Transparent pricing is important when clients are trying to budget and compare services, especially for larger appointments or events. The lack of clarity made the experience frustrating and ultimately discouraged me from booking. I expressed my frustration politely to Kathryn and instead of rectifying the issue Kathryn Brash then proceeded to block me.

I didn't want/need a special curly cut, just needed someone to cut off 8inches and diffuse my hair, and let me leave. I was so incredibly clear with what I wanted. I said, "my hair is curly and will shrink up. Do not cut more than this amount off." The lady said "do you want it at your collarbone? I said "no. I want it longer, I want it at least to here" and i pointed to more than 4in below my collarbone. I was very clear. The lady washed my hair, and pulled my hair behind me and started cutting. I couldn't see what she was doing but she was cutting WAY shorter than we had talked about. It's above my collarbone before even getting dried. I have had my fair share of bad haircuts, but this is by far the worst. As it dries, it looks like a triangle or something from the 70s. It seems the woman was confused in what I asked for, but I wish she either communicated that she wasn't comfortable cutting my hair or asked for clarification. She also decided to turn a large portion of my hair into what I would describe as "curtain bangs". Interesting choice, especially on my curly hair. I did not want a blowout, just asked for a brief diffuse with the blow dryers. She acted like she didn't know what she was doing with the diffuser. I was charged $100 before tip. The pricing is not transparent or clear at all. Stylist was very nice but even with good vibes, you have to listen to customers. I will not be returning to any of the kisskissbangbang locations, and I will be telling everyone I know to steer clear, seems like the stylist could use some help with spatial awareness after the black cape goes on, since where you point is not as visible when wearing the cape.

I have very, very thick hair that's generally unruly, so when I get it cut, I basically expect a trim to make it look acceptable. Vicki is the first stylist I've ever had that understood how to properly cut thick, wavy/curly hair; it looks amazing! She also performs various color services, and those always turned out great, as well. She's not afraid to (politely) tell you that your idea won't work well; I had a couple of color and cut requests that she gently explained wouldn't work with my skin tone, hair type, and face shape. She offered some alternatives, and they were much better than what I had originally asked for! Vicki is also incredibly fun and friendly- you'll enjoy every minute in her chair. Vicki, I miss you!

I've been going here for a couple years and have had a couple friend switch to coming here as well. I highly recommend it. Most of the stylists have a strong client base, because they are good, so I recommend calling in advance for an appointment if you're a new client. She continued to refuse, then went on about how horrible my hair was. If you have anything but perfectly thick dark hair, do NOT schedule with Krystal. She was demeaning and rude.

There have been some gaps, especially when I lived out of state, but I was so glad to already know of a great stylist when I moved back to Indy. Alan is one of the only people I have ever felt like I could trust with my hair. He is the best! My most recent visit was this Tuesday afternoon. I did not have to wait long. I was early and my appointment began right on time. I could not be more pleased. I loved the Biolage shampoo he used on my hair, as well as the minty conditioner that left my scalp tingly. It had been two and a half years since my last cut so I had a long pony removed. Alan was kind enough to offer to mail it in to Locks of Love for me. He asked me some questions about how I wanted my hair and it is perfect. He left it just long enough that I can pull it back if I want, but I might wear it down more now because I love how he styled it. He was kind to me about my anxiety issues and I felt at ease being in this lovely shop. He even posed for a photo for me so I could show off what he cut off. I plan on returning more often to keep up on my lovely new do. The shop is right on the corner of 16th & Lynhurst in Speedway. It is nicely decorated with a comfortable waiting area of chairs and lounges. I love everything from the amount of lighting to the temperature being just perfect as well. Not warm and not freezing with a blasting a/c. The other man that was working is also a sweetheart. It is a relatively small shop that is not overwhelming like some others I have been to that are so busy that you are being rushed in and out. My cut was quite reasonably priced, especially for such skill and service. I feel well taken care of here. There is definitely a reason I have returned many times over the ten years since I first discovered Appearances. I have had nothing but the best experiences here and I could not give a higher recommendation for haircuts. I can't wait to go back.

I started coming here to get my hair cut a number of years ago after finally giving up on the…read morequick, super-inexpensive chains, and also being turned off by the stuffier, high-priced salons. For me, Rose-Dore is in the Goldilocks zone for hair cuts. Nan has been my stylist since I started coming here, and she always does a great job! My hair is wavy to curly depending on the humidity level, and can be a disaster if cut wrong (see previous note on giving up on the quick, super-inexpensive chains). She also gives me no grief about waiting way too long at times to come in for a cut, and also no grief about not coloring away the gray. I'm too lazy/low maintenance to deal with roots...so figure it is better to just stay natural...(see previous note about stuffy higher-priced salons). The atmosphere is really relaxed and prices are very reasonable. Same week appointments are typically available. Rose-Dore is a great northwest side option for a relaxed, no-nonsense, but high-quality hair cut!

The above post-it is obviously in response to this negative review I wrote, because that note went up right after I published this review (and not right after my latest haircut)... -- My first experience was great. Nikki Young was great. 5 stars all the way! I continued seeing Nikki until she moved. She no longer works there, and my next experience was great as well. Emily. 5 stars again! I was told that Emily (I think) is the one who cuts men's hair, and she did a perfect job. That was December 9th, 2014. Then I went in and set up an appointment again in March. This time, I was told that they ALL cut men's hair. So Stephanie ended up cutting my hair. She'd been working there 35 years. Got in my car. Looked at it in the mirror. It looked awful. I felt so embarrassed I couldn't even go into Starbucks. It looked like a rushed drill sergeant cut my hair. I have photos of this haircut in case anyone believes I'm making this up. In fact maybe I'll post them in this review. There was a section above one ear that was clipped very short and looked like the clippers were used there and then stopped. I drove back and showed her the section. I said that she can just cut it all short if necessary. She said "That won't be necessary," and she cut both sides short, blended it better, then gave me a mirror. It was now short on the sides and long on top and in the back. I suggested she cut the back shorter to match the length of the sides. I already felt sick going in to tell her it had to be fixed, but I did pay her and also tipped her 20%, so felt I deserved to have a decent haircut. After the "fix," I just wanted to leave, because Stephanie said, "Okay, now it looks better." without asking for any confirmation. I felt like I was being picky, but it wasn't getting fixed and I didn't know how to tell her that it looked TERRIBLE. In the end I gave up and left, deciding that I'll pay someone else to try to fix it. When I got home I took another look. One sideburn was an inch lower than the other sideburn. I fixed that. Easy. Though it is telling how someone could miss that. Maybe she's great at cutting women's hair--maybe she just doesn't know how to cut men's hair. My friend Meredith said that maybe her eyes aren't very good. Maybe she forgot her glasses or contacts the day she cut my hair. I'm not trying to insult anyone, I'm just trying to explain this. All I know is it looks ridiculous and I have photos. I can't understand how a person can cut hair for 35 years and not take one last look at the overall haircut and notice a chunk that's cut shorter than the rest of the hair, or looking straight on, notice that one sideburn is so much different from the other (the hair was not only lower, but longer... one sideburn was taken care of, and the other was not). Also if you glance at any part of it, it has a long tuft here and there peeking out from the surrounding short hair. In addition to that, she asked me if I ever used "product" in my hair. I stated that Nikki Young (who used to cut my hair) had used Aveda Pure-formance for men, and I loved that product so much I bought it myself, but aside from that, I hate product and very rarely use any product at all. Despite my saying this, Stephanie used American Crew Fiber (which I hate...it's like putting glue in your hair). I'd advise against getting your hair cut there if you're a guy, unless you can get Emily. Be sure you tell them Emily (or Stephanie... maybe it's Stephanie. Either Stephanie is the horrible one and Emily is the great one, or Emily is the horrible one and Stephanie is the great one. Now I don't remember). The owners of Rose Dore do not care to find out about my experience. I'm just a customer. I'd rather have Donald Trump's hair than the messed up disaster she gave me at Rose Dore. What's telling is that after posting this review, not only did no one reach out to me to correct their error or inquire about my experience, but also a glowing review popped up 7 days after my review was posted. The vibes in this places are ah-mazing. Plants and unique decor fill the room, & every staff member there was so kind and welcoming. I waited a few short minutes and Meg started my session. Meg was so nice and easy to talk to. & you can tell she knows what she's doing. I felt like I had known her for years even though it was our first time meeting. After a couple relaxing hours, Meg worked MAGIC on my hair. She gave me exactly what I wanted. I am so obsessed & I feel like such a bad bitty!! I will definitely be coming back in a couple months. Overall the color, cut & blowout was $210 and worth every penny!
