I'm surprised to see that there aren't more recent reviews of this location! I've been seeing Ivan for five or six years now, and I can't imagine going anywhere else. The haircut is great, but what really keeps me coming back is his way of doing highlights on curly hair. I tend to be pretty low maintenance, even though I'm a curly girl, and he does highlights in a way that they look amazing as they grow out. After about six months, my hair will usually hit that weird, awkward phase and I'll need another haircut, but when I was getting cheaper haircuts, it would look funky after a month or two. Listen up, curly girls. For the past 28 years, I've been struggling with out of control curls. To date, my styling regimen has been to wash my hair, moosh in some product that says "curly" somewhere on the label, and hope it looks okay. If that works, then I try not to touch it or move my head, avoid rain or wind, and offer up a prayer to the hair goddess. If it doesn't work (362/365 days per year), then I lock it up in a curly ponytail/messy bun thing. I haven't cut it in a year, but happened by Salon Ivan and their curly window posters while walking through downtown Colorado Springs. I made an appointment on the spot. Ivan was fantastic. For starters, he really understood curls. He and his wife (who also works in the shop) have curly hair themselves, and he's a Deva Curl specialist, which means he gets to know your curls, cuts them dry so he can see how they bounce around, and then washes and styles your hair from start to finish. I wasn't made to feel bad about my current regimen (the aforementioned prayer ritual + Walgreens sale products), and he really listened to what I wanted and delivered. My hair hasn't been this curly since I was 4 years old. It's big, bouncy, and it's not hanging in my face making me nuts. And he didn't have to cut off 10 inches of hair to give it bounce, which I've done before, and has left me looking like a Q-Tip. Ivan didn't push the products (although he and his wife were both really helpful when I decided to purchase some), and he took the time to show me how to style it so that I can replicate this look at home. And he and his wife even taught me how to not fear my curls. All for the right price. Go there, ladies. (And curly men, I suppose.) You'll be happy with the results! read more

I've struggled with my curly hair my entire life, mostly because I'm mixed race and the parent that used to do my hair doesn't have hair like me. I've been told that curly hair shouldn't have layers in it, shouldn't have bangs, 1 million things that I shouldn't do. Finally I went someplace and Ivan told me what I should do. But once my hair was done, I was certain that I'd found my spot. This salon is run by a father/daughter duo (which is the sweetest thing ever!), and they both are incredibly skilled. Not to mention friendly! Olivia is my stylist, and I will be returning as needed. I love that there's no pressure on you buy products like some salons, that I will not name! This is a cozy little safe haven for curly haired people to get their hair beautified, and it's also very affordable!!! I visited Colorado last month and spontaneously wanted a new look for my hair. I haven't gotten my hair colored, cut, or styled by anyone in the past 2 years and I decided to look for potential places in Colorado Springs. I ended up making an appointment with Olivia at Salon Ivan. It was the BEST decision I have ever made. I wanted an entire new look. Olivia first offers me the colors that are best suited for me without damaging my hair after offering me tea and coffee. She then explains the process of how she will dye my hair so I know exactly how it will look. After she dyes my hair and rinses the color out, she skillfully cuts my hair in the layers that I wanted. She held a professional conversation with me while explaining how my hair will look. After she shampooed and conditioned my new hairstyle, she delivered some shocking news. My entire life, I thought I had straight hair. Turns out, I'm a 2b or a 2c on the curly hair chart. I have "swavy" hair!! This was definitely exciting news, especially since I have always wanted curly hair. Turns out, I have not been styling it correctly. I have just been brushing my hair out after my shower (that along with earth's gravitational pull can really straighten my hair, which made sense to me), but I just never thought that could make a drastic change to the way my hair can look. It really takes a professional to see this, which says a lot about Olivia's passion and knowledge of hair! I LOVE this salon, as well as Ivan. I don't have curly hair, but I still will not go anywhere else. A few months ago, I went somewhere else with my mom, and was reminded why I only go to Ivan. I'm trying to go blonder, which is a process with dark hair, and Ivan knows how to work with my fine/thin hair, without damaging it. For a young woman (I'm 28) I have a lot of fine hair, and its pretty thin to say the least, so its easy to damage it. I've been going to Ivan for years, and I've never been let down by him. I would recommend him to absolutely anyone, doesn't matter what hair type.
