[Review #751] 2023-037 After 20+ years with my hair stylist/colorist, Shirley, I haven't done much with my hair since her retirement about a decade ago. I've been butchering my hair myself & occasionally using packaged dyes since then. I don't have any girlfriends who uses a local stylist, & I used to trek to Sherman Oaks for my gal. I wanted someone closer for me, & possibly my teenage who's interested in hair fashion as well as color; though I'm holding off on that for a couple of years until she's in high school. I thought I would try Groupon for a trial run of my next permanent stylist so I'm not paying full price in case it doesn't work out. Salon Farouk popped up on my feed for a "one single process color with shampoo & blow-dry"... what caught my eye was the model's hair -- rich, gorgeous locks. While I needed a haircut more than I need my hair colored, I wouldn't mind covering my grays that somehow exploded almost overnight during COVID-19 lockdown. I paid for the deal in spring & promptly forgot about it until I received a reminder of its upcoming expiration in 2 weeks. I called in & spoke with a friendly voice, Norma, & booked my appointment just days before the expiration. Although Salon Farouk is located on busy PCH, they have a private lot so no parking issues here. The salon has plenty of stations & 3 hair washing stations; the space is clean, open, & bright. Stylist Norma Abdous was stationed by the door, finishing up on a blowout for her client. I got seated in a couple of mins., then perusing their color portfolio to figure out my color. I was debating on a mahogany, dark blue or purple (dark so it matches my black hair but a pop of color in the sun); I picked blue-black. I was covered with a cape, & Norma carefully greased my hairline around to my nape before painting my hair. She was about 2/3s done before running out of color. I'm kinda surprised since I've lost about 1/3 of my hair during lockdown. ＼(｀0´)／ Maybe I have more hair than what the rubber band shows? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The painting took about 45-mins., which was fairly quick; my norm when I had more hair was ~75-mins. I guess the coloring process has advanced, only waited 30-mins. before getting shampooed. WARNING... do not wear earrings as they might come off during the wash! Mine did, luckily it was large enough to be caught by the drain catch. Semi-rookie mistake since it's been awhile I visited a hair salon. The color process with shampoo & blowout took almost 2 hours, way faster than my younger visits. Norma did a wonderful job in taking care of my grays. I'll be back to consult with her for my 13 YO after her current cut grows in, & when she's ready for the world of hair fashion. read more

My stylist was Tiffany, I found her on Instagram. She mostly posts her color transformation but the only way you can get even vibrant color is if you know how to safely and even do bleach. So i trusted her with my virgin black hair. And she successfully took me back to my favorite blonde It took a couple hours but totally worth it. My hair is still strong and healthy and luscious. Disclaimer: my hair is very thick, handles bleach very well and i have had blonde before so I knew what to expect. Please do not book her thinking you will get the very same results, everyone's hair is different but she will work with you to discuss what your goals are, realistic expectations and time. I had my first appointment at the salon today and Tiffany was my stylist. She is a great conversationalist, made some awesome recommendations that I said yes to, and I walked out of the salon with fantastic looking hair! I already made my follow up appointment with her in a couple of months and we have a new game plan for my style. Also found out from her Instagram that she is great at doing funky hair colors and rainbow/unicorn hair. I'm so excited I finally found a new stylist! In response to the negative review that Brenda left, I was there when she stormed in and yelled at my stylist, Tiffany. She was 20 minutes late, and Tiffany was just finishing up my hair. Tiffany was very professional and went to go try and let her know how much longer it would be. The owner was also very professional and took her right away, but she kept yelling at him and being awful. I even heard her yelling at him from behind the store! On a MUCH lighter note, Tiffany made my hair BEAUTIFUL!!! My hair is so soft, vibrant, and it felt like it didn't take that long as a whole. I blinked and then BAM! My hair was green!! After the horrendous experience of seeing Brenda verbally harass both the owner and Tiffany, it didn't ruin my experience. Tiffany is the best! I had gotten her the first time through chance; I was supposed to see someone else. I was so happy that I have for the first time in my life been loyal to a stylist. I have liked some in the past, but I usually go where the wind blows. We have done some fun colors that I never thought I'd do. I finally took the plunge and have loved every change. I have gotten a Brazilian blowout, multiple colors, bleaching, multiple haircuts and have been happy with all. She always discusses her recommendations and goes over the prices before she starts anything, but it is a no pressure environment. I do feel like if you're going to splurge on your hair, take the recommendations and do it right to make it last longer and keep your hair healthier. But if I wanted to cut down the cost a bit, no pushback, no pressure. And, the salon clearly has protocol so I have always felt safe to go, even during this time. Getting my hair cut here was something of an odd experience: I got to town badly needing a haircut and after a quick Yelp search I called and was given an appointment with Farouk the next morning. Yay! When I arrived he greeted me and introduced me to one of his other stylists and asked if it was okay if she cut my hair. Sure, no problem! There were good reviews of everybody here. Farouk then proceeded to get out his cell phone and talk to someone the entire time I was getting my hair cut. While sitting on the couch in front. To me this was entirely unprofessional, but to each his own. The awkwardness continued when one of the other stylists sat down behind the front desk and appeared to glare at my stylist the entire time. Or me, I'm not sure. But every time I looked up into the mirror this lady was staring one of us down. It was weird. Honestly the entire salon seemed on edge. Nobody seemed to want to acknowledge each other; I felt like I had walked into a room after a big fight. I was relieved when I could get out of there. The cut itself was fine, nothing spectacular but looked good and has grown out well. I would probably give the salon another chance were it not for the ambiance. I found a great groupon deal for cut, color and style and decided to promptly make an appt. I was about 10mins to my appt, and there was no one at the front desk to greet me..5-8mins later the owner asks if I've been helped and I say no. He quickly apologizes and introduces me to my stylist, Martin! We sit down and discuss what I want. He doesn't offer too many suggestions, but hands me a book of color options. Martin was straight to the point and not too talkative. He worked quickly through my hair and I must say he did A GREAT JOB! . He explained step by step what he was applying to my hair and told me how much he would take off. When he was styling and blow drying he did another check and trimmed off a bit more. WORSE SALON EXPERIENCE EVER!!! I booked an Appt. via Groupon weeks ago. I just arrived for my service...They saw I was a black and said oh our treatment won't get your hair straight. It will only take the freeze out. It won't help you. You should get your money back from Groupon. Do not go to this racist place!! They went out of their way to make sure I knew people with my texture of hair was not welcomed there. They said I should have told them about my hair on the phone and should have Goggled the service. My hair gets very straight with a blowout and flat iron. Surely Brazilian and or Keratin treatments work just fine on my hair texture...plus I've had a variety of those services before. But because of the owner and stylists negative attitude pre judging me based on my race, they instantly did what they did then when off to help others leaving me sitting there in shock. I was trying to figure out...oh my gosh..this appt has been scheduled for weeks. This was the one opening in my schedule for a hair appt. now I was humiliated and had to leave without getting my hair done, and my money was tied up in Groupon so no quick solution. BRAZILIAN WITH NORMA WAS HANDS DOWN THE HIGHEST QUALITY I HAVE EVER HAD! I have gotten the Brazilian blowout done a bunch of different times by numerous different people and Norma's process was a game changer for me. She took her time (approx 2.5 hour) applied the product as if she was dying my hair a new color , parting and painting through each and every strand of hair. She also used the official Brazilian Blowout flat iron that was made by the company for stylist doing Brazilian. In addition to being a Certified Brazilian blowout specialist (keep in mind not all hairstylist are certified) She takes annual refresher courses put on by the Brazilian blowout company to keep current with updates and new products the company releases. Anyhow I found out all these great things by talking and getting to know Norma while she did my hair. I actually found a special she was having through a discount company but just called her directly and of course she honored the special which was Coincidently the best price I have ever paid for a blowout. I'm sincerely surprised that this place has 5 stars, but it's probably for the stylists work. Because the customer service of the owners pretty much lack etiquette and sincerity. First of all, I booked an appointment a week in advance. The owner's wife booked it. So I go to my appointment and they don't have me in their schedule. They kept going back and forth with me on this instead of honoring what I'm telling them. They make me wait 45 minutes and while I wait, the owner keeps telling me we usually charge for long or thick hair. Who does that? My hair cut, color, and blow out were nice, but I've had better.
