After a winter of growing my hair I realized I needed to get it cut before my trip to the tropics. I'm particular, but I know exactly what I want and need because I've lived with my diminishing hair for 55 years now. When following my instructions barbers usually do a good job. She did exactly as I asked. And in 15 minutes I walked out with a perfect haircut. Better than I expected. Better than my $35 dollar guy. The cherry on top? It was $17 dollars! STFU?! I wish I could give this place better rating! She's so nice and it's so close to home for me! I really would like to keep coming back here! But 2 visits in a row now she messed up my hair! First time, I gave her benefit of the doubt but it happened again and I am not happy! Both times I went in asking for a simple trim, nothing fancy, no layers, no tricky stuff, just a straight trim! Last time, after she cut my hair, she told me she added "texture." I wish she had told me before she did that cuz what am I supposed to do? Ask her to glue it back? My hair does not do well with layers! That's why I'm trying to get rid of all of it! Today, I went back for a second chance and she ended up trimming a portion of my unwanted bangs that I been trying to grow out for almost a year! Now I have to start over! I'm so mad! Had my chair been turned towards the mirror, I could have seen what she was doing and told her not to do that! I wish she would communicate before she makes decisions about what she's doing with your hair! Once it's cut, there's nothing you can do except just to wait to grow it out and now I gotta start all over trying to grow everything out to same length including my messed up bangs that I was sooooo close to growing out halfway that took almost a year to do! read more

Stopped by this place randomly today as my son needed a haircut. Met Susan who was super friendly and welcoming! We showed her a picture of what my son wanted, as she waited patiently while he tried to find one, and she did a great job matching it. She also cut his hair gently, he'd complained of other stylists clippers from other salons pulling his hair and being rough that he'd wince at times but not with her! His cut turned out adorable and on point, son very happy and we'll be back. Definitely give them a try. read more

If you are like me, the one thing you value the most in getting a haircut is eliminating the possibility of receiving a bad one. I've been getting my hair cut here for years now, and Susan has consistently given me a good haircut every time I come in. Not only that, but she remembered what kind of cut I wanted and how short to cut it after only a few visits. I just have to sit down in her chair and she gets to work. Started coming here because the person I used to go to was talkative and a bit judgey because my canto isn't the greatest; and always took over 20 minutes to cut my hair. Susan is a lovely and super friendly woman. Been here a couple times for a quick and cheap cut. In and out in UNDER 20 minutes. She also offered me to come back in case I get unhappy with how my hair turns out after showering! I'm pretty low maintenance, so I hardly get haircuts. The owner is SO gentle and patient I can't imagine taking my 4 yo elsewhere. A children's haircut is $12 (plus tip) so it's half the price of most children-only places for a perfect (not just okay) cut. You can take your children here the day before pictures without fear. (I can't say the same anywhere else I've taken my child until I discovered Salon J.) She always has a steady stream of clients - mostly adults, both men and women - and everyone leaves pleased. The Bermuda Triangle. What happened to Jimmy Hoffa. My hair -- the greatest mysteries of our times. For most guys, going to a hair stylist/salon is as routine as getting your oil changed. For me and my coarse, unruly Asian hair, much rides on how well I translate the style I want and who styles it. Even going into Supercuts is pressure. When my hair started to sprout wings on my sides and back, it was obviously time to get my usual number 4 and half inch trim. I was on my way to the Irving St. Supercuts -- which has been hit or miss for me since I've lived in the Sunset -- but I saw a shop across the street offering men's haircuts for $10 called Salon J. I reasoned, "Can Salon J do any worse a job than Supercuts for half price?" I was first in the queue, so I took some time to look around. There are only two stations and probably just as many shampoo stations in the back. Despite that, it's clean, modern and intimately lit, actually a little more sophisticated looking than your typical Supercuts and Great Clips. Bonus points for a wide variety of magazines to read while waiting. Hey, it's refreshing to read a Sports Illustrated from March, rather than a People magazine announcing Suri Cruise's birth. My stylist, the famous Susan, asked me what I wanted -- not any different than any other stylist I've had in the past 20 years. "Number 4, half inch trim on the top," I muttered. She massaged my head briefly and examined my hair like a consumer combing over a new car. She suggested layering my hair to give it texture and a modern, messy look. "Only old men going to golden anniversary parties should wear their hair straight," she observed. I seriously LOL'ed -- I've never genuinely laughed at a stylist's joke. The haircut took about 40 minutes, which in the cases of haircuts, I don't mind; it was a meticulous job. The experience was more enjoyable thanks to her witty, biting observations about the Supercuts across the street. Unsurprisingly, Susan finds herself correcting many of the f-ups that happen after a Supercuts hairstyle. She noted that those stylists are rookies from salon school, after all. Not forgetting that Salon J is first and foremost a business, Susan told me that if I don't like my haircut after the first wash, I can come in any time during the week to get it fixed. "It's the economy," she said. "People don't want to spend too much on haircuts, especially if the haircut is bad." I'm normally annoyned by "it's the economy" statements, but if the consumer (read: me) benefits, I'm OK with it. My only "complaint" is that Salon J is cash only, which can be inconvenient for someone like me who usually doesn't carry cash. It's a minor blip for someone who's been searching for the perfect salon for in San Francisco. I think I've finally found it! read more

I just don't understand how a simple request to trim bangs, trim some ends at the bottom with a little layering on the sides could come out looking like a Fraggle Rock-Dutch Boy hair cut! My eyes were shut while the stylist was cutting and when I opened them... SURPRISE!!! Although I had thought the instructions were clear and there was an understanding, apparently they weren't for whatever reasons. But it was too late, the damage was done and I just couldn't get out of the place fast enough. This is not a becoming hair style on a grown woman and I just can't seem to do anything with it to make this work! So head will be hanging a little low for awhile having to face the public with this ridiculous cut until hair grows out:-( Lessons learned: keep eyes open at all times and think twice about choosing convenience and pricing over quality of service. I started going here because it was close to where I lived and the lady here was pretty friendly. I've been going back ever since (even though there may be cheaper hair cutters within a file block radius) just because the lady (i forgot her name...) is fast and efficient, but also does a quality job. I'm not very good at giving directions to cut my hair - i just sort of say - "TRIM" - but she was good at suggesting what I wanted and I was pleased by the way it came out. I think she's used to cutting asian guy hair - and she recognized what kind of style would look best on me. I didn't like how she thinned my hair, but i've since asked her to stop. I usually can get in and out (thats what she said) in about 10-15 minutes and I think cuts are only $10 for guys (might go up to $15 because to $10 cut might have been a special). read more

HORRIBLE! My hair was butchered!!! Ladies, stay away from this place!!!! I gave very clear instructions before and during the haircut about what I wanted; which was a trim of my existing long layers that frame my face and a TRIM of my long bangs that I wear to the side and like to tuck behind my ear. What I got was layers ALL over my head (which I specifically told her I did NOT want, at least 4 times) and worst of all, SHORT bangs that I have *no choice* but to wear straight across my forehead-- a style I've tried before and TOLD her looked bad on me and that I did NOT want before she even started cutting!!!!!!! The moment she started cutting my bangs she took one huge, long section and chopped it about half an inch above my eyebrows. I saw a section of about 2 1/2 inches fall into my lap and I knew this was a disaster. I had her stop right then, but the damage had been done. She cut so far to the side that it's not even possible to blend it to even resemble bangs swept to the side. I don't know if it was a language barrier, or if the lady just had an idea of the haircut she wanted to give me, but I could not be more furious. I was so irate I immediately stormed out since it was clear she had no idea what I wanted or how to fix the damage she had already done. Seriously, I have trimmed my bangs better myself and am confident I could've gotten a better haircut at Supercuts. Now I'm stuck with a stupid looking haircut that I'm going to have to spend another 6 months growing out. Be warned! An inexpensive haircut is not worth having your hair butchered! read more

Do not come here for an eyebrow wax. Way overpriced and terrible job. There was still a lot of hair that wasn't waxed or plucked off, & my brow hairs started growing back the next day. So pointless. Since coming here a few weeks ago, my brows are still suffering the repercussions of this wax job. They were trimmed oddly and way too much, so now my hairs are growing in different directions. I STILL have grow out my entire brow in order to fix whatever disaster went on at this salon. Feel a little bad for writing a poor review because the owner is very nice, but doesn't excuse the awful work. read more

I started going here as a regular cause its convenient, decent, and cheap. This part of Sunset has a little of everything if you have to wait. While there's no wash, the price and quality more than makes up for it. She does do scissor over comb and especially good with Asian hair. Even better, they're having a special this month. $12 hair cuts. Good deal in these hard times. read more

Quick and cheap. Susan does a dry cut in under 20mins (pretty great for a straightforward women's haircut if you don't want the hair wash-head massage song & dance.) She is lovely and super flexible-- if you're not quite satisfied, you can usually come back the next day for an adjustment! read more

For a simple guys haircut this place is the best quality/price ratio out there. I don't like clippers except on the edges so she uses scissors for me no problem and still is done fast, and has me looking good. I've been going to her a few years now without any screw ups which is a better track record than I have had anywhere else under $30 and a few places over. One thing I always hated about going anywhere else to get a haircut is the cutter seems to feel like its "supposed" to take x amount of time, so when they are done in 15 mins they spend another 20 mins or more dicking around snipping individual hairs and/or cutting it shorter then I asked for. At salon J, she bangs it out in 15-20 mins for mine without ever being shoddy. This is also good if you have to wait because it will be a short wait. Only downside is no luxurious, scalp massaging shampoo, but you get what you pay for read more

Update: After I washed and dried my hair, I can now see that the cut job isn't terrible by any means. I'm adding stars since the end result turned out A-OK. I saw the sign for $25 women's haircuts and thought it seemed like a good deal. My hair is long and too much damage can't be done, right? I walk into the empty salon and the owner immediately seats me. I thought we were going to discuss what I want and then go to the sink for a washing. Uh-huh. She doesn't ask me what I want, she just starts spraying my hair with water. I said 'Ummm, I haven't washed my hair today. You can wash it even if it costs extra.' She asks 'Did you wash it yesterday? Oh it's fine. Still clean'. She cut an inch off here and there and promptly wraps up when other customers start filing in. To top it off she smooths some pomade into my already greasy head of hair and doesn't even bother with the blow dryer. I walk out into the street with wet, greasy hair and promptly run home. So far as I can tell, my hair isn't a disaster. There's just no way of knowing until I wash and dry my hair. Next time, I'll make an appointment with a reputable salon. Just goes to show you, I should have read yelp reviews first! read more
