I was a teen. But this time I did my homework and saw that along with great reviews for Salon de Vive, my sister raved about the place too. I booked an appointment with Stefanie for a cut and color; I knew I needed to try out some subtle color at one point (even though I love my dark hair), so I showed her some pics I liked of highlights and I asked her advice. She was super helpful and creative, and could tell I was really nervous so she made me feel comfortable. We decided on some caramel highlights to accentuate my dark color and they came out fabulous! Well, let me start off with I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO MISTREATED IN MY LIFE BEFORE, neither has my 13 year old. We got a Groupon for partial highlights for my kid. I dyed my hair when i was 12,( 35 now) and I come from ussr, Soviet union. So I'd assume it's OK for a 13 year have a little but of partial highlights for the summer, consider she's been good in school and has very unmanageable hair, so its time for refreshment and a cut. But according to this awful place SHE'S TOO YOUNG. upon entering the place, you expect "hello, how are you, welcome.." right!? WRONG. NOT AT THIS DUMP we were greeted with a drawn face of our hairstylist who had obviously been having a shitty day already.. When she asked who the appointment was she responded with, mind you, the face is till a frown "OMG SHE'S JUST SO YOUNG FOR HIGHLIGHTS" Umm lady, if your salon has age guidelines, OK, I'll follow them, just say so, BUT IT DOESN'T, SO HOW DARE YOU DISRESPECTING ME AND MAKING MY KID FEEL LIKE SHIT!???? what is wrong with you!? I respectful said "it's OK, we're not getting a complete transformation here, it's just highlights, will you take her or not?!" she said "fine, OK.." OK so from this point on, there should be no problems, no issues NO ATTITUDE, right!? well, not according to our hairstylist. When she asked what we wanted I said " something like this" and showed a picture my daughter and I had previously selected.. To which the stylist protested with "but this isn't highlights, it's blah blah, something different" OK lady, I said " fine this is what I was told, that this is highlights, that's why we wanted setting LIKE THIS." Every 13 year old has some sort of crazy shit happening to their hair these days and my kid all of a sudden is being judged for it!? Wow! I'm an amazing mother and raised my child on my own to be a decent human being. I do spiritual work for homeless and diseased. I work with every age every stage of PEOPLE, I get my hair done at different salons every 6-8 months because of Groupon deals, trying to save some money AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN TREATED LIKE TOTAL SHIT EVER IN MY LIFE BEFORE. you have no rights talking to me the way you did upon me entering your salon, making me feel so unwelcomed and humiliated because I showed you a picture and didn't know the details... So what, you asked me what I wanted or had in mind.. So I showed it to you... I too bought the Groupon and was not satisfied. First I was parking in front of the salon 10 min before my appointment and I get a call canceling my appointment because the stylist called in sick. Ok things happen, I'm angry,but I calmly reschedule. I also have Dark hair that I have had highlighted before to exactly what I showed Abby my stylist. Immediately I am told it is impossible! We could get lighter but it may be different colors from the top and bottom because I have color in my hair (which again I have had before). I would have easily paid more to achieve the look I wanted (and have done so before) but was told again it was impossible. When asking questions to try to find out what I can expect my hair to look like I got "I don't know... I don't know what we are going to get"! Not something I want to hear from my stylist...so when she takes the foils out my hair is dark brown and bright yellow highlights. I calmly tell her I really don't like this color can we tone it to blend better and she gets rude and says this is what you asked for and I already told you I was going to blend it to match your ends. I try to tell her I can't see my ends and if it looks anything like the top I need it toned to a different color. Again rude and talking nonsense you can't even understand. So she tones it to an acceptable color, gives me a 5 min hair cut and styles. Charges me $60 for the "$40 toner up charge". I paid $85 for the Groupon and $60 for toner to fix the horrible color and I got a color and style nothing like I wanted and looks like I got it done at a beauty school free event. Ugg. Yes I read the fine print that said up charge for $40 and no I don't want to come back for you to try to fix it. I was very unhappy with my experience here and DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING A GROUPON. THEIR GROUPONS ARE A SCAM. I came in wanting a single process color, but the hairdresser told me it wouldn't look right and argued with me about doing highlights instead. Doing highlights resulted in a $20 upcharge from the original Groupon I had bought (only after I advocated for myself that I would only pay the Groupon difference between single process and full highlights). I could do $20 if it was going to make my hair look better, and I trusted my stylist at this point. But then there was a $40 charge for toner. Seriously?! I have never had to pay for toner the million other times I've had my hair highlighted at other salons with or without Groupons. And $40 for their terrible product? Absurd... My hair was bright, brassy yellow without the toner so I didn't really have a choice and agreed to do it. With toner, it still came out embarrassingly yellow! ...and the hairdresser's response? You should really try purple shampoo. At the end of the service, the hairdresser validated my single process Groupon and tried to charge me $80 in cash for the highlights and toner. Highlights were $20, toner was $40... I owed her $60 and that's what I paid after yet another argument. I liked her personality overall so I left without too much of a fuss, but the service itself was terrible. I shouldn't have had to go through any of that, there shouldn't be hidden fees with Groupons or miscalculations with charging, and at the end of the day, I left with yucky, yellow hair. I found Salon de Vive on groupon while I was looking for deals on a haircut and balayage treatment. I did my research and by research I mean checking yelp reviews, facebook reviews and google maps reviews. From what I read across those platforms I decided Salon de Vive was the right choice for me! I had a back and forth exchange with the salon on Facebook messenger where I was able to ask questions and get answers efficiently. One question being "should I be prepared for any extra charges?" (because for those who get groupons - and i mean in general - sometimes there are overages that catch you out of nowhere after the service is complete) to which they answered "there are no added fees." And they weren't lying! I had an appointment scheduled with Beata and I was so excited because I came across so many reviews raving about the way she does balayage. It's true, Beata is just wonderful! She was very nice and she really understood exactly what I was going for. She was also quick to answer all the questions I had about maintaining the balayage. BEWARE! My hair was completely destroyed. I had my tape-in extensions moved up and a balayage. I was completely mortified when I got home to see there is glue everywhere in my hair and my extensions were not even fully put back together. I sent Vi, the owner, also the woman who did my hair a message saying what was going on. She offered to fix "a couple" but in reality the whole process needed to be re done. The following day my hair was coming out in clumps. My hair has been destroyed. The extensions I have usually last me ABOUT A YEAR. I bought these a month ago for $581. They were no good anymore. I went back 2 days after because that was the time Vi had to see me again. I went into the salon and told her my hair has been falling out in clumps, there is glue all in my hair and my extensions are not even taped correctly. She was saying it was my extensions that were the issue, that she did not bleach my extensions and that this had nothing to do with her work. Keep in mind, she was the one who did a full balayage 2 days prior. I asked if I could do some kind of refund because of the fact that my hair has been destroyed. She screamed in my face and said " NOW YOUR BULLSHITTING ME GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE" and I was so in shock I responded "what" because I am just a 20 year old girl going to an adult, a mother, a business owner, telling her about how my hair has been damaged. Continuing, she said " YES GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE" and DUG HER NAILS into my arm and dragged me out of the salon. I was traumatized and did not know what to do so I called the POLICE to come because this woman put her hands on me, assaulted me. read more

Bought a groupon to get a bayalage, I never dye my hair so I was very excited to try this salon out as the pictures looked great on yelp. When I arrived the stylist I had sat me in the chair asked a few questions and then immediately started on my hair, and it felt like she couldn't get my out of her chair quick enough (she also informed me that if I wanted my hair to look like the picture we'd have to tone it which cost extra, totally cool no biggie). She instantly started putting the bleach on my hair while tugging very hard and again working at light speed. After what felt like 20 minutes with the bleach on I was in the chair getting shampooed. She came back with the toner which was left on for a little while and then it was to the chair for my hair cut and blow out. The hair cut turned out amazing! The blow out, also amazing! What was not amazing was the fact I walked out with ORANGE hair. Which after doing research online in a baseball hat at home, comes from not lifting the hair enough and not toning it enough, aka not taking the time. I then ended up going to another salon I have been to in the past to get my orange hair fixed, adding more cost onto the whole situation and another 3 hours in the salon. read more

I like the length of my cut but noticed it's quite uneven at the bottom after one wash. My hairstylist made me feel a bit uncomfortable and self conscious about my dandruff which was super awkward. I've been coloring my hair now for 13 years. I usually go to the same person but have branched out to a few others that I know every once in a while. So branching out for me isn't something I do very often. However Beata will be my new go to from now on! I called trying to get in the day I called since I'm going out of town soon and work everyday till then. At first I wasn't able too but Beata had some cancellations and called me back right away. She was able to take my grown out yellow bleached hair and turn it in to a beautiful cool blonde like I wanted. I am absolutely in love with the color and the cut! She did such an amazing job and quickly too. My hair is super thick and usually takes about 3 hours to color and cut and she was able to do it 2! I purchased the single process color Groupon, and came in for an appointment on Saturday. I told my stylist, Beata, that I was wanting to go white blonde (I'm already light blonde naturally). She didn't think I would be happy with that, and recommended full highlights - but, she only had one hour for me because I booked a single process color, and needed two hours to do the highlights. I let her know I had a big event coming up on Wednesday morning. She had no more appointment space, but instead of just letting me leave, she volunteered to come in 2.5 hours earlier than she was scheduled on Tuesday morning just to accommodate me! I was very happy with how my hair turned out. I still kinda want to go white blonde, and probably will in the coming months, but what she did looks great and feels great. All in all, I highly recommend Beata, she totally knows her stuff and did a gorgeous job, but best of all - she went TOTALLY above and beyond for me, a brand new client. Service A++++! read more

In response to Tanjas negative review. I was in the Salon and witnessed her terrible reaction when she didn't get her way. The staff was very professional in trying to explain the Groupon terms and because she didn't like the answer she went into a tantrum raising her voice with obscenities. From looking at the other clients, this appears to be a great salon. I have incredibly thin hair that's hard to style, and while my hair dresser was really nice, I'm not sure it was anywhere near worth the $50 I spent for a trim. He put a lot of light hairspray in it and curled it a bit to give it more "body," but that all disappeared after about an hour and ultimately my hair looks pretty much the same as it did $50 ago (plus the coarse hairspray feel). Like I said, it seems like a good enough salon that I would recommend it to other people, but in my particular case I'd say it was a waste of money. read more

I went in for a full color and haircut and came out thoroughly disappointed. Emitt was the stylist that worked on my hair and he said he had over 20 yrs of experience but after seeing what he did with my hair, I would have never guessed. Hair coloring: I went in with around 1.5" of exposed dark brown/black roots and dark golden highlights. I did not want to bleach my hair again but wanted to keep it as light as I can w/full color and no bleach. I knew my hair would end up being a little darker but I was able to go medium brown w/out bleach with a previous stylist. Emitt ended up coloring my hair back to my natural hair color. And did not get my roots. Haircut: I asked for long layers. My haircut looked like a 10 year old cut it. The layers were not blended at all. I had an obvious short straight layer going around my head. My longer hair underneath looked like it was extensions, that's how obvious the layers looked. Stylist: He was nice, but came off a little fake. Like...he was trying to hard to be liked. That 's understandable in his industry. Overall: I'm not happy whatsoever. Complete waste of money. A week later (today) I went and got my haircut fixed at J. Gordon Designs w/Chloe. She also pointed out my roots were not colored and that my haircut was not blended and uneven. She fixed the cut. I went in with a groupon for baylage (cost me $130). I was told it would cost more since they would need to use a toner (ended up being $40!!!). I agreed. I had a picture of what I wanted and the woman said it would be no problem. I ended up with what were essentially chunky highlights on the bottom half of hair. I still have roots as no base color was added before the baylage/ombre I was supposed to get. I got a blowdry in to a flipped do reminiscent of "The Rachael", not the waves I had pictured. I ended up having to schedule a blowdry at another salon to get it styled how I wanted for my birthday that was the next day. The cut was fine but I ended up paying a lot of money to not get what I wanted at all. I am so exceedingly unhappy with my experience that it has compelled me to write my very first review. I brought the obligatory inspiration pictures to show my stylist during the consult, the cut was not faintly attempted or even considered. What I walked out of there with was a 1st year in beauty school basic trim, at best. My color-where do I even begin. Let me pause here and say the moral of the story is to trust your instincts. I live around the corner, which prompted the out of character happenstance appointment with this unknown salon, and there were so many red flags that I should have known better. An establishment that has been in the neighborhood for 20 years with only 46 reviews (all positive of course), that also boasts a moniker of recognition from 2007 in a trophy case? *Insert side eye roll here. I don't want to be presumptuous, but drawing the conclusion that this salon caters to a clientele that is not accustomed to, or rather doesn't even know what Yelp is, would be fair; 60+ I would assume. Clients who are perfectly content with a color touch up and the same trim every 6 weeks...or you know, a curler set in-between perms. I think I'm more disappointed in myself for not walking out. But I digress. Back to the color... "Chocolate brown" he says...wth is chocolate brown? At least give me some perspective here; are we talking milk chocolate or dark chocolate? Ha, I can laugh now because a week has passed but if I know a level 4 is way too dark, and you don't understand what I'm saying when I talk in terms of color level and then you turn your swatch over and say, "oh look, I turned it over and it says level 4". No. Just no. And now I have no recourse because he used permanent color on me even though I pleaded for semi or demi color. I will say this, the owner offered to have another stylist "fix" it which I emphatically declined because even I know I would completely lose any integrity that is left in my hair trying to lift this (almost black) color any lighter. My stylist was nice enough and this is not a reflection of him as a person, but that is the only positive thing I have to say about my experience with him. Essentially the SAME experience as Anna B. from 7/25/2013. He doesn't listen to what you want, and after seeing his technique I would venture to guess its because he simply can't. I found a Groupon for wax service; Christina is very professional and welcoming. I felt comfortable the whole time.. I was in and out in less than 30min. She uses good quality wax for sensitive skin; which I have always had an issue with. Totally worth the drive and very reasonably priced. read more

Just had my hair done by Beata and cannot stop smiling! I purchased the Groupon to try out this local salon in my neighborhood and I couldn't be happier. The salon ambiance is a perfect blend of elegance & homey from the chandeliers to the comfy couch in the waiting area. They use high end products like Aveda, Moroccan Oil & Kevin Murphy. The salon chairs are heated & vibrate and the wash bowls are actually comfortable. Beatty listened to what I wanted and delivered it perfectly with a wealth of knowledge and outstanding skill. I'm blonde so I'm pretty particular when it comes to finding a stylist and now I don't need to look any farther. Would highly suggest this salon! read more

I had a great experience here. I had the Groupon for full highlights. My stylist, Beata, was very kind and listened to exactly what I wanted done with my hair. She blended my blonde highlights perfectly, and even though I arrived a few minutes late (uber driver got lost) she took her time doing a wonderful job. I also asked for her to trim off just the split ends and that's exactly what she did. I love my new color!! Everyone here was very friendly.
