DO NOT GO TO THIS SALON! Jimmy destroyed my hair. In October of 2024, I came into Salon 828 with mid-length, healthy brown hair and having read reviews online I thought I could trust Jimmy to dye my hair blonde while keeping it long, but boy was I wrong. Not only was I charged $500 for a yellow dye job that fell out in clumps resulting in an unwanted pixie cut, when I went to another salon months later to try and salvage what was left of my hair I was told the dye he used was so strong that when this other salon had accidentally ordered it (instead of putting it onto paying customers hair, like Jimmy) they poured it on the concrete outside their building, that's right- he put a dye strong enough to bleach concrete onto my hair. My formerly long, healthy hair was bright yellow when I wanted it a white bleached color, and the consistency of straw. Even the blunt pixie cut I was forced into couldn't hide how many different lengths it had split off into. Somehow, I was convinced to revisit Jimmy for a touch up on my roots, I assumed this would be free because he had destroyed my hair- nope- I was charged around $300, for a root touch up, mind you he couldn't even successfully dye my roots to match the yellow of my hair, he let me leave the salon with orange roots. I've spent the last 10 months attempting to regrow my hair, I've poured hundreds of dollars into olaplaex, k18, and not touching it with bleach, yet it has barely grown 2 inches and is still completely broken and all different lengths. Not only did Jimmy at Salon 828 destroy my hair, he destroyed my bank account (charging ridiculous prices) and my confidence and trust in stylists. Don't end up like me, don't go here. Rhoda the quiet unassuming lady gave me a great haircut for a short hair. The price was equally great. She is very skilled and most of all listened and sensed clearly what I wanted and delivered it very well with her expertise. Salon 828 also cuts men's hair also by her husband Ben who was very friendly. The salon is at a busy section of Irving street but at the time I went 5 p.m. there was a sprawl of parking. I chose this place based on yelp reviews. If you just need a basic cut or trim, this place is great. But otherwise, avoid. I had a pretty specific idea of what I wanted but was open to what the stylist would think. Without discussing any specifics or looking at the photos I asked if I could show, he just started cutting within two minutes of me sitting in the chair. We had barely discussed how much I wanted to trim off and I had definitely not given a solid ok! I had to ask him to explain what he was doing before he did it. Had no idea what I was going to end up with. I wanted long layers and to keep it pretty long. I got way too many blunt layers and it barely reaches the shoulder blades. Absolutely the opposite of what I had in mind when I walked in. It's technically a fine haircut but not what I asked for, or would have asked for if I had the chance to even ask. He did apologize for jumping right in. He is very nice and personable and has a gentle hand, but I will never go back. $50 for womens' long hair cut. read more

I walked in on a Saturday and the owners are super sweet. I have long hair and was able to get a great haircut for $30. They do a fantastic job with children hairstyles as well! I was recommended by a friend who's gotten her hair cut and permed wavy for $90 + tip here a handful of times. She is super picky about what's done to her hair so I knew I would be able to trust them if she did. I called and was able to make an appointment the same day for a spiral perm. The two owners, a husband and wife, are super nice and teamwork together to give a great hair experience. The guy owner was really knows his stuff and explained to me what he was doing to ensure my hair wouldn't frizz up (like what happens to most people if a perm isn't done properly). It's been 4 days since I got my hair done and my hair feels and looks healthy and shiny which is not what it felt like when I got a perm 4+ years ago. Paid $110+tip (probably because I have a ridiculous amount of hair) which is expected for a cut and perm. I spent 2.5 hours there and the owners didn't rush it even though they were trying to close early to prepare for their vacation the next day. read more

I'm surprised this place doesn't have more reviews! I had the best experience here with Ben and his wife. They really care about their customer and have been in the business for 35 years. Not only was Ben extremely kind and friendly, but you can tell he is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he does. I came in with really long hair that hasn't been properly cut in over a year. He was giving me advice on when/how to brush, how to maintain hair health, etc. The best part is he kept checking in with me every step of the way - do I like the length? Do I want more layers? Do I want to continue thinning out my hair? This way I felt included and there were no surprises. I don't get my haircut too often, but now I want to start trimming regularly just so I can give my business to this lovely couple! Well worth it and very reasonably priced! read more

Salon 828 has moved to 2004 Irving street since April 2019. Ben and his wife Rhoda been in the salon business since the80's but both are still young at heart. They are very friendly and nice to their customers. Once you try the haircut and facial you will be very happy when you walk out the shop. This guy is the original owner of 828 Salon that was on 24th and Irving, for all you Sunset heads that remember. They moved a couple of times and the owner ended up moving to Hong Kong but alas! They're back! It's now a smaller salon and I think it's just his wife and him running the place. They do waxing and hair coloring too. The barber has a lot of experience, it's been well over a decade that he's been cutting hair. I'm so glad he's back, pricing is pretty decent there and the barber managers to communicate with you. It's also located right in the busy parts of Irving but there are metered parking spots right outside and non-metered spots on the side streets. I will definitely be coming back now that he is back, even though it is a bit out of the way from where I live. You know... You always have that one barber that you love to go to? I want to start by saying how I rarely ever go out to get my hair cut. Rare as in maybe 2-3x in my life! I've always had my hair cut at home by my mom or uncle growing up, or friends or fiancé. As a guy, especially as an Asian guy, it's pretty easy and I can save the money. Anyhow, this was for my wedding this weekend, so I figured I'd take a gamble and go for it. Called day-of to ask if there were any available time slots for me to walk in. They said I could come in 20mins. Since I live a couple blocks away, this was no problem! The business is owned and ran by husband and wife. Both are very sweet, and I'd be happy with either cutting my hair, and I had the wife. She was efficient, attentive to detail, and all-around great! Even after she finished and was brushing me off, she noticed areas she wanted to fix and got right to it. Now that, I appreciate! Price my my cut was $14. My only regret is I didn't feel like I tipped enough, because I didn't have any more cash on me! Highly recommend this duo, and would be willing to come back again for sure. read more

I haven't gotten anything besides a simple hair trim so I can't review other services. Always a good experience here. The husband is a great conversationalist too. Was recommended to this hidden gem to do my nails for a friend's wedding since I'm not familiar with sf. I meet Tina who was quick to greet me. I told her I wanted a manicure and pedicure and she asked if I had anything in mind. I'm a bit clueless when it comes to these things so I just told her I wanted something neutral with a simple design. Tina showed me several neutral colors and suggested potential colors that would match my dress color. She then proceed to suggested designs she can do and they all sounded wonderful. I opted to do French. I may not get my nails done as often as I like. But I was very happy with how my nails turned out. Tina was fast yet very gentle during the process. My nails came out looking perfect, probably the best I've ever gotten them done. I've received so many compliments from people. My polish usually chip off after several days, but for some reason, these still look pretty good. Perfectly looking nails that lasts long? It's every girl's dream come true! Thank you, Tina! I'm jealous of local SFers. They have Tina in town to do their nails. As for me, I still need to look for a Tina version in so cal. I don't hand out 5 stars so easily, but Tina definitely deserves it. Overall, I highly recommend coming to this salon to get your nails done whether you're a local or just hanging out on vacation. Chinese barbers often like to make conversation with you while they cut your hair, and Ben here sure was conversational. I could tell from our interaction that he's a great guy though, and he is quite dedicated to his job because he takes a true interest in providing this service and meeting all sorts of customers. I've met few barbers who are like that, and what's more he shares a lot of his own experiences and advice as well. It then goes without saying that my regular haircut (nothing complex) turned out looking great for a small $12. This is definitely a place to come back to. read more

I've been going to Ben and Rhoda since I was 16 and I'm now 40!!! They've been cutting my hair cut 24 years and it has always been outstanding. Rhoda has always cut my hair and all I do is sit down when o get there and don't have to explain anything she know exactly how to cut my hair every time and I don't have to say anything. That's actually priceless! You'll know what I mean when you're trying to find a new barber and they butcher you leaving you looking like a marine, or ten year old boy. Dan & Rhoda are couple who have operated hair salons for many years. They've recently returned from Hong Kong to open up a shop in the Sunset district, SF. After spending years switching from one salon to another, I returned to try them again. Thankfully, Dan is as good as I remembered. Dan and Rhoda are both stylists, Dan being more experienced with women's hair and Rhoda taking care of men and also providing other services such as facials, waxing, hair color and treatment.
